Really off topic but I just found out some jobs ask job applicants what they do for hobbies outside of work on job applications. Like wtf? Why do you care what I do outside of work? I'd leave that blank I think or throw it away and apply somewhere else if they asked that. Feel like that's asking for too much.
 
This is where I admit that one of my musical blind spots is that I know almost nothing about Bruce Springsteen or most of his music. Born in the USA, I guess I know that one? I like saxophones though!

I've never seen that question on an application form before but I have had that question come up in interviews. I think some companies really do care what you do in your free time but I think in most cases, I think the interviewer wants to see how you are in casual conversation, probably to gauge how you might act around other coworkers. But it being a question on an application form is weird.

The story I read said they passed over a job applicant for the job because they played video games in their spare time and the boomer interviewer said I don't want to have someone working in this company that goes home and plays games.

That sounds like something that’d be exaggerated for an article. Not that it’s impossible and I’m sure it has happened, but I imagine it’d be rare especially these days - and honestly if a company is so backwards and ridiculous as to have that be a reason they’d pass over someone I wouldn’t want to work there anyway.

You definitely need to target your response depending on who it is you are talking to. I generally don't talk about gamed in interviews. I found that playing sports, cooking, music, and film (but not that TV) are generally safe answers. Some interviews want to know if you are striving to become better or learn something with your free time. It's mostly BS but some interviewers want to know that you are doing something "productive or meaningful". With a lot of older people, they just see games goofing off so they don't like that as an answer.

Then again there is definitely some truth to this, too. It’s all nonsense but it can’t hurt to lean into that some. Just try to be as natural as possible and keep it fairly truthful and grounded, though.

I had a dream last night they introduced a new Overwatch character with a giant mallet that would smash you into the ground with it, and if it killed you it added +10 seconds to your respawn time. People were furious and quitting the game in protest lmao

...I kinda hate that I'm at a point with this country where I wouldn't expect people to lower flags for a mass shooting. But ya know, maybe you're right that's that's what they're doing. I should be less cynical. 😅

It can be an original by the Boss himself, or his music being covered by another artist (Bastille, Mary J Blige/Kendrick Lamar, David Bowie, The Hold Steady, Juanes, Neil Young, Eric Church, Sting, etc.), or Bruce covering another artist (The Beatles, Prince, Lorde, AC/DC, Bee Gees, etc.), or even performing with another artist (The Killers, Dropkick Murphys, Bleachers, Tom Morello, Bob Seger, Paul McCartney, The Gaslight Anthem, etc.). It can be a studio version on an official album release, a demo/outtake, a live performance, a remix. If you got a memory of this song, or the lyrics speak to you in some way (or they're goofy enough they make you laugh), or typing in your favourite artist and finding out they covered Springsteen at some point and you enjoy it, that all counts! Throw in a link to the YouTube video/Spotify where you found your performance as well so I can also enjoy it with fresh ears and put myself in your shoes!

With the month ending, a long bet comes to an end as well. Sometime last year, @mazi and I made an avatar bet. The premise was simple: will there be a new, more powerful Nintendo Switch released by March 31, 2023? I voted yes, and mazi voted no. Clearly I lost this bet lol.

I miss it when these threads reached 7k or 8k posts, but otoh I also like how we now have a ton of big active threads (and more activity overall in other threads).
