So what is the assumed format for this next year?
First a smaller direct giving info on switch games more remakes and remasters.
Then an introduction video, and press release with a press conference date, for the switch 2.
Some think we could get a Mini direct. I think most believe we’ll still get a February general direct. Then switch 2 will get an announcement after that with some kind of presentation

This seems both very exciting and well within the realm of possibility.

What does non-enthusiastic game mean though? Something “casual” like 1-2 Switch?

Also I seem to have missed any Super Monkey Ball rumors.
1) Yes, I meant something like 1 2 Switch. I can be a new IP or the revival of an old IP,
2) Super Monkey Ball rumors are from not very trustworthy sources really but you can just replace that with any Sega published title like one of their recently announced titles at TGA.
3) BTW, I would add 2 more titles, a new Warriors game by Koei-Tecmo (by their timeline, it can be Warriors Orochi 5 or also a Wu Long port) and an Activision-Blizzard family-friendly game like a new Tony Hawk or Spyro (if there is any in development for fall 2024).

So, I think that around 30 games in their launch month considering all big and mid size publishers.

I think it's almost a lock that there's a Call of Duty at launch, be it Modern Warfare 3 (2023), Black Ops 6 or even just a Warzone 2 port to tide over until BO6

I wonder if Nintendo would make a new Star Fox game, that's both story driven, but also have online multiplayer that has both arwing/wolfen dogfights but can be a 3rd person shooter. Like I remember from the older Halo multiplayer, where you can enter vehicles in and out the map, but also just be a shooter.

Although Star Fox is a on-rail shooter, I do think the series can evolve to something like that, if done correctly.
I'd like to see something like that for Switch 2 honestly.

I think Nintendo misjudged the franchise. They've run out of ideas internally and handled off to Namco and Platinum to do. Thinking the right solution is an arcade shooter experience.

To me, it's pretty clear Star Fox was always about it being a cinematic space shooter. I mean the SNES game ran at sub 20 fps, in an era when most SNES games were 60 fps and we all still loved it because it was f'ing polygons and look a those cool camera angles. I still love the original to this day and play through from time to time on NSO , my SNES or the SNES classic Mini, but people who didn't grow up with Star Fox on SNES have all told me it wasn't that fun to them, probably because of the frame rate, and not being there and having our imaginaitons fill in the missing parts of those cinematic cut scenes.

The cinematic part is very popular these days, and I think a tight 5 hour cinematic Star Fox game maybe 15 levels and the same 3 route split of the original but leaning heavily on story, atmosphere and talking muppets showing off the console's power by rendering it all raytraced DLSS'd 3D goodness would do well.

It would still have to be a mid-budget game, which is where the relatively short playtime is about, but a game that's like that I think can work.

re: Star Fox multiplayer, i remember Star Fox Assault's multiplayer being a blast back in the day. At one point it overtook Halo as our friend group's go-to multiplayer shooter.

I’m still on “they should call Ace Combat devs to make a Star Fox skin AC in space” train.
I don't think Ace Combat is a good fit because realistic jet combat is at odds with the Star Fox aesthetic (and "realistic jet combat" makes zero sense in space, lol)

Star Fox needs to grow beyond being an on rails shooter if it's gonna make a name for itself. Otherwise it has no real chance of becoming anything. The genre in and of itself is very limited in terms of what can be done.

are you a shareholder or something?

Obviously no one cares about zippo. But I was following him this past day. He mentioned some Sega game missing in 17 years is coming back. Then he posted Xenoblade Chronicles X remake was coming. He was going to keep making more posts of info he had during Christmas.

But then his whole blog disappeared. It was removed it said. Kind of interesting.

Intriguing given that attention seeking...anyways. It's intriguing given he would never willingly remove his blog. He's posted so much crap for so long and it's remained up, this is either a new low for him in terms of dumb stunts for attention or there's actually a chance for once that Zippo stumbled upon real info from a source for a change and his entire blog was quickly Ninja'd as a result.

