small correction: Donkey Kong. Not Donkey Kong Country. "Donkey Kong" is getting a new game in a few months (Mario vs DK remake, which in 2024 is basically a new game like how Mario RPG is a new game to everyone but a few middle aged nerds like those who post here [points at self] who played the SNES game). Donkey Kong is inherently an extension (or obviously actually the origin point) of the Mario IP and was featured in the massively popular Mario movie.
I see your point, especially in regards to the movie connection, but both the movie depiction and theme park are very directly themed around Country imo

mario vs donkey kong is a remake of a predominantly mario game that has donkey kong in it. it doesn't come anywhere close to promoting the donkey kong brand
I mean it's literally an evolution of the original Donkey Kong. Why are we arguing about this :D. Obviously nobody is going "wooo a new donkey kong game!" about this, the entire point is that it's a new release as part of the Donkey Kong IP, the first one since the Donkey Kong-themed expansion for Mario + Rabbids and the Tropical Freeze re-release in 2018 (plus the whole thing with the DK bit being a key section of the movie). We can't just say "there has been no DK since 2014" when there has (and is coming up soon).

I see your point, especially in regards to the movie connection, but both the movie depiction and theme park are very directly themed around Country imo
Absolutely, by necessity since that's where most of its identity and characters come from. Still worth making the distinction of DK Country being a specific line of platforming games in the larger franchise-sphere. Plus I'd argue as soon as you see girders, it's directly calling back to arcade DK.

There's been some DLC speculation happening in the Pikmin community due to some images appearing on the Japanese site of scenarios not reproducible in the game. What are the chances of a multiplayer-focused DLC announcement happening at the TGA's or a Feb Direct? When you think about there haven't been much EPD projects without content updates, maybe true co-op wasn't in the base game because Nintendo thinks it's enough added value to save it for an expansion.

Please, please, please let there be DLC for Dandori Battle mode!! It’s got less than half the content and features of Bingo Battle from Pikmin 3…

i could see Nintendo doing DLC for Pikimin 4(they did for Pikimin 3, why not for Pikimin 4 too)

Pikmin 4 getting DLC would be yet another example of me totally misreading the direction of Nintendo's development philosophy. Throw it on the pile I guess.

That being said, after the sales results of 4 I hope that this turns out to be true.

I had kinda felt like Pikmin 4 was a "leave it all on the field" scenario; like, there's stuff in there that felt like it could have been saved for post-launch if they'd wanted. So I'd be surprised if they do have something more for that game.

That said, I'd be down for some smaller stuff like co-op or maybe new game+ coming as a free update

I was honestly surprised that DLC hadn't been announced for Pikmin 4. I thought it would at least get a free update with some additional content for the multiplayer or something.

Pikmin 4 dlc will be announced at the Game Awards. That’ll be Nintendo’s small announcement. They’ll have one more bigger announcement.

i really wonder what happened with epd 1, i was looking through the credits for epd 2 games and it seems they merged it, but epd 2 still is called as such so i wonder what is epd 1 now after 3 years

we discussed this here in the summer, came to the same inconclusive conclusion, especially in regards to Hitoshi Yamagami's absence in the past few years and lack of any sort of retirement or resignation announcement. With his second in command (Genki Yokota) now in the producer role at EPD2, all those external production/co-direction projects (Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Kirby, etc) have merged under the EPD2 banner, as you said.

They might be cooking on original stuff or maybe they're somehow involved in something related to the hardware refresh but nobody knows.

So I was making a post on Kyoto Report about Namco's 3D Action Game and came across these new job openings. They must have only been added in the last day or so.

"At S Studio, you will be responsible for developing consumer games that will be commissioned by Nintendo."

Which led me to this:

"BANDAI NAMCO Studio 2/S Studio is a studio that specializes in contracted development projects within the company."

Looks like we'll see more Namco support on first party titles in the future.

Game awards, Nintendo always has some kind of announcement and DLC for 4 would work well

It seems like the 3D Action Game listings themselves have also been moved under Studio 2 / Studio S:

This also stands out on one of the new listings though:

So it seems they have two projects in production for Nintendo (one for Studio 2 one for Studio S? don't quite get the split there):
  • 3D Action Game (possibly a remaster / remake?)
  • 2D Action Game
That sounds familiar to what EPD Tokyo have hired for but i'm more inclined to assume the 2D game in this case is Smash?

kid icarus Uprising or a older Star Fox for 3D action game, Super Smash Bros 6 for 2D action game?

I forget: did something happen for us to assume that the 3D action game is a remake of Kid Icarus Uprising, or is it just a widespread hope among the community? Because we've been guessing that it's KIU from the moment the first job listings went up, long before Sakurai mentioned wanting a remake in his web series.

Bandai Namco are definitely working on the next Smash Bros. They've proven their salt with the last two games, and keeping the studio means they still maintain their resources and knowledge pool without having to start from scratch. We'll be seeing their work again on Switch 2 I'm sure.

