The hardware spec thread just got wild. A few days ago I posted a summary of everything going on, which I just had to overhaul. I know we try to keep the pro chatter out of the main thread, but for folks who do want to know what's up without having to read 500 pages of technical chatter, I hope this is useful

Downloading the dem,o now, but for real, the OST is AMAZING already!

Trying to figure something out... assuming I don't get an Epic grant for my game at any point, do you guys think I should do a small Kickstarter once the content is more or less finished so that I can hire/contract some people to do proper UI and texture/modeling work since very clearly that kinda thing is lacking?

Or should I just release the game as is?

Still waiting for Tunic to go up from preorder to prepurchase on the eshop. That should be later today, right? Comes out in seven days.

Summary is much appreciated, thanks compadre.

Has anyone here sent their Joy-Con or Pro Controllers in to be fixed by Nintendo? I know that Nintendo is fixing Joy-Con for free regardless of warranty status (in the U.S., at least), but I’m not sure if that also applies to Pro Controllers, since the “drift” issue with them isn’t the same (it’s basically the opposite of Joy-Con drift; rather than the stick drifting towards a direction, the stick has resistance when tilting it in a direction).

We’ve been putting it off for a long time now, but considering that my partner and I have…let’s see…five pairs of Joy-Con that are drifting and four Pro Controllers that also have stick issues, I think it’s about time we send them in for repair, lol. I guess part of the reason why we’ve been putting it off is because we’re not entirely sure what will happen…

Like, these are the kind of questions I have about the process:
  • Will Nintendo still fix drifting Joy-Con outside of warranty for free if they’ve been very lightly modified? I’m not talking shell swaps or anything like that; all we did was open them up to put some conductive foam inside our launch Joy-Con to fix the connection dropping issue.
    • If not, how must will it cost us? Will they refuse to send our Joy-Con back unless we pay?
  • Will Nintendo fix Pro Controllers for free outside of warranty like with Joy-Con?
    • If not, how much will it cost, and like with the Joy-Con above, will they keep the controllers until we pay or what?
    • If so, do they actually repair the existing controller or just give you a new replacement? If they’re replaced, what will happen to our special edition controllers if we send them in? Will they just send us standard controllers instead, and we’ll lose our special edition ones?!
  • If any of the controllers have other issues, like a shoulder button that doesn’t work, will that be fixed as well, or will we have to pay for that separately?
  • Can we send all of our Joy-Con and Pro Controllers in as one bulk repair order? Or will we have to mail each one out individually…?
  • How long do these repair orders usually take?
I’d appreciate it a bunch if anyone has any answers to these! I’m hoping to maybe send these in sometime this week, today if possible…
Unfortunately I don't have answers myself right now, but I'm looking at sending in my launch joycons (unmodded) soon-ish for drift issues and loss of connectivity with the side rails when I play handheld. I'll do my best to remember to let you know the answers I can provide once I get them back but tag me later in October in case I forget!

However, my understanding is originally they farmed out Joycon repairs to this little game store in Syracuse, NY for a while at first (which is why you often got a different pair back if they couldn't fix it themselves), but since then Nintendo mandated to get your original joycons back in case they're some special edition ones. Leaker discourse is getting spicy these past few days.
Oh? What's the tea?

I didn't hear FLEENSTONES, was this a bonafide GiIvaSunner high quality rip?

I was pleasantly surprised how effortless it is to get access to the Japanese eShop.

I've already sampled a few games on the Super Famicom nso app, very cool!

Do folks have any recommendations for things to check out, especially for a non-speaker?

Does anyone know why sometimes games are $10 cheaper at Walmart?
For a long time, they were selling games at around 17% off. Likely to get traction with people buying from other retailers. I think it really started once best buy and Amazon ended their discounted pre orders. Around the time of Kirby and the forgotten land came out, they stopped lowering the prices. But all the old discounts still maintain, so basically anything from Elden Ring or before is cheaper.

So I've sent mine joy-con once for drift issues, mind you I live in Brazil, so even thought it is part of NoA, I'm not sure how different the policy may be.
They asked me some infos about the codes on the joy-cons, colors and stuff like that and right after sent me the codes of the pre-paid posting to send them the controllers. They did not fix mine, just sent new ones, it was so fast I'm not even sure the ones I've sent had reached them.
Also, my old joy-cons came with my switch that was an UK model I bought before Nintendo had official distribution in the country, they did not care at all.
The e-mail did not mention modified joy-cons, only that hacked switches would not receive repairs at all.
They said to always send the joy-con pairs even if only one of them had the problem, and the e-mail said that only joy-con correction was free of charge and did not need the warranty, but if it was a Pro Controller or a Switch Lite it would be subject to it, and if out of warranty it would be charged.

