do we know if N is using ai to develop their games?
We know they have, Switch Sports used it to create a motion sensing algorithm, Pokemon used it for something as GF has an ML team, etc. Machine learning is so broad that it's probably widely used but we can't pinpoint what exactly devs are using it for

In this calm period before the holidays and new year, I thought I'd post my thoughts/predictions on the how and when Nintendo's next gen heavy hitters might launch over its lifespan. This was less of a wishlist and more of a puzzle game. Given what Nintendo's big teams have last worked on and when they released, what would the tentpole titles be each year? How will they space them out?

Regardless, I don't think we'll see a repeat of the Switch's first 2 years (nearly every major franchise within the first calendar year, followed by a lighter year 2 capped off by Smash and Mario Party). I simply don't think the teams have the marquee titles ready to go year 1 or even 2 for that matter. What this means is that we'll get a more "normal" software cadence with 1-2, maybe 3, tentpole titles per year instead of the front-loaded Switch first year.

All titles are exclusive unless stated otherwise or releasing before Switch 2.

2024: Launch year
  • Donkey Kong - Summer (leading up to launch)
  • Mario Baseball - Summer (leading up to launch)
  • 3D Mario - launch day
  • New Casual IP - launch day
  • Metroid Prime 4 - launch window (before 2025)
  • Pokemon Legends 2 - November
  • cross gen Fire Emblem 4 Echoes - December
2025: The First "Full" Year

  • New non-Casual IP (a la ARMS, Splatoon, etc.) - Spring, before the FY end
  • 3D Kirby - Spring
  • Mario Party - late Spring
  • Zelda Remake - Summer
  • new Monolithsoft IP - Summer
  • Astral Chain 2 - late Summer
  • 2D Metroid - Fall
  • Luigi's Mansion 4 - Fall
  • Ring Fit Adventure 2 - Fall
  • Mario Kart 10 - holiday
  • Pokemon remake - November (interchangeable with PL2)
2026: Most of the Rest + Switch 2 lite

  • A Mario RPG - Winter (could be Dec '25 as well)
  • Switch 2 Sports - Spring
  • Fire Emblem - Spring
  • Splatoon 4 - Summer
  • Animal Crossing - September, alongside NS2 lite
  • Warioware - Fall
  • Bayonetta 4 - Fall
  • Pokemon Gen 10 - November
  • Super Smash Bros. 7 - December

2027: Whatever's Left

  • Pikmin 5 - Spring
  • Princess Peach - Spring
  • Paper Mario - Summer
  • Return of an IP (StarFox, Kid Icarus?) - Summer
  • Metroid Prime 5 - Early Fall
  • 2D Mario - October
  • Pokemon G10 DLC - holiday
  • Zelda - December or possibly delayed to H1 '25 (conflicted on this one)
2028: I don't really have an interesting title. But it will be the next iterations in franchises that had late Switch releases

  • Donkey Kong
  • F Zero
  • New IP
  • Sequels
  • Pokemon Legends 3 or remake - November

"Other" - for titles I wasn't sure where and when to fit in

  • Yoshi - I think some kind of Yoshi title is likely in 2024/2025, given it'll have been 5+ years since CW in 2019. Not sure on the developer or the style of gameplay (3D?).
  • Xenoblade X Remakester - I could see this coming in 2024 in late Summer before the new MS IP in 2025, but I'm not sure if it would be on Switch as well or next gen only. It has been 2 years since XB3 and MS tends to put something out at least every other year.
I admit that MP5 and Zelda in late 2027 is pushing it, but we've been told TOTK was done almost a whole year before it released (had a year of polish) and that MP4 has supposedly been done (held for the same reasons + cross gen). 5 years on from late 2022 (TOTK was likely content complete) and 4 years on from late 2023 I think is enough time for the follow up titles for these series, barring another pandemic or global crisis. But honestly, either of the two titles could very easily slip into March of the next year before the FY ends.

