Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

When was the last time you actually played BOTW? I think I was playing it months ago last time, even before September trailer dropped. Not that I think the overworld would not be fresh enough but I want to go as blind as possible.
About 3 years ago. I've actually been thinking about digging out my game cart to refamiliarize myself with the world so that it'll be easier for me to tell what changed (and how) and what didn't. By the end of 2017 I didn't even need the map, but it's been years at this point.

I replayed the game a ton over the years.

My problem? 3 years after launch, a new game with the same world would be fine, great.
Now, after 3, through revisiting im done with the world, its long enough that i would like to dive into another.
For a "we reuse the world for the sequel " kinda deal... it just took to long to develop for me.
(it will still be a good game. kinda annoying that i have to clarify that every post)

And if they have 0 trailers after the first one, the game would still be as anticipated, simply beause of BotW.
If there were 0 trailers people would be either seriously worried or imaging a game that never could live up to the hype. What they are currently doing is the minimal effort to keep people talking about the game. A lot of excitement comes from BOTW of course, but I don‘t see that the discussion of how similar the game looks to BOTW overshadows the general anticipation.

The thought had crossed my mind... but I think I'll resist the urge. I think TotK will hit so much better if I go in completely fresh.
That's fair, I want to try and walk the fine line between knowing whether or not something I come across is new, while still feeling a bit lost, or at least as if I don't have a map in my head, at times.

I don't think the underground will be nearly as big as a lot of people expect. Sky islands are definitely the main focus

I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding that the team is targeting the "make vehicles in BoTW" or "Minecraft" audiences with ToTK's vehicle building. Honestly, I think it's taking inspiration from those things, sure, but it's targeting everyone else

I think the idea will be trying to bring the fun that those people find in the game to a general audience thorough a simple and intuitive crafting system and well thought out challenges designed around it. Building and crafting isn't going to be the main objective of the game, but it is going to be a fairly major way to deal with those objectives. But I believe having the crafting be simple and intuitive and having well designed challenges to overcome will probably make the appeal a lot wider than people are assuming

BotW's overworld is beeeeg. While some areas did feel undercooked, there's so much interesting world design there that I haven't grown tired of the layout. I've grown tired of the contents of the layout, and they seem to be tackling that here. Jogging the player's imagination only works when the destination is unpredictable.

Also, as far as Skyrule goes, that screenshot with the friggin' floating castle towers - dayum! If Hyrule really becomes a monster infested high-level zone and most of the gameplay is either in Skyrule or in Underrule - well, I don't think Hyrule will feel that much like a drag.

would still like a siderule tyvm

I like where your head's at. 😏

So if those floating cubes are indeed the labyrinths, that kinda confirms the idea that the sky islands, or at least some of them, are chunks of Hyrule that were ripped out of the ground, which would completely change what the topography of the ground looks like.

Maybe the entire earth sorta erupted with malice like it was magma, which propelled all these islands and the castle into the air?

Which would explain malice spewing from the only active volcano around.

At the very least Zonai related places like the labyrinths and Thyplo Ruins are being modified. I also expect something to happen with Thundra Plateau and possibly even the entirety of Faron. Where else were there Zonai imagery ?

I, for one, can't wait to see all the insane contraptions players are going to come out with. I bet we've only seen the most basic "parts" so far i.e. wheels, lights, propellers, etc. and that the more (and crazier) parts are to be shown. Can't wait to take down a boss riding some mecha monstrosity.

I'm super eager to find out about more characters in the story: who the Zonai really are and what they looked like, who exactly the mysterious woman/supposed mural deity in the trailer is, if Ganondorf will become rehydrated or retain his skeletal look, if he has a sidekick like Astor was to him in AoC (despite AoC being non-canon), what the Sheikah/Yiga are up to, where some familiar faces from the Gorons, Gerudo, Rito, Zora have gone and their involvement in the fight against Ganondorf. Just the thought of this stuff makes me so hyped. (also, Bolson BETTER be alive still)

I wonder if the block-boss would appear as a floating cube island if he was all folded up

To me we are now at the exact same point in the Marketing cycle a month before the Switch reveal and the Launch trailer for BotW in January 2017. I still remember hearing and reading everyone’s concerns that there won’t be towns, are there going to NPC’s was a big one going around at the time, wheres the combat, and much more all because we simply hadn’t seen any of these things yet.

While I don’t necessarily like the Marketing of this game, probably because I’m greedy when I want more info if I’m being honest, to me it’s really not that different then it was back then. They were only showing small random snippets of story in trailers as well as just large over view scenes of the expansive world and they left it up to our imagination of what the game was going to entail.

I see the big difference now is that we have already played BotW and they don’t want to show us what’s changed on the surface to keep that mystery and wonderment we had going into BotW. So I think it’s more of them not wanting to show us more rather them having nothing to show us. Especially if this game is going to be based a lot on the players imagination on what the player wants to do and being able to tailor that into your own unique experience. How do you Market a game that is based on a players imagination other than just showing us everything in the entire game. That’s why I think all the trailers have been just tiny morsels of goodness left up to us to imagine and theorize about.

Its something that often gets overlooked with BotW, that each one of us, 28 million and counting, were able to connect with the game in our own unique ways and play the game anyway we like and still have the same outcome in the end. So I guess I’m not sure what people are expecting when it comes to them Marketing the game other than them revealing massive spoilers or showing us everything in the game. We all have our most important things on our lists we want to see in the game and I’m certain we all will get some of them, just not all of them and that’s OK.

I see some mentioning the structure of the game, but isn’t that just revealing more of the story and what we will need to be doing to complete the story. I suspect we will get one last trailer like everyone is mentioning on here, that will make it much more clear on how the story will potentially play out as well as give each one of us one or two of our top 10 hopes for the game.

