Finally finished the demo. Made it in three sessions in total, and man, the start was rough.

Literally too much text, too  tutorial-y, i  almost dropped it but decided to press further in the second session, and that was the right decission.

I like the camera angle more than expected, everything feels closer and bigger, It really driver home the idea of being an ant-sized explorer lost in an uncharted planet.

I have some qualms with some of the QoL changes, but i'm aware of the fact that that's me yelling at clouds, auto-aim and not having to go through bridge puzzles are ultimately good changes that streamline the game and reduce padding. In fact, even with those changes the layout of the first zone still put a decent challenge for a first zone, at least in my case.

Gotta love how they keep you from exploring the whole zone in the demo thanks to not giving you enough Ice Pikmin, btw.

I don't think i'll be able to get the game at launch but damn It hyped me. Also, it's downright beautiful, i expected It to look a bit softer given that it's a UE4 Game on Switch, but nope. I've taken more Screenshots than expected for a demo.

I’m amazed you guys are getting 100%, maybe I should try another run. At the same time I kinda don’t want to get too hooked and have to wait an excruciating three weeks.

Question: does it matter how many days you take to do stuff, aside from speedrun fun?

as long as you don't get enough items you can do as many days as you want

You can actually bring treasures and drop them right outside your ship and they’ll stay there for a couple days at least. Same with the caves so it makes backtracking easier.

But they’re so sparkly and inviting!
Definitely the hardest part of going for 100% is resisting the sparkles

Besides that though it's not too difficult to hit it imo, I'm rather bad at Pikmin and didn't have too much trouble (outside of one particularly hidden treasure that I forgot to use Otachi's tracker for for a bit)

I wish 3 deluxe had a patch to match the -gyro only while aiming- controls here and in 1+2 HD
Same! It’s gonna be annoying going back to Pikmin 3 Deluxe after having played the other Pikmin games on Switch, lol. Wish they would have added that to the game in the update that did nothing but change the game’s HOME Menu icon…

Pikmin merch department in Japan is killing it as usual! Such a shame these are not available elsewhere in the world.

As someone who’s not into this series but kind of interested, the Pikmin 4 setting is new right? Like I don’t remember seeing anything in previous games looking like it takes place in someone’s back yard and house. I always thought it was distant uninhabited wild planets or something. Figured that’d be a pretty controversial tonal shift, but haven’t seen much discussion on it

the franchise as a whole has been kind of leaning away from the post-apocalyptic earth vibes and slowly moved more toward taking place in the modern day, and 4 is just taking that to its logical end i think

that said there's still no visible humans anywhere so it might just be a minor location retcon and everyone's crashing down to a place that hasn't been completely overtaken by the wilds yet

It still is post-apocalyptic earth, the house here is just somehow intact.

There's been occasional mention of it, but mostly from people who didn't realize that the games have always taken place on a mysteriously pristine yet deserted Earth. You could go inside a house and collect fresh lunch meat and fried eggs in Pikmin 2. The demo confirms it's the same planet as always, though it's sort of dubious whether this is a continuation or a reboot.

It might be nostalgia goggles clouding my vision so I'm not putting stock into it, but I feel like Pikmin 3 makes a much better first impression overall. The UI, graphics, animations, and framerate all seem worse in 4. I'm too much of a coward to boot up 3 and be proven wrong though.
I took the goggles off

I was so so wrong. I need more 4 in my life

I'm not playing the demo but I started replaying Pikmin 3 today in anticipation for this. Just got the captain back. I love this game so much.

I want this so bad haha.

haven't looked at any of the leaks so don't tell me if I'm wrong but I'm fully expecting the final boss of this one to be the last surviving human
I was thinking about this same thing when considering the house setting. How horrific would it be if the final boss of a Pikmin game were a human? My thoughts get dark when I think about how that battle would go.

I feel like I've seen these exact impressions several times (hell, I had a similar journey myself)

4's tutorial section is really quite bad, huh. Good thing the game quickly makes up for it

I made it to the first expedition on my first play of the demo the night it came out, and the tutorial didn’t bother me too much. I am curious as I continue tonight if I’ll feel like the game isn’t letting up when it should.

