If you want the Barely Able forum history, the eshop closures sort of brought it back to mind. I joined era randomly because I saw a bunch of tweets about gaf users moving after all that drama. Was able to get in on the initial launch somehow but didn’t really contribute much. The Wii shop closure thread was the first one I really took part in. Ended up hopping into the direct threads after that. Migrated here, and the rest is history.

Feels weird to have forum nostalgia based on Nintendo closing some webshops.

I should have specified gaming forums. Was heavily into some sports forums since high school.
That doesn't make my "path" any easier, nor does it start any later than 2001. Lemme see if I can remember them all, and this is in absolutely no order other than the order in which I remember them...

RCT Station
RCT-Mart
RCT2.com (still up somehow!)
RCT Competition
RCT Lounge
vPyro
Team XBOX
GamerType
WeCraveGames
UnionVGF
NeoGAF
ResetEra
Famiboards
WiiU Forums
I was briefly a moderator on a forum dedicated to the Halo 3 Tricks crew.

Good day, everyone! I'm back from travels to my first Springsteen concert this year that prevented me from announcing the Week 4 question I have for everyone, but the wait is no more! This week, I'd like to pose this topic of discussion for you all: What are your top 5 most anticipated games coming to Switch? Why top 5 instead of top 6? We're ranking games from #2 to #6. I dunno where you think you are, but if you have a game that you're more excited for than Zelda: TotK, I would genuinely love to hear it but lord you best be ready for a dogpilin'. ANYWAYS, share a sentence or two of why you're excited for a game that's confirmed coming soon or a third party title you believe will be coming to Switch before long!

#2 - Pikmin 4
Oh man this has been a long time coming, and I can't believe that we're also getting a release less than four months away! The trailers already look gorgeous, I know the music will be sublime, and I can't wait for how gorgeous this will look when developed for an HD console from the start (and hopefully rendered at 1080p rather than P3D's 720p)

#3 - Advance Wars 1+2: Re Boot Camp
I never did pick up these games back on GBA back in the day, and while I still don't know what to expect I know that they are beloved for a reason. Hell, I could be tricked into believing that if this series can eventually crawl back from the dead, maybe there's hope for Custom Robo yet

#4 - Metroid Prime 4
Do we know nothing beyond a title card? Correct. At least there is one known constant: it will certainly come to base Switch regardless of any new potential hardware. That'd be stupid as hell to have announced it for Switch in 2017, let people buy the console in anticipation of the title, and 6-7 years later turn around and say "haha jk it's not coming to the console you bought it for"

#5 - Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life
Gamecube nostalgia is all I need to be hyped for this release; this was my first foray into the Harvest Moon Story of Seasons franchise and it's stuck with me since. Don't get me wrong, Stardew Valley is the golden child of farming sims and has earned every award it's received, but if I can be completely honest? The way AWL handles the passage of time to give you an emotional gut punch as your in-game child ages, your neighbours grow up around you, and your spouse in game turns as grey as you...tell me why was I bawling my eyes out as if I lived this grand old life when the credits rolled when I was like 14 years old. That game had no reason making me as emotional as it did. Can't wait for it to do it again.

#6 - Halo: Master Chief Collection
JUST LET ME BELIEVE, DAMMIT.

I hope y'all enjoyed these weekly questions, and though it's only a few days before we have @Josh5890 take the lead for ST19, I do have one more question in just two days time which will also have not one but two $5 eShop gift cards to raffle off 👀 (note to mods: I can do that as OP, right?). One card will be for US residents (as the code I have was won from an Era contest that when I attempted to cash it in, told me I was ineligible to redeem 🙃 Also I really hope they don't expire if not used after three years lmao), and the other will be a $5 Canadian eShop card will be because I like my fellow Canadians on this board and I can easily get one from any SDM or Best Buy or Costco or whatever. To those in South America/UK/Europe/Asia/Australia...please understand 🙇‍♂️
My most aniticipated Switch games are probably:

1: Zelda TK - even with the last reveal being those Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts looking vehicles which gives me great concern, it being so close to release and with the showcase tomorrow pushes it up to the top.