Also, it's kinda hard to make out but in the shot with Link and the new arrow type, on the tree you can spot something that looks like green apple.

The trailer itself is was muddy at times. Stupid question, but is this an issue with Nintendos uploads? I’ve seen it a few times now and the sections at night all look like a mess. Night time was never ugly in Breath of the Wild.

That's funny that you said this because I was wondering how the person above caught the towers are on fire since you can barely see it in the YouTube upload. And the answer it. YOU CAN SEE IT in the Switch news section where trailer is uploaded, it's much more visible imao.

Everyone go for your Switch and watch the trailer there.

Either it's a piece of island hanging down or maybe a wind funnel, it's less foggy than the island it's right below so maybe it's just a huge pillar somewhere in the sky.

the youtube compression it not working to well with this games artstyle, and generally with dark shades (they give brighter shades a higher resolution), the game is not native res so you have some interpolation, and because of that...yeah,nintendo cant do anything against it except a raw upload somewhere else.

Thinking about it... after this game , i want the next one to be as far as possible away from Hyrule. In 3D we had:
Hyrule, Termina (yeah), The Sea above Hyrule (so hyrule), Hyrule (in edgy), Hyrule (but you are above it), Hyrule (but really big), and Hyrule (big on the y axis, not just x and z).

I would like a new place in a 3D zelda.

So Ganondorf just burned down the Sheikah Towers? I’m guessing the equivalent of them in this game would be to make your way up to a specific island floating above each region to color in the map.
It's also worth pointing out that in the shot there is a thunder so maybe that's the reason it's flaming (?) but that's huge if since the top is seemingly not on fire.

It really feels like the design ethos for this game is to just stretch the world vertically, both above and below Hyrule. Following that thought would lead to the idea that the sky world and the dark world are parallel in many ways, one of them I bet being that they're completely interconnected.

Imagine a huge network of caves that is completely interconnected and seamlessly placed throughout the game world, you can even phase through a cave roof onto the land above.

In the exemplary embodiment, the aforementioned passing-through movement allows the player character to move onto the terrain object located above the player character.

Therefore, for example, the passing-through movement allows the player character to quickly escape from an underground cave or quickly move onto a roof from the inside of a building.

Moreover, for example, when there is a cave beneath a building where the player character cannot enter because the entrance door is locked, the passing-through movement allows the player character to enter the building from the cave. Thus, the passing-through movement offers unprecedented moving methods, thereby enhancing strategic characteristics of the game.

I think there's more to it than that. We see shots of Hateno without the ancient furnace. The Divine Beasts are notably absent from their previous positions. It's as though all the old Shekiah tech is missing. My shot in the dark is that Ganon "hacks"/takes over the Shekiah tech with malice. Also explains why Zelda has a new Shekiah slate in the official art. One last interesting observation is that with the footage we've seen, all the new enemies and upgraded Bokoblins, we haven't seen a single Guardian, arguably the definitive enemy of the first game.

Can't wait when I invite bokoblins into my self made air balloon and send them to death into skies while watching from the ground how the balloon with them goes up.

They're doing themselves a disservice not showing more sky islands at nighttime. Imagine visiting an ancient temple laid against the backdrop of an aurora borealis. Nuts.

Splatoon 2 had only 1 Direct. I don't see it happening, Direct is not good match for TotK, they will not show you "oh, here is that, and there is that". One more trailer and Treehouse gameplay, that's it.

I saw this post on Reddit and I feel that's exactly what will happen with TotK marketing.

I would swap April and March around.
They could showcase the OLED and amiibos at Pax East. Treehouse right before the game launches.

Oh shit, I knew I should've gone to the news on the Switch itself and watched.

MonolithSoft's Xenoblade Chronicles X influence knows no bounds haha.

I do think that there will be so many new features and/or gimmicks, that deciding what is the "main" gimmick when the game finally releases, will differ from person to person.
All these gimmicks might be optional.
Imagine if Nintendo goes: Just like Breath of the Wild, you can go to the Castle straight up (after the tutorial/gated section) and beat Ganon.

Did a Master Mode playthrough along with Champions Ballad in July. A number of those bosses are verrrrry hard on Master Mode.

I was just talking about that today. Watching this trailer so much I have an itch to play BOTW again but I don’t want to because I want to leave as much distance as possible from my last gallop through Hyrule.

Back 2017 I did a master mode boss run from the plateau, and Thunderblight Ganon was the real obstacle. I think the biggest issue was lack of inventory space interestingly enough.

Looking at the extended footage on the Japanese website, and the more I see of these sky islands, the more excited I get. Look at that island in the upper left corner; it looks like a castle, complete with a bridge connecting towers.

And then there's this extended shot of this island cluster rising, as well as a massive tower in the far distance concealed by the atmosphere.

I'm just floored thinking of how much they're concealing from us here. These trailers probably won't ever give us a full idea of the scope this game is sitting on, simply by virtue of how we're basically tiny specs surveying a vast explorative space that can only be felt in the moment.

The sensation of closing the distance and truly, organically, feel like we're wading through the skies, has all the potential to be magnificent. Every time I think more about what the game is trying to do, I come to realize that it only continues to expand on an abstract sense of dreamy, adventuring wish fulfillment.

Yeah, I'm getting the same feeling.

Also, I think that Nintendo has been hinting at what Tears of the Kingdom actually represents this whole time:

Here is a "tear" dropping:

Here is the same "tear drop" returning to its source:

Here is another "tear" dropping:

Based on the available evidence, I think it's reasonable to consider that it is very likely the case that there is a "kingdom" in the sky, far bigger than what has been shown so far, and that the player will rewind "tear drops" to travel to the sky kingdom. We don't know the full scope or exactly how it works, but these hints are very deliberate and also pretty exciting to think about, in my opinion.