I mean, not like the "leaks" are all that worthy of Nintendo going ham like that. Given where Xenoblade is at, a remake of X coming next is an obvious guess and it was only natural that inevitably it would be coming as there is speculation out there that the next Xenoblade is a sequel to X.

Then there is the Sega one. That is also an obvious guess given what Sega is now doing under their new initiative. It's a no brainer that any Sega franchise that hasn't been utilised for many, many years can be revived and receive a new entry.

They are very safe guesses, which is Zippo's modus operandi when it comes to his "leaks." He makes extremely safe guesses and if they do land, it validates him despite him pretty much being wrong all the time.

I guess we'll see, if his blog has been taken down unwillingly, well, next Direct I would assume we get these announcements if Nintendo is being this overzealous about it.

well, that’s a good thing about 2023. Many fake leakers gone.

Nintendo 100% should hire Ubisoft and get the Starlink: Battle for Atlus team to make an actual Star Fox game. Starlink could have been so much better if it was 100% designed as a Star Fox game and was much more focused because of it.

Imagine a Star Fox game that took place in a solar system with seamless planet and space travel. The dream.

Actually, now that I think about it, not getting that team onto a dedicated Star Fox game the moment Starlink released would've been a failure on Nintendo and Ubisofts part. It just makes sense.

Yes and no. I am all for Ubisoft making a Star Fox game if they bring together the best parts of Starlink, but if I have to spend a nano second gathering any resources, I will flip tables. Star Fox is a shooter game. Not a "gather x amount of resources to build base" game.

Nintendo's focus on reviving it with more of the same isn't working. At it's core it is not an arcade game. So in a sense we do agree. Besides, I didn't say rail shooter, but just that it needs to stick to its shooter roots to keep it simple.

An open world Star Fox may work, but it all has to work with a middle buget release as they would need to spend a considerable amount of money on the cinematics and acting as a i feel it should be more about the story and characters, which is what made Star Fox stand out to begin with.

Maybe have elements of Star Fox 2 where you have to fly from planet to planet to fullfill missions, rather than a rigid route system.

I think Star Fox resigning itself to being incapable of growing past a genre as limited as an arcade shooter is rather defeatist.

There are deeper, more currently popular genres that to me, the IP seems like it could easily slot itself into. There's vehicles; on land, in air, and under water. There's on foot shooting - whether team-based or solo. There is a planetary system in which you can traverse to different locations - with a variety of weapons, futuristic technologies, popular characters, multiple factions and not insubstantial world-building, for a Nintendo IP.

There's so much potential for it to be something beyond a short, linear shooter. There's an RPG shooter, a vehicle/on-foot shooter (multiplayer or single-player, team-based or ffa), there's exploration-based flying/on foot action/adventure game, there's a tactical/shooter vehicle/on foot hybrid. There's so many elements you could weave in: character recruitment, vehicle customization, tower defence, looter shooter, unique character abilities, side quests on various planets/stations, squad management (like if you had to send two groups to two different locations), character interaction between missions resulting in improved stats when fighting together, etc. Like, some of the ideas they tried in previous games weren't inherently bad, they were just unrefined.

Yeah it'd be a bigger budget, and therefore a bigger risk, but you're not putting out the kind of game that lost all but niche commercial appeal years ago. You're tempering the gamble by making something that the masses might at least want to play. Because if you put out something fairly derivative of most of what Star Fox has been so far, even a good-looking game will still be aged by its dated, somewhat shallow genre - and it won't achieve much new commercially.

And no matter how impressive they can make it look on the new hardware, there are still going to be better-looking games out there that actually do more than just keep you mostly on rails.

Plus, forgoing trying something new with the hook of a game just being to look as good as it can might be the MO of other companies, but it's not Nintendo's.

wow, the speculation mill is sure getting slow this time of the year. anyone would like to make a bet? just me? ok, here we go:

i bet 2 coffee-flavoured candy that, in its first 3 three years of its life, the SW2 would have outsold the future hardware sales of the PS5.