2: Master Detective Archives Rain Code - A new game from the Danganronpa Team is always going to be a high priority from me. I’m ready to solve more wild murder mysteries and a more open world to explore has me excited.

3: Pikmin 4 - Pikmin games are awesome and the new dog looks cute. It’s just far enough away to feel less tangible for me, but I actually have more full confidence in it than Zelda or Rain Code at this time lol.

4: Advance Wars Reboot Camp - I adore Advance Wars to pieces and if these were new games my hype would be through the roof at this time. These still score very high though for me since I’m really looking forward to online play with family and friends.

5: We Love Katamari - I’ve always wanted to play this game ever since I played a demo way back on the PS2. I’m really super excited for this one, I probably should rate it higher than 5 lol.

6: The Legend of Nayuta Boundless Trails - So I didn’t put Trails Into Reverie here since I’m getting and playing it on PlayStation 5 otherwise it’d be #1 over Zelda ahead of tomorrow’s showcase, but for Nayuta I am going to play it on Switch. This one is a little lower for now being undated, but it’s getting close and I’m getting excited. I never thought I’d ever be able to play this game so I’m looking forward to this cross between Trails and Ys and while it is supposed to be unconnected I have some suspicions on how it might tie into the greater epic.

Honorable mentions: Metroid Prime 4 (too intangible), Professor Layton (too far away), Momodora 5 (not announced yet), and This Way Madness Lies (only teased for Switch). Also I didn’t consider DLC, but I’m super hyped for more Xenoblade, Mario Kart, and Splatoon especially! I expect Zelda TK will have some cool DLC to look forward to too!

So what you're saying is that you're a bad omen and you're the one responsible for the shops closing.

An Unexpected Journey is a lot better than I remembered. I kinda get why they split this into 3 movies, seeing as Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth movies are more about immersing the viewer in the world rather than simply retelling the stories. I haven’t seen the other two Hobbit movies yet though.

Also the songs simply aren’t as good as the animated movie’s.
Been a long time since I saw it, but I remember thinking that Unexpected Journey was decent and had some really good individual scenes in it (Riddles in the Dark, the dwarves singing at the beginning), but was also too long and felt badly in need of more editing. And also a bit clashing in tone: The Hobbit is much more lighthearted and “storybook-y” than LOTR, and the movie gets a bit at odds with itself trying to have the big epic LOTR-ness mixed in with the cozy, goofier Hobbit vibes. And the second two movies are just all of these problems amped up to 11.

I do think they probably could have done a two-movie version that would have worked pretty well. Trim a lot of the overlong scenes, work on the tone, and condense the trilogy down into a duology. It might not have been amazing, but that alone would solve a ton of problems.

I often forget that you weren’t in the Era threads since you’re such a mainstay here now. Feels weird to think about a thread without your (excellent) shitposting!
Thankyooouu ❤️

I guess I lurked Era quite a bit, if that counts as forum history. Kinda cheated, I knew some of the in-jokes before I even joined Fami. Kinda hit the ground running 😅
cuz ya know, gotta go fast an all that

Unexpected Journey scenes are better than the sum of the parts. A lot of it can be fun, but just drags and drags a story that just wasn't meant to be dragged.

And that's something that just hits the whole Hobbit project, that clashing between the original scale of the story with the priorities of a trilogy.

Give the animated version credit for just really nailing the pacing down. It knew what to cut and what to keep. Also good songs.

I’m so glad it’s Daylight Savings because it’s on at 7 Pacific now. I was up at 6 usually but now can be post-coffee to watch these.
Tomorrow seems like a good day to “have a slightly late start, y’know, had to make a few extra phone calls and do a little phone troubleshooting before I got on the road…”

I do kinda wish we got the Del Toro version instead. I watched the extended edition though, and generally liked it. I’ll probably watch Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition tomorrow.