This interview is also incredibly insightful:

The listed staff:
  • Yukihiro Taniguchi
    • Background Lead for Studio 2 Production 1 and Studio S Production W.
    • Listed prior works: Ridge Racer Series, Go Vacation, Smash 4, Smash Ultimate.
  • Megumi Kagisaki
    • Lead Artist for Studio S Production W.
    • Listed prior works: Go Vacation, Soulcailbur VI, Touch My Katamari, Smash 4, Smash Ultimate, Mario Kart Tour.
  • Tomoyasu Kamiyama (previously Chiho Kamiyama)
    • Background Model Artist for Studio S Production W.
    • Listed prior works: Tekken series, Soulcalibur series, Go Vacation, Smash 4, Smash Ultimate.
  • Toshikatsu Terashima
    • Background Model Artist / Supervisor for Studio 2 Production 6
    • Listed prior works: Ridge Racer series, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS, Mario Kart Tour.
The main trend I see is that everyone listed as Studio S has previously worked on Smash, while the one person solely credited as Studio 2 did not.

I’m guessing Smash 6 will be holiday 2026 (or later if delayed). It’ll be similar to Smash Wii U which took two years after the system’s launch to release.

We didn't know before that Namco has a dedicated studio for Nintendo conctracted projects, did we?
We knew but there wasn't a proper associated team. The Smash team was cobbled together from various dev teams including Tales, Ace Combat, Soul Calibur and Go Vacation while the Mario Kart staff wasn't properly credited aside from Mario Sports Superstars.

I'm pretty doubtful they're moving Smash Bros to Unreal 5, lol (the job ad constantly asks for UE4 experience)

This could just be Tekken stages as Tekken 8 runs on Unreal 5?

If this has to be Nintendo, just pick a random smaller scale Nintendo side scroller without a dev. Wario Land from Namco time.

This could just be Tekken stages?

I wouldn't necessarily refer to Tekken as "side-view", but regardless every Studio S lisitng mentions "developing consumer games commissioned by Nintendo"; the Designer / Artist positions say they are looking for someone who is "interested in developing contract projects for Nintendo" while the egineer listing is specifically asking for "experience in developing programs for Nintendo platforms".

Unless Nintendo comissioned Tag Tournament 3 as a Switch 2 exclusive is absolutely is not Tekken, lol.

I'm pretty doubtful the 2D UE5 game is for Nintendo as it doesn't say "Nintendo commissioned" in the job ad. But it could be and they just left that language out as those things are random.

Why was the 3D action game assumed to be a remake? Hiring for a level designer lowers the odds of it being a remake vs a new title.

what else are they gonna run on? Unity? the engine that was used for Smash Ultimate has been depreciated. Bamco moved to UE5 and eventually a new in-house engine (if that's even still alive)
My only hope is they better their rollback cause Tekken 8 is not promising 😬

There's a lot more than assets that need to be brought over.

UE5 also offers basically no advantages to a 2D game.

UE5 offers the same advantages as UE4 for a 2D game, and that is to be a standard tool that allows easy support and hiring people without having to undergo prior training.

With assets I talk about everything, from graphics to code (which in the end will be C or some derivative, so if it is planned from the beginning of the project it can be put into Unreal, game studios constantly change engines between releases, recycling and moving assets and codes, and it has never been an impediment)

In any case, many times people are hired who understand X engine even if it is not used internally, just because that engine is a standard and has similarities with the internal ones.

that's not how engines work

well then maybe they aren't porting Ultimate
obviously they will be making a sequel, not a port of ultimate. Even so, it is obvious that they will recycle elements of Ultimate, from codes to Assets, but an engine change I doubt will pose any problem if it is planned from the beginning of development. They are not going to be the first to make a sequel in a new engine, reusing everything possible from the previous game.

Problems when changing engines usually come for 2 reasons: the first is when they do it halfway through development and the second is when an engine is poorly documented and does not allow people with experience in it.

This is interesting. So Pokkén and New Pokemon Snap weren't developed by the same team of smash at BNS huh? BNS is involved in so much work on nintendo be it lead or support its kind of crazy. They are like koei tecmo, who surprisingly havent been in a lot of games since 2019/2020

Every other job ad says "commissioned for Nintendo," but I'm saying the UE5 side view one specifically does not.

Considering the listing is still under Studio S / Studio 2, specifically for outside collaborations, and the listing itself mentions “subcontractors who are collaborating companies”, it still wouldn’t be Tekken or any internal Namco series.

You are right about it being the only one to not explicitly name Nintendo though, which means it could reasonably be a project with another publisher; but given all of the listed past projects are Nintendo titles, and the other listings all name Nintendo regardless, I feel it’s a fairly safe assumption.

For people who speak Japanese, is the language here best translated as "side view' or "2D" and is "side view" common language. Because Tekken is a 3D fighter with a side view.

Pokken 2 that was solely a side view game would be interesting (Pokken 1 is a combination of like Tekken and Jump Force)

Oh, this was assumed to be a remaster/remake because a bunch of job ads came out at once and one said "remastering 3D backgrounds"

Could be multiple separate projects or a remake that includes a lot of new content (like a Twilight Princess remake with more side content?)

that was sarcasm, I've always been team reboot. very little recycled elements. especially since many of Ultimate's assets were improved versions of old assets already
