StarTopic Anime |ST| Is Captain Falcon more anime than Fire Emblem?

Gunbuster 1-6

Only took me six months to finally watch the Blu Ray I purchased. Having an entire 26-50 episode mecha show condensed into 6 ovas definitely lead to some early parts feeling rushed, but it did lead to the crazy peak mecha action in episode 5.

Episode 6 was Anno going full Anno and I dunno how to feel about it or the ending as a whole.

I highly recommend Gunbuster, especially if you're a fan of Anno's other work.

I watched Gunbuster last year and while I enjoyed it overall the last episode is one of the best episodes of anime I've ever seen. I especially love the ending.

Noriko saying "goodbye, Kimiko, I'll never see you again" and the "welcome back" 12,000 years later is the perfect 1-2 bittersweet gut punch.

Gunbuster > Evangelion

There I said it
I can't agree with this for the simple fact that Evangelion's tackling of identity/anxiety/mental health issues continues to be incredibly impressive all these years later. I've never seen any other form of media I could show to people and say "this is what it's felt like to me", and I was well passed the point in my life where I attempted to take my own life due to those issues. It's also not 90's nostalgia talking, I didn't see Eva until the 2010's.

It's also awkward going back and seeing Noriko go from traumatized to unstoppable bad ass in the space of a few minutes. You can absolutely see how the success of Gunbuster let Anno really go all in on the themes and issues Eva would later tackle. The OVA format really hurts the series ability to investigate these things because the story has to move on. We can't spend 6 episodes on Noriko training to overcome the bullying and "nepo baby" accusations, she has to get there in the span of 5 minutes.

I think Evangelion is the sort of show where if it connects with you, it tends to resonate. So I absolutely understand your viewpoint.

Arknights S2 ended, and it absolutely destroyed me. 😭
It's the first time I had to pause an episode because I got so overwhelmed with sadness.

This season has been amazing, definitely liked it more than the first.
But omg my my heart.. what a bleak series.

Waaaaait that was the last episode? That passed over my head lol
Haha yeah for some reason Arknights is sticking to an 8ep season at a time. Maybe budget reasons idk.

I hope they confirm another season, I've been enjoying it a lot! I'm considering checking out the story on YT as well since I don't have the attention span to play a mobile gacha game. XD

Aside from this,
I AM SO GLAD I got Frieren and Apothecary Diaries this season!

Feels like I stumbled upon 2 gems that are for once not that underrated!
And deservedly so tbh!! Both mc's are amazing and unique, I just love it!

100 Girlfriends 8

The anime staff did not need to go as hard as they did for the kiss zombies episode, but I'm glad they did. Too bad Hakari and Karane don't remember what happened this episode :p

Never heard of Dandadan but that trailer looks super wild.

The first chapter has an infamous scifi trope(if anyone’s watched the OG episode of SG1 for example) but after that while it’s still funky horny it’s drops the one issue of the first chapter. And it gets wild weird and just has gorgeous art. So it’s in good hands. But the art surpasses the writing XD

Basic setup is alien geek guy and occult enthusiast girl challenge each other only to find out both exist with (first chapter spoilers)
Aliens trying to probe the girl(who awakens her psychic powers. Oh and her aunt is a professional psychic), and Turbo Granny stealing the guy’s balls and possessing him. The search for his balls becoming a main plot point as they fight both the supernatural and alien invaders

Getting back into anime. I swear I always take huge breaks. Continuing Spy x Family Part 2. It's definitely a bit worse than the first part, but I'm still enjoying it.

Episode 6 was Anno going full Anno and I dunno how to feel about it or the ending as a whole.
Wait, what don't you like about the ending? Been a long time since I've seen it but I remember Gunbuster's ending being a masterpiece despite the show just being pretty good.

Cloverworks and WIT have it tough because a huge chunk of the material season two is covering is a more or less random assortment of slice-of-life segments. Works pretty well for a weekly manga, but hard to stitch together into full episodes. A hypothetical season 3 would probably run into the same issue, though there’s at least more focused mini-arcs.

