Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

even though the recent trailer was pretty minimal you now have to consider how Nintendo is setting up to properly market this game - we have the date, title, logos, boxart, and game-specific websites. it surely won't be long until we see more
The wait between the delay announcement (March 2022) and yesterday (September 2022) was longer than between now and a February direct.

Note to self: don't forget to live life in between Zelda news xD .

The wait between the E3 2021 trailer, and this trailer (15 months), is almost twice as long than we have to wait until the game release (8 months).

Luckily, we will get get gameplay videos and probably a couple more trailers between now and the games’ release, so the excruciating waits are all over.

something I find even crazier is how Tears of the Kingdom (May 2023) is the same amount of time away from right now as Legends Arceus (January 2022)

I think there's going to be an extended gameplay demonstration of this game at some point, either as part of a new hardware presentation or as a Treehouse, probably at the beginning of the year.

There might be a trailer at The Game Awards, or at the next Direct which will probably take place in February. You know, unless we get some hardware announcement before that.

Imo, them announcing the date this far out has some stealthy "Here, now shut yer teeth for the rest of the year".

A final story trailer is practically a given, but i feel like we need to see more in-game action. All we've seen so far are fragments. A thorough gameplay presentation like the first one had would be perfect for that. If not as part of a hardware presentation, then as a Treehouse segment after a February Direct

The trailer is still at #2 on worldwide trending on YouTube with 3.46 million views. On twitter, we've hit 3.2m views and 190K likes -- the second most liked tweet ever from NoA, behind Reggie's parting words to fans.

Yeah I think this game is going to fail just like splatoon 3

can't wait for record launch sales for this game because it will inevitable lead to "but its just more BotW" responses while totally missing how beloved and acclaimed that game still is 5-6 years after release.

I can't wait when blowout trailer comes and all the land will be so drastically changed, so concerns about the "same map" will be put to rest. Yes, I was somewhat concerned too (maybe still am), but that was when they announced in 2019. There is no way that after 6 years we would be basically visiting same Hyrule without major changes (and I know some of the landmarks are there) but there could easily be some major change to the map in the game itself which they are still hiding from us.

I would imagine that this game will take place after some length of time from Breath of the Wild, if only to justify changing topography, settlement development, NPCs, etc, on top of whatever havoc has been wreaked by Ganon with sky islands, dungeons, and so on

I get the feeling 1-3 years have passed since BOTW, not too much time. Characters have probably stayed the same, except Zelda. It would be interesting to see an older Riju though.

I mean, splatoon 3 released after 5 years and that's also epd. I don't see why TotK couldn't be the same type of sequel.

because Aonuma himself said that he wants this game to surprise people and that he thinks it will be a special gaming experience. Its also not a competitive multiplayer shooter.

Call me naive but after BotW I fully trust EPD 3's vision for the franchise.

EDIT: actually thinking about it they gained my trust again after A Link between Worlds came out

I can't belive it took me three years to think of this, but what the fuck happened to the divine beasts?
Well at the end of botw, zelda mentions that one of them have stopped working. I would assume that all shieka tech lost its power after calamity ganon was defeated, but guess totk will let ys know when it comes out

The only thing that makes me sad about the release date, is that I don't expect to hear one thing about this game again until February.

because Splatoon 3 is a multiplayer shooter, it will just not became something completely different with the next game. And iirc Splatoon 3 development started in 2019.
yeah... EPD 3 also doesn't have any other big franchises to make. Adding the fact that Fujibayashi was only a supervisor for the DLC its quite easy to see that the game was in production or development directly after BotW launched.

It’s a strategic business move to actually delay the game further into 2023 so they can release TP and TWW as apology games for the delay lol

This is a joke, btw.

I wonder what kind of limited edition we can expect to see for TotK?

The Limited Edition came with the map, Switch case (still have mine in use), soundtrack CD and collectible coin

The Collector's Edition came with all the above and then a beautiful Master Sword statue

I guess my thought is if A) they might have more than one limited edition with bonus stuff, and B) what could they do different? New soundtrack, artbook, updated map, new Master Sword/dried out Ganon statue or a stone tablet of the ancient art teased at the beginning of the new trailer?

Hoo boy, I can't wait to see the unveiling for Tears of the Kingdom's inevitable Collector's Edition. Gonna be a white-knuckle race to nab that one before it sells out.

Had it preordered from Amazon seconds after preorders went up only for Amazon to cancel the day of release and left me screwed so I was never able to get one. Was so damn bummed out by that. Still am all this time later. Oh well.

What really rubs me the wrong way is how some folks assume that Tears of the Kingdom started as DLC.

Just saw a Commonwealth Realm Video where he said that it was planned for 2018... but I didn't find any real sources on that.

All Aonuma said was (according to Polygon):

“... When it comes down to technical things, DLC is pretty much data — you’re adding data to a preexisting title. And so when we wanted to add bigger changes, DLC is not enough, and that’s why we thought maybe a sequel would be a good fit.,” Aonuma said.

When asked if this sequel was originally planned as DLC, Aonuma responded that “initially we were thinking of just DLC ideas, but then we had a lot of ideas and we said, ‘This is too many ideas, let’s just make one new game and start from scratch.’”

All this tells me is that they had so many left over ideas that couldn't realistically fit into downloadable content. Not that it was in actual development as planned DLC.