That's a really hard call, tbh, and it depends on artistic vision

Kickstarters, if they succeed, seem like... idk, too much pressure for me. the logistics are... a lot.

but I think that's the kind of thing that will reveal itself a little more clearly once you have your first "complete" beta build

fresh Grögol Bonanza music for y'all, for the first city after Jorts

also added several tracks to the soundcloud that are less "new" (older songs of mine I haven't heavily modified) that will or will likely be in the game

Hmm, okay, thanks. I’m not concerned with my Joy-Con being replaced since none of those are special editions (though I would like to keep the same colors at the very least), but three of the Pro Controllers are special editions so that’s where I’m mostly concerned… But it sounds like I probably won’t be able to get those repaired for free, anyway… =/ I guess I’ll just have to call Nintendo and see what they say.

How does one know the proper time to pour a large bowl of cereal and binge Cobra Kai?

Because I think I'm gonna pour a large bowl of cereal and binge Cobra Kai.

Haven't sent in any Pro Controllers or special edition controllers so I can't help there, but I have sent in some Joy-Cons before in the US and fwir

-They charge before you ship and they don't add on extra for mods. They send it back unfixed if the mod is a problem.

-They do let you send them in bulk, but they say to send in four Joy-Con max per package because of battery shipping restrictions.

-Repair times usually don't take too long. I got my Joy-Cons back around a week after I sent them off.

Part of it to be honest is that I'm getting a bit tired of waiting like 10 minutes for a texture to load or sometimes hours to build the lighting in a level, it makes getting stuff done in my already limited free time a lot harder. I don't want to commit to spending a ton on a new computer until I'm much farther along but it's hard to get that far along with a crappy laptop. Which is kinda why I was hoping that epic grant application was going to go through at least for enough for a computer.

Maybe Chanukah Claus will be very kind to me this year and get me a new PC.

Awesome, thanks! So if I have to send only four controllers per package, I assume they’ll still set up a repair order for more than that but I’ll just have to send them in multiple packages?

I know im late but damn the title of the game was right in front of us all this time

It would be so much easier for me to make a decision about buying a Steam Deck if they allowed me to install Windows Store games on it
Valve is at some point supposed to release a tool allowing dual boot to be easier, but you'd still be responsible for your own copy of Windows.

I, uh.. this actually looks, like, really good? That would be the biggest turnaround ever if it actually pans out to be playable.

I believe so, but probably not a bad idea to call Nintendo and make sure.

Yeah, but for me the big draw of the SteamOS side is being able to use the suspend feature and it doesn’t sound like it’s supported if you use Windows on it.

I am actually surprised how Square-Enix managed to make fighting in the tutorial of Valkyrie Elyusium so goddamn awful while after actually starting the game in your first quest fighting the undead feels really good and weighty.

Thank you @famicorpse @shoptroll @VolcanicDynamo @SammyJ9 @MissingNo. @Brofield @chocolate_supra for the happy birthday wishes, y’all made my day :)

Volcanic Dynamo, I don’t believe I wished it to you directly, so I hope you had an awesome birthday a few days ago too!

Happy birthday @xghost777! Hopefully you don't let the existential dread set in like I did as I approach 31
😅
Q1
: Favourite cartoons and anime...I'd have to say Futurama is definitely near the top, along with Animaniacs, Avatar: TLA and LoK. Shoutout as well to Bravest Warriors on YouTube (same Pendleton Ward shenanigans you expect from Adventure Time) and OK K.O. for the Captain Planet cameo and other general tomfoolery. Anime I'm not nearly as well versed in, but I'm super late to the party on Sword Art Online and enjoying it so far at episode 7, and one day I really should go back to finish Attack on Titan after season 1.

Q2: Look, I know I stan Custom Robo an uncomfortable amount, but I also think it has some potential to make for a decent anime given the game already seems to follow many common tropes. A cybernetic thriller, murder and mystery about, a little campy humour to lighten the mood and some kickass fight scenes, almost like a tamer Akira (but like...if they did go more mature on the graphic nature of the story events from the gamecube game, that'd be sick too). The human interactions are all 2D animation, but the robot battles are CGI on par with the attract screen from the game.

