The UK website's confirmed some name changes in the English version. "Speardovich" is going to take some getting used to...

The site also has a huge list of character renders that gives us our first look at the Axem Rangers! So very, very happy to see these characters again.

"Speardovich" is an absolutely unnecessary name change that doesn't clarify anything AND sounds worse than the original. That's the first real disappointment I've seen of the marketing stuff so far.

It clarifies it because "yari" is Japanese for "spear". It fits the same pattern as the Axem Rangers.

It's the sounding worse part for me, yeah

Yaridovich sounds mysterious and cool to an english speaker, Speardovich... much less so

I guess what I mean is it doesn't convey any new information -- we know the guy's spear-based because of the everything else about him. It feels unnecessary, even if it is more literal or correct.

The Smithy Gang's lieutenants are all supposed to be named after weapons; Bowyer and Axem Rangers wear their names on their sleeve. Changing Yaridovich's name to Speardovich makes more sense to maintain the localized naming convention.

Mack might get changed as well, since while his name technically has a knife association, it's via an obscure reference to a 1920s music drama.

My issue with Speardovich is that the original game is 27 years old and Yaridovich has been how you Google the character until now. Changing the names of enemies and stuff is fine but for major characters it seems like poor SEO.

As a counterpoint, these characters haven't been a thing in any other game since the original outside of a couple. There aren't going to be enough people who remember stuff like Yaridovich to make them want to keep the old translations if they can make something that's more accurate (or better sounding) in its place

Yeah, I'm not sure Nintendo is concerned about the SEO metrics of a one-off secondary villain that last appeared in a new game three decades ago.

i think people are getting too hung up over a character who is only part of the game for like 5 minutes and is not even a footnote in the story, I would understand it more if it was something like booster or smithy

I disagree that he’s a footnote, he’s one of the major bosses in the game (and one of the toughest so I think people are likely to Google his name for tips). It’s not a big deal, but probably not the choice I would have made.

I mean in that case:
1. There are going to be a thousand YouTube video tutorials on how to beat Speardovich within a day or two of release.
2. Given the combat system changes, looking up a guide for the SNES fight may not be accurate.

We’re seriously doing this now ? Complaining for a name change because « this will ruin the SNES walkthroughs and tutorials » ?!

What are you gonna do about it?
I think I'll call the policeman because I feel threatened by an adult who is angry because a character changed his name for a more accurate one regarding his Japanese name in a video game starring Mario ?

Re: Yaridovich, as someone in AUS I’m a little deflated at the name change personally (assuming NoE translation carries over to our region), but until there’s a confirmation that the name change is for all English territories, I’d reserve judgment; and even then, the new name does make the intention clearer (though at the loss of the bilingual bonus). I suspect they might be overt calling Mack ‘Mack the Knife’ rather than a more pointed(!) name change.

I didn’t catch this at first when the Japanese videos came up, but that (+) Switch prompt is quite intriguing - having a Paper Mario-esque option to swap a party member means that you don’t have to commit to making the most out of a certain team if you accidentally made a wrong choice prior to a key battle (and also positively reinforces the game design intent to be more party diverse with the different Triple Move effects).
I wonder if (a) the Action Gauge for each party trio is saved separately, is party composition agnostic, or resets with a party member switch; and (b) if a Quick Change badge like accessory will be a thing (though there’s the opportunity cost of not having the status effect / instant death protection or the buffs from the high end accessories if you equip this Quick Change analog on Mario or a core party member).

A few other quick things when cross referencing the following screen taken from the BGM video in the New Features subsection at the bottom of the Japanese SMRPG main website:

(a) It seems that before you have a full party of 3 (so before Geno), filling the Action Gauge enables ‘Toad Assist’ (おたすけキノピオ) which by its description seems to imply Toad shows up to assist in some manner - the preview has Toad give an item, which does feel a bit underwhelming, but I suppose there may be the possibility of something a bit more potent…?
(b) Each character brings a specific Chain Bonus effect: Mario (who I assume is always active in the party) boosts Action Gauge gain, Mallow boosts Magic Attack, Geno Attack and Speed, Bowser Defense, and Peach Magic Defense. This can also be seen if you watch the June reveal trailer and pay attention to the listed Chain Bonuses for the Mario/Mallow/Geno and Mario/Peach/Bowser party compositions.

You mean Beardhelmetster and Hammerthy?

The English localization will almost certainly be the same across territories. They're not going to call him Yaridovich in North America and Speardovich in Europe just to satisfy players that had access to the SNES version back in the day.

The names will no doubt be all changed for the french translation (yeah guys, did you know ? The game was never released in Europe nor given any translation aside for the English one).

I hope I won't get too angry at this.

Also, nobody's even angry. some of us just prefer the name Yaridovich

That's it. it's really not that deep lol

Do we know if there are any difficulty options? All the added perks seem too much without some major rebalancing.
there are two difficulty options, yeah

can't remember what they are called tho, someone else will remember lol

Edit: Breezy and Normal

I wonder if I'll still be able to cheese the Johnny fight by letting Mario die to avoid the one-on-one portion.

Yes, my buddy and I came up with this strategy all on our own when we were 8 years old and I've never heard of anyone else using it, lol.

You can also easily avoid the one-on-one by leaving one Bandana Blue alive, I heard that’s what a lot of people do.

Maybe not here, but I've seen some people that were genuinely mad and upset on twitter.
Sure but that's twitter. We all know its become an awful deteriorating place crawling with nasty people doing and saying every kind of horrible and despicable thing you could possibly imagine as they work to scam one another.

So why extrapolate that attitude and behavior onto Fami?

that's not really fair imo

If people are just commenting on stuff they saw on Twitter I wished they say that instead of making it seem like we were being awful to one another in here

Probably more mad that they're changing things they deem unnecessary. Nostalgia is a powerful emotion.

Just wait until people find out 'Peach's ???' is gone. At least, I'm willing to bet it'll be removed in today's climate, lol.

I'm gonna bet it's still there, but you'll be able to look at it in an inventory or something and see that it's something a lot more E for Everyone than (presumably) a vibrator. Maybe it'll be like a secret diary that Peach doesn't want Mario looking at.

...imagine if they make it the Vibe Scepter from Super Princess Peach.

There are now post fight boss battle rematch superbosses. Not to mention the original superbosses

Aw, they didn't remake the singing Piranha Plants commercial! For shame, Nintendo.

Goddamn though, am I hyped for this. It looks so wonderful.

Culex being the exact same sprite is a joke aging like wine.

Yeah, the whole joke with him being a 2D entity in a 3D world is going to be a lot funnier with the greater difference in graphics.

New overview trailer and commercials.

This is going to be the greatest game of all time. They only showed 10 of the 66 tracks and every one is magnificent. We really went from nothing to a buffet of Mario RPG related stuff between this and the music reference in the movie
