Hoping for a XY -> SuMo level improvement. Arceus was fine, but not quite where I wanted it to be in terms of focus/priorities.

It's also exciting to think about the graphical upgrades since the last trailer because Arceus improved dramatically since the first showing. Although I'm quite content with how SV looks now, better is always better obvs.

listen, as a casual I am a vibes-based player

I get that jrpg poisoned gamers crave contrived plot points and absurdly high stakes, but to a vibes-based player like me "two rival schools reconcile to defeat a shared threat" has the makings of a great story with great vibes

Pokémon has both insane stakes and incredibly unambitious narratives recently. Just look at the whatever they attempted to do with Sword and Shield or even that poor fan fiction that was USUM.

Their best was BW, SM and to some degree Legends because the completely obvious plot twist in the true ending was very sick looking at least.

See, I personally really liked the vibes in the start of Sword and Shield. Being a kid in a big regional competition reminded me of band competitions and auditions as a grade schooler, and I had hoped they would lean further into that vibe. Instead we ended up in a really crappy plot about saving the world from fucking Jeff Bezos during the Olympics.

My hope for schools theory definitely hinges on it being executed well, which is both subjective and, as you point out, not supported by precedent. If the shared threat is compelling but realistic, I think it could end up feeling more like a Ghibli film than a halfhearted attempt at the sort of grandiose story that other JRPG series do much better.

I think Rose did that because he knew all the strongest trainers in the region were at the tournament, so he thought he could get away with it easier. He simply forgot about the flying taxi service the region is known for.

There has never been anything as effective in Pokémon as climbing a mountain and getting your ass kicked by your character from the previous game.

Everytime something ominous happened and the grown ups told the player character to just worry about the Gym battles was so great. Would love for the world saving plots to disappear.

Yeah, I miss when legendaries were just chilling somewhere instead of being involved in some cross-dimensional scheme to end life and reality. They actually felt way more important when you had to explore a hidden optional dungeon to find them instead of just appearing in front of you with hours of foreshadowing.

Pokémon is at its best when it's just a cozy adventure in an unkown world waiting for you to explore it.

For all its worth, i think scarlet and violet are a substantial upgrade from the past pokemon games visually. Its clear gf cares at least.

The Kirby effect. Pokémon cosmic horror confirmed lol

Agreed. Ever since X and Y I don't even watch Pokémon trailers anymore because I don't want to know the Pokémon. I've seen all starters this time but I will do everything I can to not see the evolutions and most other Pokémon. Seeing a new Pokémon for the first time in game is a great feeling and having it evolve without you knowing what it's going to look like might be even better.

Another reason why I like the beginning of Pokémon games way more than the latter parts. As soon as I've been to every route the excitement ist way lower. I haven't even caught the legendary in Sword lol

That was my major complaint about SS story. You are not involved with it, you don’t see it happen, everyone wants you of it… and you still end up saving the world fighting against a Pokémon version of a doomsday device.
At least in Sun and Moon the world saving angle was secondary to the family theme from start to finish.

the post game fight in Legends is up there with the Red fight in GSC.

debate me

Deoxys vs Rayquaza in ORAS is better than both. That movie was amazing.

Also that feeling when you find out that Pokémon you've been investing in forever won't evolve lol

I miss this, I think the last time was probably Sableye in gen 3.

Yeah I can see that perspective as well. For me it was just less time spent with the side of Pokémon that I don't enjoy.

I honestly haven't been this excited for a Pokemon trailer since the original Sun/Moon days. Every pre-launch from USUM to SWSH had me worried or annoyed about something. To be fair I wasn't excited for Arceus and got it a week after launch after seeing other people enjoying it (which I did too!)

You say that but then you describe your preferred plot as basically being the plot of Xenoblade 3: Two rival schools nations, one more traditional machine-focused, the other more progressive ether-focused, but in the end they learn to put aside their differences to fight the true enemy.

