Why does this matter?
Why?

If its non-internal its easy for a partner to work on it, not to mention recurring has a bit easier onboarding.
I'm not going to pretend like I understand the technical mumbo-jumbo of any of this, so I'll admit in my case it's mostly about vibes.
I know it sounds stupid, but games made with a custom engine feel more "cohesive" - it's like the engine is specialised and optimised for each and every game, while commercial engines like Unity and Unreal just feel very... samey. Not sure how to explain it exactly, but when you look at a game you can tell that it was made with Unity or (especially) Unreal because it has a distinctive look that many games powered with those engines share. I know that in theory a talented team would be able to reduce or completely remove that look and yet so many AAA games (not all, but most) have it, so what gives?

Also, there's the fact that both Unity and Epic seem like piece of shit companies and I don't like them or how much the entire industry seems to be relying on them.

Sure, games developed in the same engine can have shared quirks, but a game developed in Unity isn't inherently going to be lacking in polish or effort next to a game built on an internal engine.

Game engines are frameworks, you as the dev determine how things turn out. Sure some games look samey (looking at Bandai ue4 games lol) but for example look at: Pokemon BDSP, CupHead and FE Engage, they were all Unity, but they are all very different looking.

Custom engines come about for a number of reasons (budget, cost, targets, vision, etc.). And yeah Epic and Unity suck no question but their software is popular because its easier to get into it and the vast library of documentations making it viable for newcomers and veterans.

a lot of that just isn't true anymore. custom engines can run like dog shit (Pokemon) commercial engines can look unique (Arc System Works). this is a lot of outdated nonsense
 
John talking about performance issues is making me worried. Inconsistent framerate kills my enjoyment of a game and I hope this isn't another one of those cases where the original game runs better than the remake. :/

Square being behind this remake doesn't feel right. It's being positioned as a pure 1st party Nintendo game. When's the last time Square did that kind of work for Nintendo?
On that note, I got the latest Star Ocean game on Switch. Square has been putting out good content on Nintendo's current platform.
 
Is it possible that it is being done by Grezzo. They are former SE employees and their last major project was the Miitopia port.
 
I think if SE was developing this, we surely would have heard it by now? They would want both the credit and use it as a marketing point.
 
Kinda seems like all the numbers were rebalanced. Maybe they made the base game a little bit harder and added an easy mode.

Typically, do the companies who made a remake get revealed before release? I know Grezzo was confirmed to make links awakening and Wayforward was confirmed to have developed advanced wars, but I’m not sure about some others. If the company behind a remake IS typically announced before release, why are people speculating Grezzo/ NDcube?
 
I honestly feel like this was prob developed internally at Nintendo
Square: has said nothing about the remake or developing it
Grezzo: has been making Zelda games fro a while, not announced to be working on it yet which I feel like they would’ve been if they actually did develop it
NDcube: after Mario party superstars this feels like a decent possibility, but I still feel like it would’ve been announced by know if it were them
Camelot: too high quality to be them

depends on the company and the agreement. some times we don't get the dev until much later like release
 
NDCUBE has never worked on a project that wasn't party genre related(if not Mario Party specifically) and I can't see Nintendo ever letting them do so.

I'm aware. Maybe they wanted to take on something else? Maybe Nintendo asked them to? Things can change.

Not to offend, but I feel like this remake would be far worse if this really was the first time NDcube made a non party game. Like it took them 5 Mario Party games before they got a hang of things, I doubt they would get Mario RPG right from the jump
 
Used to think it was NDcube because it was funny, but if it's Unity probably not. I vote for Tose. So what if it's a safe bet???

No offense taken, haha. Super Mario RPG is an already existing game, functioning as a reference. Don't know how much has been taken from the original game in terms of coding, but I think it the developers have done a great job from what I've seen so far. Wouldn't be too worried about whoever's involved.

They may just not have announced the developer because it should have been evident Square Enix would work on their own game.
 
Are we sure the claims of a new secrete boss will bear fruit? Because I don’t want to get tricked into raising my expectations like in the past (rest in peace Geno for smash dream)

Grezzo worked on Luigi’s Mansion remake for 3DS and Miitopia Switch port. So they have been venturing into other projects outside of Zelda. Core parts of the staff are former SE employees. That would be my guess.

It’s not always confirmed beforehand. I believe it’s on a case per case basis.

Currently, I personally don’t think this means a Sephiroth or Gilgamesh situation, though it’d be a pleasant surprise if so - if anything a Culex rematch of some sorts feels more likely with what’s been shown.

A rematch against culex where he becomes 3D might push this to be my favorite game of all time
 
Wow, is this the shortest of the Mario RPGs? Kinda disappointing, I mean this is really short for any single-player focused full price game, let alone an RPG.

Nope, it's the only one of the Mario RPGs I didn't play so far, even though I own it on Wii and the SNES Classic. I'm still excited for the remake, but I'm also disappointed, because I didn't expect it to be this short.

I don't think it's as short as people make it out to be.

Quite honestly, I recall people calling FFVI a "short" game, but I roughly recall spending 60 hours with it just from exploring. I take it most people are basing this on people who speedplay the game more than explore all the hidden stuff.

I'm inclined to believe it is.

If so, they did a remarkably good job with how everything looks so crisp, and if the Triple Attacks and cutscenes are indeed just FMVs, they made the right call keeping them at 60fps. The battle transitions looks great as well.

Final Fantasy is a notable and understandable case (as in, what was Final Fantasy II was re-released as the true title Final Fantasy IV).

It's curious because most of the time, rereleases kept the localised title, including the Mario & Luigi remakes and more recently, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

I think most people just use "Super Mario RPG" to refer to the game. Obviously, the "Legend of the Seven Stars" subtitle is well-known, but it is rarely used. On the other hand, if you say "Mario & Luigi RPG" or "Paper Mario RPG", most people would think you are talking about a specific subset of games ("the Paper Mario / Mario & Luigi RPG games") rather than a specific title. So, for simplicity, they just used the main portion of the title worlwide.

why does it safe to bet on TOSE if this use Unity? Their games only using UE lately. Even tokyo rpg factory have more chance on this
 
The music in this remake is so weirdly good. Like, no one would’ve blamed the musicians if SOME song were kinda eh, but they really went all out for the vast majority of tracks
 
I really don't think game engine has anything to do with things looking samey.

What you are perceiving is Art Style.

You can have the best, technically impressive game and it still look terrible because the art isn't appealing. Vice versa true as well.

Has anyone mentioned here how weird Bowser has voice clips in this game? Everyone else is mute, but they recorded new clips for Bowser and Bowser only in the whole game... (at least when comes to the playable party, I've seen reports Yoshi also has his voice); From the trailers and other footage seemed they'd just have SNES sound effects and nothing else.

It's such an odd choice, you'd think if they would pick just one character to have a voice, that'd be Mario.

I feel like this game was in development during the same transition of retiring Charles Martinet voiceovers for Kevin Aghafi's (meaning to say, it was in development before Super Mario Bros. Wonder and WarioWare Move It, and there was no one to cast at that time).

I guessed they were going for authenticity with just SNES sound effects, but having just one character with a voice is a whiplash, especially not being Mario. Clashes with the rest of the presentation imo.
