it's launching on everything simultaneously. i guess we've had something like apex legends that was shadow dropped on multiple platforms, so it's not exactly impossible.

That will probably explain why it took so long to release as they want to launch everything simultaneously. I remember it took them quite a while to port to the Switch as they handled it themselves and made sure everything was perfect.

The worst part is that there is virtually no chance that the game will live up to my expectations. I‘m sure some of you will suggest I get a life/touch grass/etc. But Hollow Knight makes me so happy that I don’t really want to. (EDIT: I should also mention that I have a wife and three kids who are perfectly fine with my obsession. If anything, they share it and encourage it)

Okay that is enough of my sob story for now. Has anyone else ever had this experience before with any game franchises? How did you deal with it?

this has been me waiting for ToTk. I think about it, watch theory videos, talk about it pretty much everyday. Im younger than 40 so its even more of a percentage of my life lol

like a lot of the data is the same, but someone seems to have touched the entry — maybe just to shift from 2022 nebulous coming soon to 2023 nebulous coming soon

but I hadn’t seen that before. maybe the CDN folder for the hero image updated? so it could be a path or key to something like that

Team Cherry’s priorities, as far as I can tell, are:
  • heavy polish, significant bugs cleared
  • simultaneous release
  • H1 release window barring any major issues — Leth likely advised Q1 if possible, but polish + coordination is more important to them
My assumptions (less demonstrably true):
  • TC don’t want to release near Tears of the Kingdom
  • TC love the poetry of a potential February release or release announcement, but won’t force it
  • TC will move swiftly and with confidence — my bet is two weeks from release date announcement to release
Other informed speculation:
  • they just rounded a corner last week — something shifted tonally that makes me think they just finalized some part of the release plan
  • no physical at launch — but if there is, brace for April or later
  • if the game is releasing in Korea at all, it’s not yet rated — Korean applications are separate from IARC
  • simultaneous release means all review processes for each company must be cleared before launch
Marketing thoughts:
  • release date in a Nintendo Direct would be valuable to them, but not necessary
  • XBOX and PS last year were very strategic — getting in front of audiences they hadn’t specifically marketed to yet
  • this also means, in Cherry Time, that they likely don’t feel the need to make another big splash for those two
  • if they could coordinate with a Direct, I could see it happening — completing the loop, when it’s one of the first places they showed, especially after years of console sales
  • but — they could just as easily skip it since they technically “already showcased with Nintendo”
Where does this all leave us?
  • February — possible, and they’d be delighted, probably too soon for release. announcement likely, release somewhat unlikely but possible.
  • March — a nice cozy release pocket, gives them a bit of space on either side. release probable.
  • April — would complete a years-old mossbag joke. less likely but also incredible.
  • May — if this happens I don’t think they wanted it to.
  • June — more likely than May, actually, and maybe even April
  • post-June — entirely possible, but things have gone wrong.
so if we do the bullshit math on my made-up facts, we get:

I'm still questioning whether they would want to repeat what they did with HK and announce a release date 2 weeks before that.
I don't know how much pressure they receive from Xbox or PS or Nintendo (My guess is not that much with how little news we get and with how long development is going), but I still want to believe they will announce a release date a month away at minimum.

But who knows.
 
not really big news but xbox again has featured the game among the 2023 lineup for gamepass

yeah, for sure. it’s definitely one of the parts I feel the least convinced about, but I’d truly be surprised if it shadowdropped

it could always be a month or two post-announcement, but — based on absolutely nothing other than vibe — I feel like they’d prefer a shorter window

hm... i'm not sure. i think we can handle having everything in one thread with people marking spoilers for the first few months. if that doesn't work we can then open a spoiler thread.

Yeah I think that sounds good. I might avoid the thread for a week or two just in case, but we’ll see. Gonna be tough not to discuss the game while I’m playing through it.

i hope you still come and post in the ST while playing the game! everyone talking and sharing their experiences in the OT on resetera after the game's surprise launch on switch was pretty amazing.
 
I'm really looking forward to discussing lore theories while we play through the game, doing it with the original game when it came out was real fun ^^
 
I'm gonna be honest. I truly believe we'll see it tomorrow. I think it's finally time. I'm going to be unreasonably upset if we don't!
 
Honestly, did not expect to get a blowout of TotK and Silksong at the same time. But the chances are high. weird.
 
I dont expect Hollow Knight to show up in a direct tomorrow but would be over the moon if I am wrong. This is the only game I have bought a collector edition of and purchased on every single platform I own.

I’m saying release date announcement but shadowdrop would be sick as hell

I’m NOT ASSUMING IT’LL BE THERE. But I also think it’s more likely than it’s ever been!

and if it is there, I will be cackling about being in the Daily Silksong News video right before it dropped forever
 
Has MS updated thier gamepass list for the month after a Switch Shadow drop of a game that is also going on Gamepass? If so, I can see a Shadowdrop happening.

At any rate, if it aligns with TC's schedule, i feel like they have good data on the impacts of shadowdropping thier game and would do it again if they can.

it’s also good to know that if it ISN’T THERE, the world isn’t over. the smoke is still billowing; we’re gonna be able to play this game truly soon.
 
yeah I think there’s a moderate possibility of a surprise release but I think a release date confirmation for within the next month or two is a bit more likely (and preferable with my current schedule lol….the week of the 27th would be perfect)

Probably just a release date. I don't think TC wants the game to shadowdrop really(? but If they do it I'd be over the MOON

I might actually be the biggest Hollow Knight fan in the world, but I still say I would actually prefer at least two weeks notice before SS comes out. I need some time to emotionally prepare myself for the release. A shadow drop might actually kill me lol
