StarTopic Anime |ST| Is Captain Falcon more anime than Fire Emblem?

Attack on Titan finale is a godamn 10/10.

For years manga readers saying that anime only people will hate the ending. How fucking wrong they were.

The big issue is that AOT is an edgelord series aimed at 12 year olds with no depth and those people got incredibly mad when Eren looked pathetic in the ending.

The ending isn't much worse than the rest of the series because the entire series is all-time bad (probably the worst popular manga of all time other than Boruto and Dragonball), but

-The entire ending hinges on just incredibly extreme misogyny
-The world building is all-time bad and every background character is such a strawman that it's hard to feel anything about anything that happened
-The series' time travel rules are incoherent and cause Eren to have no actual motivation and thus everything in the series happened because... It's unclear why.

The last part is pretty important because "What is Eren doing, why is he doing it???" was the focus of 30 chapters and the answer was "I don't know because the time travel rules don't make any sense in this series."

They threw away any potential world building by having all of this time hyping up what Eren's mysterious plan was so every character off island and outside of Germany ends up being this incredibly over the top racist shown in half a panel.

How would you answer the question of
Why did Eren eat his mother

Attack on Titan is definitely one of the few series I'd give a 10/10.

The whole premise, development of the story, the foreshadowing EVERYTHING has been so good.
Like I wouldn't consider myself a fan of the characters themselves, BUT THE STORY + the role they play in it was so so good, I'm so glad it got a good adaptation!

Still remember reading the manga and thinking the anime of this would deffo pop off. I'm glad it did! It's been a good run.

I deffo wanna revisit it once a few years have passed.

AOT's ending was frequently compared to GOT because AOT is a GOT clone, but AOT's ending is much more like Watchmen HBO where the series suddenly realizes it has no idea what its universe's rules are and starts to resolve plots with rules that make no sense at all.

Eren eating his mother so that he was filled with enough hatred to brain wash his father into eating a bunch of children so that he could have the power to destroy the world while knowing that he would regret destroying the world just straight up makes no sense under any time travel rules.

AOT was much less disappointing than Watchmen HBO though because Watchmen HBO was a good show before Jon showed up (and then it completely shit itself) whereas AOT was extremely bad for its entire run.

I can't speak to how the anime did the ending (haven't watched yet), but I remember thinking the manga ending was weak due to being a
A less interesting version of the zero requiem.

100 Girlfriends 5

Combining the two Eiai chapters into one made a ton of sense for the adaptation. The anime hit all the main points while also adding new scenes that helped to flesh out the date. Also think it's a good decision to end episodes with the "here is my next gf" bit as opposed to starting the next weeks episode with it like the manga does.

Putting Dragon Ball in the same sentence as Boruto is wild

I hate Dragonball so much, it's just the bottom of the bottom of the barrel in terms of writing and art and is full of constant sexual assault and harassment.

"What if Power Rangers had a pedophile character and a bunch of other characters that weren't any better" is basically just Dragonball.

Warning, don’t read/watch anything from the 80’s then. Was a huge issue in most media from that era

You have no idea how much worse other series are than Dragon Ball in this department lol

It stands out very badly in Dragon Ball because nothing ever happens in Dragon Ball because it's aimed at small children who can't handle unhappy endings, but this makes all the sexual harassment way worse.

My Hero Academia is even worse about this (Midnight is a worse character than Master Roshi and the series is even explicitly about the importance of role models), but MHA's writing is slightly better and its art is far better so idk. Dragon Ball just has no redeeming characteristics.

Whatever happened to "keep it cordial" 👀

If you don't like Dragon Ball and/or AoT, that's fine but don't just shit on somebody's favourite like that. Especially if it's ill-informed and exaggerated.

Calm down on the hyper aggressiveness. Discussing flaws can be good conversation but flanderizing them just leads to flaming.

Dragonball is in a weird place really. It came off the first generation of true “modern” Shonen of Fist of the Northstar and Kinnikuman(both having their flaws, the the latter you can pin on it being a literal pair of high schoolers doing their first serialized work and their editor not having their back or guiding them as well as he should have). Toriyama came off a successful comedy series and decided to another and his editors over time guiding him into a heavier action focus. So he riffed off certain aspects of his predecessors(Kinnikuman did power levels, tournament arcs, grevious foes turned into ally’s, among others all before it). A lot of series in those days started as no or small arc focus in their one shots before serialization.
Also due to the time era certain behavior wasn’t considered as taboo, and as is true of every country there are many things that were regionally ok but globally a no go. Now yes a ton of stuff hasn’t aged well. But overall it’s still a fun action adventure at its core. also note western movies and tv from that era are also full of inappropriate behavior. Doesn’t mean it’s ok but you do have to consider the framing.

(Tho the limits of violence and sexuality in manga were pushed/restablished by the wild works of Go Nagai who in the end allowed for a wider scope of stories to be told)

Considering this is an anime thread, obligatory "nobody watched Dragon Ball". Early Dragon Ball is the worst part of the series even without the extremely dated elements.

i've heard a lot of people make this exact comparison. a friend of mine spoiled the ending for me by telling me that "eren lelouch'd himself" but it just didn't seem at all interesting/produce a satisfying conclusion

like, the ending itself just seemed to be incredibly polarizing? i haven't watched the anime's finale yet but i'm pleasantly surprised that i've seen a lot of people praise the anime's ending considering the overall reception to the manga's ending

I’m curious about the anime ending for Attack on Titan too. Just have to wait for my friends to be available lol.

