it would.

being good is another completely different thing tho

It just needs to be comedy and music driven, I wouldn´t want them trying to make the series into some sappy family film about an Inkling finding confidence/ friendship/ acceptance/ the power of team work

Open World 3D Mario and Switch 2 in H1 2024, book it.
EPD Tokyo has 2 games in development. It's 3D and 2D one acording to listings. I really doubt that the 3D one is coming in 2024, they are not going to wait 2 more years to release it. I think that Donkey Kong could be that 2D one but 3D is Mario and it should be ready in 2023 since maybe Tokyo shelved to EPD engine instead of their own. There is still possibility that something was cancelled along the way but we should get a better picture when next Direct comes.

Spitballing a September direct.

Could definitely fit another announcement in, and a lot of the first party stuff like Bayonetta or Mario + Rabbids could get their own spotlight segment as well, but this feels like a pretty safe prediction.
I'd swap Metroid Prime and Fire Emblem, otherwise this is almost my exact prediction for how it will go.

nah, either holiday 2024 or early 2025

splatoon 3 is getting support for two years
I mean, it was pretty obvious even when Splatoon 3 was first announced that it will be supported for a long time, Switch as a platform is not going anywhere anytime soon, I was always somewhat Switch Pro believer but not a Switch 2 anytime soon. Booster Course Pass also show this, so I have no idea how can people think that "Switch 2" will launch with Zelda next year. There is still posibility that Splatoon 3 could also release on "next gen" and work on two platforms but I would call that as a 0%.

Nah.

Splatoon 3 will get another year of extra support because of high sales, so support until late 2025. Then, they still don't want to overshadow Splatoon 3 with another console.

Therefore Switch 2 will not launch any sooner than Holiday 2026.

I still think Odyssey 2 got cancelled. We'll see the 2D game next year. The next game will be an open world 3D Mario building off of Bowsers Fury's structure, but considering the current Switch can barely handle BF (which is mostly water) the next one will probably be Switch 2 exclusive.

Small support can still happen after Switch 2 launch. It just won't be any big DLC. And who's to say Splatoon 3 doesnt get a Switch 2 port?

I know Square already have like three thousand games coming soon but man, if they announce anything regarding the SNES Quintet games, I'll scream.

I read a good theory from someone here that they think Odyssey 2 was cancelled in cca 2019 and that BF became a leftover of it and it was handled over to NST to somewhat finish it and tied it to 3D World. It could line up, but I would question it since it's EPD Tokyo, the masterminds of 3D platforming but anything is possible, still we can't forget that they were moved to a new location, covid happened and so on. Either way, I still believe that 3D Mario will show up next year in full force.

There's absolutely no way Odyssey 2/New 3D Mario has been in development for the same amount of time as BOTW2. There's just no shot. Especially if it's a sequel and not a brand new thing.

DLC support is more to keep online gaming communities / online subscription members engaged and returning to said games / services. I believe the Switch 2 launch has nothing to do with this game or Mario Kart getting two years of support as those games will most likely be playable to people upgrading to the new gaming device.

Live-A-Live HD-2D
Full remake of a mostly unknown game outside Japan, a game I LOVED and if Xenoblade 3 hadn't released a week later, I would've finished my second run).

Romancing SaGa 2, 3, Scarlet, SaGa Frontier Remaster
Not only RS 2 & 3 finally got an official english translation and a very good new look, a new game was released AND SaGa Frontier 1 got cut content restored & new scenario.

Collection of SaGa
All three Game Boy games in one package, sadly no french translation at all.

Collection of Mana
All three Mana games in one package & multiple translations for Trials of Mana for the first time.

Trials of Mana Remake
Along with CoM and using the exact same translation (sorry english players, you'll have to suffer Kevin & Charlotte's talk in both versions... the french version was spared this nightmare), full remake of the SFC Trials of Mana with new content.

That's already quite a lot considering none of these games are FInal Fantasy nor even any close to sell as much as any of the FF game. The SaGa games are pretty much niche at this point and yet, they already did a lot. So a "Collection of Gaia" wouldn't really surprise me but man I would be so happy... And even artists and devs of Quintet openly supported a campaign to ask SquareEnix to re-release Terranigma.