Ace Combat has about as much to do with real jets as Mario has to do with real plumbers. It's a fantastical arcade game through and through, with a worldview that has more in common with the likes of Armored Core and mecha anime, just utilizing jets instead. Flight Simulator it is definitely NOT haha

But it is funny to think that Ace Combat and Armored Core have BOTH have had recent revivals that had performed well, gotten their fair share of acclaim AND largely stayed true to themselves, in the time since Fox has been grounded.

the more I watch the synchro animations in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the more I believe we're gonna get a spinoff in the coming years that leverage these. whether it's Pokemon Legends 2, Mystery Dungeon that's not a top down game, PokePark 3, or something else. might be cross-gen, might not be

Yeah, liked starlink but was too much “Ubisoft-open world”, something smaller and more focused could work great instead.

my point still stands. a Star Fox that plays like Ace Combat doesn't suit it all the IP, I think. even further from the Furry Mass Effect ideas

Do people want the IP to continue after Miyamoto or not? Nintendo has to know what they want from the series. It can be a smaller series or a bigger series where they need to do things to attract a larger audience.

I don't know about you guys but I wouldn't be sad if Nintendo stopped making mobile games, I rather they put 100% of their gaming efforts onto the Switch 2 (Yes, I know mobile games didn't really affect much) but still.
Oh no. But the shareholders want mobile games, so what about the shareholders? We have to think about the shareholders. How to live without pitiful gatcha? It’s impossible! They are so smart! And above all, what would the completely incompetent financial analysts say?

I’m imagining a mainline Pokémon game with playable Pokémon sequences.

Like HMs, but you actually control the Pokémon, like you see an item on top of a waterfall and you send out Gyarados to climb the waterfall and get it. Or like a full flashback sequences where you play as Cubone getting away from Team Rocket in Lavender Town or you play as Rayquaza deflecting meteors in space until you find Deoxys

And it wouldn’t even be the first time they’ve done stuff like this, there were brief brief moments in Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee where you could control Pikachu/Eevee to crawl into a vent and flip the switch for a lock

Yes. I don't think any IP should be forced into retirement along with the creator. With the exception of Kojima and Metal Gear Solid, I don't think that there is any franchise that is intertwined with its creator to where it is almost impossible to continue without said person.

Without Miyamoto championing it, it being a smaller series may cause it to struggle even more to still get releases.

I think it would at least need a dev without a lineup of more profitable titles to otherwise keep it busy. Like, its own HAL or MercurySteam or something. Not that Kirby and Metroid are small, just that if it becomes big, that dev would either stay on it, or Nintendo may try to find someone else to helm it. If not, without a dev in place, they may not care enough to proactively bother.

Do you expect that the next Star Fox will be developed by epd4? (Nintendo Switch sports, labo series, 1-2 switch and etc.)

Wait im confused there are three threads speculating on future stuff now damn
One is dedicated to speculate future HW tech intensive stuff.

Other one is dedicated to speculate about future Switch 2 SW, planning, marketing plans, etc.

This one is focused on guessing what are general Nintendo marketing plans for 2024, including both Switch 1 and 2.

Star Fox is a brand that Nintendo can do a ton with if they want

They could make a budget arcade space shooter like the classics.

They could do a modern take on SF2 where you move your ships around to take on different battles/liberate planets

They can full embrace going for a cover based third person shooter + battlefield like Assault with modern controls

They can go full Star Fox Effect doing more of an rpg style space opera in the SF universe

SF as a brand has a ton of potential, I think the bigger problem is finding a creative with the right passion for the IP to make use of it.

Been thinking about how Smash Ultimate is 5 years old and it not only makes me feel incredibly old, but makes me miss the speculation and hype of a new Smash game.

Yeah, DLC is cool and all and I loved the three years of DLC, but DLC just isn't as engaging as speculating on what new gimmick, modes, single-player content and anything else a Smash game could have outside of just new/returning characters.

In this calm period before the holidays and new year, I thought I'd post my thoughts/predictions on the how and when Nintendo's next gen heavy hitters might launch over its lifespan. This was less of a wishlist and more of a puzzle game. Given what Nintendo's big teams have last worked on and when they released, what would the tentpole titles be each year? How will they space them out?

