I'll report on wether or not posting in the October ST in November makes one feel like an outlaw. Check back in a little over 6 hours.

In grad school, I met this PhD student from Pakistan and he was telling me about how he had a phone call with someone in a different US time zone. He seemed so amazed that a country could be so large that people in that same country could be 2 or 3 time zones apart.

Ok who do I gotta call to take on that job cause it is surely better than my current one xD
I dunno, going down millions of chimneys in one night and wrestling with the ethics of elf slavery sounds pretty demanding.

Oh, I know. But if they can’t make any new games in these series that will recoup their cost without changing what they’re about maybe they should just… not do them. Or just eat the loss.
My vote goes to eating the loss. A smaller company might not be able to take that hit, but for Nintendo it's not even just creating a game for the sole purpose of said game existing; it's building and maintaining a brand that sells the company's hardware and brings people into the ecosystem. Of course, even for a company like Nintendo, the analysis of whether a particular cost is worth eating is still relevant.
But there is also another element to keep in mind.
I am a selfish Overlord, and I want these games to exist (I also pretend to be reasonable, and, as such, try not to state objectively bad ideas as objectively good)

Uprising basically takes some of the gameplay elements of the original (shooting, getting upgrades and finding secrets) and puts its own spin on it. In its transition to 3D it lost the platforming which I know some people missed.
That sounds reasonable enough. That's taking a few core but rather broad concepts, which is essentially what one might have to extrapolate from when going back to games so old, and saying if they're incorporated somehow it still works. Shooting, getting upgrades, finding secrets, could all be brought forward in different ways that allow a new game to put a different spin on it and carve its own identity; a new take might even be able to add the platforming back in.

This reminds me when I constructed a list of elements of what defines Metroid (back with the announcement of Federation Force, I believe -- it was at least partially an exercise in determining why certain takes on the franchise don't work), and I determined that a certain percentage could be twisted or ignored in a particular game, allowing further experimentation, as long as a significant portion were still present in some form.

It's the same overall concept. There's some element of core experience to a particular game or series or franchise, but you can still find ways to experiment with that and perhaps even make very different experiences, so long as you have in mind what that core is and you respect it.

I haven't been very active here lately, just been busy with work and Halloween festivities (and seeing Dune 3 times oops), but I hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend and is excited for ST2, SMT V, Pokemon, and TGA in the rest of 2021 :)

I just started thinking it...

What Nintendo will show on the Game Awards this year (if anything) since Smash is now out of the way? Think we'll see another Bayo 3 trailer? Their options for already announced games are not that big, considering the audience..

No, I don't think they'll pull the Zelda card...
There's nothing that has to be there so I look forward to being surprised
Lol Ubisoft is failing on Switch while others banking millions. What are you doing mate. If you don't have anything right now, just port some old ass games to Switch, even with PS2 Remasters like Rayman 3 you can make some serious money. Are you THAT incompetent?

FC9ZrO3XoAIFtOm
a handful of extra ports aren't going to move the needle significantly in favor of the Switch share when almost all of Ubisoft's new software are simply not meant for Switch

A bunch of kids just knocked on my door, for trick or treat, dressed up as triangles from Squid Game. That was actually kinda creepy so I didn’t dare the trick, gave them candy instead!

That's a cool idea!

Side note: Do people actually ever say/do "trick" for trick or treat? I know it's right there in the name, but I've literally never heard of it. Trick or Treat for me growing up was always just saying the phrase, and then being given candy, and moving to the next house.

There was one house in my neighborhood that shot silly string at kids that said trick, but they still got candy anyway. Other than that I never really saw any "tricks".

I have no idea, never happened to me even those times I didn’t have any candy to give out.

There's triangles in Squid Game? 10/10, without having watched it.

Sometimes people in the same state are a timezone apart!

Just wrapped up my fourth and final challenge in the Halloween badge challenge thread — I actually had a lot of fun doing them!

Looking forward to more shenanigans like this in the future.

Happy Halloween, everybody! Hope everyone has a fun and spooky and candy-filled day, and whatever else you'd like to throw in. I'm gonna kick back and play some AoC DLC and try and finish off Eastward! Also beat Death Stranding Directors Cut this morning so that was cool.

So with the holiday season officially kicking off, I think it would be a good idea to have an ST for sales, deals, etc. Is anyone making that? I would volunteer but if I'm perfectly honest, it would never get updated if I did it.

According to my careful and very thorough research based on american movies and TV shows, the answer is "yes" and the trick is always throwing eggs and an unglodly amount of toilet paper, which no one can tell where these things were before needed to "trick" the house.

You resemble that remark huh? Does that mean you're one of the five people?
I am! Denver CO represent! We have a FEW more than five people though, but I admit that outside of the city and a few nearby cities the populous areas go down FAST. Eastern CO is basically Kansas, i.e. a whole lot of flat nothing

It won't move the needle on Switch sales, but Ubisoft should port "Beyond Good & Evil" to Switch.

Heck, release the old Splinter Cell games on there. I'm sure there's an audience on Switch that would love to play those.
One of the most baffling omissions on Switch is undoubtedly the Tom Clancy series. Since the day the series first began Tom Clancy games have been on EVERY Nintendo platform, more than one instance: N64, GBC, GCN, GBA, DS, Wii, Wii U, 3DS. Ubisoft's failure to bring the series to Switch needs a proper explanation, but I'll doubt we'll get any. No decision they make nowadays make sense.