In the end, I think Nintendo's aim will be to get out nearly every "major" franchise out by the 3rd year of the Switch to continue to build its momentum and to avoid a year 2 like Switch's 2018. Some titles will likely be delayed to 2028, but they will shoot for the 4th year worst case, as that is typically the peak year of most consoles.
Two things I should point out...
  1. Pokemon historically lingers on the older system to maximize on the install base. I'd be shocked if Game Freak & TPC jump ship to Switch 2 right away.
  2. NateDrake already said that FE Echoes Genealogy is a Switch 1-only title (I.E. not cross-gen with Switch 2) & has been finished for a while.

Not doubting Nate, but how does he know what’s cross gen or not? That would mean he knows the definition of “cross gen” between Switch 1 and Switch 2.

He probably heard that Echoes Genealogy was only made for the Switch 1, so Nintendo could be counting on backwards compatibility to cover both bases.

Honestly, next to MP4 that Remake is the only switch game im looking forward to (by now i expect Silksong to be playable on switch 2...) and even then im confident that MP4 will be cross gen.

I just want it to release, with 1 or 2 big hitting games, cause currently im just not high on switch. Its not even that switch could not do some amazing games still, but its obvious that big investments and risks are not done anymore from neither nintendo nor third party devs.

Think about it. This time next year, we will most likely be playing a next gen Nintendo system.
Unlikely for me, sadly; I'll be playing the Switch until the next system is somewhat affordable and/or have a good handful of exclusives worth of jumping on it.

That's also why I selfishly hope we can get a year or two of cross-gen titles so I don't miss out on too much stuff ;P

The only system I bought on launch was the Switch itself, but I don't think I'll be doing that anymore due my financial situation these days.

Only the ones who F5'ed amazon/best buy enough to win one. This is gonna be some bloodbath, we're totally gonna destroy some servers.
people are going to make the PS5 launch look like the wii u launch by how much scalping is going to happen second 1 for the switch 2

I should’ve added that I believe gen 10 in 2026 will be the first exclusive, forgot that. And FE4 echoes is one that really depends on how much distance Nintendo wants it to have from Engage. But it could easily come this summer before Switch 2 launches. That particular game is one I wasn’t entirely sure where to slot.

I think people are over reacting here a bit. Yes Switch 2 will probably be hard to get at launch, but it won't be PS5/XSX levels. Those had covid impacting literally every element of manufacturing and distribution.

I'm no Pokemon release expert by any means, but I think we can see the following release schedule:

  • 2024: Pokemon Black & White Remakes released on Switch 1, but playable on Switch 2 via BC
  • 2025: Pokemon Legends 2 Switch 2 exclusive (similar time frame when Switch 1 got it's first Pokemon exclusive)
  • 2026: Pokemon Gen 10 Switch 2 exclusive on series' 30th anniversary
  • 2027: Pokken 2
  • 2028: Pokemon Remakes (First Switch 2 exclusive Pokemon remakes)
  • 2029: Pokemon Legends 3
  • 2030: Pokemon Gen 11
  • 2031: Pokemon remakes released on Switch 2, but playable on Switch 3 via BC

God, I hope not. I am so sick of their rushed release schedule. I know Scarlet and Violet sold 20 million so quickly, but they dropped off really fast. I hope Gamefreak realizes the potential of an Evergreen Pokemon Game on Nintendo Switch 1/2, a Pokemon Game brought to us fans with love and care

Does anyone else feel the Switch 2 release in early 2025?

The Switch 2 feels so likely to me in March 2025, or another month of that nature. The Switch 1's first year success was hugely to the roaring lineup of First Party games between March and Christmas of 2017. Nintendo investors going to be rightfully suspicious of a new Nintendo Successor Console's success, and Nintendo needs another build up of momentum to prove them wrong come a Christmas time

They could give Metroid Prime 4 + Console release in early Fall 2024, Flagship series entry like 3D Mario or Donkey Kong in late Fall 2024, and pray it's enough for Christmas with barely any time to soak in, but this is so not Nintendo. The Switch was the most successful console release of all time, why fix what not broke, especially for a company like Nintendo that previously struggled with releases. Really, the same people who would buy a Fall 2024 release, are the same people who would preorder that Fall 2024 for March 2025 release, it's the same numbers regardless, one can carry a lot more weight in impact though

Anything Spring 2024 feels unlikely because we have so many remakes slotted until Fall 2024, i feel after these are said and done is such a great time to announce the new nintendo

No.