Regardless, I don't think we'll see a repeat of the Switch's first 2 years (nearly every major franchise within the first calendar year, followed by a lighter year 2 capped off by Smash and Mario Party). I simply don't think the teams have the marquee titles ready to go year 1 or even 2 for that matter. What this means is that we'll get a more "normal" software cadence with 1-2, maybe 3, tentpole titles per year instead of the front-loaded Switch first year.

All titles are exclusive unless stated otherwise or releasing before Switch 2.

2024: Launch year
  • Donkey Kong - Summer (leading up to launch)
  • Mario Baseball - Summer (leading up to launch)
  • 3D Mario - launch day
  • New Casual IP - launch day
  • Metroid Prime 4 - launch window (before 2025)
  • cross gen Pokemon Legends 2 - November
  • cross gen Fire Emblem 4 Echoes - December
2025: The First "Full" Year

  • New non-Casual IP (a la ARMS, Splatoon, etc.) - Spring, before the FY end
  • 3D Kirby - Spring
  • Mario Party - late Spring
  • Zelda Remake - Summer
  • new Monolithsoft IP - Summer
  • Astral Chain 2 - late Summer
  • 2D Metroid - Fall
  • Luigi's Mansion 4 - Fall
  • Ring Fit Adventure 2 - Fall
  • Mario Kart 10 - holiday
  • cross gen Pokemon remake - November (interchangeable with PL2)
2026: Most of the Rest + Switch 2 lite

  • A Mario RPG - Winter (could be Dec '25 as well)
  • Switch 2 Sports - Spring
  • Fire Emblem - Spring
  • Splatoon 4 - Summer
  • Animal Crossing - September, alongside NS2 lite
  • Warioware - Fall
  • Bayonetta 4 - Fall
  • Pokemon Gen 10 - November
  • Super Smash Bros. 7 - December

2027: Whatever's Left

  • Pikmin 5 - Spring
  • Princess Peach - Spring
  • Paper Mario - Summer
  • Return of an IP (StarFox, Kid Icarus?) - Summer
  • Metroid Prime 5 - Early Fall
  • 2D Mario - October
  • Pokemon G10 DLC - holiday
  • Zelda - December or possibly delayed to H1 '25 (conflicted on this one)
2028: I don't really have an interesting title. But it will be the next iterations in franchises that had late Switch releases

  • Donkey Kong
  • F Zero
  • New IP
  • Sequels
  • Pokemon Legends 3 or remake - November

"Other" - for titles I wasn't sure where and when to fit in

  • Yoshi - I think some kind of Yoshi title is likely in 2024/2025, given it'll have been 5+ years since CW in 2019. Not sure on the developer or the style of gameplay (3D?).
  • Xenoblade X Remakester - I could see this coming in 2024 in late Summer before the new MS IP in 2025, but I'm not sure if it would be on Switch as well or next gen only. It has been 2 years since XB3 and MS tends to put something out at least every other year.
  • Camelot sports: with a prediction of baseball in 2024, not sure what the path forward will be for tennis and golf. Back to tennis for ‘26/27? Golden Sun in between?
I admit that MP5 and Zelda in late 2027 is pushing it, but we've been told TOTK was done almost a whole year before it released (had a year of polish) and that MP4 has supposedly been done (held for the same reasons + cross gen). 5 years on from late 2022 (TOTK was likely content complete) and 4 years on from late 2023 I think is enough time for the follow up titles for these series, barring another pandemic or global crisis. But honestly, either of the two titles could very easily slip into March of the next year before the FY ends.

In the end, I think Nintendo's aim will be to get out nearly every "major" franchise out by the 3rd year of the Switch to continue to build its momentum and to avoid a year 2 like Switch's 2018. Some titles will likely be delayed to 2028, but they will shoot for the 4th year worst case, as that is typically the peak year of most consoles.

Edit: added cross gen for Pokemon 2024 and 2025, also Camelot

I wonder how Nintendo will handle media and media apps on the next system. It's not something that's entirely necessary, as it's been discussed to death since the console existed. But it is odd how some are there, while most aren't.

