If Nintendo was in danger of running out of games, I think they would sit on Side Order longer.

The behind the scenes stuff sounded like the Switch 2 reveal would be pretty substantial in March. I’m not sure I subscribe to this exactly, but I wonder if perhaps they had the strategy of splitting up big batches of game announcements they had between now, March, and say April or May, before another presentation in June/July. That wouldn’t necessarily explain how Side Order and Peach were handled though unless the big shakeups really were a last minute “Nope, we tried, but we just can’t guarantee November, so we need to push it back.”

Regardless, even if this event is more low key and a March Switch 2 reveal, if it still happens, is more low key, I just don’t think we’ll have to wait too long to hear about what’s going on this year. I could see another presentation in April to explain the revised year better because if we are in shoot dramatic change mode they need to suddenly make this year seem appealing still quickly.
To be fair, Splatoon usually has a 2 year service date so there is kind of a ticking time bomb on that DLC. Maybe they can extend Splatfest for another year but with the latest update having the final Salmon Run Map, I don't think there is going to be many big updates left and they definitely want to release the DLC before then.

I wish these rumours didn't come out on a Friday. If Nintendo hears an outcry, maybe they will have to say something (Like MS had to), but with it coming out on Friday, we have two days where nothing will or can be said.
We’re a bunch of irrational babies, we deserve nothing.

Except a great system next year.

I'm in a very comfy win-win situation. I have so many games in my backlog and on my eshop wishlist that I probably won't get through the bulk of them even before 2025, so a breather is actually what I've been asking for. 😅 But if 2025 ends up being misinformation and we get new hardware earlier than that, rad! We finally get to see the thing and probably fill the few remaining holes in the epic years-long Future Hardware puzzle.

Either way I'm good.

Sorry yall. 😅
Same. It almost confuses me that this take isn't more widespread. Except not because caring enough to discuss this inherently trends negative, while everyone else just gets on with their lives.

I'm crossing my fingers that they're contemplating not moving the schedule for the reveal and just letting it be known about for a year. Nobody NEEDS or DESERVES information, but there's too many people that can't chill because they're twisting into knots about the possibilities

I find that we need to center ourselves, ergo it's time to ask the important question: Will Nintendo finally stop being cowards and let Vivian be trans? Will TTYD be another game that will have queer characters? Why will this conversation eventually turn into a 3000+ page discourse about Edelgard?

Yeah I understand not everyone is as into indies as I am so big tentpoles and AAA games are gonna be more important and new hardware would facilitate those. But it's still too bad that if we still end up with some neat games this year, many people (and the press and all that) will probably be too worked up over hardware to fully appreciate that. Either way I agree that if March 2025 is indeed the thing, I'd hope they let us know about the system sooner rather than later. Otherwise this is gonna be a painful year for discourse.

Sorry, guys, I'm clearly going through the five stages of grief. I'm on the bargaining part
I wish the actual stages of grief had a "fuck it, backlog time!" stage

Since Nintendo loves taking the "third option", look forward to them replacing Vivian with Francis

Sorry for working a day job and not being able to tweet the moment news break & for not living on the internet. Are you going to say Bloomberg's report is also a joke because it came many hours after VGC, EG and such reported it?

And the timing is for context that the chatter of Q1 2025 started several days ago. It's not meant as a "I've known this" type of way. Amazingly, it can take some time to check with sources and make sure the chatter had some sort of foundation.

As I don't have an X account, let me ask you here : Fire Emblem 4 Remake is still relevant ? :)

You said this game was ready, that it was just a matter of time before Nintendo announced it...? Has anything changed since then ?

Thanks :)

And that Nintendo doesn’t care about you.

This might be something that you don't know the answer to, but was the Partner Showcase delayed because of Microsoft or because of the Switch 2 delay? Both kinda happened at the same time.
Of the two, it would be the former -- but that's opinion. As I've said on Twitter, if we see an Xbox game in the Direct then we have our answer.

So potential 2024 by Nintendo:
  • Princess Peach
  • Fire Emblem 4 Remake
  • Paper Mario
  • Luigi's Mansion 2 HD
  • Metroid Prime 2 (and 3?)
  • Pokémon game
  • Maybe Zelda remakes

Am I missing something?
Mmm a year a full of remakes of games I already own. My favorite. /s

Look, we already got the best game coming out on Switch already

No, not TTYD, this:

You might think I'm joking...but I'm not. This is gonna be my Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom.

anybody who doesn't have a day job and lives on the internet (like me) should've noticed you casually drop early 2025 like three days ago

ah i see from yesterday to today i've entered from the 'meta funny that we care so much' right back into into the grief era of the direct discussion

For 2024, give me:

WWHD
TPHD
MP2
MP3

And I’ll be good (y)
Yeah I’d be good with this. Throw in FE4 too..
Potentially (or hopefully) some if not all of these are games that Nintendo are sat on for a rainy day. (& from where I’m sitting it’s pouring now)

