2024 feels like it "Could" be a big big big year for Nintendo and fans alike. If the Switch successor really is coming out this year then it is my opinion that we will at least see a brand new 3D Mario in 2024 along with some other big and impressive titles and releases. I still maintain that a gorgeous open world 3D Mario game is something that I think could very well happen and be as glorious as you imagine it to be.

If the Switch successor is to be revealed in March as some people speculate, then would Nintendo bother with a January Direct or just wait until March and just deliver us an epic Direct focusing on Switch 2 mostly and a few cross-gen games for regular Switch.

I remain excited and hopeful that 2024 will be one of Nintendo's biggest years yet. We are mere days away from existing in a year where we may finally get new hardware and some ambitious next gen Nintendo games... So Famiboards, HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL???

general direct in january/february to give one last boost to releases in the beginning of the year (and probably one or two announcements as always).

new hardware in march or in june at the latest (imo)

Combining both a general direct and a brand new console announcement seem messy. And it's not like they won't tease new projects alongside a Switch 2 (just like how the original Switch trailer gave us our first look of Mario Odyssey).

If stuff gets announced earlier I'd love it but Nintendo might just take their time.

Hell yeah. This will be my first time playing Another Code R with next month release, I'd be crazy happy if Nintendo allows me to play The Last Window for the first time. I'll have my bourbon ready, I'll accompany Mr. hyde this time.
So far with Another Code, I really like the voice direction of the cast, specially Ashley. So whenever we get Hotel Dusk and Last Window, I hope we get a snarky sounding va for Kyle.

Just to clarify, I'm very excited for the next entries in the usual suspects (3D Mario, Zelda, etc). Personally, I find those aren't as exciting as announcements nobody sees coming*. Things like Another Code Recollection, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, or New Pokemon Snap truly came out of nowhere to shock everyone. Even if the games in question don't reach the quality of 3D Mario or Zelda, there's a lot of time between those mega hits that needs to be filled with cool stuff.

*Obviously real leaks/leakers like Pyoro set expectations, though the leak itself is still shocking that it's genuine.

🎶 Hello darkness my old friend 🎶

I'm predicting Feburary. Switch 2 reveal is later, probably March or April. There's no first party titles currently slated beyond Showtime in March (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_in_video_games) and we're far too late for a Switch 2 reveal to have a slate ready by then unless a miracle happens. So there's going to be a transition slate that needs to be announced to bridge the gap between Showtime and the Switch 2 launch / first year lineups.

This also gives them a good opportunity to dive more into Showtime's bespoke gameplay which I think it sorely needs at this point as multi-modal/bespoke games can be fairly uneven and that's the only concern I have with that title which was looking pretty good last time it was shown.

And Splatoon 3 Chill Season ends at the end of February 2024 so this gives them an opportunity to promote that and hopefully drop the release date for Side Order which is a "Spring 2024 (at the earliest)" window. But people have supposedly been datamining it already from some of the recent updates so that feels like an imminent release.

Other than that the only things I'm hoping for would be a release window for Onion Games' Stray Children and a localization announcement for Retro Game Challenge 1+2 (which is dropping in Japan in February).

Too drunk to speculate properly

Nintendo will do stuff

People will be both mad and happy

All events will both confirm and rule out new hardware, including the launch and widespread availability of new hardware
Sounds like you're speculating perfectly fine bud

Oh dang I can't believe I didn't see this thread until now!

For me personally, 2024 has so much mystery going into it, to the point where I genuinely can't give a proper guess as to what will happen in these first couple of months. Nintendo could go so many different directions here and it's hard to tell what they'll do. It's going to be an important year and I'm sure they are trying to calculate everything to work in their favor, but it will be tough.

This could be a very happy thread or a very despairing one within the next month or two, but either way it will be fun and I'm strapped in for the ride.

Week 1 - What are you most looking forward to and hoping for from Nintendo in 2024?
Looking forward to: Switch 2 announcement and release / seeing how they send the Switch out in style
Hoping for: A quieter year so I can work my backlog

In all seriousness, I'm excited for the new hardware but mostly to see what the new "gimmick" is this time. I'm at the point where I don't really care how many pixels it can push. Tell me how I'm going to be playing the games and what new experiences are going to open up with the new device and I'm sold. Price is the next factor after that (it had better be under $400). I don't have astronomical expectations for the system. It's going to be a Nintendo system and all that entails. And that's enough for me.

