StarTopic Anime |ST| Is Captain Falcon more anime than Fire Emblem?

Probably gonna drop JJK after this season. It's been something I've been mostly watching on the treadmill but it's lacking in meaningful characterization or emotion to complement the high-octane action. The Shibuya arc got a ton of hype but I've been feeling pretty disappointed by it, and I don't consider myself to be particularly snobbish about battle shonen series. I dislike dropping series I've started but no point in engaging sunk cost fallacy.

I dropped the manga during the hiatus that happened during Shibuya

Gonna be honest as someone that keeps up with the manga: it’s totally fine to dip out of JJK after this season lol. Though I’d disagree that there’s a lack of meaningful characterization.

I will say this was one of my two favorite arcs of JJK the other being the school battle stuff from s1.

Getting back into anime. I swear I always take huge breaks. Continuing Spy x Family Part 2. It's definitely a bit worse than the first part, but I'm still enjoying it.
The manga becomes way more episodic around these sections, and as somebody else said earlier, future seasons would run into the same problems, and worse.

Also, watch Frieren, you cowards! Very chill anime (generally).

100 Girlfriends 9

Looking forward to seeing the rest of this arc animated. Not much to say about this particular episode other than they did the introduction of Hikari's mother well. She comes off as intimidating as she should.

Frieren Beyond Journey's End 10

When this episode continued to spend a large chunk of its run time focusing on Frieren's time with Flamme, I knew Aura was going to get absolutely clowned. That final segment was absolutely fantastic.

How can you call it chill, that elf blew a kiss onscreen. What a bawdy move! Jokes aside, Frieren has been an incredible adaptation.

Speaking of incredible adaptations, there’s also Undead Unluck, Dead Mount Death Play, Stardust Telepath, Shangri-la Frontier and 100 Girlfriends. I’m elated that these manga got a lot of attention and care from the studios, as they wouldn’t really shine with anything less.

Frieren Beyond Journey's End 11

I'm surprised Kraft didn't end up joining the party as a priest. A healer is the obvious empty spot in Frieren's party and they continue to not recruit one. That aside, I loved the finale of this episode. The discussion about Kraft's change in belief and the flashback to Heiter was wonderful. This is truly a special show.

Edit: Kraft is a Monk not a priest, I will give myself 10 lashes for this grave error.

The Apothecary Diaries 6-7

I was surprised to see the garden party storyline continue, until I remembered this was originally a LN. Makes sense in hindsight that each book would be a group of mysteries that tie back to a certain event or item like how the first 4 episodes used the poisonous makeup as a through line. The 9-14 year old concubine stuff was yikes though, I know it's accurate to the era, but still.

One of the most beautiful chapters of Frieren has been adapted. I’ve been waiting for it, and by the gods did Studio Madhouse deliver. I might be a little biased because I’m a sucker for good romances, and we got two of then this episode. Fern is this immaculate blend of tsun- and kuudere to Stark, and I have to agree withe Sein, I’m enjoying their teenage whirlwind antics. Then you have Frieren’s tragically late realization that Himmel was in love with her, a notion that the show had been building up since the very first episode. Bittersweet to the core.

Everyone, freaking watch Frieren.

100 Girlfriends 10

Hahari's va understood the assignment and nailed it. She nails both halves of the character perfectly. Also it's kinda funny in retrospect that (spoilers for future characterization from the manga) Rentaro asks Hahari if she's obsessed with babies, which she denies, though he was right on the money. Giga Chadtarou knows his gfs better then anyone even when he's meeting them for the first time

Apothecary Diaries 8

I wonder when Maomao is going to have some explain to her what the hair pin actually means. Fun little side quest mystery, though it didn't move the main story forward. The ending joke was pretty fantastic.

Frieren Beyond Journey's End 12

Ah so this is the source of the meme. Smug Frieren aside, this episode had two great halves. Loved the reveal that Himmel wasn't the chosen hero, but he still completed the quest. I also loved the explanation of Stark's backstory, and it's clear Fern x Stark will be a thing before this series is over, likely to contrast with Himmel x Frieren which the latter never understood based upon the suspicious ring that was shown.