I was honestly half expecting them to throw the Mario movie on the eshop for purchase once that was out of theaters, kind of like how they handled the Pikmin shorts on Wii U. I think the only way to watch the movie on the system is through a YouTube purchase/rental?

That aside, a new and improved eshop is one of the main things I'm hoping for in regards to the next system. It's honestly shocking that we're still stuck with the one we have that runs like a website from 2002.

Many of us have been clamoring for new and improved Nintendo hardware for years. First, we had rumors of Nintendo planning a "Pro" model Switch system back in 2018. Rumors began to heat up in 2020 that Nintendo had something coming. 2021 arrived and we were surprised with the OLED model announcement. After that, we were told that there is another system still coming. Devkits were reportedly being sent out to 3rd parties. There was hope that Nintendo would pair a release of the Nintendo Switch Pro model with the launch of the sequel to Beath of the Wild. Well in early 2023, the news came down that Nintendo had cancelled a Pro model. Despite all of our despair, the truth that we soon realized was that the next generation of Nintendo gaming was getting closer. We don't know when Nintendo will reveal the system. It could be weeks from now. It could be months from now. Welcome to the official Star Topic to discuss all things Nintendo Switch 2!

  • Off-Topic discussion
    • Look, we all know that it is inevitable that there will be the occasional post that strays off the beaten path. If someone posts the gif of Kylo Ren saying ""More!", that could lead to a three-page discussion why The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars film. So, while we don't want to make this a no fun place, we do want to make sure that we stay on track as much as possible. If someone makes a joke or a reference to something that isn't Nintendo related, go ahead and laugh, but don't keep pushing the conversation. We also don't want to ask the mods to babysit us and threadban people. This is where we (the community) will need to work with each other while finding that right balance.
  • In-depth tech analysis
    • While general discussions about how powerful we are expecting the Switch 2 to be is fine, this thread isn't the ideal place for high detailed technical talk. Our goal is to make this a broad Nintendo discussion thread that convers as much ground as possible. We already have a hardware speculation thread for that conversation. It is full of very kind and knowledgeable people who know what they are talking about and can explain it in layman terms as needed.
  • Posting fake leakers tweets
    • For those of us that have been around the internet for a while, we know that fake leakers love to say anything for a click. As we get closer to the actual release, more and more fake leakers will come out of the woodwork. We are better off not giving those leakers the attention they crave. While we won't ask for a ban the first time someone posts fake leaker, frequent infractions may result action by the mods.

Probably the biggest question regarding the next Switch, besides whether or not it will be backwards compatible with current Switch games, is when will Nintendo announce the system already? While history does not always repeat itself, it can be good to look back and see how things played out last time.

While this thread is a place for general discussion on most Nintendo topics, we have plenty of ST's in case you want to have longer or more in-depth conversations on these topics.

Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST|- For more in depth and technical discussions on the Switch 2 hardware.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack |ST|- For ongoing discussions about the NSO service.
Nintendo First Party Software Development |ST|- An incredible OP filled with information regarding both Nintendo's internal studios as well as their subsidiaries and partners.

We certainly need Snipperclips 2/U launch title or Furukawa is not getting my damn money

I think the casual Switch 2 thread has run its course

It's original charter was to quarantine the Direct thread type discussion away from the gigaflops DLSS theorycrafting thread but now the Direct thread is back so...
unfortunately it didn't even work in the first place

the hardware thread is still loaded with non-hardware discussion

i think the problem with the hardware thread is that 1. There isn't an infinite amount of points to talk about and revisit but discussion must go on and 2. Its inherently easy to start somewhere hardware related and drift off into a tangentially related discussion without consciously realizing it and enforcing rules to prevent this can easily overreach into the fun police

basically this thread was always just a fix for a unfixable problem

I think the casual Switch 2 thread has run its course

It's original charter was to quarantine the Direct thread type discussion away from the gigaflops DLSS theorycrafting thread but now the Direct thread is back so...
it exist because there no guarantee switch 2 will be announced before the direct so they will still be switch 2 speculation after the direct