It’s an action shonen manga where I swear the author is writing by the seat of his pants, coming up with any excuse to deliver the most hilarious/awesome double spreads he can.

The anime staff did not need to go as hard as they did for the kiss zombies episode, but I'm glad they did
High five! The studio knew their assignment was to be as dumb fun as possible and they aced it. My girlfriend loves it and she doesn’t even like harem romcoms and ecchi scenes.

Not really? Quite a few do have things planned out
I think in general fans overestimate how much writers plan stuff out ahead of time (including authors like Oda who are famous for having storylines span literal decades). The weekly grind means being able to think on your feet and change things last minute. It’s a very important skill to be able to have, but also probably why modern weekly manga rarely runs for over a decade like some older series did lol

Of course, but most of them do have a general outline planned, which I cannot confidently say for Dandadan.

Sure, what I meant by “the author is writing by the seat of his pants” is that he seems to be doing it constantly. An alternative statement is that he’s just drawing what he thinks is cool and spinning a story out of it.

Oda famously came up with the Supernovas essentially on the spot during Sabody. It's hard to imagine the second half of One Piece without them but they were never part of the original plan. It's what makes weekly/monthly manga so interesting, you have the ability to get micro feedback that can be applied a few weeks after.

A friend of mine got me a Netflix gift card as a birthday gift two days ago (my birthday was weeks back) and it just hit me I’ll be able to watch the Scott Pilgrim anime which I’m now very excited for.

Incidentally, does anyone here have Netflix exclusive anime recommendations? I’ve never had Netflix myself until now. I’ve seen Little Witch Academia and two seasons of both Castlevania and Aggretsuko.
Edgerunners i would say.

We got a Teaser for Shin Kamen Rider from Anno in the form of a 1:1 remake of the opening

Doubt anything other than the costumes is final tho

Also here’s my physical Anime/Toku collection. Mainly have have watched the Gundams and Getters plus Big O, Amagi, Oh Edo, Bride is a mermaid, School rumble season 1; Squid Girl S1, and I’ve started some of the others like half of ultra Q and a few episodes of Ultraman

Thats a pretty fucking cool collection

nah you're good, I also don't exclusively read shounen battle shounen lol

and realized I should've put my list in the Manga thread anyway, but that one barely gets used
Honetsly both sound like they shoulda been merged together

lol, i don't exclusively look at all just niche shit y'know :p i fucked with ya boy kongming alot

Edgerunners i would say.
Thanks for a Netflix recommendation, but Cyberpunk and Edgerunners is on Fami’s banned content list so definitely not good to recommend or discuss here. If you got anything else though I’ll take it :)

I’ve been meaning to make a post here again for a while, since I wrapped up all of my big games for the year I’ve started watching anime again. I really loved watching the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime, it was awesome! My current focus is trying to finally finish watching Dragon Quest The Adventure of Dai. I was watching it very slowly when it was airing and have continued to watch an episode here and there since. I feel like I’ve been juggling it for too long now, so I’m eager to try to finish it up. I think the last episode I watched was 55 (Baran just seemingly exploded) so I’m a little more than halfway through. Fun show!

It's carried hard by Popp and the soundtrack imo but I had fun with it as well. Obviously pretty tropey considering the age of its source material but I think they did a decent job here.

Yeah I think it being tropey is why I’ve watched it on and off so much, but I do always enjoy it when I sit down to watch it. The characters and battles are generally good fun and yeah the music and animation add some good flair. Popp is cool for sure. I think I like Dai, Hyunckel, and Crocodine the most.

Speaking of tropes, I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of every time Hyunckel arrives to a fight late and everyone is just in awe with an oh shoot he’s here lol.

Looks like the new Symphogear project is actually going to be a film rather than a TV series. I would have preferred a new TV show, but I’m really excited to see whatever bonkers action set pieces they have for a movie. It’s going to be absurd.
