Kudos to Flynn, Hesse, Lopes and pals for yet ANOTHER solid short.

And what can I say? Throwbacks to Echidna Lore(tm) of any sort are the kind of thing that get that old fan in me waking up.

Wow, that was well done - really captured my nostalgia for the Sonic Adventure games. Early 2000s-era Sonic had so much potential post-SA2 that I feel was discarded after the disaster that was Sonic 06 in favor of the modern boost formula games with limited narrative scope.

it's not really teasing chao stuff if it's just a recreation of the story from SA1 and putting them in logical spots of angel island as a result

chao garden is never coming back

I used to be annoyed at Sega about not really bringing back Chao Garden in any capacity, but I've realized even if that were to happen I wouldn't really do much with it anymore tbh.

They should bring it back though.

i don't have to say it

you already know it's true. the last game to feature a chao garden in any capacity was SADX in june 2003. almost 2 decades
Never say never, fans kept clamoring for a 16 bit style sequel to S3&K and we finally got Sonic Mania after 20+ years. Also I wouldn't count SADX as the last appearance of the Chao since that was just an enhanced port of the Dreamcast game, all it added was replace the vmc connectivity with gba connectivity, but SA2B had already done that. The last game Sega incorporated new Chao raising elements into was Sonic Advance 1 (with the same garden ported into Advance 2 and Pinball Party).

Also it's technically not the last game where the Chao Garden/Chao were meaningfully part of the gameplay loop. Hatching Chao and equipping them for stat boost was an element in Sonic Chronicles.

i mean, if you're going to count pinball party that's still 2003. anyone with knowledge of the old a-life systems have left the company ages ago, and unlike with mania there isn't a gigantic fan developer community interested in recreating that experience.

if just including chao is all you need to get your hopes sparked in some way, the fact that angel island is clearly depicted here to be teeming with chao, and that angel island is being featured as a preview for a game set in the starfall islands should be enough to put your heart at ease because of the obvious connection they're going to make eventually.

I'm a tad worried about the game though, even though I'm happy it isn't making everything automatic like in forces...just want a good 3d sonic game again.

To be fair, I don't think it was entirely '06's fault (though it certainly didn't help).

A lot of the 00s era of Sonic games seemed to largely feed off of each other when it came to building upon the series' lore. Adventure finally made good on everything about a "mysterious ancient civilization and the apocalyptic disaster that befell it" that was the stuff the 16-bit era's JP instruction manuals had mentioned since Sonic 2. Adventure 2 added in Shadow and all his baggage, but also offered a look into the likelihood that Dr. Gerald likely had either studied the Knuckles Clan in depth, and maybe even visited Angel Island at one point (otherwise, where'd he get the idea to have a makeshift Master Emerald altar built on a space colony?). Even some of the portable games got in on this, in the form of how Sonic Battle introduced Emerl, a super-advanced robot that's a leftover from yet ANOTHER leftover civilization. Apparently, Dr. Gerald studied this robot on Ark at one point, before it nearly destroyed the place.

And then we got to the answer to "who or what built Emerl" in the form of the game that I think truly kicked off what I think is the best culprit for this. The home of everybody's favorite Sonic game OST: Sonic Chronicles.

There's plenty to be said about Chronicles, in itself, as well as the ensuing infamous lawsuit. But suffice to say, I think that whole incident was enough to cause a deliberate shying away from exploring all those old lore beats further, until the dust settled for things that irate American comic book authors would possibly try to draw up a lawsuit for.

The fact that we're seeing them starting to explore and elaborate on the lore again with Frontiers is yet another good sign, in my eyes. It's another element that made Sonic "un-Mario-like", and part of the reason I came to and stuck around this party for as long as I have!

That Knuckles video is so cool! They animated him gliding and rolling!!!! Gliding and rolling! INTO A BALL!!!! Beyond the super awesome references and amazing animation that gliding and rolling really did it for me! I hated how most animation outside of the games NEVER depicted Knuckles rolling into a ball. I don't ever recall him gliding or rolling in Sonic X either. Did he ball up in the movie?
What ever the case that made me really happy.

I'm always excited to see Tails and Knuckles in ball form. Running around with them in Sonic Adventure was fun for that reason alone for me. So I feel you!

Have we had any Switch gameplay footage or impressions yet?
We had seen snippets of gameplay on Switch a couple of times on Nintendo Directs; as well screenshots are up on eShop;

The Switch version was playable in an event in Japan, and reaction seems favorable, attracting bigger lines from the audience.

I'm surprised no footage came out of that event!

I was looking to buy this for a nephew as a birthday present and I'm laughing at the incompetence of Sony when it comes to regional pricing. So in Mexico the game is 759 MXP in the eshop and Xbox. In PSN? 59.99 USD, because of course Sony doesn't give a shit about LATAM and don't offer regional currency, and they can't adapt the price (as I suspect it's only one store for America).

Wow I'm not used to these voice at all, especially Amy's. She sounds like a completely different character personality wise from what I remembered from the Sonic Adventure titles.

It's been over two decades and different VAs since then I'd say as well. But yeah the voice acting direction is fascinating.

Also I'm looking for all the leaks, especially cyberspace levels.

Looks like that YouTube channel did remove their Sonic frontiers videos. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

I did see on Twitter this morning that the switch version got dumped, so people are playing on emulators now too.

Oh lord, it begins

Switch footage on this thread and some cool movement techniques.

Secured my decision in buying this version since I'm going to be away from my Xbox for the week of release. I'll grab it there someday too.
