Hehe the software version on it is 20.0.1 (2001)
That’s not all! Olimar’s tablet from the intro is on Ver. 10.2.6! Put them both together and you get October 26, 2001, the release date of the first Pikmin game!

I’m missing something about the combat, I always seem to lose one or two Pikmin, should I be recalling them before the monsters shake them off or something
Yes, if they get shaken off they're usually helpless and scattered for a few seconds. Calling them back before this happens is both faster and safer, especially against enemies like Empress Bulblax.

Did... did they remake Pikmin 1 as a mode inside Pikmin 4?

Question: Once you gather 1500, does the demo stop RIGHT there, or does it let you finish the day?

I ask as someone who is on day 6 and has like 15 treasures just sitting right next to his ship right now lol.

This game looks excellent, especially the opening level :O . Their artistic intent shines through really well, even though framerate, resolution and texture resolution aren't completely up to snuff. Still, impressed!

The amount of dialogue in the demo though... Sheesh :p . Skip skip skip skip...

Otherwise I really like the addition of caves!

Finished the demo with 98% completed in the first area. I love it. The QOL improvements with each Pikmin game continue to impress. It's also very good looking for UE on Switch. Just makes me hopeful that this ends up getting an upgrade for next gen so that it looks more crisp and runs at a higher framerate.

Only real gripes are that the music in the first area is a tad lame compared to past games and the potential for this being a reboot. I know Pikmin isn't really a heavy story game but it is a bummer that this might end up yet another Nintendo series that straight up disregards continuity. Maybe they're pulling a fast one on us and there's some amnesia bullshit going on or something. Who knows. But this are basically nitpicks atm.

Gonna be a long 3 weeks, man.

Anyone know what all differences there are between the “Normal” and “Quick” control types? It seems the Quick type allows you to select an option from the menu that comes up when holding the Y button by simply pressing a direction rather than having to press Y again after that, but I’m not sure what else may have changed besides that.

There’s a lot getting datamined from the demo, including all enemies (including the final boss) and some other surprises that haven’t been officially announced. Just a warning to stay clear if you’re avoiding that sort of thing.

Is there a way in this one to send all of your guys to attack at once? My wife and I can’t seem to find it. If they took that away then that sucks.

Charge is an upgrade; you should unlock it for Day 3 by just following what the game wants you to do in Day 2.

Swarm from Pikmin 1 and 2 is also back in this one though; you get both; but it doesn’t seem like you can get that upgrade in the demo.

Tell me about this swarm ability.

how does motion control work in this? I can't seem to activate it
It’s enabled by default, but it’s only active while holding A to throw, while holding B to whistle, or while locked on to a target with ZR. So basically the same as how Pikmin 1 + 2 on Switch handle it, from what I understand. While this means that unfortunately you can’t use gyro controls to move your reticle at all times like in Pikmin 3 Deluxe, the benefit to it is that you won’t have to deal with gyro drift, plus it frees up the R button to have other uses than being dedicated to resetting the gyro controls.

So, what is the command for swarm in this game?

Just got alerted that Pikmin 4 preorders are now worth 600 Gold Points
This is also on the Nintendo website, at least as of yesterday. I went to download the demo using the web version of the eShop, and they were pushing this promotion. I imagine it went live with the demo to drive pre-orders. They say that it applies retroactively to old pre-orders, but as a voucher user, I'm not benefiting (as expected).

I'm not completely sold on using raw materials for building

While it does add some nice resource management since it's a shared pool with the lab upgrades, bridge pieces served as a nice secondary objective to open up new areas before, which is kinda lost here.

Guess I'm just going to keep playing the demo over and over until release because this is really comfy

it's still kinda there since the piles of materials are functionally similar and doing it this way means that there's some interplay with moving the base around

but also yeah it's kinda just... weird

Cautiously optimistic about the demo. I'm hoping this is the tutorial area and, like the TotK tutorial, the game gets a lot more open and fun once you're done. The caves I played are surprisingly boring, but again that's fine as long as this is a tutorial.

The biggest issue I have right now is the controls. Pikmin 3 was really built around having the wii remote and game pad. Having similar controls here leaves you with awkward controls using the joycons (which are worse than the wii remote) and too much stuff and not enough buttons to do it. I wonder if the Switch 2 will have a goofy controller, this is the third major switch game where I felt the traditional design of the joycons has let the game down.

100% the demo! Overall a ton of fun and I'm really looking forward to the full release now. Have some minor issues like I mentioned above, and I'm not sure I'll like this game more than 3 in the end (my only other Pikmin experience) but it looks to be blast

Might be one of the few games I end up 100% as well, since the game makes it pretty convenient and addictive to do so with its multiple trackers. But that depends on how the rest of it shakes out (and I'll probably not go for all the Platinum medals since my Dandori skills are definitely not up to snuff for that)

It's the opposite, controls here are different from P3, and game is designed around this, that's why there a semi auto lock-on here, you don't need even aim accurately in 99% of time.

Well... I didn't like the demo. The constant interruptions made it a chore, in no moment it felt like I could explore something without taking two steps and being stopped to get some banter or tutorial. I don't remember any Pikmin game being this on your nose through the first hours of the game, it's just too much. I ended up skipping all the text...

Mechanically speaking is fine, but I am not a fan of the dog companion at the moment. The actions it can perform you can solve them using your Pikmin anyway and is more pleasant that way for me.

Good think is, I won't need to replay this again thanks to save transfer.

It took me three tries but I finished a demo run that I'm happy with. 100% in four days.

I enjoyed it, but holy hell do they need to learn to shut the fuck up and let me move more than five steps before they interrupt me with yet another cutscene or dialogue. The changes to the motion controls took some getting used to. I don't miss the drift, but I did like aiming ahead of time. I wish there were a way to use a Wii remote but alas. Despite my initial trouble with the control changes the game was far, far too easy. I played about 12 days total and didn't lose a single pikmin.

It might be nostalgia goggles clouding my vision so I'm not putting stock into it, but I feel like Pikmin 3 makes a much better first impression overall. The UI, graphics, animations, and framerate all seem worse in 4. I'm too much of a coward to boot up 3 and be proven wrong though.

Graphics??

The semi-auto lock is my biggest issue. Is there an easy way to break to a different target that I'm missing? I keep getting stuck on the wrong thing.
