Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

I believe there were references in BotW that hinted at them being an ancient Kingdom... but maybe I'm making that up in hindsight?

All we have so far are that they were a barbarian tribe living in Faron with statues depicting dragons, owls, and boars (getting a courage, wisdom, power vibe from that), with their ruins and dragon statues all over Hyrule.

I think they deliberately left a lot open so if they ever wanted to make DLC / sequels, they can spin up the concept of the Zonai living in the clouds with their ruins in the first game being just a small part of their civilization.

It's possible this ancient Kingdom isn't Zonai, of course. But the dragon imagery is too prevalent to rule it out.

The name Tears of the Kingdom could be interpreted so many different ways and I think we will only know the "true" ways once the game is released and we get to play it. Below are just my general first thoughts thinking about it:

  1. My first thought was that the "tear" references that one drop of water we saw in the last teaser right before Link flies through the air and goes through the ground of the floating island. Someone else here mentioned the 7 tear like shapes in the opening of this new teaser. Could be referencing powers related to this potentially new kingdom or maybe an old kingdom really (which does have potential zonai influences)
  2. My second thought was maybe the kingdom refers to Hyrule and the tears of it references the past troubles the kingdom faced. Some people theorize time travel (I mean we do have objects going "back in time" so it isn't that much of a stretch to extend it to the world overall). It could be referencing dealing with the past evils that tormented the world like Ganon as an example
  3. I then started thinking that tear could potentially not be a tear like from an eye but like tearing open a package (saw that others here also saw that potential interpretation too). Now what could that mean for the world is a big question mark lol It would be funny if it was like an extension of my last point and be a "tear" that opens things up for past evils to come back into our time or for us to go to their time.
  4. The last comment I wanted to make was in response to someone's question whether "tear" has any lore behind it in the zelda universe. The only "tear" I can think of is at the end of Twilight Princess (spoliers ahead) when Midna has that one tear at the end to destroy the mirror of twilight. The Twilight relm also houses a kingdom lol so maybe it is something with them but tbh could only just be a coincidence. Tho the weird figure with the 7 "tears" around it at the beginning did kinda give me twilight vibes (kinda like the helmet thing midna wears) and I did find that the second teaser music had hints of city in the sky ost lol so you never know.
I think that this trailer gave me more questions to think about than just pure hype. A nice change of pace. Also, love that the loftwings evolved into a flying surfboard :p jkjk

Can't wait for May!!!

We actually see who Zelda is touching hands with in this image:

We can see the two swirls, the hands touching behind the logo. On the left side, you can see the hair and head decoration, It's the same figure we see here:

I was guessing this is Hylia, and the swirls are sages? But then what do the two swirls in the picture of them touching hands represent?

The swirls look more like Amber Relics to me. I know they're supposed to be Magatama, but still.

I honestly don't think those are sages. I think those are the namesake tears. Above the two touching hands, you can see two tears connecting, mirroring each other.

and the big statue (probably a zonai bigshot) has 7 tears all facing in one direction. We also have two different looking Links. My guess is there is a dimension/time thing going on, and there is another 7 tears mirroring the ones the zonai bigshot is holding up there. The Zonai bigshot is also the one touching hands with Zelda, just sideways.

Also funny that Zeldas eye resembles the sheika symbol.

Surely someone has said it before, but I bet we'll get the 7 tears in the mural in 7 tematic dungeons like in classic 3D Zelda. My guess is that TotK will mesh the BotW and classic Zelda structures in someway.

Eh, all of these Zeldatubers are just a buncha baseless speculators, not much better than Game Theory.

Came here to post pretty much this too.

MonsterMaze, thats pretty much it imo
When I saw the time reversal and skydiving mechanics in this trailer they played out exactly like Monster Mazes's animated patent videos. Can see the exact moment where Link goes from a freefall pose to a diving and falling pose. Great channel.

well they were based on patents. He did good interpreting them the right way tho.

Yeah that's what I mean haha, he sufficiently satisfied my imagination until this trailer. Now we get to daydream about flying hoverboards

Durability gang, represent. I can't wait to collect weapons and actually use all of them.
I personally just hope the weapon power and enemy health curves won't be as steep as last time. Made the vast majority of weapons pointless.