Frieren is really unlike any show I've seen in recent memory with how it captures that sense of wistful, bittersweet nostalgia. It's a strangely comforting show.

The show’s great at linking Frieren’s past and current traveling parties. Episode 14 is probably one of the purest examples with how it drew parallels between the Fern-Stark and Himmel-Frieren pairings.

Caught up on last week's and today's episode of In Love With The Villainess and woof, dunno where we can possibly go from here in just one more episode. If this doesn't get another season, light novels here I come.

Yeah, I don’t think the anime will end at a good stopping point. I can only hope a second season has already been secretly greenlit, because otherwise… who thought it would be a good idea to kneecap the adaptation like this

I will say someone in the source material comments on the r/anime thread for this episode seems optimistic, so that's at least something.

Couldn't that have the opposite effect? If the anime overly ties things up in a nice bow in one episode it can risk feeling forced and contrived how a happy ending comes out. If that's what happened in the novels I don't fault the anime, but I'm surprised by how much anxiety this show is causing 1 episode from its finale.

Show about to end on the Berserk eclipse?
Lmaaaaoooo

I read the Berserk manga a few years ago, but because manga is so expensive I stopped right before the eclipse. I watched the Berserk 1997 anime last year, and that experience of having incomplete knowledge of both versions is actually super interesting. Because the manga starts differently and is also told from the future looking back at the past (which 1997 only sort of does and even then not really), you get some pretty interesting insights into the future that are totally cut out from the anime. At the same time, the anime at least adapts most (all?) of the eclipse, so you at least get something.

Because of this, in a way, the Berserk anime both sort of does and doesn't adapt more material than the equivalent amount of volumes.

Episodes 9 and 10 are finally showing what Undead Unluck is all about. It's been a blast reliving the manga and being able to note all the details and foreshadowing now that I know about later events. Plus, David Production is killing it with their animation and especially sound design. It sucks that UU is in Hulu jail, but anyone who can try it out, should!

I've started Undead Unluck expecting a cutesy comedy or a rather run off the mill battle shounen... but this show just keeps on subverting my expectations, it's a lot of fun! I'm watching with a couple friends week to week and basically every other week someone says "okay this just got a lot more interesting"

Undead Unluck I feel should also be super interesting for gamers, due to how the story/plot works.

Don't forget the that the greatest manga of all time is (still) getting its anime adaptation soon.

I don't think I've bounced off a manga harder then I did delicious in dungeon, I may give the anime another chance if it has a simuldub.

Frieren 13

On the one hand it feels logical that the party would obtain a priest. On the other hand between the lack of key art I've seen for this guy and his "I'm journeying with you for now" I guess he ends up only being around temporarily. The fact the episode also dragged and hyper focused on recruiting Sein made it the weakest episode of the show. I actually like Sein so I hope I'm wrong, but if s1 is planned to be 26 episodes I'd expect Sein to be shown with Frieren's party in all the promo art if he's gonna be around for half the season.

I've been enjoying it a lot. Just a good, fun show with likable characters.

100 Girlfriends 11

The special ED was absolutely hilarious. Anime continues to take the already great source material and elevate it to new heights. The 4th wall is so destroyed it might as well never existed.

Finished up Pluto just now. I think overall it was very good but it's difficult for me to really succinctly sum it up in such a way. Really was a tale of two halves I think. I really thought the first half was great. Great individual character stories with a strong underlying plot that I was really looking forward to seeing developed down the stretch. I think the second half stumbled a lot though, with moments of greatness but also possibly even more moments of tripping up on its own somewhat annoying repeated exposition dumps and heavy-handed theming. A lot of moments down the stretch where I think a little less being said and definitely less scene swapping would've done it some good. Still happy to have watched it, though. Good overall.

I'll be continuing The Apothecary Diaries and Frieren next season. Will probably drop Shangri-La Frontier. I liked it at first but at this point I feel like I'm forcing myself to keep up with it.

