StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (Read the staff posts before commenting!)

Hey guys, taking into account that the Nintendo Switch was revealed in October 2016, and then launched in March of the following year, do you think we will see an official Switch 2 reveal before the end of this year?
Yeah. Maybe by the end of the month. But I think the last week of October is more likely.

MS is barely acquiring Activision by the skin of its teeth. No way international governments allow MS to take over Nintendo.

Turns out there's plenty of info buried in the attachments of that PDF, including hardware info -- for Microsoft/Xbox. I do not care about those, so I won't be passing it along. But if anyone's interested, download PX7011 and look at the attachments (which are mostly more PDFs).

lmao, this is the best series of posts in fami history.

Yes, in fact I'm going to bet it will be Thursday October 19th at 3pm Dublin time and will precede Mario Wonder's release in Japan

Unlikely. They want to capitalize on the Switch's last holiday season as much as possible. If they reveal the successor it will tank sells pretty hard and Nintendo doesn't want that. I see a reveal in Summer 2024 as the most realistic scenario with a release in late fall tbh.

You should take a listen to Nate's podcast from last week monday.

A lot of the public buying a Switch for little Johnny's Christmas will not know or care, the Switch buying public is not made up almost entirely of enthusiast gamers that spend endless hours on gaming forums.

While this has historically never been the case, a dip in winter for a leap in spring is a calculated and sound strategy

so is it true xbox is actually making a handheld btw?
No. In fact, they actually say that handhelds aren't a priority because their 1P wouldn’t bother developing for it. Read the "Not in scope for 1st party" section below:

People that have waited this long to buy into the ecosystem are not going to be swayed by a spring release of a more expensive console.

So will every manufacturer be on Arm for their next systems? Would that help them have the scalability that Apple has with their devices? Cause MS seems to have been considering a handheld and given the success of the Switch, I wouldn't be shocked if Sony was also considering some kind of console/handheld combo with the same library in the future.

Doesn't seem to have been funded as of when those slides were made.

It makes more sense for MS than for Sony to do a handheld, considering their first party already targets the series s and pc. But I guess AMD tech is not quite there yet for an affordable handheld with easy Series S ports. But I could see it happening in the future.

Funny, i was always under the impression that people these days are well informed considering how easy it has become to get informations without even actively looking for them. I mean, even the kids of today are all literally just casually running around with a smartphone in their pockets and are essentially online 24/7, you would assume they somehow get such infos somehow from someone or somewhere.

Well, we will see how things will turn out. I will stand by my assumption of a Summer 2024 reveal, but of course i'm open for an earlier reveal date surprise.

I know it's anecdotal but I worked in retail for years, selling video games in a big chain of cultural stores here in France, and for a while I thought exactly the same... until the 2019 Switch revision. All day long, I'd have a ton of kids, parents and even old people whose VG knowledge was limited to Mario, Pikachu and Fifa, come to me with the Switch boxes asking if it was the revised version because they wouldn't buy it otherwise. They wouldn't know the exact details of why it was different, they just "knew it was better than the day one Switch" because they heard it from kids all around who heard it from their favorite influencers.

I can even see this with my nephews who are 7 and 11. They barely play video games but because they and their friends watch a lot of influencers and streamers on Twitch talking about these things, they know just as much and base their gifts on these information (my nephew got an OLED this way... I don't even have an OLED!!)

I think the bigger problem is that you need multiple breakthroughs in technology for a handheld Series S to happen. And at that point, it would be a quite costly endeavor. A Xbox handheld would be positioned below home console Xbox.

Honestly, Xbox really missed out the portable Xbox window when Microsoft cancelled the AMD Van Gogh SoC. They could have built an Xbox Series P back in 2020. Instead they let Valve take the chip and now it's too late.

You know, these two last weeks were pretty insane, two leaks for ReDraketed, a Nintendo Direct that screamed "I'm the last Switch only one", today's MS leaks.

I like that.

New kids gets born everyday.

Oh no, please, the Mrs. and I already have three. We're already outnumbered.

I know everyone is talking about specs and being excited about specs, but:

Have there been any indications whatsoever that build quality for joycon will see a significant increase?

That's what I am really interested about. Because I'm not sure I can go through another generation of Nintendo hardware with crappy input devices after all the grief the joycon - and even the pro controller - have given me in terms of durability.

There was a patent that seemingly solved the drift issues without compromising on which sticks they'd use.

This would of course presume they will stick with the current form the joy-con take, and not change it up for NG (if indeed joy-con still exist).

Yes but that's France which is Japan and Nintendo-mental and special (in a good way).
Seriously, that's interesting, I hadn't quite realised the impact of YouTube and TikTok.

MS and Sony, looking at their PS5 and X Series controllers: "Hey Nintendo, help some friends out?"

So it's "confirmed" Switch 2 is coming H1?
No, but it looks increasingly likely as the positioning of the new PlayStation and Xbox models around H2 may be in response to knowledge of another certain company's H1 intention, or H1 may be targeted by said certain company with the knowledge of H2 now being fairly booked up

Sooo… Microsoft launching a Series S refresh in October and Sony probably release a PS5 Pro/Slim/both a bit earlier or later than Microsoft is really giving packed 2H vibes. Maybe that’s why Nintendo is trying to aim for an earlier release like March-Summer? It could give them one hell of a head start next year

Xbox always releases hardware in the second half of the year, as do Sony.

I do not think this is any indication of a release timing for NG Switch.

the ps5 and XSX have drift too. It's not just a Nintendo thing
I'll make sure to keep an eye on my Xbox controller, then. I have had durability issues with first party controllers before, but never as bad as with joycon.

Nintendo suit 1: "So ... new PS and Xbox in Nov 2024, huh? What should we do about ReDraketed?"

Nintendo suit 2: "Remember how we actually made a March Switch launch work? That."

^^

Interestingly it seems Microsoft found their solution. Now it doesn't seem to be actually making the sticks drift free based, but it seems to be making them "more durable" and replaceable. I guess they are really taking "right to repair" to heart.

Can confirm, my DualSense has been in a far worse situation than the JoyCons, not to mention Nintendo has repaired my JoyCon drifting twice and for free (even shipping charges on them) while Sony was basically like "go fuck yourself lmaoo".

Ultimately my Right Dualsense Stick got completely broken and I got the revisioned model which is doing great.. So far.

While i welcome this mindset, as the world does need more "right to repair" ... i am a lazy person, and my ideal scenario would be "make it so it doesn't have to be repaired". ^^

Phil Spencer comes off as evil corp boss in that email, yeah, but just try to put yourself in his shoes for a second. OF COURSE he wants to get Nintendo! I mean can you imagine? Gamepass suddenly adds 120 classic Nintendo games to the catalog? Microsoft becomes synonymous with (destroying) gaming overnight? Suddenly their catalog appeals to the whole family in a very real way and not just dudebros? Suddenly they own Disney caliber IP? Instantaneously it's basically unanimous that Microsoft > Sony? (fight me on that last one)

It's the biggest no brainer in history.

They can't really push a release of a new system forward like that.

Remember the new Xbox and Playstation are just revisions of existing hardware. The PS4 pro sales were not that impressive, and xbox sales haven't been impressive since the 360 days. Next gen Switch hardware can easily overcome these two.

yeah we need to put in perspective a new system vs. revisions here

remember the Xbox One X launched in 2017 too and did....nothing to the Switch. Series X is actually tracking behind the One atm I think (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

Exactly.

The new xbox refresh coming this year isn't even as major as the One X. It is just more energy efficient and has more storage (and adorably all digital !!).

Neither refreshes will be big sellers.
