Pre-Release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-Release Discussion Thread

Just rewatched the botw trailers and saw that Link was basically dressed the same in most shots with the Champions tunic and hylian pants. Some scenes have him in flashes of the warm dublet, the armor set, or one instance of the worn out clothes. Would make sense that they hide a lot of extra stuff in the trailers to be able to surprise players. That being said, would love the climbing gear to come back as I mainly exclusively play botw wearing that set dyed beige lolol
Im hoping that the shots we see link in the clothing we're familiar with is just the beginning of the game. The other shots of toga link im hoping are just after the beginning.

We are in uncharted waters with the marketing cycle for major Zelda games. Typically Nintendo heavily leans on E3 for Zelda marketing and leaves the 3d Zelda's out of the normal directs. The only time Botw was shown in a non E3 direct was 10 seconds in 2015 after TP HD was revealed. For now we have no clue how or when the game will be shown next. Hopefully it is in the next Direct, but it could be the game awards, or even a dedicated Zelda event. We just have to be patient, something will have to happen here in the next 6 months unless there is another significant delay.

One thing I was wondering. If Nintendo launchs BOTW2 as a cross gen while Switch is still healthy maybe the majority of people would choose to play it on Switch instead of the new hardware. So the idea of using Zelda to create demand for the new hardware could have no/little effect.

At the same time, if their choice is to launch it exclusively for the new hardware they could end up sacrificing the game sales as the hardware could be less successful or even a bomba(though unlikely).

TP and BOTW were on different situations. They launched cross gen to fulfill their promises with people that bought the less popular platforms(GC and WiiU). In those cases most people didn't have the GC and Wii U so buying the new platform was the best choice for them to play the new Zelda game. Now most people already have Switch so the main demand would be from people that want to play the game within it's best form.

At this rate we will see new videos about the mysterious Zonai again.

Every time I see their videos about the Zonai and its involvement in BotW2, I always laugh and say ā€œitā€™s going to end being Sheikah magic, canā€™t wait for their disappointmentā€.

I don't see a scenerio where Botw2 has a separate version, or is exclusive to the New Switch. I think the expectation is there may be some exclusive games later on, but the new system will share the current library, and most games going forward.

There wonā€™t be another delay, we just have to sit tight.

The Zonai may not play an active role in the sequel, but I'd be shocked if there wasn't either more references to them, or revealing some kind of connection to the events of the game.

I think they're one of the most captivating aspects of Zelda lore recently, mostly because of all the mystery surrounding them. So I don't expect that every question will be answered. That's what makes them so much fun to theorize about.

The date was June 11th, 2019. 1162 days ago. One of the biggest mic drops by Nintendo. Still watching that trailer from time to time, crossing for finally more news next month.

Yeah, I'm semi-expecting/really hoping for a new trailer in the next 2-5 weeks. By then, 5-6 months will have passed since the delay (in my opinion the delay was ~5 months, pretty short relative to game development) and the game will be only 6-8 months away by then.

I just want to have something to discuss, if anything. The discussions are so dead right now and when I get in a Zelda mood there's just nothing to really engage with. Just waiting for that big trailer to bask in the glory of this series again.

But the truth is, with how popular BotW still is they don't need a big lenghty marketing cycle. So it really is a new situation for Zelda.

Im more confused that they did not have a smaller scale zelda release (port, remastere, remake, a new 2D zelda, spinoff) for this year. I hoped for a new 2D zelda, expectedd a port of the WiiU Remasters, but nothing.

In regards to BotW2... we will hear about new hardware later this year, and there we will also hear news about zelda. or we will get news in a fall direct without new hardware. i would not expect it before late september, and since the anouncements where will mid august, i honestly dont expect a september direct, more an october or november direct to be honest.

I'm really gonna try to go full blackout mode for this game, beyond what's been shown which I have seen. I think there's much more than that, including underground and underwater exploration, but whatever's in there would be fun to discover in the actual game.

Definitely gonna be difficult to not look at anything whenever it shows up, so for me it's all good if they don't want to show it for a while šŸ˜‰

this game is taking so long because the demand for playable Zelda was so overwhelming after the first trailer they reworked the whole thing. do not @ me on this

Still think playable Zelda is best done as a spin-off thing rather than something that needs to be in the main series. Though admittedly BotW2 is a better time than ever to put it in a 3D game.

I would like "Zelda intermissions" like the Peach segments in the first two Paper Mario games, though, whether those be cutscenes or short playable segments.

Either they had playble Zelda in mind since the before first trailer, or she won't be playable.
I agree. I think sheā€™ll be playable, thereā€™s an interview where the IGN Director asked Aonuma about playable Zelda and he said it was an interesting question, ā€œItā€™s kind of interesting that you bring that up, because in Breath of the Wild, you see Zelda and Link together often too, so to go straight into the thought of co-op is very interesting to me.ā€

I think they seriously thought about the idea, we will hopefully soon see whether they made her a playable character.

youā€™ll all be sad you doubted me when they reveal 2 completely different versions where you play as link or zelda respectively

Exact same plan here! All I want to know at this point is the title and release date! šŸ“…

I just can't wait for the next trailer to reveal the main gimmick along with the title, and expanding our understanding of what that game really is as a result.

Like think back at the time right before E3 2016, and what we knew about "Zelda Wii U". We had the reveal trailer, Aonuma telling us it was open world, and the gameplay snippet where we saw Link riding a horse. But none of that prepared us for that E3 trailer (the best BotW trailer in my opinion) showing us the survival aspect of the game. Hanging out in the wild, taming horses, hunting boars, cooking food, starting fires, using the environment to defeat monsters, cutting trees to create a path, the physics system... And then the title to go along with it and that made perfect sense all of a sudden. It was one hell of a statement about what that game really was at its core, something we had no idea minutes prior.

