I intend to play that this year.

There’s no way it’s that bad, right?
I didn't actually play it until... 2016, I think? Years after its release.

I went in expecting the worst, and boy, did I get it. Game sucked pretty bad. I'd be happy to discuss it with you soon, especially after my own replay.

When will the elusive GMB NSO launch?

I hope they sprinkle in GCN for a little razzle dazzle too.

The gameplay is serviceable with some bad ideas dragging it down. It’s definitely a bad Metroid game, story and gameplay. If you are determined to play it, at least do the good after the credits thing.

Today is the last chance for a Nintendo Direct before Engage.
At this point I don’t expect it, but I would love to be surprised

I feel like it's already been too long a dev cycle for 3D Mario and they're just waiting for the right time to drop one, like with Mario Kart. If they launch in Q1 Metroid Prime 4 would be a big title to push to the hardcore audience who buys it day one and 3D Mario would serve as that for a more general audience going into the holiday season
Hmmmm not really...

Super Mario Odyssey took four years of development (the same amount of time that BotW took). Tears of the Kingdom is coming 6 years and 2 months after BotW. Just going by this we'd have 3D Mario by late 2023 or early 2024. BUT, that doesn't mean either had 6 years of development (BotW only started development January 2013, despite Skyward Sword being released late 2011).

Apparently Tears of the Kingdom had a hiring call early-mid 2018, with big hiring calls/Monolith hiring in 2019 around E3 announcement. 3D Action game by EPD Tokyo had hiring calls late 2019. That doesn't mean it wasn't already in development with a smaller team, probably since 2018 like TotK even.

Then COVID happened, they moved to a new building, apparently they're moving from their own engine to LunchPak, and Switch games taking longer than ever to make. That alone would have made the patterns/easy guess(at the time) of a late 2021 release impossible even if development started right after Odyssey finished.

Add in a possible change in scope(I guess TotK had one too, maybe when announced it was supposed to be way more iterative and the scope highly increased to a thing bigger than the original), maybe they've gone from a Galaxy-esque sequel to a totally new kind of 3D Mario, etc.

Some dev cycles to compare:
  • Metroid Dread: 4 years;
  • Tears of the Kingdom: at least 5 years, can be even more;
  • Splatoon 3: 4 years maybe? But it came out more than 5 years after 2, while 2 came out 2 years and 2 months after 1;
  • Mario + Rabbits: Sparks of Hope: does anybody know? What we know is that it came out 5 years after Kingdom Battle, I'm pretty sure it took longer to make(IIRC from interviews we know M+R:KB started ~2014?)
  • Metroid Prime 4: ...

There's those possibilities for the next 3D Mario:
  • Only started full development early-mid 2019, right before those hiring calls came;
  • Something started development right after Odyssey and got canned in 2019(turned into Bowser's Fury), development of the current game started in 2019;
  • The team took late 2017-early 2019 to prototyping and pre-production, full development started by then;
  • Full development began late 2018(Zelda began early 2018), meaning it's probably coming late 2023-early 2024;
  • A long ass development cycle actually happened, late 2017-late 2023. Unheard of, but development times just keep getting longer, apparently Metroid Prime 4 will have it when all is said and done, if you believe TotK started development early 2017 it's happening with Zelda, so...

With the sole exception of the last possibility, which could've brought something by late 2021-early 2022(like I imagine Zelda would be before COVID and change in scope), it's perfectly normal considering both COVID delaying things and games of that caliber taking longer than ever to make.

I think Miyamoto spelled out the direction of backwards compatibility and cross-gen titles pretty well here:

IMG_3334.png

I’m of the belief that the majority of new titles released after the new hardware will be exclusive to it, even within the first year. The next 3D Mario and Mario Kart for certain; and of course all the other major IPs like Animal Crossing, Smash, Zelda and Splatoon as they cycle in. If it launches after the new hardware, Prime 4 will be one major exception; the next Pokémon game (whatever form of remake / reimagining it takes) is another I can see as cross-gen based on Game Freak’s history; but I imagine the majority of cross-gen experiences would be ports, remasters or casual games with no real benefit in being exclusive. Any remaining Wii U ports like Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World Deluxe or Xenoblade X Definitive Edition; the next Mario Party or even Tomodachi Collection; those types of projects. Not too disimilar from the lineup of post-Switch 3DS games.
I don't think that particular Miyamoto quote is particularly revealing. It's really just a "of course there'll also be exclusive content" assurance tacked on to the end about a question that's mostly about backwards compatibility.