The bone on big hair Link is actually an axe. My eyes were playing tricks on me. It seem that weapons other than swords are back. I hope there's no durability.
controversial take incoming. Elden Ring made me appreciate BotWs implementation of durability even more.
I wouldn't be mad if there are certain weapons that are breakable. Give me an upgradable, permanent starter kit / rewards with some more unique, breakable ones.

Elden Ring really didn't feel rewarding when you needed all these smithing stones for upgrades to get some fun out of your "rewards"

What we really need is a hand-to-hand option (that does peanut damage of course).

And my axe!
...Which is still breakable

But yeah, durability gave the fighting gameplay a big boost, I came to enjoy resource management over the years as well.

Give the anti-durability crowd an unbreakable deku stick and we're done. Or wait, make it the reward for finding all koroks all over again. "Hestu's Armament"

Looks like there's enough room on this hoverboard for a random enemy to get the drop on you, leading to aerial combat on top of it.

This just seems like such a fun thing to play with. A pilotable platform that you can jump off of at any time. That's crazy. There's obviously going to be some sort of limitation / cooldown so you can't cheese climbable walls on the surface, but I'm glad they finally incorporated a flying mount.

The figure you suggest is Hylia seems to share more than a few characteristics with the Faron light spirit from Twilight Princess. Face shape, ears, and certainly the swirl motif.

I wouldn't assume that's a player controllable thing though. But I mainly wanted to point out the crazy amount of sky islands that you can see in the distance a few seconds earlier in this scene. And that massive graffiti on that plateau is also pretty interesting.

BotW has some of my favourite zelda tunes. No idea what you're on about

yeah, no idea what is this about, this is some real western bs that music must be on loop all the time, or the music/soundtrack will be considered bad.

This is like when Ghibli's movies (especially Castle in the Sky) were released in the west and they asked Ghibli/Joe Hisaishi to make the music fill in every time Miyazaki has scenery scene with only natural sound because they think western audience doesn't think well of that vibe...

Speaking of that graffiti thing...you can also see another one here. And does it look like that sky island has just been ripped out of the ground there? Looks painful. No wonder the kingdom is crying. (been a while, that dark spot is/was a lake apparently, with Ridgeland Tower having been removed/vanished)

Found this kind of interesting, the thing in front of the glider at the end of the trailer:

If that's Zelda she's got some manhands on her lol but that also matches up with the stone carvings...they're freakishly large, but curved so it doesn't seem as noticeable. Maybe an ancestral Zelda then.

To be honest I'm not fan of weapon variety either. I'd more happy if BOTW only had sword and some power level upgrades. Maybe using exploration to find some interesting power up, idk.

At least Elden Ring made me take some time to experiment if some type of weapon worked better with some type of enemies. Though after some time the bad upgrade system discouraged me of doing so because I would need to spend a lot of resources when wanting to try a new weapon.

I'm not even fan of sword controls on BOTW. It's too simplified for my taste.
They were getting it right with Twilight Princess imo. The technique system(like Minish Cap) was great, the only thing missing were enemies where you really needed to use the techniques.

Then what will be the point of exploring other than getting trash materials all over the place?
I never felt rewarded receiving weapons on BOTW because of durability. Everytime I explored a new place and there a chest with weapons I had this feeling of wasting my time. It was like the Twilight Princess rupees.

There are tons of reward you can think for exploration. But if the response is breakable weapons I think I'd prefer no rewards at all. Something more empty like Shadow of the Colossus could be interesting, exploration of the sake of itself.

Okay hear me out, what if this is THE Majora? The Eyes and the triangular „sprinkles“ around them… just give me majora vibes.
Also in the end frame this thing is seen from the side, facing someone.

I've read similar ideas but personally I'm not feeling it. I'm nudging towards Hylia/Zonai Deity myself maybe loosely inspired from Majora in style somewhat.

I think there are some heavy references to the Zonai and hopefully, their lore is included into the entire BOTW story. The person could be Hylia but I think it's the Zonai leader trying to help Zelda (as is evident by their hands touching as someone explained earlier in the thread).

Yeah makes sense, but we know basically nothing of the original Majora, it was a „powerful demon-like being“. Imagine it is Zonai‘s equivalent to Hylia for Hyilians. Huge stretch, though some similarities are there.

I'm beginning to see Tears of the Kingdom ending up being the amalgamation of everything that has been so hey who knows.

Maybe the Picori will return as well 😁