Feel like I'm going a little crazy here - do people think 2024 is a "barren" year in the industry as a whole? It's February and we've already had multiple GotY candidate titles, including:
  • Prince of Persia
  • Persona 3 Reload
  • Helldivers 2
  • Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth
  • Tekken 8
  • Granblue Fantasy Relink
And have these in the next three months:
  • FF7 Rebirth
  • Unicorn Overlord
  • Dragon's Dogma 2
  • Princess Peach
  • Rise of the Ronin
  • Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes
  • Stellar Blade
  • Hellblade 2
  • Homeworld 3
And have these in the rest of the year (and these are only ones dated for this year, off the top of my head):
  • STALKER 2
  • Paper Mario TTYD
  • Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2
  • Indiana Jones
  • Avowed
This...is barren? And again, it's February. Nintendo hasn't had a single presentation yet this year - and the above is just off the top of my head! Seems to me there's already something for everyone, with more on the way to be announced.

If anything, it feels bad there being such a huge schedule of impressive games releasing and seeing sales records set left and right when it's such a bad time in the industry for the people making them.

How dare you try and be reasonable and positive at a time like this /s
I hear you, despite currently feeling like an 8 year old who has just been told Christmas has been cancelled, 2024 is certainly not barren.
Some great games already released & yet to come.

I may even do the unthinkable and tackle my backlog this year.

I don't have a day job and I live on the internet and I remember Nate saying early 2025 was a possibility like last year

I remember because I really wanted him to be wrong about that but, welp

It's just waiting for Nintendo to announce it.

Thanks again :)

For the moment, I'd say:

  • Princess Peach Showtime!
  • Fire Emblem 4 Remake
  • Paper Mario TTYD
  • Luigi's Mansion 2 HD
  • Metroid Prime 4
  • Pokemon

It could also have Metroid Prime 2 and 3.... But I prefer to be careful :)

Wii U VC had a banger 2016

Hopefully Nintendo replicates that for NSO this year
Team ROMs gaining in strength. Let's have Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64, Smash Bros, Mischief Makers, Wario Land, Wario Land 2, Wario Land 4, Super Mario Land, Donkey Kong 94, Mole Mania, Drill Dozer, Mother 3 and Mega CD games!

call it denial, but it feels like things don't quite add up

We hear all the time about how Nintendo's pipeline is such that they'll often sit on finished games, that they currently are sitting on multiple finished games. And there's several big teams like the 3D Mario team and Mario Kart team that should have been getting things ready for a console launch for some time now. All the rumors were they're skipping their usual Feb general direct in favor of a partner so that they can announce Switch 2 for this year and start marketing crossgen/next-gen games for it ...

And then today we hear from virtually everybody that the Switch 2 has been delayed just weeks before the planned announcement because the software just isn't there yet, and that they're also looking at a mostly-empty 2024? I don't have a good explanation or compelling alternative, but the vibe around this just feels hella weird
My guess is that the delay is genuinely just something that's been decided on in the last 2 weeks and that it's more about the software pipeline for the first year or two than problems with a specific game targeting day one. Nintendo are going to want that guaranteed regular cadence to keep the system going.

Part of me also wonders if some major third party exclusive, or collaboration, also hit problems. We've just had Bandai-Namco cancel 5 unannounced games, for example, so things really are in trouble all over the place.
(for those curious about the seemingly inconsistent raccoon lore, recall that I don't have a day job but instead a night job)
checks the big book of lore
Raccoons are nocturnal, this checks out.

Every single time I think I'm a hopeless pessimist, I check this forum and I'm reminded that I'm more positive and optimistic than like 80% of the people on here. Kinda helps my mental state in a weird, roundabout sorta way.

Dooming is a important part of the Nintendo cult.

I think we should make a Speculation Containment Thread after this one so that we don't clog up the general thread wondering what's next.

I mean presumably it's Partner Showcase by Thursday at the latest, and then Pokemon Presents by or on the 27th. Thinking about Nintendo's release calendar, Pokemon Presents is also well timed because it'll mean they have at least more than one confirmed and dated release on their schedule. But if it's Peach in March, Pokemon in November, that's a big stretch to fill at some point.

At this point I don't even care when this Partner or whatever Direct this is

Oh, we just got pulled back into the correct timeline where the Switch 2 is releasing this year.

Grateful that the Stardew Valley 1.6 update is coming to consoles this year.

Also grateful that past MisterSpo stocked up on RPGs last year.

my irrational hype for silksong stops me from fully not caring about any gaming event. xbox, ps, nintendo, indie, tga, gamescom, summer game fest, whatever. i always have a slight bit of hope that silksong could show up.

lmfao. so now that every one and their grandma has reported on it, not only does he say that he also knew about it, but also has to mention that he's been aware of the news for a few days now. what a joke.
Coming out of the woods to shit on Nate. But never around when they get stuff right
