Pre-Release Super Mario RPG remake — Pre-release Discussion Thread (UPDATE: developed by ArtePiazza)

Gonna need a proper translation from this Nintendo JP article: is this saying there's now a stone in the remake that's even more special than the Shiny Stone you use to unlock Culex's door?

EDIT: Yeah, that seems to be EXACTLY what it's saying. HERE WE GO

Noticed the stone mention too; VERY interesting.

The Japanese website also has a hidden secret on it now, see if you can find it...

You can input a code to unlock some free wallpapers! Not going to incur the wrath of Nintendo by posting them myself of course.

I wish the artstyle of the game itself looked better. Everything else looks great, but the graphics just kinda seem... cheap? I don't know. It's especially weird because the cutscenes look absolutely phenomenal, but then you start playing and the artstyle is so bland. I wish it was more grand in scope and depth. Not to mention the character models look pretty bad (yes I know it's based on the original model proportions but it still looks bad anyways, like why do the Toads look like that).

The artstyle is great. It's the perfect mix of the original artstyle and modern aesthetic. Nothing about it or the character models looks bad or cheap.

I think the middle ground is to its detriment. It would be a lot better if it was either pixelated or fully modern, but it's neither. It kinda comes across as knockoff Mario to me in terms of the character models and how the world is presented. Like I'm sorry, but the majority of the character models are ugly outside of a few great designs (namely Mallow, Geno, Birdo, and Bowser). They should have fully updated everything.

Pretty much the only thing I'm left wishing for is something more in the way of SE's other upgraded ports/remakes like an extra dungeon or two.

But this is all looking very, very good, otherwise!

Beyond pumped for this game. Got the vouchers on Japan eshop, two for $66. Mario and Wonder and this for $66 has to be the best deal I've ever gotten.
same here i got the japanese eshop NSO vouchers as well , $91 in my country's currency after deducting 475yen worth of gold coins
$46 for Super Mario RPG and $45 for Another Code Collection

Agree to disagree. The middle ground is why is perfect. Leaning to far in either direction misses the point imo. Especially in the case of using a pixel aesthetic since the original was never pixelated, it was 3D isometric.

So what's the secret stuff they teased on the website? And I see talk of new features like changing the music arrangements? Anything else new they announce? I don't speak japanese.

Kind of hoping the new secret boss is Culex but in N64/PS1 era polygons.
That’s what I think it might be given how much the Japanese dialogue for Culex harps so much about facing beings with a third dimension. Makes sense for Culex to return in 3D both as a natural escalation given the story and as a way of being able to model the boss in a more consistent style with the rest of the game.

Glad to see the confirmation of mid battle party swapping - kinda looks like it’s a midway between non-Quick Change and Quick Change a la PM64/TTYD, in that once you swap in a party member from reserves, you can’t freely swap in/out that party member again for their turn, but otherwise can act as normal.

The specific Culex related bits in the trailers and on the Topics page, along with the mention of an extra special Stone, are very intriguing like everyone else has pointed out. Hrm, I wonder if this is related to a post game side quest or something similar…

I can't read Japanese, is there any mention on how the 2 modes differ from each other? Do enemies just have less health or is the new 'all enemies take damage with a perfect action command' part of the easier mode? I kind of hope there is an option to turn that off.

Nothing beyond the following courtesy of DeepL / Google Translate:

Enjoy Mode (iirc this is localised as Breezy Mode)
This mode has easy battle difficulty. Click here if you want to progress through the story quickly.

Normal Mode
This mode has normal battle difficulty. Click here if you want to enjoy challenging battles. (Someone actually fluent in Japanese can comment whether 手ごたえのあるバトル might make more sense transliterated as ‘responsive battle’ or not)

エンジョイモード
バトルの難易度がやさしいモードです。ストーリーをサクサク進めたい人はこちら。

ノーマルモード
バトルの難易度がふつうのモードです。手ごたえのあるバトルを楽しみたい人はこちら。

The way the battle changes are framed, I’m assuming all of Perfect Timing AOE, Action Gauge, Triple Moves, and Party Switch are innate to the battle system and not a difficulty toggle (at least from the outset).

As someone that never played the SNES game, it's going to drive me crazy to see all the crazy parts of this game and wonder if it's new or not. I assume most of it isn't new, but still.

For instance, was the part with the 8 bit Mario sprite in the original?

