There are a lot (and I do mean a lot) of possible reasons, but the one that jumps out to me as a translator is that púrpura is similar to escarlata in that they're both words derived from medieval Latin, whereas violeta derives from French (violette).
I thought this could be the reason too, but if I'm not mistaken morado is the more widespread term across all Spanish dialects, while violeta skews LatAm. Púrpura sounds less common than either to me, which could very well be reason enough to pick it for neutrality reasons.
I know Arlo is controversial here, but I wanted to share his video about the trailer because I feel like it mirrors my own feelings so well.
Wouldnt be surprised if it was decided by the localisation team that violet is an obscure word and that purple is more recognisable.
I atleast know that in my language (no that isnt spanish) the equivalent of Scarlet is rarely if never used and i wouldnt be surprised if people didnt know it was a colour. However people do know violet tho...
Can you sum up said feeling because I'm not clicking an Arlo video..
Jeeze, people sure are touchy about youtubersCan you sum up said feeling because I'm not clicking an Arlo video..
Yeah, I get it. I can sympathize with the choice made, however, since calling them escarlata y violeta does sounds weird to me.Sure, that could be a reason, but, I mean, both words actually exists: violet is violeta and púrpura would be translated as purple, so they even have phonetical and lexical similar translations - and violet is a common color too. The thing is... that they have let scarlett as escarlata, which is the propper one, even though that color is very rarely used, and they have changed the common one - using purple instead of violet.
So instead of translating Scarlett and Violet as Escarlata y Violeta, they have chosen Escarlata y... Púrpura, which I can't properly understand.
He's mostly positive on it. Likes the open world, disappointed that some Arceus elements aren't making it over.
Yeah, I feel like we're still in the dark about some of the most crucial aspects of this game.I still need to see more(or reviews). Don't think I can make a good guesstimate based on the first two trailers on how I'll like this.
I can't get over the fact that, although it is Pokemon Spain, they have decided to change the name of the game for the spanish localization - it's not Pokémon Violet, but Pokémon Purple. Why tho?
Maybe another reason is that Violeta is used as a name while Púrpura is not. Same thing with Lila. There are a lot (and I do mean a lot) of possible reasons, but the one that jumps out to me as a translator is that púrpura is similar to escarlata in that they're both words derived from medieval Latin, whereas violeta derives from French (violette).

I don’t know honestly. People just don’t like him.Why is he controversial? I don’t follow him but his videos appear from time to time on my youtube feed.
As much as I would enjoy GF positioning themselves in support of Spain becoming a Republic, I sincerely doubt they're into making overt political statements like that. The third color on that flag is often referred to as morado and not púrpura, anyway.Maybe another reason is that Violeta is used as a name while Púrpura is not. Same thing with Lila.
Latam Spanish has a lot of local variations regarding which words are more common than others, but media (specially mexican dubs) uses “international spanish”.
At least in Chile morado is a really common word and no one says violeta or púrpura in a normal conversation, but I can see púrpura as something that an international dub would say. Maybe, as you said, TPC chose it as a neutral option.
And according to this website another reason is the flag from spain’s second republic.
As a side note, this gen could have been a really good time to introduce a latin spanish localization but it seems they won’t do it in the near future. I guess we will keep our placajes, motes and enhorabuena for a while.
Jeeze, people sure are touchy about youtubers
I will say that spanish history is not my forte so color me surprised (hah!) discovering that GF taking the color from that specific flag can be a political controversy. Chances are they either took the color from some other cultural element (Catholicism, grapes and wine, you name it), or from the same source the flag did (red representing Aragón, violet representing Castilla y León).

annoying puppetWait, what’s wrong with Arlo? Did he turn out to be some racist or homophonic jerk? I may have missed something.
I support the only city theory because it means the only spanish canon city in the Pokemon universe would be Barcelona and that would make twitter mad lolThe new BOTW has no towns is SV has only one city, seen it thrown around way too much lol. My guess is we get 1 city for each gym equivalent with one major metropolis style city in the middle of the region

i would say this is more a wishful thinking from some people pushing agendas that are not pokemon related XD.I will say that spanish history is not my forte so color me surprised (hah!) discovering that GF taking the color from that specific flag can be a political controversy. The more you know
And if in Spain they prefer to use morado over púrpura then GF’s choice is even more weird.
Progressing the story took no time at all. Just catching and evolving Pokémon is enough to get you to the end of the game both timesHappy to see trainer battles back in a more traditional way. I hope there are more cities and towns than what we've seen. Love that we are back to the present-day setting.
I know people are high on Arceus, but I hope they cut out the mobile game-like repeatable tasks from that game. If I'm required to catch multiple of the same species of Pokemon to progress the story I'm probably not going to be able to finish this game.