The misinformation really runs wild with this game sometimes. The same with the "Darker then Majoras Mask" quote. I blame certain clickbait Youtubers for that.

Also adding the fact that they're interviews translated from japanese to english so it muddies the waters even more.

I still have the LE and I have been using that Switch case since day 1. Love it!

Theory: Someone suggested that the green markings on the ground are areas where you yourself can raise chunks of the land up into the air. Do we think that it's possible that we are rebuilding Skyloft or something else? Maybe the Kingdom fell (tears) and we need to send each fallen chunk back into the sky and rebuild the original kingdom. Maybe it's Skyloft, maybe it's Zonai... can you imagine how epic that would be?

I bet I sound repetitive as hell but there is so much stuff they are hiding.

Why are the islands spaced out this much and why do they have cut off roads on them? It would really make a ton of sense.

The title is hitting me if they’re going for what we’re piecing together right now

The sky islands being shaped like tears (as if Hyrule is crying them), the time reversal probably reversing them to being pieces of an ancient kingdom…

I didn't even think of that. What a great point that reinforces the theory that the tears are the fallen chunks of the kingdom and we got to restore the sky kingdom. Could be the most epic game ever lol. I'm definitely intrigued.

Some of the sky islands seem like they could be flipped upside down. This isn't unprecedented, 4th temple in majoras mask had to be turned upside down to progress.

There is no way we’re not getting a Loftwing or something similar to freely fly around near the end of this. Or perhaps as some sort of post-game bonus. It just makes too much sense.

i wonder if the ouroboros logo is hinting at the game talking about the whole endless reincarnations of Link, Zelda, and Ganon from demise curse?

I’m getting so excited lol. It feels like we’re taking everything into account right now and slowly putting the big concept of the game together. The sky islands, the title, the time reversal mechanic….

I don't think they will get rid of the Master Sword, either.

Actually, it makes me wonder how we will repair the Master Sword. I know a lot about metals, and there's no good way to repair the Master Sword, realistically, besides melting it down (and getting more of the base metal), but that would kill Fi, possibly. It's a fantasy game, so maybe we'll just repair it with some magic method.

Maybe we have to use that new ability that can send objects back in time, on the Master Sword.

If we could do that, late in the game, we could repair the Master Sword by sending it back through time to its previous state, and, since I'm speculating, make Hyrule Castle return to its previous place.
Replying to my old post i made on Monday. Missed the mark, but not by too much.

It would also help with more gated/linear progression while still being fully open world. Fuck me. Can't wait!

♫♩♫Tears of the Kingdom, pain in my heart,
caaauuussed by yooooouuuuuu!♬♬♪

Anyway, what we saw looked pretty cool! I love vertical gameplay and this looks to have plenty of that!

So my opinion is that we figured out the main core concept of Tears of the Kingdom. To recap:

As you progress through the game, you will need to rebuild the Sky Island. You will have the ability to raise chunks of Hyrule back into the sky. By doing so reverses time on said chunks which would explain why they look different once they are actually in the sky. The more chunks you raise, the more they will eventually start to connect together. In some of the shots, you see roads and pathways on the island chunks that do not connect to anything but upon rebuilding the entire sky kingdom, these will all form one large sky kingdom. Could be Skyloft, could be the original Zonai kingdom. Maybe the two are actually one of the same. As you send chunks back into the sky, there will be craters on the surface world that likely can be explored revealing secrets and underground stuff to explore.

The Tears of the Kingdom is exactly that. Each island chunk is a tear that has fallen from the great kingdom that once was. Also represents tears in a kingdom as it was ripped apart. Your job is to restore the original kingdom. This will play a major role in defeating the evil and what not. Don't know how the entire story will work out but I feel confident that the core gameplay loop is restoring a long lost sky kingdom likely tied to the Zonai race that was done dirty by Ganondorf. As you send each chunk back in time which propells the pieces back into the sky, the former kingdom slowly becomes restored. It's been clear since the first trailer that time mechanics play a huge role and that island pieces can be raises as you saw Hyrule castle lift from the ground leaving behind a crater. Now we have enough evidence and information to piece together the restoration of the sky island and original Zonai race that inhabited said land.

Backing this theory until something suggests otherwise

The only thing it doesn’t take into account is that the PR blurb says the adventure will take link “to the sky and beyond”

But other than that it sounds so cool and in line with what we’ve seen

Once you finish restoring the sky kingdom, you have to restore the fallen moon. Then from the moon, you gotta put the sun back together. From the sun, you....

You still think a bombastic soundtrack would work well on that world ? BOTW's soundtrack is perfect for its exploration pacing and ambiance.
Having a loud as fuck overworld theme would just become annoying after 5 minutes. It's not Ocarina/Twilight Princess anymore where you stay in the overworld for 3 minutes top. Silence is part of BOTW's world. Nature has reclaimed its rights, it's dominating again.
Well I guess that I won't be buying Zelda games ever again. Some of us don't want a silent soundtrack. I want to have a soundtrack that I can remember.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the people who are looking forward to this game. Maybe someday there will be a Zelda game that can make me happy again.

I always took it for granted they would continue making original 2d Zelda forever, and they would continue the traditional style that way. But now I’m starting to doubt.