Yeah, that was in the original.

Kind of surprised they kept 8 bit mario instead of changing it to the original Mario RPG sprite.

The Smithy Gang's lieutenants are all supposed to be named after weapons; Bowyer and Axem Rangers wear their names on their sleeve. Changing Yaridovich's name to Speardovich makes more sense to maintain the localized naming convention.

Mack might get changed as well, since while his name technically has a knife association, it's via an obscure reference to a 1920s music drama.
Hey I was right. GVG has a 40 minute long preview discussion and the footage shows that Mack's new name is Claymorton.

They’re already in Mario Wonder 🤭

Wonder who the new superboss is and if a random boss or it could be tied to a sequel

Considering the leak of how Culex looks in the remake
since the normal fight used the classic pixel art, maybe the super boss rematch will be culex in actual 3D

Has it been confirmed it’s a rematch and/or the new stone is related to him?

I've only seen the leaked clip that Nintendo deleted showing what I presume to be the normal fight with Culex. We know the other bosses have rematches, and it would be weird for the original super boss to end up the "weakest" super boss in the game compared to the rematch fights.

Maybe the new shiny stone is a fifty crystal that makes him look in 3D 😆

What leaked clip? I saw Culex at the end of the Japanese commercial that they uploaded and that one is still up. Was it just that or was there more?

New overview trailer and commercials.

God, the amount of effort they've put into this is overwhelming. Just a couple of years ago, people would have just called you crazy if you even brought up the idea of a remake, let alone one with this much love poured into it.

People have been waiting years for something like this, some I know almost 2 decades. This has been a very surprisingly long journey for so many people. I'm sure some people here are aware of the old rumors, but an SMRPG Remake happening in a similar vein to Links Awakening has been floating around since very early 2020, and the amount of stuff that has happened since then is crazy. From people being convinced Geno was in Smash Ultimate due to multiple rumors at the time pointing to it (Stuff I still personally believe, for the most part), from the constant speculation in 2020 about when we could see the remake and stuff for Mario's 35th Anniversary. The constant burns of Geno not being "the next character". Geno getting Mii'd during Sephiroth's wave. The time between the Smash X ARMS reveal in March, and Steve's reveal in October made a lot of people convinced that Geno would be "77", due to "Seven Stars". While it was crazy speculation, it was fun, and I'm very happy that people are finally on the other side of all that and that it finally paid off.

Some people were so unbelievably cynical about the entire thing, though, ever since the rumors first popped up. Wishful thinking and fun, out-there theories constantly got made fun of by people who took them seriously. A lot of people were harassed for believing in it all. It was honestly heart-breaking seeing people get harassed over stuff like that. Some people really need to seek validation through video game discourse, I guess.

This all might sound corny and such, but I'm just so happy the developers clearly had as much passion for this game as the fans do. Full-blown CGI cutscenes, Triple-moves, the amount of details all of the models have, they didn't have to do any of that. I'm pretty sure if they just rereleased the original game for 60 dollars, people would have still bought it. But they did put in that effort. It's unreal to be seeing it right now, and it's even more unreal that it's coming out in 2 weeks.

just watched the japanese final trailer and nintendolife's preview and wowwie zowwie i am EXCITED.

i wasn't even born when the original came out so i will be going into this completely new but, i think i'm more excited than i was for wonder - and that's sayin' somethin'. the writing and scene direction look so charming and hilarious and i personally feel the art direction is perfect. the lighting looks amazing and almost like you're playing in a storybook or something? so cool.

how long is the original game, btw? is this something like a 40+ hour RPG or less?

According to this:

Less than that

thanks! were the mini games shown off in the japanese trailer in the OG?
Content-wise, this appears to have everything the original did. The amount of net-new content is likely a very small percentage of the experience unless they are really keeping things under wraps beyond things like the boss rematches and apparent new superboss.

I always liked Mack’s name, but I definitely don’t hate “Claymorton.” It’s interesting how they’re making some things more faithful to the Japanese script while retaining other elements from Woolsey’s script. At about 2:05 here, you can see that Toad still has his bazooka line!

I saw tweets were deleted and thought it was an accidental posting. I didn't see the video you posted.

Literally the ONLY thing I was worried about when it came to the new script. And it's still here! Hooray for the newest addition to the "spoony bard" club!
