Don't think you could get away with how aggressive the auto-aim is in those games in a modern title. It feels an awful lot like Metroid Prime without the lock-on, and those games did it as a means of de-emphasizing combat and combat skill in favor of exploration. In full throttle action games like Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, you can't de-emphasize the combat, as it's kinda the main selling point. Halo's implementation of auto-aim kinda changed the game on how auto-aim works in console shooters, and FPS games that followed have taken a lot of influence from it, so something like it is what people expect. You could probably do it in a deliberately retro title, a game intentionally trying to capture the feel of those N64 shooters, sort of like some of the games made today that deliberately attempt to emulate older shooters.

I was wondering myself how much nostalgia there is for these types of shooters. Agent 64 is the first and only one that comes to mind that actually draws from N64 shooters instead of the Wolfenstein/Rise of the Triad style old school FPS.

Donkey Kong Country: Return of the Kong
It's actually a new trilogy:

The Return of the Kong
The Two Kongs
The Fellowship of the Kong

But the secret is its supplemental materials, such as the Simarilikong, Unfinished Kongs, Tales from the Perilous Kong, and so forth.

The theming takes a bit of a turn with the epic followup: The Once and Future Kong.

64 is way more important and is better for its time, but Sunshine is better when judged today

64 controls like a wet fart, and it's not just the camera. Mario looks like a thumb. Bowser looks like a butt

Sunshine has plenty of issues, but for first-time players it gives the better experience today

My first experience with Mario 64 was just terrible, terrible, terrible. Sunshine has a lot of problems for sure, but my first playthrough of 64 just left me miserable. I still think it's a good game but it was infuriating to play a lot of the time.

Mario's controls themselves are great ... in a vacuum. The moment you touch any terrain with weird physics properties though? It feels awful. Slopes are a huge bother in that game and don't seem to work properly. The fact that slopes 99% of the time don't let you recover is one of the worst decisions you could make in an early 3D game, even at the time I can't believe they made that kind of decision. Unless I'm misunderstanding something about how it works, the flight cap has to also be the worst controlling powerup I've ever used in a Mario game. It's just awful. Then the wall-head-slam mechanic. The amount of times you'll trigger a wall slam because you had even the tiniest amount of momentum is beyond frustrating. I've had times where I miscalculated the smallest, most insignificant jump, but because of the wall slam I die. Why?

There's also just tons of outright bad level design, the kind of stuff that even if I do end up loving the game eventually I don't think I would ever change my opinion on. Like Jolly Roger Bay making you start so far away from a lot of the objectives (I can't quite remember how early you can unlock the cannon, but for the stars that don't use it it sucks nonetheless). Same thing with Dire Dire Docks, only that level is way, way worse. I get it's supposed to be cinematic but who thought it was a good idea starting you on the exact opposite side of the map only to traverse a long, boring underwater pipe? Tiny Huge Island is a novel concept but is just terrible to traverse if you ever end up stuck in the opposite mode you're supposed to be on a certain part of the map. And don't even get me started on Shifting Sand Land, maybe my most hated level in any video game.

Some of the flaws are so bad that I'm honestly surprised that this game got people into 3D gaming, then I remember that A ) that's a pretty American-centric way of thinking, judging by the N64's success in general and B ) that's the whole point of the star system ... to basically skip anything that's mildly infuriating. I was really excited to play this game because one of my problems with Odyssey was that the overinflated star count and the lack of the stars feeling like hand-crafted challenges made it so that I was never really that interested in 100%ing the game.

Mario 64 turned me off collecting so much that I don't think I'll ever try to go for 100% in another Nintendo platformer again unless it's a course-clear game. It's just that bad to me. Ironically, that lesson learned probably helped me to enjoy Sunshine more than 64, too. I overall found Sunshine to be my favorite of the 3D All-Stars collection, with 3D World still being my favorite 3D Mario (based off memory). I do plan to retry Mario 64 with an NSO N64 controller, though.

Imagine if Nintendo starts talking about getting into the NFT business in the next Direct lol
It's going to happen eventually.

It might not be in the next year or so, but in the end Nintendo will put its spin on it.