We're still in pre-"E3 2016" with Botw 2. I'm just waiting for the game to give us this moment, it'll be glorious.

We are like 3 weeks away of the new BoTW 2 trailer, and most likely we finally get the official name of the game, this bring me memmories from "Zelda U" before the E3 2016.

My final preview of this game will be the next trailer and after that I'm on a Zelda blackout too.
BotW discourse and speculation was all fun until a lot of shit turned out to be way too on point to a point where it spoiled the final experience for me.

Just rewatched the old trailers again and I wanted to know your thoughts on something in the 2021 trailer. Since I first watched the trailer, I found parts of the music playing when Link goes through the ground of the floating platform to sound quite similar to the music for the City in the Sky from Twilight Princess. Do you guys hear it too or no? Does that mean Ooccoos will be in the sequel lol (the last part is more of a joke but I would die laughing if they were back)

I think the Oocca could be much more loved if they were redesigned like the BotW Rito tbh.

And while it would be nice for the BotW2 sky to tie together the City in the Sky and/or Skyloft to BotW's era, I don't think it would gel well with the semi-standalone nature of most Zelda games.

Ooccoos were probably inspired by an Escher painting apparently, I donā€™t think theyā€™ll make another significant appearance in Zelda games.

I listened to the ooccoo city sky theme and the BOTW2 20221 trailer sky music, I hear a vague resemblance, but I wouldnā€™t say theyā€™re too similar. I donā€™t know who is composing the music for BOTW2 though, that could play a factor.

I know it is still waaaaaaay too early to tell considering we know next to nothing about plot and game mechanics for BoTW 2, but I wonder if there is a chance of there possibly being a 3rd Zelda game set in the BoTW world.

I expect they exhausted every idea they had for this sequel with their original intention of adding big DLC to the first game. There would be no reason to revisit the same world again not with Nintendo. I don't think people would take kindly to that.

Depends. So far it SEEMS like the original map is suplementary to the new layers they're adding: Sky and underworld. If there's a whole new game's worth of map in 2, I don't think people would be hostile against the third adding another game's worth of map on.

It just depends on how they handle 2. So for now, I think I would prefer that they create an entirely new map for a third game. Somewhere outside of Hyrule.

Oh I personally believe it could work, that's for sure. But I think Mario and Zelda are 2 of the most important franchises that are supposed to propel Nintendo's gaming image forward. Both in graphical style and gameplay execution. They embody the innovation Nintendo strives to make. I can almost taste the doom and gloom people will tout when they decide to do a third entry in their flagship series as their big thing for the year without bringing anything new to the table, I believe at this point it's what people became to expect.

I agree with you in thinking the only way that people would accept a third game without the doom and gloom is if it was set in an entirely new land/region of the world. Which honestly I am okay with, for the longest time wind waker was my favorite Zelda game, but now after the innovation of BoTW and how long I spent in that world I can honestly say BOTW is now my favorite game and this very of link and Zelda are my personal favorites. I want to spend more time with these characters and have more adventures.

If they just make more game in the Wild Era, there will be no chance for us to grow attached to a new Link and Zelda.

If we need a third game of any kind, it should be one that's connected to the Wild Era but separated by many years, the same way WW and TP were connected to OoT and MM as the whole "Hero of Time Saga".

I now realize BOTW is just the OG power rangers.

OG power rangers starts with a villain being released after 10,000 years and then a group of 5 teenagers get powers and giant mechanical animals to fight giant bad guys.

BOTW has a villain being released after 10,000 years then a group of 5 champions with powers get giant mechanical animals (except Link, but then Link gets 1 in DLC) to fight a giant bad guy.

Can't wait for the divine beasts to combine and form the megabeast in BOTW2.

Well, I am not asking for all Zelda games to take place in the Wild era from now on, I am more just saying/thinking if the possibility of there being a 3rd wild era game that I wouldn't mind. There are always going to be new Zelda games that have a new version of Link and Zelda and either a new land/region or another reimagined version of Hyrule.

I agree, this could also be a way to still be in the wild era Hyrule, but still be different and unique while having the descendants of the characters we love. It could even differentiate itself by introducing more technology, maybe like how phantom hourglass and spirit tracks have steamboats and the steam train.

Yep, it have a sentai theme plus a Voltron ( or other similar robot) team composition, bodytype and personality.

BotW was originally targeted for 2015, so less than 3 years from the 'rethink the conventions of Zelda' announcement just after the Wii U came out. It ended up coming out less than 3 years after they showed the concept footage at e3 2014. I have a hard time thinking that the sequel was announced if they knew it would take longer than that, maybe a late 2021 or early 2022 target originally.

Am sure it targeted late 2021 when they announced it. Holiday 2020 was always about Hyrule Warriors AOC even before Covid hit.

We did have @C.Tsubasa mention they'd heard Zelda was planned for 2020, but it's possible it was a case of wires getting crossed. If he'd heard there was a 3D BotW looking game being developed, AoC would fit the bill. I'd speculate 2021 wasn't even the plan w/out COVID.

Ironic considering it was thought to be a quick turnaround sequel using the same map. I know, covid and everything, but still. Ironic.

Intentionally or not, that 'same hyrule' statement from Aonuma certainly did a great deal to dampen expectations for the game. It'll probably end up working in their favor in the end if they pull off something as exciting to play as Breath of the Wild was the first time. And before anybody says something like that isn't possible - just look at how so many gamers responded to Elden Ring like it was the second coming; There's absolutely room to be floored with a sequel.
