Me and my brother got our tickets for the 10th, was the earliest both of us could make it. We're gonna be dodging spoilers until then 😅

I think I found it. Is it one with "secret screenings at my local cinema?" It seems like a "rearrangement" of the trailer footage and there is no mention of musical (It’s a thing right?). Anyway it sounds super fake.

Yeah, apparently Bowser has a piano number that focuses on Peach.

Just overheard 2 people at work talking about this movie and John Wick 4, but they sounded way more excited about this one. Others overheard and jumped in... and we just finished a 15 minute conversation about it. This movie is gonna be huge

Social media impressions might start filtering in before then, they usually do.

I thought some countries were still with a March 30th release date, but it seems like most were reschedule to April 5th (with some getting later in the month); I was already getting anxious that we'd be seeing open spoilers on social media tomorrow!

It's from a 7eleven promotional event, but the entire Mario melody for the movie in crusty audio is out there

it's SMB1 overworld, SMB2 overworld, SMB1 underground with captain toad mixed in, SMB3 vs hammer bros, SMB level complete, SMB underwater, Mario world Castle, And gusty garden Galaxy

To me it felt like it had the FF themes at least. And uhh, compared to what releases as Final Fantasy now, it seems all the closer.
it helps that FF changes each game. 16 entries in, it doesn't seem so out of place now. I still think they should make a game based on the lore

If Sonic 2 can get one point under 70% RT with some bad pacing, some unfunny jokes and unnecessary human characters dragging the movie down, Mario, with all it has going for it, will just get a 80% RT or even bigger. I feel Illumination is underestimated in this particular case because:
1. They have the backing of Nintendo, who wants a quality product.
2. This movie is different from other Illumination movies in that it has a way stronger emphasis on action when most of them are really very comedy-based, and I expect that element to shine in reviews, which are rating the more recent Illumination stuff around 70% RT. Even if the humor doesn't hit for a lot of people, the action and the emotion (which has been highlighted as a big element of the movie in many interviews) that comes with it might save the movie for many people.

impressions then reviews for a movie feels weird. for a game, it makes sense because you can sample a portion of a much longer game. but sampling a portion of a movie is weird to me given the length
It seems someone actually gets to review the movie earlier, on Saturday, which is also the movie LA premiere

That’s common for big Hollywood movies. All Marvel movies do this.

Universal Malaysia released a new spot earlier:

Mostly old footage, but there are some new snippets in there for those who wanna avoid spoilers:

Looks like Mario and Peach have a talk about Luigi. I hope this is a sign that they'll show the effects the separation has on Mario as well as Luigi.

Peach saves Toad on Rainbow Road by utilising the antigravity and glider on her bike. I have a feeling that this might be the big showpiece of the film, though the final battle might spring something.

Right at the end is a pretty interesting wrinkle in that it shows Peach getting crowned. Might not be anything meaningful, but it could suggest that she's relatively new to the position?

Don't under-estimate the effect the run-time will have on potential gross -- this is a lean-ass movie at 92 minutes, even for an animated film. Theatres can cram in a bunch of extra showings more than usual (seriously, go look at your local showtimes, it's nuts how many times this is playing), parents will be more inclined to bring younger 3-5 year old kids, multiple viewings is more likely. It's gonna be huge.

This is where Sonic 2 missed the boat, there's no scenario where that movie should've been two hours long. Could've easily had 20 mins of dumb human scenes cut out and been a better movie for it, too.

I think Pratt spoiled an aspect of the training montage in an interview:

That "Holding Out for a Hero" will play over it.

Sorry if you've said this previously in the thread, but have you seen the film? Or just have sources that have?

Obviously don't worry about responding if you can't!
I've seen it now :) Can give light impressions on Saturday. But I'll say I'm excited for you all to see it.

I don't understand, on Twitter the first review will arrive on April 1st?? Or April 4 ?
Social media embargo goes up on Saturday, meaning people can post short-form impressions on Twitter and such. Review embargo goes up April 4th, which is when you can expect major press publications to post their in-depth reviews/all the stuff that gets added to RT.

I've done some research and arrived to the conclusion there's at the very least three licensed songs in the movie.
I need a Hero, Take on Me, Thunderstruck
.

If this is what they are disappointed at, then this movie is probably good. Who cares about Mario's height
The thing about this is that we know they had a size chart reference for the movie characters so I wonder if this is really a scaling inconsistency or just the way the perspective is framed that causes an illusion of inconsistency.

If anyone wants to avoid spoilers, do not watch the MTV UK interviews with the cast on YouTube. There's a quiz which has some spoilery bits, relating to the use of licenced music and a couple of plot points.

They snuck licensed music in on us despite being very careful to only show footage with music from the games in marketing...