Or maybe not. It could also happen that the enitre industry is screaming at Nintendo "GET INTO NFT'S"

And Nintendo is like

It wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo eventually got into the NFT game. They have shown that if there is a money to be made in a market (mobile, amiibos, ect) then Nintendo will look to capitalize.

Ah no way! I was one of the lucky winners in the holiday raffle :)

Alright fam– what do we think. I had held off on buying Shining Diamond, even tho it was my first gen and I have nostalgia for it, not wanting to pay $60 for a middling remake or tire myself out on Pokemon ahead of Legends. Should I take my winning as a sign and go for it, or can someone sell me on SMTV?

I will say, I tend not to be the biggest turn-based fan unless the world / universe really captures me. From what I can tell, SMTV seems rather linear in world design, and having something open and explorable is quite important to me.

I wouldn't doubt anything after the limited time digital game collection XD

They sparked some controversy with the amiibos but I think they never had micro-transactions stores in their mainline games, unlike Microsoft and thirdies, so at least I'm hopeful they won't mess with their games.

I wouldn't doubt that they could introduce some random dubious collectible outside of games though, like they already limit access to wallpapers with platinum points (that are free and relatively easy to get as of now) but doesn't look like it as of now

Nah, there is no future in that atm. Only if (and that's a big 'if') it's matured enough they will enter.

Nintendo Direct Announces Nintendo Fun Token. These tokens will come in the form of amiibo which can be scanned on your switch to unlock in game cryptocurrency.

lol.

Congratulations on winning!

SMTV is actually pretty open, it has huge open areas that you can explore. The main objective is always clear, but exploration is VERY rewarding. And since you like Pokémon, I think you would feel right at home with the monster collecting. The game is all about building your team managing element affinities and skills.

God, I hope not. There was that thread a few days ago about what Nintendo could do to dampen your excitement for the next system. At the time, I didn't really have an answer, but making NFTs a big part of their marketing for it would actually me reconsider buying

Nintendo won't mess with NFTs, they have more elegant ways to rip off their players, thank you.

NEW NINTENDO LEAKS! GAME CONFIRMED?!
mock boxart of leaked game
red circle around face
red arrow pointing to circle
I know this can apply to a factorial dozen number of YouTubers but the only one who for some godforsaken reason keeps showing up in my phone's notification screen is always RGT85.

Every fucking time.

Hey everyone!!!! New to the board and just thought I would introduce myself. Been a lurker for a while.
Two opening remarks
First time playing through Paper Mario 64....... wow what a fantastic game! I'm loving every second of it.
Subway is absolute trash and you should all be ashamed of yourselves

It's true but you gotta say that on the inside

Nahh, Nintendo is still conservative when it comes to paid DLC and thank God they haven't introduced MTX to full priced games.

So it looks like KOTOR on Switch counts sleep mode towards your in-game playtime total. I'm assuming that won't apply at the account/system level, but in-game shows me as 8 hours when I should be around maybe half that at most.

by the time Nintendo thinks entering at the NFT stuff, that bubble will be far from bursted. They are pretty slow to catch up with these things (DLC and Season Passes took them forever to apt), and NFTs will soon fade away, as they're generally pretty badly received across the globe.

It’s clear from this exercise that people are hungry for Zelda.

Now a question for the super fans, if you knew The Sequel to The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild was releasing in late 2022, but would be updated to support 4K on a revision in early 2023, would you wait to play it?
Nah, I play my Switch exclusively in handheld mode so 4K support means nothing to me and as long as the next system is a hybrid I will continue play solely in handheld.

I’ve found only in the last year I’ve started to use it exclusively in handheld, and I actually attribute that to disliking how most games look on my TV. Getting less tolerant of lower resolution Switch titles - that said I highly doubt BotW2 will be under 900p.

Seems like most here couldn’t care less about resolution :X I should have also thrown in and/or 60 fps in my question.

The issue with your proposed scenario is that there's no certainty that I could even get my hands on a revision in early 2023. Some of us could be waiting until late 2023. :p

Let's put it like this: If BotW2 is releases in November 2022 and there's a revision in March 2023 that will play the game at 60fps and higher resolutions (native in handheld, up to 4k docked) I would wait if it was guaranteed that I could actually get the new hardware at launch.
