StarTopic Nintendo First Party Software Development |ST| Nintendo Party Superstars

Crazy that they didn't announce any new games in this Direct, and nothing after July. And still no Mario game, not even a sports one in June. We're still very much in the dark.

Nintendo are releasing a full price Kirby remaster the same month as the lower price Metroid remaster. I don't think Prime's lower price point is indicative of a change of price for remasters; I think it's because Nintendo are planning on getting Prime 2 and 3 out before Prime 4 and they think the lower price points will make purchasing the trilogy separately more palatable.

Also - any indication Sumo Digital were involved in this? My hunch is they assisted Retro, and are handling remasters of 2 and 3. Assuming - for obvious reasons - Prime Remastered is the game Retro finished back in September 2021, the lengthy gap between completion and release could have been to give Sumo (or another studio) time to get 2 and 3 working and upgraded on Switch.

Come back in 4 to 6 months for another sudden Prime release (I hope!).
There is not enough time to release Prime 2 and 3 before Priem 4, especially because Prime 4 have a large probability to be a March/May 2024 title

Let's be pretty blunt: we've really no idea when Prime 4 is coming. I'd be surprised if it's any later than 2024, but I'm not counting on it being early in the year.

I guess I get to give myself a cookie now.

They are releasing this as a total digital shadowdrop (with the global audience probably not following the long time rumours around this), and having the physical edition available just with 2 weeks notice. All this in a month when they already had planned a game to publish (Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe). I think that they could perfectly fit Prime 2 in any Q2/Q3 months and Prime 3 in any Q3/Q4, for example.

But the price and strategy around this one includes a low price, and an extremely short (or absent) marketing campaign (probably to not saturate the public when the 4th one comes). So, if they keep it for the rest (which is likely), I think that they might even be able to release 2 and 3 still before the summer, if Prime 4 had any chance of being a holiday game.

While in principle they could release 2 and 3, the remakester of Prime 1 has been pretty much an open secret for ages, if 2&3 were also coming, we'd probably have known.

My take:

30 dollars for the cheap games and cashgrabs - mario sports, baseball, tennis, etc.
40 dollars for the remasters - Metroid Prime
60 dollars for the middle sized games that arent quite AAA but still very much quality - i wont give examples
70 dollars for the AAA shit - i also wont give examples

Unless they massively scale back mario sports games, so that they actually became what the internet pretends they have been, they're very much going to stay in the $60 tier.

I wonder if right now they want Mario to be synonymous with the movie, and are therefore holding off on showing the usual June game until after it premieres. If it's something small, like another sports game, it could be well-suited for a short turnaround.

Because content is what everyone praises these games for

I'm entirely ready to close the book on the "no notable games after Zelda" bit after this Direct (doesn't look good when the originator of the claim; who is associated with E3, as a reminder; is currently throwing a temper tantrum over how the Direct format should be retired); the current empty space after July pretty much cements a June presentation in my mind. That's what H2 2021 looked like right after the February Direct that year after all; just with a port (Skyward Sword) leading the charge instead of a new game (Pikmin 4).

In the meantime they can probably squeeze one or two more titles into H1; they usually do. The Pokemon Presents is likely to have a Pokemon spin-off; probably time for Detective Pikachu 2, but there are other options available too (could Spike Chunsoft have another Mystery Dungeon remake done?). Whatever it is, I could see it joining Advance Wars in April based on past reveal to release cycles. June is entirely empty for first-party releases though; and my personal bet would be on a small casual title following the Game Builder Garage approach and release within short notice. There's always a chance for something more unpredictable; like maybe a Mario Direct around the release of the film, or something as out-there as the Tomodachi Life Direct in 2014?

I'm thinking Mario Direct in late March or early April; advertise the film, theme parks, celebrate the series a little, announce some games. Especially so if Nintendo plump for 2D Mario as the headline title late this year. That might allow them to skate to early September to confirm stuff for November/December (and shadow drop Metroid Prime 2 in September plz).

June might end up with a Pokemon spin-off this year, I thought, but something budget priced from NdCube or EPD 4 might be on the cards - maybe another EPD 4 x indieszero collab?

The "open secret" has included that 2&3 were going to be farmed out to non-Retro studios, using Prime 1 as a template. Whether that happened is unknown, but considering that the source for all the reporting around Prime 1 was probably from inside Retro, I'm not sure we would know.

That said, I'm not holding my breath

I wouldn't be surprised if Retro just ends up doing them after MP4 is complete.

are you by chance mixing up Bailey's (formerly connected to ReedPop through USGamer who is now involved with the ESA/E3) IGN article about the ESA plans that adds in Robinson's original VGC rumor about the light schedule? I'm by no means in support of keeping that rumor alive but I'm not clear on that connection atm.
turns to look at @MondoMega
oh damn, the full credits are out!