I checked the website I linked and it’s from Colombia, so they aren’t pushing any agenda. Most people in Latam countries don’t care about Spain’s politics. My bet is that maybe they knew the flag from history class in school or something.i would say this is more a wishful thinking from some people pushing agendas that are not pokemon related XD.
seeing as oranges and grapes are a focus on the game, i would go for that before some "obscure" flag
and regarding the choosing of purpura over violeta/morado/añil.... it just sounds better when pairing with the other, and specially it goes further apart from some pokemon clones/fanversions on internet (problably another reason)
nah, they just followed around some early twitter comments/rumors from the first trailer. it is funny its funny when things like that are collected on any website thoughI checked the website I linked and it’s from Colombia, so they aren’t pushing any agenda. In Spain purple=republic , even if not done in purpose it will still be associated with it. The tricolor It’s not an ‘obscure’ flag here in Spain it still used to this day to reclaim the Republic and you can see it on the streets everyday on people’s balconies. Of course outside of Spain it doesnt have that meaning and I don’t expect Game Freak to get into Spanish politics but if you do a region based in Spain and use purple it will be associated with that movement even if just for Twitter memes and they probably know it but just didnt care.i would say this is more a wishful thinking from some people pushing agendas that are not pokemon related XD.

i beg to differ XD that color on its own has many meanings, for me thats more something like wanting to see that... you can of course, but is still farfetched XDIn Spain purple=republic , even if not done in purpose it will still be associated with it. hahaha you caught it so quickly that I couldn't even yeah the postyou saw nothing!
it's 2 am i'm barely awake
I have no idea of trends on Youtube... But that's a lot right?the trailer broke 4M on the western channel. it's over, the fad is finally over
I mean, all my spanish friends, myself included, made instant jokes with the purple and the República. At least for my circle it was a very immediate association.i beg to differ XD that color on its own has many meanings, for me thats more something like wanting to see that... you can of course, but is still farfetched XD
we are not talking about a flag with purple, hell we are not even talking about flags at all! thats something it is forced on the debate.
we are talking about two separate colors, they even show oranges and grapes... thinking about something else is taking away the focus from what it is shown
well it's higher than any individual trailer from the Playstation event on the playstation channel.I have no idea of trends on Youtube... But that's a lot right?
That I can 100% agree with. Having to go to a move relearner is completely pointless these days and just a time tax (even worse if they make you pay something for it like they used to). And the link cable item just needs to be a thing going forward. I don't think they've done trade evolutions since what, gen 6? And even then there were only a couple. So it seems like something they're mostly doing away with anyway. If they bring nothing else from Arceus to SV, they better bring back changing movesets on the fly, manual evolution, and the trade evolution items. These are life changing features as far as Pokémon is concerned.
I feel like the wording doesn't exactly mean that gyms can be taken at any order, just that you're not prevented from going to the town of the 8th gym at the beginning of the game. like you go to the "last" gym only to be told you need 7 badges first
To be fair, that linearity problem is quite common in open world gamesMaybe the first and last gyms need to be done at a certain time, but the others should be able to be done in any order. Otherwise, what's the point of the open world? That's a linear game inside an open world.

Yeah that's how most open world games work. The ones where the story is truly nonlinear, or even with only distinct starting and ending points, are pretty few and far between. To be fair, that linearity problem is quite common in open world games
given how intertwined gym progression was to story progression (arbitrarily, I might add), that's why we think that the text also means gyms can be done in any order.Yeah that's how most open world games work. The ones where the story is truly nonlinear, or even with only distinct starting and ending points, are pretty few and far between.
That being said, the fact that it does specify that you're not going to be dictated by the story does imply this one may be one of those exceptions
