With no more Smash Bros, Nintendo greenlit the next best thing they had

FlingSmash 2.

Snipperclips - Second Cut, let's gooooo
You’ve made a fatal error in your reasoning.

Snipperclips is good and those staff should probably be fired if they didn’t like it. They’d probably consider Endless Ocean 3 to be dull and boring too!

when Nintendo Land is a thing that exists and is currently forever trapped on the Wii U.
I have so many positive memories playing Nintendo Land with my young niece.

I give Wii U a lot of well-deserved flack, but Nintendo Land is a legitimately great game.

Now they have actual theme parks underway and film and merchandise deals building up it feels like the best possible time to return to the idea of Nintendo Land and use it as a way of keeping players familiar with and excited by different Nintendo IP. It's a game that's ripe for long-term support, too. Stick a new version into the NSO subscription and add new Nintendo series to it over time to keep people playing.

We can probably rule out a Flip Wars sequel given:

1) It's not actually a Nintendo game, they just picked it up for international release.

2) The developer went bust shortly after it came out.

Emily flipping us all off with some misleading information.

It’s Urban Champion 2 because someone super high up at Nintendo still loves the first game probably.

1 2 3 Switch sounds most likely.

Back in my day we got the Super Mario Bros Super Show and we liked it.
DIC was such a big part of my childhood. The Mario cartoons, the Sonic ones, Inspector Gadget, ugh, those were some good Saturday mornings.
Oh man, my parents used to tape The Super Mario Bros Super Show off TV for me. That, along with Inspector Gadget, The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) were childhood cornerstones for me as well. No wonder you’re one of my favorite fami!

I have a hard time coming up with casual games that would leave people unimpressed but still be worth bringing back in the first place. At the risk of completely overthinking it:

  • I can think of several series that could receive dull sequels: Nintendo Land, Tomodachi, Nintendogs, Style Savvy... but I wouldn't describe any of them as "shallow" so they don't necessarily qualify. I guess Rhythm Heaven is mechanically shallow but that's just rhythm games for you.
  • Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival was a critical and financial bomba (granted, it came out quite late during the Wii U's lifetime) but maybe they're trying again because of the massive success of New Horizons.
  • I'm curious if it could be one of the Wii series games. I think we can rule out a new Wii Sports which would garner some excitement. Fit has probably been replaced by RFA for good. Maybe Wii Play, Party or Music (or Chess lmao)? If it's one of them, I'm curious if they're keeping the Wii name or if they're rebranding them.
  • The DS and Wii had several casual games, some of which sold quite well. But after Clubhouse Games and Big Brain Academy later this year I think you'd really have to start scraping the bottom of the barrel to get anything noteworthy. I don't see them bringing back English Training, Flash Focus/Sight Training or Cooking Guide despite their sales on DS but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they're making a sequel to this banger.
  • Don't know how likely Pokémon spinoffs like Rumble are. Full-priced Quest 2, anyone?
  • 1-2-Switch is still the most likely candidate imo but maybe my own opinion on the game is clouding my judgement.

Either way, speculating about this is pretty fun.

I think Odyssey is more likely than ARMS

Nintendo doesn't publish Assassin's Creed

2022 is shaping up to be amazing if nothing gets delayed. Better than 2017, better than 2019.

Multiple projects are finished and waiting to be officially announced. Most of them sound great!

Before you get too excited, I heard about an upcoming casual game that sounds like a stinker. I guess not everything can be a winner.

I hope you all have a great weekend.
So I Guess we can rule out an upcoming Rhythm Heaven sequel, which would be Goty material.

I expected a response like this.

Can't say I've come up with any smart reply myself, though. 😢 And you're not even wrong. Damn.

I should have time to finish Three Houses tomorrow, leaving me free to move on to Phantasy Star IV, and then Shin Megami Tensei V. Switch's library of RPGs is really something.
Funnily enough, this morning my Switch News channel had a big notification about the Western RPGs I can buy on Switch. It's quite the list:

  • Witcher 3
  • Knights of the Old Republic
  • Disco Elysium
  • Divinity: Original Sin 2
  • Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II
  • Planetscape: Torment and Icewind Dale
  • Neverwinter Nights
  • Diablo II Resurrected
  • The Outer Worlds
  • Pillars of Eternity
  • Diablo III Eternal Collection
  • Skyrim
  • Torchlight II

I'm definitely going to cave and get KOTOR this side of Christmas. I can feel it.

Hot damn that's a nice list. I own the vast majority of those haha

25 pages since I last entered this thread so there was much to cover and I want to have my say in it. So here's my weekly news-letter.