She's talking about Dring, who I believe was the first to talk about the "no notable games" thing and just wrote a bad article saying that the Direct format is bad lol

Ah, was under the impression the rumor started at VGC since they don't cite Dring iirc lol

bad look :D

Two down, maybe three. I'm starting to backtrack on thinking the Namco remaster isn't Baten Kaitos. The job pages still don't name the title, so we still can't confirm either way.

I'm also currently expecting Jet Dragon to be third-party, similar to Fashion Dreamer.

I just checked the credits and yes that person who's LinkedIn mentioned the Retro Studios project completed in September 2021 is credited under Contract Environment Artist in Prime Remastered!

How can we trust Retro if they're outsourcing their biggest project? They're not ready for modern development given this!

/s obviously

She's talking about Dring, who I believe was the first to talk about the "no notable games" thing and just wrote a bad article saying that the Direct format is bad lol
I'm actually surprised there's not more discussion about the "direct format should be killed and changed". Unless I'm just blind to the thread discussing it.

There's no value in discussing it. It's from someone who has a vested interest in E3. Not to mention Dring is an analyst who's also on the "new hardware or suffer bad stock train"

People always love to argue negative opinions about Nintendo, and you have some people saying the last few directs have all been bad cause they have no taste.

It is, but i never heard anything of this level on a nintendo game. I thought dread for example was very self contained?
Retro as an modern studio has simply adapted to the development mechanics on big budget games.
I don't see anything unusual in this, and in fact surely the contracted outsourcing is repeating in Metroid Prime 4.

I would not compare it with dread either because they are not the same team.

And Zelda BotW have more than 15 outsourcing teams, so... we have see examples like this on the past
The only difference with respect to past situations is that now something that is normal and quite common has simply been given relevance.

it feels a bit more sussy coming from someone who's on the team to bring E3 back. kinda conflict of interest-y

Pretty much all of the outsourcing was in relation to the art. Retro handled the game design and programming. I wonder if that means anything in regards to a re-release of Prime 2/3. The initial report is that the project was originally going to be the whole trilogy before being scaled down when Retro worked were brought onto Prime 4, with Prime 2/3 potentially being outsourced.

The price point is definitely interesting, especially since every other re-release besides I think Miitopia has been the standard 60.

The file structure of Prime R may very well confirm the former part of the story; though it might be worth waiting for people to dig a little deeper into the decompilation efforts.

we already knew this because of belmont post, but someone who left retro in June 2018 is credited , so development took at least more than 3 years till september 2021

Semi-related, but Genius Sonority vet who went to produce DQ at SE after DQ Swords, Ryota Aomi, just left SE:

I REALLY hope he's either going back to Genius Sonority, or is joining TPC or Game Freak to return to Pokémon again. He was a game designer on Colosseum and XD and worked on Trozei.

Why would anyone downgrade to Genius Sonority? He's probably going to a Netease or Tencent studio given his previous standing

I could see this happening. I doubt he feels the need to limit himself to Nintendo/Nintendo affiliates; there's a wide world of developers out there. I'm sure he's ended up somewhere he's happy with!

I personally think Prime 1 Remaster for $40 over a Trilogy for $60 makes more sense. Most people consider the original an all time classic, while the sequels are good they are not as well regarded as the original. I don't think they will continue to remaster the sequels as they will likely sell less that Prime 1 Remaster and most people would have their fill from that game and just want Prime 4. If a Switch 2 eventually comes out and has GameCube/Wii Games as part of Nintendo Online, I reckon those sequels will be there without any improvements other than higher resolution but that would be years from now.

Prime 3 needs to cut a lot

-The horrible tutorial that has way too much story that is not good
-The minigames
-The railshooting segments
-The aggressive and mandatory hints.

And Prime 3 needs to completely rebalance Hypermode.

But if all of those things were done, it would be viewed as maybe the best game in the series.

I don't know how hard this would be either as most of this stuff doesn't need to be replaced with anything significant, just cutting it would probably be fine.

i dont get why the minigame at the start of the game needs to be cut, its not even mendatory. In any case they wont be cutting anything as they seem to be very respectful to the source game. God knows they could have removed a few things from Prime but they didn't.

Also Prime 3's opening literal best part i mean

Just wind of the Twitter discourse on that article this morning and it was so rough to read lol. Dude is just doubling tripling and quadrupling down on his take and then backing it up with very odd suggestions like wishing directs were interactive or unrelated asks about wanting to see more creativity in them (which run counter to his apparent concerns about investors).

Anyway, you’d think an investor would be able to understand that blowing the pot on any new hardware details would hurt sales in the short term. We know what’s coming, investors can either stay on board or keep their requests to double down on in app purchases to themselves lol.
