Really glad to see this thread make it over. It's been a great resource in years past to know the development crews behind Nintendo's internal software.

That would explain it. Honestly I'm hoping it's a side project and their next main game is 3D.

EDP 9's next game is F-Zero I'm hoping, this generation doesn't need a MK9. Now feels like the best time for them to do an F-Zero

Would EPD10 also be a group to keep an eye on next year? Maybe it's a bit soon for them due to Mario Maker 2 in 2019, but I would think a new Pikmin may be on the way soon?

Apparently Pikmin 4 was rebooted in 2019, so I wouldn’t count on it showing up next year.

I’m very excited to see what Next Level Games has cooked up. Luigi’s Mansion 3 has been out for two years, and with their purchase at the beginning of this year, presumably they’ve only been growing since then. Hopefully they are ready to show us what they’ve been up to next year.

Of all of Nintendo’s teams, NLG intrigues me the most. They’ve been similar to Retro Studios of their own, reviving once dormant franchises, like Punch Out and Luigi’s Mansion. Curious to see where they go next.

I would like to believe that a good Pikmin could be finished in 3 years, but I'm certainly not counting on it. It would be nice though...

Same.

They've been on my personal shortlist of "Who Could Really Do an Awesome Star Fox Game" for the longest. I can only hope they and someone on Nintendo's brass sees it the same way.

I look back at Federation Force, for example, and I see a whole lot of ideas that could've been better attributed to a Star Fox motif than Metroid.

I can’t wait to see what NLG is doing. They can seriously do it all. I hope they look in Nintendo’s vault and do something nintendo doesn’t do. If they want to do a new Diddy Kong Racing I’d be happy. If they want to try Star Fox or a new Wario game I’d be happy. Just let them have 2 full development teams going at the same time. Their talents are too good.

Count me among those looking forward to what NLG is cooking up next, taking the reigns on a new Star Fox or bringing Wario ( and Waluigi ) back in the 3rd dimension were prime choices in my mind as well. Earlier I had also thought that they might be a good team to take over the DK franchise and finally deliver us another 3D entry, if only on the basis of their impressive animation chops and their ability to combine action and humour well. But with all the smoke floating around a new EPD Donkey Kong that doesn't seem very likely anymore.

In an unrelated question, I know Takaya Imamura of Star Fox and F-Zero fame retired earlier this year, but did we ever figure out what happened to Tadashi Sugiyama. He worked with Imamura on number of projects including several Star Fox and F-Zero games but he's been MIA since 2016's Tank troopers on 3DS. I know he was older then Imamura so it's possible he just retired quietly without it being announced, but was wondering if anyone had done some detective work and figured out what became of him. I feel like he might be one of the last higher ups in the EPD divisions to have any sort of familiarity or interest in bringing those two series back, so I hope he is still around. But if he has retired he has more than earned his r&r he was involved with truly great games over the years.

NLG’s first project as an official first party studio is gonna be so exciting. I can’t wait to see what they’re cooking. They’ve always felt like the most wildcard Nintendo studio, you could hand them any IP and they’d work their magic to make something special.

I think GameFreak should go into: Mexican Standoff kinda style.

They obviously have good idea regarding design and what not (cause the game still sell) but GOD DAMMIT they tech quality is sooo low its borderlines annoying. I would 100% op for them to have a creative/ Director role and let literally any other Nintendo team handle the development (Imagine a Pokemon by Monolith)

But I guess GF owning 1/3 of TPC gives them enough leverage against Nintendo for them to keep being main/ sole developer for the main line games in the franchise... which I think the need as hell cause their other endeavors have not make any real ripples as far as im aware

I know what IP i want them to make , that’s right ! A new …IP. for real as much as it would be great to see them revive a new one or with their excellent animation work see them tackle something like star fox or *taps signature*, I kinda would be more excited to see them tackle something entirely new .

We have the most cause for hope in Game Freak in a while with Arceus, so I think we should pause this line of thinking until we know how that turns out.

That would be great as well. I mentioned Star Fox and Wario above as the seem like reasonable fits and I would be very happy to see those franchises return, however the most exciting prospect for me would also be an entirely new IP or equally the revival of a long gone IP in a new form/genre. When I say long gone I mean something like Ice Climbers, Mach Rider, Star Tropics and The Mysterious Murasame Castle where the would only be taking the very basic concepts/setting of the original and forming something completely new around it, something akin to what Sakurai and co. did for Kid Icarus Uprising when compared to the Original Kid Icarus.

I've proposed Raw Thrills for Mach Rider. Battle land and air based Quadrunners on the Mach Bike with all sorts of crazy setpieces going on around you.

So I know this isn’t going to be a popular take. Is retro consider first party? I personally find it worrisome how much people take up for the time in-between games for them. It’s been 7 years since their last game I believe. I’m not sure if they did the port of tropical freeze to switch or someone else. I just think it’s take too long in-between games for them. Especially for a studio many believe to be among the best.

Retro is fully owned by Nintendo so they are fully first party. They did the Tropical Freeze port in 2018, and from what is rumored have also nearly finished an ambitious remaster of Metroid Prime 1 along side working on Metroid Prime 4.