I don't think it consciously bothered me either, but I definitely started getting way more into things once the game took off

The tutorial is a bother imo mostly because it's that much time spent not playing Pikmin as it should be played. Once the game stops being so guided and starts being just traditional Pikmin, it works a whole lot better

The tutorial is long (to the point where I'm not sure if the entire demo wasn't the tutorial), but there's no part where the only thing you can do is stand around waiting for your small squad of Red Pikmin to slowly carry something back to the base, so it's automatically the best in the series.

Even as a newcomer to the series I found the tutorial a bit long-winded. It would be better if they didn’t cut to dialogue every few steps.

My impressions.

Graphics: nothing impressive to me. Looks fine, hopefully the next Pikmin on stronger hardware should be special, visually.

Gameplay: the lack of real true co-op couch gameplay from Pikmin 3 is a bummer. My wife and I were looking to play this together. However, the gameplay is amazing. There is nothing like Pikmin and it’s as addictive as I remember. The stage sizes seem huge. I really hope this is a long playthrough and much dlc incoming.

So, I unlocked Oatchi swim in my first run, but now in my second run it not unlocked. What is the requisite for this?

I just find it weird how the pacing of the Olimar part is actually pretty straight forward and helps you with thr basics, but then it comes to a screeching halt once the next area starts. Like they did a prologue to thr actual tutorial.

Yeah, I'm wondering if the "sparklium", while mostly just a gameplay excuse for making treasures you find valuable, is subtly supposed to hint to it being radioactive.

I love the demo. This is definitely one of the best looking switch games. And the closer camera adds a lot. I also adore the title screen music, I could fall asleep to it

Yeah title screen music is one of the best title screens I've ever heard. Been listening to it on loop throughout the day

I'm still a bit partial to the Pikmin 3 title theme, but this one is also pretty. The music for the first area is seriously disappointing, though, it's no Garden of Hope.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not really liking the vibes in this game. And as a newer fan to the franchise that started with 3 Deluxe and played Pikmin 1 and 2 for the first time this year, I can't really say it's nostalgia.

Tonally each Pikmin game feels like it's about setting up a different atmosphere/mood. Pikmin 1 was a game about isolation and loneliness while climbing up the food chain. Pikmin 2 was a game about being weird. Pikmin 3 was about the beauty of nature and three distinct personalities working together. Pikmin 4, on the other hand, feels like I'm watching the Pixar-ication of Pikmin in real time. There's no longer anything interesting about the characters. I spent an hour in the demo and didn't even finish it because I got bored of being on a leash. I get that Pikmin is very popular in Japan and they probably want to get this game big with kids, but c'mon. The tutorialization is too much.

Maybe when I finish the demo I'll enjoy it a lot more. Honestly, Pikmin games outside 2 never make great first impressions in my opinion. But the fact that I wasn't hooked into 4 an hour in is ... disappointing, to say the least.

Also, the musical rendition of every single theme is by far the worst in the series. I really don't get it. And why is there so much bloom? I love the main theme, though.

Pikmin 2 was a game about being weird. Pikmin 3 was about the beauty of nature and three distinct
Pikmin 2 is about work exploitation, unchecked imperialism, corporatism, heritage theft, decadentism, anti-environmentalism, pseudo-science and cooking.

Truly the weirdest game.

So what are people thinking for the sales potential for this game?

I feel like 4 million by the end of the year would be absolutely phenomenal, but it's hard to gauge. I've seen many people new to Pikmin trying out the series lately which is beautiful. Shadowdropping 1 + 2 for cheaper than the average release was a smart move to get people excited I think. And a great demo for 4 helps as well! It's great to see the series finally getting the spotlight it deserves.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe managed somewhere in the ballpark of 2.2 million, so 3 million definitely seems possible. I don't know that the franchise really has the market appeal to draw in much more than that but I'd be very pleased if it gets to stay a staple release like it has been.
