Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

There's a 100% chance of a TotK direct happening, and looking at the history of game specific directs all but Splatoon 2 was roughly 1 month ahead of launch:

Arms
Xeno 2
Smash
Mario Maker 2
Animal Crossing
Xeno 3
Splatoon 3

Splatoon 2 had 2 of them, 2 months and 3 weeks or so ahead of launch.

Going by this, the week after Mario Movie launches would make sense - but who knows, TotK is a massive game both in importance and definitely in scope so who knows. I do think marketing ramps up post Kirby though.

I also have a galaxy brain theory that we might see a Mario direct late march - Promoting movie, add a weird june mario sport game, some NSO mario stuff and absolute a minor tease for a Mario game coming holiday 2023. But clearly, that's just me - a fan - thinking and hoping it makes sense when it's not gonna happen lol :>

Why would they have such big spirits though. Those things are like dozens of feet across

And also that doesn't really answer what they're there for, I doubt such a prominent feature is purely visual/lore focused

... I'm going to blame the dragons, for no particular reason. I just think it would be neat if the Dragons were to blame

My bad, I was talking about the little blue flames in the cave, I think the shine glyps are made by the people of hyrule to communicate with the sky people.

For those of you that love “Nintendo marketing patterns,” the timing of the two recent TotK trailers seems suspiciously similar to the two corresponding BOTW trailers as this Reddit user points out:

This definitely lends credence to the theory that we’ll get one more large trailer in 1-2 months before release.

This is very tin foil hat theory as none of these dates are random but were tied to specific events. It could be whenever they want aside from weekends.

Okay, so I've seen a couple of theories online now that the floating cubes in the trailer are the labyrinths, now airborne.

Lit if true.

I dunno why but I expected Ganondorf 's voice to be more.. I guess, Christopher Judge-y? The English one especially gives me Funimation DBZ vibes a bit.. as though it's just a dude with a normal medium -tone voice trying to force it lower to sound menacing (I call it "Chris Sabat-ing")
That's my issue with most of the voice acting - the casting & voice direction doesn't gel. The King and Deku Tree in BotW for instance were voiced by (the same?) baritone trying to sound rumbling and deep. Doesn't do it for me. ENG Zelda got a lot better though, so props!

For Japanese I can kinda forgive that because "archetypical" voice usage (The Hero, The Princess, The King, The Jester etc. all with their own traditional vocal flavour) is all over Japanese media, but for English I need something more natural.

The Italian one is spot-on because he's allowed to chew the scenery a little less and he's not "putting on" the growl as much. He's more hoarse and subdued which fits really well.

It's a fun video though - the Japanese one sounds like he fancies himself a ruler, the Italian one is obviously emotionally hurt, and the French one is just utterly unhinged.

The Italian reading is so good. The English one just sounds like a bored guy reading into a mic like he's doing a voice over for a stage show in an amusement park. The Italian actor is acting.

Oh well, as long as they keep the option to hear Japanese VA that's what I'll stick with.

First thing I'll look for when booting up the game! Not sure if we get to set the option on a first playthrough though, it might boot to the game's opening right away (something I dig in BotW, but it does mean I'll have to sit through the English opening before restarting because that's the default voices for a Dutch Switch - we don't have our own voices which is alright with me, considering how the same 5 people get all voice-over gigs in NL =P).

Looking at the extended footage on the Japanese website, and the more I see of these sky islands, the more excited I get. Look at that island in the upper left corner; it looks like a castle, complete with a bridge connecting towers.

fmdPd0N.png

And then there's this extended shot of this island cluster rising, as well as a massive tower in the far distance concealed by the atmosphere.

g8I4RGF.png

I'm just floored thinking of how much they're concealing from us here. These trailers probably won't ever give us a full idea of the scope this game is sitting on, simply by virtue of how we're basically tiny specs surveying a vast explorative space that can only be felt in the moment.

The sensation of closing the distance and truly, organically, feel like we're wading through the skies, has all the potential to be magnificent. Every time I think more about what the game is trying to do, I come to realize that it only continues to expand on an abstract sense of dreamy, adventuring wish fulfillment.

with usual Nintendo marketing I expect nothing next month then Story trailer, Introduction Trailer, Trailer 3 in last 2 month

The more I see of the sky the more I pray that it takes up like 80% of the gameplay

Yeah, I feel like skylands will be the BOTW's "you can see that mountain up there? you can go there". Now it's "oh, that skyland above, I want to go there".

Maybe the ground is super dangerous and deadly, with tons of high level enemies and malice and stuff, and you spend most of your time in the sky out of necessity. So those Nazca lines are kinda landmarks for places on the ground you can see very well from the sky since you won't be able to easily traverse the ground on foot (or wheel).

