OK another possibility has arrived:

This summer Nintendo tweets out the announcement of a Blue Ocean / casual game (e.g. Tomadachi Life 3, 1-2 Switch sequel) for release in August or September. Then around August they do a larger showcase announcing games for the rest of the fiscal year.

  • with Switch slowing down, it makes sense they might not have enough for two more full directs this year. Those two Directs were always the two closest and a bit of a stretch to fill out at times anyway. This strategy would cover the same time frame in one direct.
  • we already know they tweet Blue Ocean stuff separately from Directs
  • leaves a lot of attention on Zelda, the mainstay which will continue to drive interest as long as people continue to make gundams on twitter, and Pikmin, the brand they have been trying to grow (Pikmin Bloom)
  • gets something on the release calendar so they are not going 3+ months without releasing a game, not waiting too long to announce games that are coming later this year, and leaves them enough time to market holiday title(s)

This would also fit with the more pessimistic mood set by some insider types (e.g. Chris Dring saying he heard Nintendo is going later in the year, Andy Robinson and Jeff Grubb personally speculating that Nintendo is not going to do anything this summer).
I'm sorry everyone.

Might be a different time, but didn't Nintendo do a twitter drop for Game Builder Garage in 2021? And later proceeded to do a June Direct (with Metroid!).

So I wouldn't say this means no direct in summer, but who knows.

That announcement tweet was so unenthusiastic lmao.

They really just want to get it out of the way. There's no chance I'm buying that game, but I'm excited to read the reviews.

The gleaming metal of Love Is Blue fills the screen, punctuated by a sharp burst. It's a gunfight! Atop the Wrecking Crew building, Bayonetta is firing on both Fox and Falco, as they leap around and fill the air with shots from their Blasters. Bayonetta dodges nimbly and fires back with all four guns. A stray bullet hits a bomb, and it explodes! The roof collapses in an instant, and the trio falls into the building below. They land in the dark, confused, and slowly aim their weapons once more. Overhead, the lights brighten, and it becomes apparent that they're on a stage of some kind. Bayonetta looks to the left, Fox and Falco to their right, at the rising curtains at the back of the stage. A silhouette obscured by fog emerges. Falco quips,

"Hey, aren't you the horse from Everybody 1-2-Switch!?"

are we sure this is EPD4?
That's like if Mario Kart was EPD3. This is EPD4, it's sequel to 1-2 Switch, not no mention that some EPD4 leads have been missing for a while, like Shikata (previously 2D Zelda) recently 1-2 Switch Director (most likely) not credited on anything ever since.

This doesn’t mean anything for a direct. It was always going to be announced outside of a direct just like all of their other games.
Yeah, this doesn't mean anything. Casual games like this aren't announced in Directs most of the time. However, if we see the Splatoon 3 DLC or Mario Kart DLC or another game announcement, we're in big trouble.

why was Golf update for Switch Sports delayed? Only because EPD4 is hard at work on finishing touches with Everybody's 1-2 Switch. I was right all along.

Man it's just so weird that there's absolutely nothing expect Pikmin in H2 right now. Definitely the most convincing evidence that there's at least some stuff planned for H2, otherwise I imagine you'd spread things out at least a bit more

and risk the holiday sales of Switch, no way Nintendo will anounce they next hardware this year, Nintendo Switch sucessor will be anounced next year for a holiday/early 2025 release
Who said anything about risking holiday sales? I expect only a few months between announcement and release.

I must admit that they will at least have something more than Pikmin and Prime 4 TBA to show at investors, I would not rule out a early July Direct, remember how they said "last week we released Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury game", how they mentioned Three Hopes in Partner Showcase and how they announced first Splatfest just week after it went on sale, in Direct. However all these examples are not really paterns that they can promote their newest release, since last September date for Direct was last possible before TGS and so on.

What if, in early July Direct they mention that "last week we released Stinky Horse game?". However, this game does not really need it at all, and it does not fit to be featured thee, not even as a mention. June Direct all the way.