Seriously though, I have no problems with the potential plot you describe but it does sound anime as hell. If you wanted it like a ghibli movie, there wouldn't be a true enemy. Unless you meant a more general non-person threat, that'd be cool.

for some reason in my head the shared threat is like, bureaucracy and/or budget cuts

I guess from up on poppy hill got into my head too much lol

The two schools rumor, if true, is going to make the version choice more interesting than it has ever been

that's pretty exciting, fire emblem-like

the evil team is going to harness the awesome power of the box legend to fulfill the ancient prophecy of shutting down the local rec center

My birthday is november 23rd, so Pokémon on my birthday has always been a tradition for me. I'll be so excited to buy me a Pokémon game as a gift again instead of being like "uh, yeah, I guess I have to buy this..."

Thinking I might ignore this and begin my usual blackout policy - SwSh and Arceus were really fun when experiencing new Pokemon for the first time in-game.

Goodbye to everyone's avatars. 🥲 I just know there's gonna be a new little weirdo revealed tomorrow everyone will obsess over and bits and pieces are gonna get through and confuse the hell out of me for a few months.

Looking forward to avoiding even more designs and footage for months, yippee

At least this being so close to the hypothetical June direct means there probably won't be a trailer there, so I'm mostly safe. Unless they show repeated footage

As someone who never cared or paid attention to the stories in these games, all I want is cool looking new pokemon, good music, and the battles/menus to be quick and snappy. The last being the most important. The last few Pokemon games I played felt sluggish.

I wouldn't mind some new gimmick along the lines of the Regi trio or Feebas hunting! Those were the times man

I'm ready to see some new Pokémon. The starters this time around were so good, I need more. I don't expect starter evolutions to be shown just yet, but I guess we'll see.

I think Pokemon works really well with lower stakes, personal stories that are paced well and let you focus on your adventure. This is why I enjoy the Gen 1 story even though it's very minimal. You stop a crime boss by being good at Pokémon, but most of the story is just your journey to compete in the league and the different people and scenarios you get into along the way. It's also why I like Sun and Moon's story - the villain isn't a take over the world kinda deal, it's a selfish and abusive mother, and that's a strikingly small scale conflict. And the rest gets to focus on your island challenge. Of course it's all on execution. The XY story sucks because the characters suck and the villains aren't interesting, despite it being as minimal as, say, Gen 3 or Gen 4.

I think the general set up of Gen 8's story is great. Pokémon League as sporting event is a very natural transition that allows for a gripping narrative without having to go big. But of course Game Freak wanted to go big but didn't have the time or budget to really see it through. So level design is lacking, and all the cool things happen offscreen, and it doesn't come together. I hope Gen 9 can be different, regardless of the scale they choose.

I am also born in Nov but early Nov so in my case it has always been gift me money (or gift cards) so I can buy it in one-two weeks

Curious now - what did you think of Sun and Moon? Those were my favorite Pokemon vibes since, uh, maybe ever.

Sword and Shield had great England vibes. Literally the only time I've seen Costa Coffee or black public bins in a video game. Now that's representation!

Don't forget the Shellder on the Train Ticket machines. Got to love the Cloyster cards

So, guessing region name, a few basic Pokes, maybe a regional forme?

As for story, yeah, miss me with the absurdly high-stakes stuff. But to be honest, just give me interesting human antagonists - Ghetsis, SuMo Lusamine (let's not talk about USUM), Team Skull etc. The best Pokemon stories are, ironically, human stories.

The first SwSh trailer after the reveal was actually pretty meaty. Revealed several new Pokemon, several areas (including our first look at the Wild Area), and the box legends. Granted, that was part of a full presentation and not a standalone, but I'm still expecting some pretty significant stuff here, especially since it could lead into a Treehouse segment if they're doing those this year. I think we'll at least get to see how the open world works

wasn't also the first appearance of characters like Sonia?

Toshinobu Matsumiya, who has written the main story for every new gen game since Gold/Silver, had the same role for Arceus. Ever since XY, he's hasn't been really involved with the mid-gen games. So I wonder what that means for his role for SV. Well, the director of the game usually comes up with the overall concept anyway (except for SM where it was done by Takao Unno).

I'm not too interested in the story, but I thought I'd point it out since people where talking about it.