Maybe Link starts on the moon like Ganondorf's minions. Maybe everyone in Hyrule is immortal and respawns on the moon when killed, so you need to skydive from the moon every time you die.

I'm so freaking eager to explore this expanded world of Hyrule. This cluster of islands in particular. The curve shaped one has my interest.

I know the initial load in is gonna be long for this game. The fact that you can do all that sky to ground stuff without any visible load times is pretty crazy. I need this game asap!

I'm sure there will be some masked loading/streaming times when you're ascending/descending through the clouds.

Splatoon 2 had only 1 Direct. I don't see it happening, Direct is not good match for TotK, they will not show you "oh, here is that, and there is that". One more trailer and Treehouse gameplay, that's it.

I saw this post on Reddit and I feel that's exactly what will happen with TotK marketing.

Yeah I couldn't believe some of the crazy Sky Islands! (/s)

Splatoon 2 had only 1 Direct. I don't see it happening, Direct is not good match for TotK, they will not show you "oh, here is that, and there is that". One more trailer and Treehouse gameplay, that's it.

Splatoon 2 was featured in the Arms direct, even if it was basically a single player trailer tapped on to the arms direct.

I'm pretty sure there's going to be a direct, One more trailer and treehouse gameplay is pretty much is that no?
They're never going to showcase everything but they dont need to even if this thread screams for it, and it could still fit a direct format. They've made Mario movie directs and a Super NIntendo direct for crying out lol :p

Trailer
showcasing some stuff
Possibly hardware
I do agree there's going to be an attached treehouse though.

And that's a direct right there

But that's not how Direct format works, am sorry that am quoting post from this person again but it's just perfect. Not sure what the Direct would be about even if narrator/Aonuma talked about stuff it would be weird, showing gameplay is much more fitting. Can't imagine them repeating all the Link's powers in the Direct-like format and then showing what you can do with it or "These are sky-islands, they look like this and you can do this". "This is Hyrule, this has changed here".

I firmly believe that ToTK will not have a Direct on its own. It's not the type of game that you want to know every tiny detail before buying it, unlike others like Splatoon 2/3, Xenoblade 2/3, Animal Crossing, Mario Maker or Super Smash Bros. If you pay attention, you'll see that the majority of dedicated Directs are about games mainly focused on multiplayer or without a traditional campaign, the only exception being Xenoblade due to the complexity of its sistems.

Nintendo doesn't decide if a game deserves a Direct looking at its importance or scope. Look at games like Mario Oddysey, Luigi's Mansion 3, Metroid Dread, Paper Mario TOK, Bayonetta 3...They clearly weren't any less important than Xenoblade 2 and 3.

The most probably scenario is a full trailer + a Treehouse playing a demo of the early game like what happened with BoTW in E3 2016. But dedicating an entire presentation to the game?I don't see that at all.

I went back and looked at botw trailers. In the second one, life in the ruins, there is a tapestry animation where the sheikah eye shed a tears on the ground and trees grow.

I know there was a lot of joking with farming but maybe we'll use the tears to restore the landscape and nature on the ground.

We are exactly three months away. And February is a short month! Sadly March has that completely useless 31st day.

I’m on Team No Direct. I can’t see them breaking down each little feature like Nintendo normally does in game focused Directs. We will get some Twitter drops, at least one more trailer, and maybe some previews before launch.

Also I still can’t believe the Zonai may actually be important. Tin foil hat money well spent.

It's also worth noting that roughly month before BOTW launched the japanese ads started popping up that showed new footage, this happens with other Nintendo games too and it will happen again. Here are just a few examples what new footage was shared back then:

"Did they all send a shiver down your spine?"

Um.. only the Italian one, really.

So why wasn’t the German Version included? Because the German Version is for me the Best one!

I'm sure there will be some masked loading/streaming times when you're ascending/descending through the clouds.
Yeah, max traversal speed and distance between islands is probably optimised for Switch's streaming speed. With the way BotW worked, it seems shrines and Divine Beasts were separate scenes because of the way the game was developed, not because of technical constraints. I'm sure they've tried to eliminate the final loading times for TotK, and with the islands at least those are separate enough to enable different teams to work on their own segments if needed.

English: Nickelodeon villain.
Spanish: Evil general.
French: Unhinged psychopath.
Italian: Disappointed principal.
Japanese: Deluded ruler.
German: Hoarse preacher.

Italian Tired, Hurt & In Control Ganondorf is my daddy. Sounds most like a human and less like a comedy skit villain.

Sounds like it could be.

The spanish voice (spain version) of Ganondorf is the Solid Snake voice. So weird for me

That's an interesting idea. Let's say there's 7 dungeon-thingy in the sky, at the end of which a tear is released and falls down, changing the surface. One for each region. Could be cool.