They worked on a new IP for years after Tropical Freeze on the Wii U failed. It sounds like it was cancelled. It just happens so that leaves a big gap now. They ported TF to Switch in 2018 and now have a Metroid Prime remaster coming.

I'd play it, Cruis'n Blast is fantastic though obviously quite limited in scope. I'd love to see what they could do with some decent backing from Nintendo. And if Nintendo isn't interested in a Mach Rider revival I'd always thought Raw Thrills would be a good choice to take over the Excite franchise, since Monster Games working relationship with Nintendo has seemingly ended. I could always go for more Cruis'n as well.

I don't think it's unreasonable to have been concerned about Retro Studios. They very clearly went through a rough patch and at least one failed project after Tropical Freeze. That does happen sometimes, unfortunately.

But as the others have said yes, they're first party, and they have likely been working on a Metroid Prime remaster as well as Metroid Prime 4. The next couple of years will hopefully mark a welcome return for Retro.

Hi everyone! This is my first post on this new forum! I can't wait to contribute to this new platform. I love making and posting GIFs so you may see some of those from me!

For example, I couldn't find a high quality Monolith Soft GIF, so I made one myself!

I'm also really excited to see what Next Level Games will do next. They are one of the best game animation developers in the world and one of Nintendo's most technically capable studios. So happy Nintendo scooped them up this year. Can't wait to see MS, NLG, and Retro's projects.

Speaking of NLG, I uploaded the original 360p version of their Catalyst pitch vid:

The only vid that was available until now was a lower quality 288p vid that was visibly compressed.

I wish NLG would make a new IP as well. Maybe some day!

Im giving them the benefit of doubt, but they do have a lot to work off to recover good will (speaking mostly from the technical standpoint)
Like, I would understand the desire to be more independent from just 1 game, but why would you split off your team (that is already small even by what Nintendo uses) from the 1st installment of a "Console Pokemon", to try to rush out 1st your Town something games leaving Pokemon Sword/ Shield as a mediocre game. (again technically speaking wise)

All companies you see in the OP under "Nintendo Subsidiaries" are "first party" since Nintendo fully owns them - that is what "subsidiary" means.

The trailer/pitch isn't badly made, but I'm not sad that this was cancelled.
I would love a new IP from them, but definitely not in the style of Catalyst.

it just feels like peak 360-era design, through and through. I'd think they wouldn't pitch something like this now.

Eh didn’t look too interesting. I would still love to see NLG try a WRPG or a first person shooter for Nintendo.

Even then, it's pretty cool to see what NLG are capable of when coming up with their own take on a "AAA hardcore"-esc game. The "PS360-era" thing makes sense. Obviously in the decade since and now with Nintendo's FULL backing, a new take would be eons better looking I'd imagine.

hopefully the rumors are true and EPD 8 has possibly two titles in the work with the 2D game being Donkey Kong handled by a younger staff while the main 3D Mario team is working on something else.

Yeah that’s the thing. With Nintendo now if they made like a WRPG it would look vastly better than that video you showed. They’ve only gotten better. Same as Naughty Dog has only gotten better as a studio.

Metroid Dread credits are up thanks to MetalLord and RBM.

Kyoto Report Credits - Metroid Dread

Fumi Hayashi and Takehiko Hosokawa swapped Director and Assistant Director roles from last time. I'm guessing Hayashi was actually traveling to Spain and Hosokawa was Kyoto bound. Very odd for Hosokawa to be second in command.

New EPD composers did the music although Yamamoto and Hamano were still in charge.

What does everyone think EPD 9 is doing? I’m not even sure what to think anymore. It’s been incredibly long since their last Switch game. I’m honestly surprised we haven’t had an announcement still.

I don't know how major they are but you could add Hamster (Arcade Archives series) and Jupiter (Picross e and S series) to the IP licensing collaborations.

Ah, was wondering if you made it here! Welcome aboard! :D

I wonder if Hosokawa was busy with something else in Japan. Maybe, Sakamoto got him to codirect Tomodachi Life Switch or something

Why has F Zero been abandoned , even starfox got revived in the wii u era, It is really sad man
Maybe non of the games, at least after the first on SNES sold that well. I guess GX was make or break for it and it must've done REALLY poorly. Nintendo supposedly (or was it debunked) attempted to get Criterion on one for Wii U but they declined. So if that was true, then they had ambitions to try again.

It's sad that Mario Kart has the monopoly on Nintendo racing games. Hell I'm shocked Cruis'n Blast even EXISTS for that reason... and we got Mario Kart Arcade GP DX in the arcade anyway, so even that market was covered! :p

... I want Monster Games to come home and make Excite Truck 2 (not bots, actual big damn trucks again). :(

I'm guessing an older IP like Punch Out! while also working on the next Mario Kart game. Hopefully we see what they are working on some time next year.

I believe it was the Suzak-developed F-Zero games for the GBA (GP Legend and Climax) that tanked the series. GX had decent (but not great) sales, at least in the US. Nagoshi said it sold 1.5 million copies worldwide, but that seems too high based on what it sold in the US and figuring the US to be the game's biggest market.