It's time to move on.

It's time to move on.
They'll surely not just fully moving on anytime soon. Releases to switch are years to come i feel. The Nintendo Switch is the greatest selling console of all time by miles at it's price point! Most Switch owners are very casual, and need eased into a move on, with a lot more convincing than a Fall 2024 release with maximum 2 first party games before Christmas. Seems another shot in the foot from nintendo to just "move on" like they did on Wii U

I meant the fans need to move on lol.

Same for me. 2025 at the earliest.

So many casual fans not moving on in time for a Fall 2024 release though

Bertha and Bartholemew are a happily married couple. Their 2 children, Gerald and Gertrude are now 12 years old and 11 years old respectively. They have a family game night every Friday to play their only 3 switch games, Mario Kart, Smash Bros Ultimate, and Super Mario Party. Just this Christmas, they got their kids the new game Mario Wonder! They love all of these games, and are looking for more. Then Gerald sees a video about the New Nintendo, releasing alongside a new Metroid game. Gerald exclaims "Metroid Prime 4? What the hell is Metroid?! This looks like a rip off Fortnite!" Then Gerald clicks off the switch 2 announcement to watch MrBeast Gaming

Timothy J Putzer has got all the Flagship First Party games on the Nintendo. He 100% his copies of Breath of The Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Kirby and The Forgotten Land. He's working to 100% Tears Of The Kingdom. But he has so many more games yet to buy he's heard are amazing here on Nintendo Switch. And Timothy has a new love interest in his life, and just got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with her when she's over. But then he hears about the new Nintendo Switch. Timothy is working a 10-6 grave shift and can barely keep the heating on in his house. He hears about the new Nintendo Switch, and tunes in to listen to the new games to come, alongside his girlfriend. "Hmmm, I do not know what Metroid is. Sounds kind of cool. $400 for a Nintendo Switch?!!"

Emily Kathleen Clancy is 16 years old and has got a horrible relationship with her mother! She is always vaping in the house! And will never get off Splatoon 3 to do her chores or homework. She's failing all of her classes! The new Switch 2 trailer drops, but Emily doesn't even hear about it! She's too busy watching TikTok and eating Hot Cheetos! But her mother, desperate to repair her relationship with her daughter, sees the new Nintendo Switch 2 commercial on TV. Emily loves her Nintendo Switch. But then, the games are shown in the trailer. Her mother is thinking "Wait a minute. That's the same game I already bought her with the painting wars! This is just Mario Kart in HD! This is all the games i already bought her! Who the hell is the Iron Man rip-off shooting Aliens?"

Gerald will be asking his mother and father for some Fortnite V Bucks for Christmas, Timothy will be buying himself real neccesities and maybe a Smash Ultimate for him and his girlfriend, and Emily is getting a lump of coal

Nintendo needs these casuals to buy their new console, or investors are going to get livid! They short the stock, and we ending up with another Wii U! Fall 2024 with Metroid, Pokemon's Black and White Remake that took a month to develop, and just maybe Mario shoveled in last minute, may just not cut it. Nintendo needs time for word of mouth to spread, so everyone is aware of exactly the present they could receive in Christmas 2025! If this is really a new successor with an exclusive lineup

This is my humble case for the Switch 2's March 2025 release

Edit: the freshly potty trained little fellas who convinced their parents to fork over $260 for a Switch Lite and Pokemon Scarlet are certainly not buying this new Nintendo Switch until Gen 10 in 2025. Their parents probably getting divorced anyways and don't want to hear it. And them animal crossing fans mad as hell they not buying Nintendo's baloney Fall 2024 lineup

Yes they will be fully moving on. It doesn’t matter it’s their best selling console ever. It’ll get games for a couple more years. The system will be limited and sell out no matter what. Casuals come along for the ride throughout the years, not the beginning.