I think it would have some potential. Would it be a financial time sink and take eight months just to animate one episode? Probably, but damn it would be cool

Ooh great cartoon picks! I love Futurama and the Animaniacs as well. One of my best friends loves Avatar so I finally watched it last year and enjoyed it a lot. Still slowly watching Korra on my end. Your post makes me want to answer the question again for Western cartoons lol. Sword Art is a wild ride that goes off the rails so many times, I think I somehow like it overall in the end. If you do like it check out the movie and spinoff show, those are both super fun! I’ve never played Custom Robo, I really hope I get to one day!
Happy Birthday @xghost777!!! Your gift is.. answers.

Question 1: my favorite is tough to pin down but at the moment my mind keeps coming back to Haibane Renmei. It was one of the most captivating and moving series I had seen at the time, with sweet characters, lovely background/environment design, and wonderful music. OP here:

There's like two seconds that could be mistaken for NSFW at a glance, but given the context and presentation I don't think it's bad

Also shout-out to Honey and Clover, which I fell in love with at around the same time.

Question 2: I've had ideas rattling in my head for like 20 years as to how to adapt Chrono Trigger into a film trilogy. Basically as soon as I saw Jackson's Lord of the Rings my head went "THIS! This is how CT should be done."
I thought to start each film with a prologue that gives context to essential things that happen outside the timeframe of the main story (like Glenn's flashbacks of him and Cyrus and how Magus frogged him, or the "bad end" scene in the Arris command center), and was filling plotholes with theories from Chrono Compendium. For example, if the Masamune was created from Crono stabbing the Mammon Machine with the Ruby Knife, then how was the Masamune created before Crono's intervention? Easy, Melchior did it initially, was planning to all along, and only handed it to Crono once he intervened (so the player can be the driving force of the plot). So in my version, Melchior would do it himself and Crono would only be there witnessing. I think it'd be good to give more stuff like that to the supporting cast since you don't need the main character to do everything in a movie like they tend to in games. And of course, Mitsuda composing the score.

um

I could go on and on but suffice to say this has been in my head for a long-ass time. 😅

Answers make a great gift! I 100% need to watch Haibane Renmei. When Crunchyroll lost a bunch of Funimation shows a few years ago, I saw a bunch of first episodes and then bought Blu Rays of ones I liked on sale over the years. I have a copy of Haibane Renmei from then, just need to watch it!

I’ve never thought about how downright rad a Chrono Trigger anime would be. Yo. Now I really want one!
This is like asking me to pick children… but I’d say the 3 Getter Robo OVA’s often fight for that top slot for me so I’ll go with the one with my fave OP, Shin Vs Neo Getter Robo. It’s closer to a movie at 3 episodes but it’s a really fun what if we changed the ending of the original Getter Robo manga and led it directly into Getter Robo Go after the time skip. Just a lot of fun dynamic action and it mixes the dna of the manga and a lot of nods to the Toei cartoon.

Magic Knight Rayearth is another one high up my list, a really skillful blend of Isekai, mecha and magical girl, the second part has one of my all time favorite anime ptsd arcs, and does a great job of addressing what the consequences of them suceeding were. It also a pretty well regarded Sega Saturn jrpg

As for question 2, Getter Robo would make one heck of a character action game. The main pilot is a karate master, the second is a weapon user and a counter specialist and the third is a judo master. They all use guns, and this is before we get into the giant robot where you can have a mix of ace combat sections with a mix of form 1 and getter change maneuvering in jet form, and then ground combat, and even underwater combat in Getter 3.

I definitely need to watch more Giant Robot anime! I’ll have to look into these! Also yes, there needs to be more giant robot games, not nearly enough out there!

Yeah, but for me the big draw of the SteamOS side is being able to use the suspend feature and it doesn’t sound like it’s supported if you use Windows on it.
Yeah this is the biggest reason I'm not super interested in using Windows on Steam Deck

Suspend support is a big deal

I believe so, but probably not a bad idea to call Nintendo and make sure.
Yeah, I’m gonna call them anyway to set up the repair order, but I just wanted to get an idea of what to expect before doing so since phone calls are intimidating for me. =P

On Getter, since the Ova’s are all stand alone what if universes, my suggestion is usually New Getter Robo(only one that starts from the top and is a complete classic team story that mixes all the manga and a bunch of the author’s other work), then Shin vS Neo (it’s basically a movie, it gives you some bigger lore in a more standard timeline and is pretty fun overall), and then wrap it up with Shin Getter Robo Armageddon (it’s very much it’s own timeline but it expects you’ve had a good exposure to getter).
Arc is a direct adaption of the fifth manga so you have to read the preceding ones first and the old Toei shows are well old Toei shows.

Mazinger Edition Z aka shin Mazinger is highly recommended, Rayearth as well