New stuff I'm pretty sure I'm going to watch is The Dangers in My Heart s2, Dungeon Meshi, and Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic. I think A Sign of Affection, 7th Time Loop, and Sengoku Youko are generally well-liked source material so I'll probably check out the anime for those even though I don't know much about them.

I'm interested in Tsukimichi but I'll have to watch the first season before and see how I like it. I watched the first two seasons of Classroom of the Elite earlier this year and thought it was sometimes entertaining/sometimes obnoxious so I'll probably check out the new season of that. I may try to catch up with Undead Unluck at some point this season too.

I really liked Tsukimichi and the dub is solid. There’s also this hilarious inversion of his main companions being
super bosses he accidentally takes under wing. Oh and he’s ugly and shunned by the world despite just being earth average. While he has buffs he’s got a lot of drawbacks a normal Isekai lead wouldn’t have to deal with

I’ve continued to watch Dragon Quest Dai these past 2.5 weeks as I’m determined to finally finish it (perhaps before the year ends?). I hit a really good stretch with the final battles with Hadlar and his royal guard so I got especially hooked today where I watched seven episodes. The final battle there and the stuff after it was awesome. I especially enjoyed the Avan Cross Strash, the Giga Strash, and Hadlar’s multiple final dying moments. I ended tonight on episode 75 which has the fourth ending theme so I know I’m definitely in the final stretch now.

I'm watching Frieren and liking it very much :) The show has a nice relaxing aura and atmosphere while providing good dialogue and interesting themes. Love the characters, although I'm so-so on Stark as of now.

Dai is a lot of fun. It's not the most original premise or super subversive... but it has a lot of heart and a genuinely fun cast. It knows what it is and isn't ashamed of that :D Also pretty good production values, proving that Toei has some really talented people working for them!

Yeah! It’s reliably a ton of fun and well put together all around. The big moments all land as they should which is always cool. Great show!

This season of Jujutsu Kaisen should have one, two episodes left tops. They have a pretty perfect set up for it and it'd get people excited for S3 (in 2 years). I've definitely enjoyed it but I'm somewhat dreading how they're going to do the next major arc. The entire set up is needlessly convoluted but there's some good stuff there.

Once that is done and I'm on holidays for the remainder of the year I will finally have enough time to continue Frieren. And maybe give MF Ghost another chance, though the weird MF Angels stuff is pretty offputting.

I've started to catch up with the Manga of JJK and I have no idea how they're gonna handle the next couple arcs tbh. Like, the whole Culling Game arc is just a massively convoluted tournnament arc that doesn't even have a real cut-off point. Though given next season won't be until 2025, I could see them maybe waiting for everything to wrap up cause I legit think there's not all that much story left at this point.

Obviously you make a trilogy of movies like the rumors for Demon Slayer's final arc.

That part of the show absolutely sucks. Does nothing but take away from the races.

I'm honestly interested in how the anime will tackle it. It's a daunting task, to be sure.

Yeah, that streak of battles was super good. Hadlar himself is phenomenal. Grows from being a maniacal overlord to genuinely terrifying villain with unbreakable conviction.

Prelim as always. And forgot to keep Frienen on there. But here we are
How are we at a new season of anime already?!

It's already time for Delicious in Dungeon! With Frieren continuing we'll have two great fantasy anime running at the same time.

I half expected, half hoped that the author would tackle that topic head on and show how exploitative it is but sadly everything involving Ren and the angels is just weird and creepy.

Ideally some of the set up for all of that would be simplified or greatly deemphasized in some way so the fights and character moments get to shine. Easier said than done though.

For what it's worth, the MF Angels were an editorial mandate. Shigeno-sensei himself only wanted to focus on the racers.

I hope that's the case. They can't translate all the details about the setup 1:1 anyway, it just wouldn't work in anime format.

I know I said "make it 3 movies" earlier as a joke, but I do expect some of the final arc of JJK to be a film. In particular I wouldn't be surprised if (real as manga spoilers don't click if not current)
Gojo vs Sukuna is the end of 1 movie with the rest of the finale being a second film or a final season depending upon how long it is. Gojo vs Sukuna is such a crazy spectacle I can see the anime team wanting a film budget to go all out