But there is a part of me that has acknowledged in recent months that I don't have as much time for games these days and I need to slow down my purchases and maybe I'd be happy finally going through the "library", "wine cellar", "doomsday shelter", or whatever cute name I want to give my backlog. There's so many good games I have yet to play or replay that I feel like I should prioritize that more next year rather than chasing the new shiny. So having fewer releases due to the transition would be a good opportunity to focus on what I already have, or even spending more time with board games, and less buying things with the ambition of "I'd like to play this at some point".

It's also just really nice to be going into 2024 with very little known about what the new year will bring and that gives next year a nice feeling like anything can happen and that's exciting in its own right.

How great software wise for Nintendo will come down to the Switch 2. Whatever the launch is and how many months will it have in 2024. 3D Mario to me is a given to release in 2024. But will the Switch 2 release in May or September or November.

Ok maybe not 2024 but still

The legendary "yes" tweet will be real.

We already back, huh. Missed this thread, it is what got me into this site to begin with after all

Nope. No Pokemon games until Pokemon Day at the end of February
Not necessarily. In 2020, we had a January Pokemon Direct which announced the Remake of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon along with the SWSH dlc

If they have another spinoff for March like PMD, then Pokemon Day would be too late and they might a January announcement again

I was just about to say Peach is already there, but then I remembered that the Rescue Team remakes released just a couple of weeks before New Horizons.

They WILL announce switch 2 in February and release it in the Summer. Because that's what I want to happen, so it will happen

The Great Direct Date Guess Event Badge Challenge – Featuring Switch 2! (Deadline to enter is December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time)
We had a lot of wild fun predicting the Direct date in The Legendary Speculator Challenge last thread, but this time I want to open up the guessing game to as many people as possible! The Great Direct Date Guess Event is a badge challenge with two badges up for grabs! It’s very simple to participate, either reply to this post or @ message me in a post and tell me what dates you believe the Nintendo Direct will air and the Switch 2 will be announced in Pacific Time. If you do not reply or @ message me, I will not consider it an official entry. The deadline to enter is December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time and you'll know I have accepted your prediction when I Yeah! your post. At that point I will screencap your answer and ultimately compile a chart in the OP to track participants, so make sure you’ve been added to it by January 4th. You do not have to predict both the Direct and the Switch 2 dates if you don’t want to, but there are no downsides to doing both. For The Great Direct Date Guess Event, you only need the dates to be clear (ie Wednesday January 3rd or Thursday February 4th), so you do not have to worry at all about predicting the time further otherwise.

If you believe an event would air or be announced at midnight Pacific time, for the purposes of proper guessing please put the second of the two days involved. For example, if you believe the Switch 2 will be announced at midnight between Tuesday January 2nd and Wednesday January 3rd Pacific Time, please put your guess down for January 3rd.

@Aurc is helping with creating the awesome badges for this event and we have one design ready to share right now! Winners of predicting the Direct air date will get the Direct Date Champion Badge!

Winners of predicting the Switch 2 Public Announcement Date will get the Switch 2 Date Legend Badge! (This includes a video, tweet, press release etc.) Like the Switch 2 itself, it is still being diligently worked on behind the scenes, but once the design is ready, I will share it in the thread and update this post! Thanks again Aurc for all of your help :)

So yes, please make sure to get your guesses in by December 31st at 11:59 PM Pacific Time! Have fun Fami!

Update: Here's the design for the Switch 2 Date Legend Badge! I hope one of us manages to win it, so definitely get your guesses in soon :)

Joe I'm sorry this is on me, I incorrectly first asked for the announcement date and later on the air date of the Direct in the post above. It should have been the Direct Air Date in both sentences. Can you give me your guess for the Direct Air Date?

I've corrected the post above so hopefully no one else will give a Direct announcement prediction. Your Switch 2 guess is all good.

Thanks for letting me know! My guess for the Direct air date will be 10 AM Pacific on February 7th.

the fall direct was so freaking mid that another, somehow worse direct would possibly kill me

While I agree, I feel like the overall mood is cautious optimism. Yes, the announcements have been lighter for the past year or so compared to what we are used to, but I'm hopeful that Nintendo is just holding back for the big blowout with the Switch 2. If we have another 2017 type year on the horizon with the first 10 months of the Switch 2, I am willing to forgive a couple of weak directs.

Expecting the usual February direct this year. And I refuse to begin thinking about when Switch 2 will be announced lol I will just let it happen when it happens and continue to not expect it. So I voted for no Switch 2 announcement this direct.