You could have said all this about moving on from the Wii to the Wii U. You should not get to saying the success is guaranteed when this is a tried and flopped method from Nintendo in the previous generation to this one, in my opinion

Actually, Nintendo not moving on from the Wii in terms of design, gimmick etc. for the Wii U was one of the reason for its flop.

This was not one of the reasons for it's flop. The Wii U flopped because Nintendo let Wii owners forget the Wii even existed. Then gave them no reason to remember Nintendo, because they forgot to make games for the Wii U until 2014

Nintendo will not move on from the Switch in terms of design, gimmick, etc for the Switch 2. This will only be beneficial for Switch 2 to market to previous Switch owners, and overall recognizability coming with trust from those who did not own a Switch. I can only imagine what you think Furukawa's going to pull out of his ass instead of a new Switch 😂 but it surely will flop without the hybrid

If people confuse your new console for an addon, there went something incredibly wrong.

Switch still has obvious crowd please games that aren't big ask they could release in second half 2024-2026. Nintendogs, Tomodachi, basic GC/Wii/3DS remasters, another Mario Party, another Kirby spinoff, another Pokemon spinoff, etc. Along with titles like Mario Baseball, Pokemon Gen 5 remake, and the rumored FE4 remake, which would all require some more time but make a lot of sense to be late Switch 1 games playable on Switch 2 via BC.

Switch 2 in its first 2 years on the market should be focused on getting Nintendo's biggest guns on the system. New 3D Mario, New Mario Kart, New Smash Bros, New Splatoon, New Animal Crossing New Mainline Fire Emblem, New Xenoblade/Monolith RPG, etc

This would be because they moved on from the old gimmick, then added a new one, and consumers thought this new gimmick was an add on to the Wii

I can not wait for Mario Sluggers on Switch. Wii was one of my favorite local multiplayer games of all time. It was so easy to understand i could invite any friend over to play it and they would understand the game after an inning, yet so much fun and so dynamic every inning was some new. We would go 1 to 1 picking our lineup getting all strategical and shit while still picking our favorites, with friends that never owned a Nintendo in their life. Such a fun game, definitely been my most anticipated sports game

I for sure see the new Mario Sluggers getting a release Summer of 2025. Imagine how pretty the stadium could be on Switch 2, such a great showcase game for this new Switch. Would keep me busy until that next Mario Kart

It seems like you aren‘t a big Zelda fan.
😂 I looked it up that's a hilarious name for the guards. Indeed the old zeldas too boring for me i can't lie i never been a huge fan. Link's Awakening was something special though, and obviously BOTW TOTK were crowning achievements and I loved my time with them. You take care though brother i got to get to bed it's 4am, have a great rest your day/night

The Switch itself is already 6-7 years old, and iirc has the power of X360/PS3 (maybe a bit better). While Xbox and Sony have much more powerful machines in their hands, and thus it's time to move on. The sales are declining, which would make it more reasonable to release a successor. BC would make it more user friendly to play upcoming Switch games on the Switch 2. What I'm saying is, although the Switch has a huge fanbase, it's getting pretty outdated and being more stale. Though luck for those who just got a Switch this christmas, but they'll jump in the next system at a later time.
The Switch 2 doesn't need to have all those Switch players in it's early moments, but rather spread that playerbase in over 5-6 years, to keep the sales flowing like a creek. If the whole Switch playerbase is gonna jump in at the start, Nintendo's having a hard time to make games for everyone, which would led to negative output. If the Switch 2 doesn't have a big enough playerbase as they predict they wanted to have, it's a trouble for them aswell, but they tend to have more time for games on their hands, I assume. They really need to have a good balance for their sales. And like I said, Switch itself is getting pretty outdated, and it's time to move on.

Crazy that on almost 2 decade old tech switch is still selling gangbuster, guess shows nintendo innovation with the hybird model was such a great idea. A lesser machine wouldnt do as much with the same specs

the performance level is probably 2 decades-ish

No because 2024 holiday sales would be absolute dire. Nintendo will need to have new hardware out in the market by next year's shopping season.