Monster Maze's video is short and sweet. Seems like the spirals are everywhere, but have to be activated.

Could be the player's looking for fallen debris, sending that upward along with themselves to do some skyland sleuthing, after which the spiral appears on the surface as a "hook" to sling you back up when needed.

Also, Time Travel Shmime Shmavel, buuuuut the Great Plateau looks very different at points - and we all know what Temple is situated there.
I read that as horse preacher and wondered if that was a real term in German for a minute.

Sounds like it could be.
That's the canceled 1-2 Switch sequel right?

There's been several different direct formats by now, I dont see why there couldnt be another one. The way you describe a direct, that's not at all how I would imagine a Zelda direct would be, because that's not how all directs have been - but clearly we have different opinions about that.

We do agree however that it's a game that does not need to showcase everything before launch. My point isthey dont have to reveal everything even if they call their marketing event a direct.

Direct is a much stronger marketing brand than tree house, which is why I think they're going with with a Tears of the Kingdom direct followed by a tree house presentation.

But in the end, I dont really care - I would almost like to go in blind as of right now, now that's not gonna happen because marketing will ramp up in some way and I am too weak not to eat up all trailers and gameplay I can get.

Okay, so I've seen a couple of theories online now that the floating cubes in the trailer are the labyrinths, now airborne.

Aren’t we going to destroy the blood moon
I like our chances of destroying the blood moon now that we have our very own Borg space ship!
Borg-Cube-Main.jpg

Ok maybe we don’t go to this extreme but change the aesthetic to zonia and it makes you wonder what the heck we will be doing with these cubes,
There are so many cool things they could do with these cube mazes. Monster maze pointed out that they are much larger then we got to originally explore.
My imagination thinks since we found so many guardians in the basement level we could explore in the northern labyrinth, that the Sheikah used their knowledge and combined it with Zonai tech and used the cubes as factories to build all the guardians and Devine beasts. At some point in the game I would love to come across an old ruined or abandoned factory and see all the different stages of production of how these things were made.

Considering we saw Link rotating one of the islands, It looks like if you rotate the curve island 90 degrees upward it would connect nicely with the one in the middle Like a bridge or even a staircase as it looks tapered at the end. The middle one has a small extended path so that could be rotated as well. I wasn’t sure about all the theories going around before this trailer about rebuilding the sky islands with pieces that have been falling to the ground but it seems more likely now they will be a giant jigsaw puzzle to be put back together.

I just realised we haven't seen any sign of potential underwater exploration or at least diving, have we? I guess it's just the sky, land, and mostly likely underground/cave then, which already sounds good enough for me 🤔

Yeah, I kind of want some kind of animal as a water mount, but we might be getting some small Zonai boat instead, like the small ship we use in SS.

No and no. I don’t want to see any more of this game and I can’t resist the temptation, so I hope we’re basically done with the marketing other than the mandatory launch trailer and maaaaaaaaaybe a short gameplay segment
I get where you're coming from, but I have a feeling we will get at least another epic trailer to finally convince those who still have doubts about the game. I know most of us here are already sold, but I still want to see glimpses of new towns and characters.

Oh yeah, there have to be craftable boats and ships. Wonder why they weren't shown along the cars and aircraft during the last direct.

We’re going to build boats and submarines too.

The end game we will build a spaceship which will lead to the conclusion in this trilogy.

So I’m guessing that you can rush to the final boss but this time it’s a castle in the sky?

Which means you have to built something and dodge what ever is coming your way?

Or will this game actually has some restrictions instead of being almost 100% open.

Yeah, why do they so often have people with a mid level male voice try to sound deep and tough. it just makes the whole thing sound like a saturday morning cartoon villain. Thats why i like the italian the most, then probably the german or spanish. then japanese (man, that one just is so...typical. cant really criticise it, its just so generic anime evil guy).
I really think that it is a cultural thing and the people casting the voiced think people expect that kind of voice?

No. nono. nononononono. God no.
I'm sure there will be some masked loading/streaming times when you're ascending/descending through the clouds.
im confident that we can already kinda see the transition in the trailer, where it fades between the "background render" for hyrule and the interactive part. Last trailer 1:22, it could just be the rendering, but i feel like its also a seamless Background swap.

I think it'll maintain the "boss rush from the start" yeah. That was something they were really proud of in BOTW.

People need to accept now that this game is going after the Minecraft-esque self-directed experience even moreso than BotW. It's not going to be Elden Ring and it's not going to just be BotW mixed with old Zelda.

This game is going after the people that want to experiment a lot and the people that want to enjoy directed content just like BotW. Not sure what is different here.