It's still to this day my favorite game of all time, flaws and all. It's a far from perfect game but it impacted me quite a lot (and man, that ending...).

I feel like we should have learned by now that trying to divine what EPD has been working on based on dev times is a fool’s errand.

I'm kind of hoping we get another cool Monday announcement for a Wednesday showcase. I kind of like the idea of having something to look forward to in the near future right now.

I am, because I think it would be dumb

it's not like 3DS. the switch flagship games won't have their intended lifecycles be cut short

I think it depends on how strong Splatoon’s 2 years of support are. If it’s like the previous game, in which it mostly died off after around 15 months but was still technically supported for the full 2 years, then I think it’s feasible the next console releases during that timeframe. Hell, Splatoon 2 still got support beyond the final splatfest, and I have to imagine Splatoon 3 will be the same. There’s only so long they can hold back the next console for the sake of a single game.

Splatoon 3 will be playeable and even bundled (at least in Japan) with Drake, the post-launch support has no affect on the release of hardware.

Don't forget we also got a Chrono Cross remaster that came with an all-new localization of Radical Dreamers, upcoming remakes of the first two Front Mission games (the second of which never released in the west), and a remaster of Tactics Ogre coming later this year.

so what if Odyssey 2 was just...never in production

what if Bowser's Fury was the plan all along, with no big budget 3D Mario sequel due to wanting to spread the Mario brand out across its many brands and instead just focus on new hardware or some other game (like the hypothetical MonkEPD).

does this make any sense? don't know. hard to tell with a combo of rising dev costs, HD dev time going up, covid happening, and the switch doing so well with its several mario releases that Odyssey 2 might not have been seen as "necessary". for all we know they just didn't wanna do the capture mechanic again. 🤷‍♂️

On a less shitposty note, while I know EPD Tokyo produced Bowser's Fury while NST did the bulk of the art and programming, did EPD Tokyo handle the concept and basic creative/game design? Or did NST handle that with EPD mostly handling production? Obviously they worked off of a lot of 3D World and Odyssey assets, since EPD did the 3D World port themselves, but they built an impressive expansion from that. Almost feels like it was the training game to designing Mario, like NSMB2 was for the Japanese staff (never forget that the director of the Splatoon series directed NSMB2 first).

If NST felt like they wanted to work on 3D Mario again, I'd love to see their take on it with their own design work.

sorry to everyone who wants to see them do wave race or something instead

if this thread doesn't at least reach this point we've failed, fami

this will be us with stinky horse game

Lmao, I like the third one, with the "when Killer Moth shows up and kill Joker", reminds me of the "Smash Bros memes from the future", which I absolutely loved, even though the intention was the opposite (Smash Bros Ultimate and its DLC being so good that people were joking about it having all the video game characters ever by the end of it and having a subspace emissary 2)

EPD staff are attached to the known patents of Bowser's Fury, including how Fury Bowser actually works. There are also NST staff attached to the patent on Bowser Jr.’s mechanics. Strangely, none of EPD Tokyo's sound team (Naoto Kubo, Mahito Yokota, Shigetoshi Gohara) were involved with the game.

Here's a breakdown posted a while back:

As is also brought up in that post, the Canadian Copyright Database generally lists the project leads, which means that Brian McNeely and Rory Johnston had lead positions here. If I had to guess:

Thinking about it, Kenta Motokura being credited in the BF patents but not having a lead position besides producer may add credence to the theory that it started as the next 3D Mario, but was ultimately scrapped and given to NST to flesh out. That’s just blind speculation on my part, though.

I was just about to type that I don’t think I can wait any longer for the sequel to Breath of the Wild information.

…then I realized I guess I’m going to have to 🤷‍♂️

The ultimate shitpost enters its next phase tomorrow. I’ve got others helping me (some are even professionals if that gives you a hint.)

It may seem stupid to work this hard on a shitpost but it’s starting to mean a lot to me, and it’s becoming very special. You will see what I mean when I release it :)

We could very well be less than a month away though. Hang in there!