So, are we thinking Yeigh or Neigh to a June Direct now?
If anything, this actually makes a summer Direct more likely. This particular game was never going to feature in a Direct, even if Nintendo had some actual confidence in its quality, but its release date reinforces the notion that Nintendo is not lacking for games to release, yet has, for some reason, completely refused to talk about any of them releasing after July so far this year.

Yeah, I don't really think this game affects any potential Direct this month.

Exactly, there has to be something there. I just have no idea what, or when they're finally going to start talking about it. But it has to be more than, say, Pokemon DLC or else they'd be saving some of these other things for later.

maybe they're just giving Pikmin 4 as much oxygen as possible
Miyamoto: "I will only do the Mario movie if you release Pikmin 4 and give it an entire half of a year to itself so that everyone is forced to buy it to have something to play"

Nintendo: ..."Fiiiiiiiine"

A thought that popped in my head: The H1/H2 distinction is completely arbitrary. I don't know why people do it. I don't think the higher ups at Nintendo think of things in that way, they probably think in terms of fiscal years and month-to-month basis.

I don’t understand this take. If they were sitting on an unannounced game, decided it’s good enough to sell AND they were planning a direct a couple weeks before the release date, they’d put that in the direct.

No June direct is coming. They’ll have Twitter drops for NSO games and Mario Kart courses, then a September direct

They’re not gonna spend two months after Pikmin having zero dated games

This is probably true to an extent (I know the fiscal year is super important), but the main reason that H2 is usually talked about, at least, is because a large chunk of it is the holiday period. An empty H1 and a packed H2 actually makes far more sense than the reverse for that reason, part of why this year is so interesting

Not this game. This game exists in the same class as Ring Fit or Labo, which are strictly non-Direct affairs. Games that are a particularly bad match for the Direct audience forgo them completely in favor of dedicated announcements.

You all need to understand that LABO, Ring Fit, Game Builder Garage, Brain Training were all Twitter Drops, as was expected with most EPD4 games, so I don't really get the doom posting with "No Directs, Twitter drops only" comments. We are getting a June Direct, chill.

The best part about EPD4 casual reveals is that Ring Fit literally got revealed just a day after September 2019 Direct, and they did not even mentioned what it is, they just said "come back next week for full reveal". Not really surprised that they put eShop page and just Tweet for Stinky Horse with no reveal trailer just yet.

if all we get is this instead of a good blue ocean game like tomodachi or ring fit I will be upset
We don't need blue ocean

We need

I know you're not talking about either game's quality, but the fact that you lump a quality gem like Ring Fit with trash like 1-2 Switch ans now this feels me with depression the size of the Atantic Ocean. Forgive me for the hyperbolic tone, but still.

1 2 Switch sequel must be a not very good quality product that they announce it this way lol.
Yeah we've known that for a while, the game is basically only notable for how bad it was doing internally

This is absolutely a "dump this and forget about it" deal

Fuck it, Direct next week, they’re REALLY ashamed of this game, it’ll go like this:

  • the announcement isn’t even at an even hour, it’s a few minutes after, letting people focus on the new controllers for a minute instead
  • no mention of when gameplay will be shown, not attracting attention to the game

So…

Direct next week, the game gets a headline, but is buried amongst the rest of the announcements. They could do Wednesday, Tuesday like E3, or even Thursday, airing the same day as SGF a la last September

I’m so disappointed I was playing Zelda and missed the official announcement of the first big(?) game ever rumored on Famiboards. Incredible stuff. I will never buy Stinky Horse, but I’m glad it’s seeing the light of day nonetheless for its history here. While certainly not the spirit of it, the way the poll in this thread was worded we all won lol.

This has no bearing on the Direct in a few weeks time. Still hyped for that!

The beautiful poetry too of 1-2 Switch’s sequel launching roughly alongside the sequel to the Breath of the Wild too lol.

Ring Fit Adventure was also announced a week or two after the September 2019 direct. Kawamoto is just built different, though he showed some mercy with the Switch Sports reveal.
