Spent the last week playing Steam Deck, going back to the Switch Lite is crazy. It's so much... well, lighter. Way smaller screen too.

Both have their pros and cons, but it does make me appreciate the Lite's form factor a lot.

Article is over one year old -- easy to tell thanks to the "Persona 5 needs to be on Switch asap" (lol) part --, but it still hits the nail on its head, easily.
I mean, there are obviously still some tech differences, and thus differences in game(s), between handheld and home consoles, but at the end of the day, we're so super close to where the lines get blurred to the point of almost no distinction. The Switch was the first true, consequential step, the Steam Deck kinda re-enforced this development, getting really close to providing an experience on par with the new current gen (with certain drawbacks due to form factor, but unique advantages as well), and Switch 2 will further cement it imo.
While I also understand the snippet about 3DS-like games slowly fading away from consoles, at least to the extent of being less frequently released, I'd say that's simply following market trends, i.e. those games mostly being found on phones these days, while the dedicated gaming market has consolidated itself not only hardware wise, but also in terms of software. At least in some capacity, with Indies and Nintendo still filling that void somewhat.

For its form factor alone, I pre-ordered myself a Ayaneo Air Plus. Those independent Hong Kong/Taiwanese handheld PCs usually have low build quality but damn Ayaneo Air looks much, much better than Steam Deck. Deck is one of the worst handheld I owned ever. Sure it's stronger and have much bigger library than Switch but it's so uncomfortable to hold, all those advantages mean absolutely nothing. Now I'm patiently awaiting for my Ayaneo to replace this giant of a handheld for good.

Game sizes will remain as a problem, though.

First one was very good, second one was excellent, third one was ooof.
I can't get behind the second one. Mainly for the forced love triangle nonsense.

Just a lot of forced additions that just don't add up to me. And a lot of the action scenes just kind of border on excessive. But ah well.

Yeah, for all the cool stuff the Deck offers, I just can't use it the same way as the Switch due to the form factor. It's more like holding a controller than a handheld, which is nice for certain situations/games, but worse than Switch in (for me: most) other instances. It's obviously very much a ymmv thing, no doubt about that. I very much understand you there and your desire for something like the Air, which looks stunning! A Deck Lite would certainly be to my liking.

Doesn't Aya Neo use windows? Couldnt pay me enough to use that garbage operating system.
The less Windows reliant we/these devices are, the better, yeah. SteamOS also is easily the better UX for handheld/gaming PCs. I'm very much looking forward to its full release on other PCs/for other hardware configs, so that I might just be able to ditch Windows (other than for Office related stuff) and go mostly Linux (dual booting, then) on my main rig as well.

Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom fans, I'm so happy for ya'll, but us overhead Zelda fans need a little something too T____T

:p

My expectation was that they’d keep the “traditional” formula around via new (but lower budget) top down games or remakes, but we haven’t seen a new one in a while, so now I don’t know what to think.

Not sure about other models but Ayaneo Air Plus uses Windows. Very similar to GPD in that aspect. That's a good thing for me, much of my library is either at Epic or Gog (haven't installed windows to my deck yet)

Only downside of Air Plus is that it no longer uses a OLED screen but that gives a slight battery boost.
Please no! I waited so long for my ALBW followup, I can't have another remake! I want Hilda and Ravio (the better versions of Zelda and Link) back!

Yea I'm waiting for that. Will boot (lol) windows off my laptop asap.

Yea I'm out. Main draw of the deck is the ecosystem and valve's shader stuff fixing games that are broken on windows or with poor performance from the start. Don't care about Epic Games, but I've not had trouble with GOG stuff through sideloading on Deck.

I would love to know what Grezzo is currently working on. It's a bit concerning but I hope we do get more games done in the classic style in the future.

At this point, I feel like whatever Grezzo is working on is being saved for the next system.

They already showed off item fusion and vehicle fusion in TotK.

Up next: character fusion.

Thinking about how unfortunate it was for the Two Towers movie to be released in 2002 so people were accidentally calling it “the Twin Towers”

Seeing the sale success of Sonic Frontiers just reminds me of when it was first rumored and then the first trailers and hands on happened and everyone was talking about how it was going to suck and flop. Just really funny looking back on it, I think people were surprised by the quality. Game has its problems but it's pretty good.

Anyone know about custom shells?
Alas no, but honestly if I had some spare cash to burn I would buy a second controller and commission one of the custom controller folks who had the ability and expertise to make shell molds to get those translucent colours

(But for real how did you know I was already in the midst of making the searches everytime I see them restocked? 😋)

Was going to ask for input on if I should resume Splatoon 3 or Live A Live and I see there’s a SplatFest this weekend so I guess that’s decided.

Thanks universe.

I order a couple switch games on targets bogo1 50 percent off since it stacked with he square Enix sale.

Got crisis core and DQ treasures. Ordered at the same time but shipped separately and arrived together. Crisis Core was in an unpadded bag (no damage to game). Treasures came Ina big box with a ton of padding (no damage either). Funny.

Unfortunately the consensus is that the Switch will seemingly implode if it’s UI is forced to render a .jpg or any other colours outside of Black and White. So hopefully we’ll see it with the Switch 2 :(
You should drop the condescension and find some new shtick cause this one's getting old.

In a way it’s kinda good, in retrospect, that the game got such poor marketing, allowing it to surprise us the way it did. But now I have pretty high hopes for the sequel and am afraid that they won’t be able to meet them

Hey Fami. I pre-ordered the Zelda OLED to replace my 2017 Switch thats had audio issues in the past even though we're prob getting a successor in the next 18 months. Just wanted to let you know who to thank when we get the announcement as soon as I pick it up

May is approaching!!

Me waiting for April to be over with so I can have my birthday, my two-week break from work, and TotK:

Guess I've got to play some other stuff in the meantime. Resident Evil 4, Tchia and maybe Torna: The Golden Country as well seem like good picks.

To be fair, if you're fine selling your Zelda OLED then you'll probably be able to recoup most of the cost of a Switch 2. Ofc that depends on full backwards compatibility and no other Nintendo weirdness making that transition work. But it could!

Any which way, we appreciate your sacrifice :)

At the very least, I think it's a real possibility the Drake doesn't have an OLED with the launch model so this'll still have some value lol

Oh damn, I haven't really thought of that possibility. Shit, now I have another worry for this new device lol :p

Sitting at a local diner and they're playing a hillbilly banjo version of the Benny Hill theme over the speaker and I can't stop laughing

A while back when all those big tech layoffs were happening, I thought "At least working in the healthcare industry (sort of) means I probably won't experience that."

Welp, guess what I found out today? 🫠

(On the plus side I'll be paid as an employee through the end of May and get severance too.)

Fuck :( That's awful.