And yes, even simple stuff like BG&E and Rayman 3 ports might be enough to increase that super low percentage on that table. Never doubt the Switch owners unsatisfiable hunger for more games!

You'll never know. 2019 they had two Assassin's Creed ports and Switch percentage was way higher than that. Switch owners are more likely to buy re-releases like those. Playing Far Cry 3-4 on the go is a big deal.

And there's another thing: None of the Ubisoft's software scalable for Switch. That's stupid as hell. Something like Avatar is next gen only, they might have forgot that the Wii version of the first Avatar game was the best seller. Someone needs to tell them there are not much difference between PS4 and Switch audience. Both love video games.

I think a big reason why third party devs, particularly with companies like Ubisoft, don't support the Switch as much is because the audience hasn't yet been conditioned to pay a lot of money in post-launch DLC and microtransactions. Ubisoft makes a lot of money off Rainbow Six and Ass Creed micros. Like they would make money off ports certainly but continuous in-game purchases is where a lot of devs see dollar signs. Just look how they are attempting to turn Ghost Recon into a battle royale despite the series getting a ton of sales when it was a single player open world game. Then there's Ass Creed Infinite or whatever the hell they are gonna call it.

Ok looking for a racing game and I need some assistance. Burnout Paradise remastered vs NFS Hot Pursuit remastered?
This mainly depends on two questions:

  • Do you prefer open world racers or a more traditional style "select a race from a list" racer? If you prefer open-world, go for Burnout. If not, Need for Speed.
  • Do you plan on playing with friends? Burnout's single-player campaign is so-so in my opinion, but the game really shines in multiplayer. Need for Speed has a much better single-player mode, and is still pretty fun in multiplayer, especially the asynchronous Autolog function.
Personally, I'd go with Hot Pursuit Remastered, but that's my personal preference.

That makes sense but I think their policy on Switch is much simpler than that: They just moved on. One of the recent trends in the industry is big publishers giving their studios as much freedom as they like (hence Immortals existing). Ubisoft is also doing this and as expected the studios avoid Switch for more comfort in developing. Something like Riders Republic has the potential to sell on Switch as much as it would on PS5 but the dev team pick the route that gives them ease of development. The rest is up to marketing department.

AoC and a kit for me

I finally started Disco Elysium to get my RPG fix without being too combat-focused before SMTV. And it is a TRIP. So far, my detective solved the quest for his missing left shoe (which yes was a quest), disappointed his cop partner by acting like an idiot, and then got yelled at by some vulgar kids so hard that he lost his will to continue being a policeman and I lost the game. All in the first hour!

Gotta decide which of these to play next:

  • Disco Elysium
  • Eastward
  • No More Heroes III
  • Dragon Quest XIS
Actually got way more stuff in the log, but these are the ones I’d like to clear first.

I know I'd buy Rayman 3 HD-for the 3rd time. What can I say, it's one of my favorite games!

Enjoy! Disco Elysium is fantastic. I wasn't totally sold on the no combat before I played it but the writing, humour and roleplaying potential easily make it one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

This fangame is pretty rough (no idea about its current state) but it shows an alternate take on the IP in 3D which I also find interesting and perhaps even more faithful than Uprising. Just shows how many different ways you can go with an IP while still keeping its spirit intact, especially when going from 2D to 3D.

I always thought "trick or treat" meant "give us candy or we'll play a trick on you."

Let's be honest here, the real reason we switched to monthly threads was so Team January could have a thread named after them, isn't it?
And then as usually happens, the #TeamJanuary thread will come and go with mounds of speculation, but the real winner will ultimately end up being the February thread OP :p.
I always thought "trick or treat" meant "give us candy or we'll play a trick on you."
That is probably what it meant originally, it's just one of those phrases that I've never really thought about the actual meaning much

'Tried' the Guardians of the Galaxy demo.

Once up and running I tried to do some quick turns etc etc to see how the performance was - which was ok. But I thought it looked kinda weird, both a bit blurry and sharp at the same time so I wasnt sure if there was a setting or something I might have missed when I started the game so I quit and rebooted to see if I could opt for a quality or performance mode which other cloud games has had. Got a black screen and rebooted the game again.

Now the game now decided that I had tried the game enough and I wasnt allowed to try it any more :p Too bad because I've heard good things about it and wanted to try it out at least.

I appreciate that there's demos for the cloud games but man, they're so weird. Why do these demos work like they do and not like most others do demos? Is there a specific reason to why?

Also - this game is the most expensive one I've seen on the e-shop (not counting games with season passes etc)

739 SEK ~ a whopping 86$ That's crazy

At least I can laugh at the nonsensical ramblings of the quartering, Bitblock is just sad and....creepy.
I just got caught up on what Josh has been up to over the last 5-10 years about a week ago. He was never too nice to people in the comments on GoNintendo back in the “WiiFolder” days, but dang, that’s nothing compared to where his path went from there.

If a deer comes right up to you that means you're a Disney princess obviously but what if it comes right up to you on Halloween?
That is so cool! My gramma feeds apples to the deer that come visit her yard. They now look in the windows when they want more and come running toward us when we start throwing out new ones.

Doesn't help that legitimate issues were drowned out by hyperbole and in some cases outright fake information (e.g. the Ocarina crashes). I'm all for Nintendo improving the N64 emulation and the broader online offering, sure, but rampant, hyperactive negativity won't achieve anything in the long run other than continuing to poison gaming discourse.
Well said.