PS5 wasn't even behind PS4 shipment levels the first year. If there was a big difference in how hard it was to get early on, it was thanks to demand.
MdAFBBv.png

Nintendo has never shipped numbers as big as PS4/PS5 early on, so if they want the stock situation to be better they'll have to produce at record levels and/or aim for a less appealing product than PS5.

One thing about Switch is Nintendo hasn't squeezed the remaining juice out of it yet. They still can launch a final SKU (as everyone guesses a Switch Lite OLED), different colors and limited editions... There are still tons of ways to revitalize the system, millions of Switch owners still haven't replaced their old hardware with new ones. Nintendo could offer even more attractive options for them.

They sure can have one last big holiday season with Switch alone. And the successor could be severely supply limited if it launches next year, Nintendo will definitely have prepared Switch to help the holiday sales.

Heck they could give it an actual price drop and not an inflation price drop where "keeping it the same price is actually a price drop since they could have made it more expensive".

It's funny if you think about it: Nintendo is making money with a 300$ System while Sony and Microsoft lose money on 500$ Systems.

I think Early 2025 is possible consider how well Nintendo Switch 1 sold during March.

Other possibilities this could happen:
1. They do not want to compete with PS5 Pro and Xbox Series Revision during Holiday season.
2. The content isn't ready for Holiday launch so they held it back few months. This happen with NSW with Zelda original reports and I think Nintendo themself stated it would be coming Holiday 2016 but change their minds in April announcing Zelda will be on NX and only game at E3 2016.
3. Supply issues causes them to have to push it back to meet damands.

I don't get this angle... if the person just got a Switch, they have tons of games yet to play? like... 7 years worth of content, from 1st Party alone is a lot to catch up.
Yeah, that is true. But if the person just got a Switch, and in the first quarter of the new year Nintendo shows the new system, and is having BC, wouldn't that be just a stab in the back kinda thing? Because with BC, you can play the 7 years worth of content on the Switch 2 aswell, while having Switch 2 exclusive games on there aswell.

And Timothy has a new love interest in his life, and just got Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with her when she's over.
This is my humble case for the Switch 2's March 2025 release
Why should I care about these heterosexuals?

I have gay money to spend on Xenoblades and Metroids in summer 2024. Why not let me do that and let word of mouth get to your hypothetical casuals for Christmas 2024? What's the advantage of waiting until 2025? Will the few extra months of build up be worth a year's delay?

I honestly believe that we don't see Switch 2 release in 2025 because they don't want their first major holiday season to be viewed as "Nintendo in third place as gamers rush to buy Playstation and Xbox for Grand Theft Auto VI"

Releasing in 2024 gives them the opportunity to pretty much have a great first holiday season without much competition, especially if PS5 Pro releases around the same time at $550-600 as some expect.

Assuming the first couple of years of the Switch 2 are worth to jump in, of course; without mention the good chance of having cross-gen titles for a while.

I got my PS4 in July 2020, the PS5 was just around the corner.. and I still don't have much of a reason to think about getting a PS5 today and I have a moderately extensive list of PS4 games yet to play ;P

Oh no. But the shareholders want mobile games, so what about the shareholders? We have to think about the shareholders. How to live without pitiful gatcha? It’s impossible! They are so smart! And above all, what would the completely incompetent financial analysts say?
Nintendo's share price has reached an all time high, or at least a long time high. This is now at a time where their efforts on mobile are probably the lowest they've been since they started on mobile, and there's not a single rumour (that I'm aware of) of them planning new mobile games.

So it doesn't look like shareholders are demanding mobile at all.

To be fair, that's always a risk when buying hardware, especially one that's been on the market for so long.

That won't happen if the successor is supply limited. No matter how big a corporation you are it's always difficult to launch a new tech in massive numbers, especially during these times where the chip shortage is still going on. PS5 and Xbox SX couldn't normalize the stock until their 3rd year, I don't think things are in Nintendo's favor either.

2024 launch or not, Nintendo is still gonna push the current Switch for the holiday as if it's the only system they have. It's still gonna have a banger lineup and some limited edition consoles to support that. Maybe a small chance but I still believe in the existence of the final SKU.