Week 1 - What are you most looking forward to and hoping for from Nintendo in 2024?
I am most looking forward to the Peach game! Peach has always been my fav and also my main in smash and I am excited to play a 3D game with her in the lead. Everything shown so far (as little as it has been) has looked absolutely wonderful!!

In terms of hoping for, I would love for a AA7 announcement. With the Apollo Justice Trilogy coming in January to switch everything (minus investigations) will be on switch. I don't expect it to come out in 2024, but just a smaller teaser this year would be great. Something like the Layton announcement we got this year.

I'd really love to see an Ace Attorney 7 announcement too! It's been way too long! I also wouldn't mind if it was a bit of a long term prospect announcement, but I hope we won't have to wait more than a year for it all the same.

I've been thinking for a long time about a fami thread when the next system is revealed where we help each other out with nabbing preorders. Is that something folks would be interested in? 😃 There would be parameters to keep out spammers/bots.

I am going to go with Wednesday, February 7th at 2 pm Pacific time for the Nintendo Direct.

I can't wait for the inevitable announcement of another port of an old PS4 game that blows up into Switch 2 discussion split between the two sides of "they just used PS4 footage for the announcement trailer like most of these ports" and "this one frame looks very slightly different, this is the game running on Switch 2"

I'll make an official prediction for the badge challenge later, but I do think this is going to be a pretty fun Speculation thread in the sense there is a ton of possibilities for how this could play out.

Currently we are in Christmas week and nothing is expected here. This is a great week to get cozy, hang out with the thread, make some early predictions, and dream some good dreams. But then we have New Years Week and suddenly a Switch 2 announcement becomes a real possibility every day. I think that first week is safe still, but all bets are definitely off in 2024.

Things will likely get real the following week which I think I'm going to call Pivotal Week. It's a blank week with nothing happening in it, but that's why it is perhaps the most decisive week of the thread as it is full of possibilities. Perhaps a Switch 2 announcement is made, perhaps a January Direct drops, perhaps it is just a Peach Showtime Trailer (which iirc somewhat lines up with when Kirby got some news back in 2022), or perhaps it is just nothing. No matter what happens though, this is the week that will seemingly determine the course of the thread as the following week is Another Code week which would be a weird thing to overshadow, but not impossible, and the following week from there is Under Night In-Birth II week which I don't think Nintendo will touch. The first and second weeks of February do seem like great times for a Direct and Switch 2 announcements, and probably are where I'll settle for guesses for the badge challenge, but we got a ways until then.

If this were a Splatfest topic:

Shiver = Team February
Frye = Team January
Big Man = Team March

(Yes, it breaks the usual sequential ordering, but we all know that Shiver has to lead the winning team!)

There's a lot of variables to this one. Personally, I don't think any of the currently announced games need time in a Direct. They all seem like randomly dropped Twitter trailers. I'm sure they'll be great games, but they definitely give off end-of-life-cycle vibes. I also suspect a few games that are currently finished might have been pushed out to bolster the new console's first year lineup, like the Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War remake. There might be some smaller 3rd party ports coming, but I imagine most big studios have had their hands on Switch 2 dev kits for a while and are busy working on next gen ports.

Speaking of the Switch 2, Nintendo will likely want to announce the it before the end of their fiscal year in March to raise stock value and reassure investors. So, my gut feeling is that there will not be a Direct at all. Nintendo knows fans are waiting for the Switch successor and no new information on that could overshadow any games they announce, if they even have any left to announce for the Switch.

If I had to choose though, I'd say a Mini Direct in late January, an announcement trailer for the Switch 2 in February with a full unveiling in March.

My guess is that the direct in February will be very light on announcements for new games and then either later the month (or in March) there will be the Switch NG announcement.

I expect the final Switch focused Direct in February to fill in release date gaps and maybe reveal Metroid Prime 4 or Fire Emblem 4 remake. Then a teaser for Switch 2 in like March or April, full blowout around E3 time in June, release in September-November period. I think Nintendo would much rather have it out before November so as to give third party holiday titles room to breath. A game like Odyssey launched in October for instance

For launch window, I expect Metroid Prime 4 cross gen, new Mario Kart and new 3D Mario. Probably some Unova based Pokémon game that will have a Switch SKU only, but still be playable on Switch 2 due to backwards compatibility, a la B2W2 coming out post 3DS release. Hoping the blowout event also reveals whatever's next from Monolith Soft. And if we're truly blessed then the Kong will grace us once more, but I doubt it

3rd party wise, i really hope they announce a switch port for nier replicant in this direct
I finally started playing this on PS4 a few days ago! After having owned it for like two years lol