Sand-Levels
The biggest offense this week was the hate for sand-levels, I can not allow it - Mor Ardain, Oblivia, Sand-kingdom, Gerudo-desert. All time great worlds in some of the best Nintendo games of all time. Learn to love the sand!!!

BotW 2022
This is correct, the game will release this year and I wont listen to anything else.

Shin Megami Tensei V
It launched, wasnt expecting myself to buy it - but I did anyway, since I am always losing to FOMO. Currently in transition.
It's also going to be my first ever SMT game so I have no idea what to expect, outside of probably hating it because it's too hard.

Physical games vs Digital games
I have never bought a single full price game digitally at full price and wont until I am forced due to the lack of existance.

2022 release schedule
It's gonna be the goat, and it's been covered to death already but I have a pretty big feeling we're gonna see something no one has written down in their lists and it's going to be big. The actual number of releases will also be way more than the 10-12 games people write down, outside of 2017 it's always been around 20 games give or take a few.

When Emily said it's going to be a "stinker", are we sure she means it's a just bad game or could she be playing on words?

Maybe she doesn't like the smell of sushi. I sure know I don't.

Sushi Striker 2: Three Strikes and You're Trout

Five worlds in to 3D World and I think I’m finally getting used to the ludicrous speed. On Wii U I remember holding the run button pretty much the entire time. On Switch, the run button is situational - it’s just too dang fast to be used for precise platforming. Sometimes you just have to slow down a bit!

I’ve also been dealing with the camera perspective. This time around I seem to be having more of an issue with not being able to line up jumps all the time. It’s pretty common to miss a question block or a goomba or whatever due to the camera. I don’t remember this being a big problem on Wii U (it’s probably was though), but maybe it’s more to do with the fact that I’m playing 3D World immediately after a 3D Mario where you have full camera control. I’d be interested to go back to 3D Land and see if the stereoscopic 3D makes any kind of a difference with the camera perspective problem I’m having.

Luckily I wouldn’t call the camera issue gamebreaking at all. I’m having a lot of fun playing this game again. The levels are creative and varied, and it’s great finding the green stars and stamps. I’m glad I decided to come back to 3D World!

What a mind blowing list, all these are on a Nintendo handheld. And more will be added, like Mass Effect. It does need some Fallout, though.

1-2-Switch-Too or Wii Switch Party are my best guesses, though the latter is probably redundant with two popular Mario Parties being thrown on the system.

Some other guesses you didn’t mention: Art Academy, Picross, Crosswords, Pushmo, Fluidity, Steel Diver, Amiibo Tap, Switch Karaoke, 100 Classic Books. (I’m not sure how “casual” it is or if it’s a “stinker” — but it’d also be nice to see more NES Remix-style games.)

Or maybe it’s the ultimate casual stinker Trojan horse: R.O.B. 😮

By the way, does anyone remember the Art Style game Pictobits (or Picopict/Pictopict depending on where you live?) I would kill for a revival of that game.

I wouldn't describe some of these as shallow per se and I tried to exclude games I think wouldn't really make sense to bring back anymore, either because they weren't financial successes or wouldn't make much sense in the Switch ecosystem (like 100 Classic Books). Picross for example lives on at the original developer, it's just not a retail release or published by Nintendo anymore. They actually did release a Switch Karaoke game, it just never released outside of Japan.

I had no idea Pillars of Eternity was on Switch? How is it?
Really bad. I somehow managed 100 hours (might be a glitch with the time tracker actually) through two playthroughs both of which abruptly ended only partway through due to game breaking bugs which were never fixed. The publishers claimed both of those specific bugs were fixed in various patches but they absolutely were not.

Oh, I wasn’t going off of “shallow” at all, more focused on stuff that would be viewed as “casual.” I actually own most the games in all the series I mentioned above (and enjoyed them.) I also agree some are incredibly unlikely.
Forgot about the Japanese karaoke game, thanks for reminding me! I doubt they’d be gearing up for a western release of something like that, but thought it was worth throwing out as an option.

I just thought about another one. I don’t know if people consider it casual or not, but: Mario vs DK. I could see that not generating a lot of enthusiasm at whatever level Emily’s source is at.

(Should also mention that I apologize if I missed something that was said that would narrow the criteria for what it could be.)

My favourite take on Animal Crossing DLC and update.

"They had to release rest of the updates and DLC as one because they have no holiday seller and Animal Crossing sales have started to die down".
Because Pokémon doesn't exist or something. XD