Happy Zelda gameplay day! I'm hoping for:

  • extended footage of Link rolling, to be followed after the presentation by a 2 hour documentary which details the intensive and deeply argumentative creative process at EPD which led to the return of rolling
  • an NPC who makes a really, really weird noise
  • a new 2D Zelda reveal because I'm just too goofy and I refuse to reconcile with reality

I'm just glad they put it at 3pm here in the UK which is my afternoon coffee break.

Buried in the article:

😅😅😅

Well, that's one of the many backfires for Sony (and to an extend the CMA and FTC who went with the same reasoning).

Rock and a hard place, either Nintendo counts and you don't need CoD, or they don't count and suddenly you find yourself in a market position that's almost a monopoly in some regions.

See kids, this is why you should always think things through.

4pm in mainland Europe, and while i'm not having a coffee break, i'm having a "i don't want to be disturbed for the next 30 minutes" strategy. ;D

Ik it’s a years old game at thsi point but replaying odyssey I can’t help but feel it needed more time in the oven. Really shoudl be had another year but I understand why they released it.

Stuff like there being 4 sub area themes and 1 song for all of them despite being from different kingdoms.

Like 5 of the kingdoms are glorified platforms

There were very clearly cut kingdoms in dev (likely a minor one between seasid and luncheon and isle delfino)

I’m still replaying it but some things are really kinda questionable (also while yoshi was a cool Easter egg and all I think it’s just missed potential to have him only be postgame)

Sorry for the spelling errors I am tired

Tbf to the CMA they didn’t use the same definition. They just used a different one with different criteria but still the same result.

Question for the folks who've been playing Ring Fit Adventure for a longer time ... is there a way to have the exercises start with different sides?

Example, i'm doing the Warrior I pose, and the exercise always starts with the instruction to lean to the left for x times before switchting to the right side.
Is there a way that i can set this to either start with the right side or ideally have it alternate between starting with left or right?

Haven't seen anything in the menus, and Google doesn't help me either.

It's especially during the story mode battles annoying if enemies are beaten before the side switch happens, it feels like one side is being worked out more than the other.

You can usually do this on your own, since the game's tracking isn't overly sophisticated

There's also an option in the settings to continue exercises after defeating enemies, which can be applied to side-switching exercises or all exercises

Thanks, that option to keep exercises with side-switching going is a solid workaround. Not really going to set that for all exercises, i'm kinda glad if i don't have to do more squats than needed. ;D

TOTK is gonna be so amazing from a sandbox perspective. The videos people will post with their ideas are gonna be a bountiful feast.
I get the feeling it's gonna screw with my choice anxiety and I'll end up barely utilizing a fraction of what the game has and just play it mostly like a "normal" Zelda but holy shit the videos are gonna be wild (not breath of the)

Personally as somebody who didn't do massive wacky experiments in Breath of the Wild but who likes to muck around, the way the new game is handling this seems much more approachable; especially when it comes to weapons. It's so rapid and the principle is so simple that it looks like it'll be easy to play with and the amount of variation - and the fact enemies can use this system too - should mean there's a lot of fun to be had even without trying too hard.

What would it take to get something like PAX in Canada?

I used to go to FanExpo in Toronto for that, but now it's just becoming a second Anime North by squeezing out gaming, sci-fi, comics and horror, and just...damn is it ever disappointing. Hell, even as someone whose interests are primarily gaming I feel bad as hell for all the horror enthusiasts who are consistently getting pushed out of it.

Most of the country thinks Seattle is basically Canada, so you can just pretend.

Yup What’s nice is fuse and ultra hand are so organic. No side mode, just a quick bit of action in the field

Yeah this is why I think it's kinda strange that people are comparing the feature to the stuff people did in BoTW

It's most likely an inspiration, sure, but that stuff was just people messing around with the physics. This is an actual game mechanic, and a pretty damn clever way to make a crafting system both more intuitive and more interesting. We just saw the basic applications of this, but things are probably going to get wild in the shrine equivalents and potentially dungeons

I think I'm more excited for Redfall than I am for TOTK which is something I never thought I would say

It's a massive expansion of "weapons break and have different properties, experiment instead of sticking to one!"