Nintendo puts out a lot of games, and I don't think they'll get through even just their whole backlog of Switch focused titles super quickly.

I don’t care about what “vibe” it emits. I think I prefer traditional 3D Mario (Sunshine, 64) in that sense too.

But I absolutely want the next game to take some gameplay cues from BF. I think it’s a wonderful template as it provides the best possible combo of open worldbuilding with potentially very solid platforming. The latter of which I think Odyssey really lacked
I have a few possible paths the next Mario can take:
  • Odyssey, but bigger(a handful of open zones that feel like actual open world, like Sonic Frontiers and Pokémon Legends Arceus) - think every kingdom is the Tostarena in size and New Donk City in places to go and things to discover;
  • Full open world - can work, they can make Bowser's Fury bigger and already all open, maybe with a system ala towers in BotW to go to new places;
  • Full open world HUB WORLD, that is a place where you can talk to NPCs, make discoveries and from them you can either go to galaxies, enter paintings or go to ares of the world that feel like traditional platforming Mario, like Galaxy or 3D World;
  • Something that's right in between, buy bigger than ever before - go nuts, like, being a new Galaxy game but with the amount of levels of SMW, big hub worlds and great platforming;
  • something narrative based, the game being chapter based, having voice acting for other characters, mysteries to solve, hours and hours of fun

I agree. The up until now Switch exclusives getting patches that add 4K support with maybe ray tracing and revamped textures to spice things up will be a big selling point of the next Switch already.
I mean, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has new content but visual wise it's just a bump to 1080p and that sold like we never seen anything before it selling.
I think people underestimate how big of a deal the "the new 3D Mario game coming at the launch of the Switch 2 for the Nintendo Switch family of systems will benefit of 4K resolution and improved visuals" and "play The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom now in 4K/or at 60FPS", or even "play all those Nintendo Switch classics in 4K(announcement of patches that add DLSS support for SSBU, MK8DX, Splatoon 3, BotW, ACNH) are going to be.
Arguably God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West were PS5 system sellers despite also coming to PS4 - and those are among the best looking games of the gen, just like BotW and MK8DX are among the best looking Switch games despite being originally Wii U games.

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion, but tbh I'd really like to see a Mario game that's basically a bunch of levels like the bonus platforming rooms in Odyssey.

Not necessarily related to an upcoming Direct, but shouldn't Xenoblade 3's third DLC be dropping sometime soon? I always thought the roadmap said december but i guess i was wrong here.

Super Metroid has a dedicated button for running and later the Speed Booster. It's okay, i too, always forget that when i replay it after a couple of years. ;D

You’ll like a little game called “Super Mario 3D Land”, then

Jokes aside, can’t say i’m a huge fan of those segments. I thought Odyssey lacked a lot in the core platforming aspect and the relative easiness of those bonus levels didn’t really help for me. Would much rather have bonus levels more similar to 3D World, which, while not difficult, took me more brain and reflex power than what challenges Odyssey offered.

Yeah, I played 3D Land, although I think just cause I like console games more I liked 3D World more.

Tbh, I don’t remember how difficult the rooms were in Oddysey. I was more meaning just the theme of having these platforming based levels, also maybe with the aesthetic of Odyssey’s levels cause I like that kind of abstract, space-like vibe.

In terms of the difficulty, I agree, I’d like a higher difficulty too, or at least the option for it.