Manga readers obviously have higher iq's then anime watchers hence the better reception by anime only viewers :p

In all seriousness the anime likely makes the final action scene a lot more epic then the manga. AoT's manga art was always it's weakest element.

I'm stunned by the positive reaction to the AoT finale. I'm not interested in arguing opinions though so I guess I'm glad for anime-onlys. I thought the ending was a disaster on par with GoT Season 8.

Tbh I am one of the few who didn't dislike the ending in the manga either, so heck yeah i enjoyed the anime version.

But I am indeed also not here to change anyones opinion on it, I for one, am glad I did get to experience a solid story from start to finish. :D

Tried the first season of AoT, didn't really catch me. Too bleak for my taste. Then I read about how it ends and lost all remaining interest :D
I honestly think the Game of Thrones comparison is simultaneously apt and inaccurate, given we don't know how much the book's ending differs from the show's ending, while the ending of AoT can be fully blamed on the author.

I disappear for a few months and come back to find a war zone!

I started Frieren tonight. I’m only two episodes in, but what a wonderful show so far. Right from the off, it feels special.

The setup is great, as is the dialogue and of course, the music. Evan Call’s Violet Evergarden score often brought tears to my eyes and I can feel his delicate touch here already.

My 86 thought piece will arrive in here eventually, but being a dad is bloody hard work - who knew my days of relaxation and sleep were over?!

I haven’t dug in to the second season of Spy Family yet, but I’ll get to it soon.

Finally got around to watching the anime finale for Attack on Titan, along with my sisters, girlfriend and friends. Only two of us had read the manga, and the anime-onlies unanimously thought the anime ending was incredible. And I think I understand why— the art, animation, music and voicework help tons in delivering an emotional gravitas that was, in my opinion, absent from the manga. The anime also tweaked the writing and flow of some scenes, so while I still had problems with many of its plot points, the anime ending was definitely an improvement over the manga’s.

100 Girlfriends 6

Rentaro has finally begun to show off his super powers to do everything to protect his family. The anime continues to greatly elevate the source material.

I have additional thoughts on the Attack on Titan finale: the anime changed one of Armin's lines and it comes off as much, much better than what he said in the manga. All in all, I think I like it more than I don't. But it's not even part of the top ten anime I've watched this season.

My current AOTS is Apothecary Diaries. As a healthcare professional, I might be getting more than the usual enjoyment from Maomao teaching the stuck-up denizens of the imperial palace about how their drama and politics won't help solve diseases and problems.

There are quite a few anime that could feasibly take the top spot from it though. Frieren: Journey's End, Undead Unluck, Shangri-la Frontier, SHY and 100 Girlfriends are all stellar adaptations. I've also been enjoying Tearmoon Empire, Overtake, 16-bit Sensation, Firefighter Daigo and Under Ninja a lot. Ancient Magus' Bride, Goblin Slayer, Dr. Stone, Spy X Family, The Eminence in Shadow, Faraway Paladin: Lord of the Rust Mountains, Captain Tsubasa, Girlfriend Girlfriend and Dead Mount Death Play are great followups to their first seasons too.

And if you think that's a lot, oh man, there's still Helck, Dark Gathering and Zombie 100 from last season. Plus we still have Scott Pilgrim getting ready to drop in and join the party! Again: this season is STACKED.

If we only get one season of I'm In Love With The Villainess, it'll be the biggest travesty of all time. This is some of the best storytelling I have ever seen across any medium.
I suppose there's always the light novels and manga if we don't...

Frieren Beyond Journey's End 1-2

Not sure why I took so long to watch this, but man my emotions weren't ready for this. Show is fantastic, love the relationship between Frieren and Fern.

German-speaking bros, between Pluto and Frieren we've been really winning when it comes to random German words being used as first names. (I have not yet seen Frieren)

Frieren 6-8

We need more anime that are just Gandalf going around and absolutely clowning people. It's clear the author knows what people expect from both shonen series and fantasy series and is playing on those expectations masterfully.

Series sets up an obvious group of 3 baddies for our 3 heroes to fight, with the obvious strong one for Frieren to fight, and the obvious melee guy and magic girl for Stark and Fern to fight respectively... right? Nope, Frieren gives that task to her followed while she does the Gandalf thing of fighting an even bigger battle nobody realized was on the horizon.

Series sets up an obvious "If we give demons a chance we can learn to coexist", and then doubly in both a flashback to Himmel and in current day beats into our head "no, demons are just lying monsters who all need to be killed"

Between Frieren and Faraway Paladin, it’s a good season for anime watchers who also enjoyed The Lord of the Rings and other high fantasy media.

Drugs are good m'kay, except for m*th, never do m*th.

Frieren 9

The kids prove themselves worthy of going on the same journey the hero took. Loved Stark no selling the demon's final attack and just deleting her from existence. Seeing Fern's scary attitude on a villain was also a treat. Next week should be the main course of Frieren clowning Aura and I can't wait.

I see we have now entered the post-Kusuri phase of 100 Girlfriends. There is a reason Common Sense keeps a close watch on this show.

Speaking of drug-loving mad scientists, Maomao from Apothecary Diaries is still slaying it. She managed to wrangle herself a short vacation lol.

Today's episode of In Love With The Villainess is the first time I've heard the word "tsundere" spoken aloud, and I've been pronouncing it wrong this whole time.
Wait you didn’t watch Endo and Kobyashi’s Villainess live? They said it repeatedly in that one(it was great).