I think the roadmap was:

Wave 1 at launch
Wave 2 by end of December 2022 but we ended up getting it in October
Wave 3 by end of April 2023
Wave 4 by end of 2023

That said, I’m expecting wave 3 to be February. Could be a shadow drop following its announcement in a potential Feb Direct I guess.

Dunno why but I thought the 3rd DLC was coming in April.

Ah, that's why i had december in my mind! Thanks.

What are the chances that Kirby, in some form, is in the next direct? Especially with the Dream Land DX release nearby, I would give it a really high chance. Maybe just a mention of Dream Land or even another eshop game.

If I've learned anything from watching these things, it's that Kirby is inevitable.

With Kirby news the dream is dead today and probably this week. I won’t rule out Thursday for a stand alone announcement, but now we are getting too close to Fire Emblem definitely for a Direct of any kind. Pinning my hopes on Tuesday or Wednesday post-Fire Emblem week. Team January to the bitter end!

This thread is wild

4 days ago: No Nintendo Direct this week

3 days ago: omg we are gonna get a general direct or maybe a mini!!! I can feel it

2 days ago: XBOX DIRECT THIS MONTH FUXK YESSS TEAM JANUARY WINS

Today: NO DIRECT THIS MONTH RIPPPPP

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep this news for that direct in that case?

It feels this thread is going to be constantly dying until mid February or even March lol

I think we'll get some kind of news, but not necessarilly a General Direct or a Direct Mini. A few shadowdrops + Zelda Direct could be the the only things we get until E3. It would be worrying if Nintendo doesn't attend E3, another year without June Direct would be extremely disappointing.

Wow another team January fail, what a shock.
See you next month for the actual Nintendo direct and see you in 1 year for the next january failure.

I sense Team January is starting to sweat a bit. Will they prevail as they usually do or will Team February pull off an upset for the ages? Stay tuned.

Tbh I would be happy even with Twitter drops rn
The only thing that I want to see is a real Zelda trailer.

To be honest, BotW wasn’t my cup of tea
I love Zelda. I have played every mainline game of the series and I’ve been a fan for more than 10 years now
BotW was a beautiful open world, but imho not a great Zelda game. The dungeons were horrible, the boss battle all but fun and memorable and the story was kinda bland (but I can surpass this, my biggest problems are the first two that I have said.)
When they announced a BotW sequel, I wasn’t too trilled by the idea, but with time hype returned… but I’m still a bit skeptical.
I want a trailer that will show me that dungeons are a thing again and that this won’t only be a BotW 2.0 with new maps in it.

A good thing about the dream dying for this week is we can shift and better focus expectations.

Before a Mini without Zelda seemed fairly plausible, now we are looking more certainly at a proper Direct with Zelda and the usual chunk of new announcements. The potential of another March game is likely narrowing down to either a new casual game like Everybody 1-2 Switch, a remaster, or an eshop game rather than a brand new game more targeted to us. April is still wide open too and we have a much better chance about hearing about June games and beyond.

Some of you post like months have just 10 days.
I wouldn't mind, to be honest, it would mean i would have to wait less time until i can finally play TotK, but reality isn't so fun. ;]

Another puzzle

image.png

I found Castlevania and Dragon Quest, i'm good. Thanks.

I intend to play that this year.

There’s no way it’s that bad, right?

It's not an awful game and I've played much, much worse. It's just disappointing considering how good the prime trilogy games are. The game itself is just... weird. It has a terrible story, baffling character development, stupid design and progression choices, and middling controls (the NES wiimote gimmick is awful).

All of this makes an idea that could work (Devil May Cry meets Metroid) into a huge amount of nothingness. What makes it so bad is that it killed the franchise for six years (and then Nintendo made the baffling decision to release a mid shooter such as Federation Force in 2016). Mediocre game released at the worst possible time.

I still feel BotW was the best videogame I've ever played, but TotK shouldn't be just another BotW with new maps, I completely agree with you, and I think Nintendo knows that, but let's see they have for us.

Do you expect something else today? Tbh I won’t rule out a FE trailer.
I expect disappointment and Tears of the... Famiboards people.
