I still haven't got what I wanted... Another new IP. Switch's new first party IP game has been pretty pathetic. Excluding casual/gimmicky software we have had two so far: Arms and Astral Chain. We need more. A lot more.

But I'm feeling it. This E3, Nintendo's big reveal will be a new IP.
I think this has been mentioned before, but Nintendo has been releasing at least 1 new ip a year. Arms(2017), Sushi Strikers(2018), Astral Chain (2019), Ring Fit (2019), Good Job(2020), Buddy Mission: Bond (2021) and others I might have missed. So yeah while they may not be for everyone, they are at least trying new ideas and games in comparison to others.

I don't know if this is the place to ask, but does somebody here knows the name of a manga (I don't think it has been adapted into an anime) where the main character is a high school student that wants to make a gacha game?
I remember it being referenced in the pipeline Discord once, in a discussion about how mobile gaming is perceived in Japan.

I specifically said "excluding casual software" as Nintendo's most casual games are one off. And Sushi Strikers was first announced on 3DS. That leaves us with 2 games Arms and Astral Chain (and Buddy Mission if Nintendo ever decides to localize it).

Not sure if I consider Nintendo published indie games like Fluidity, Kerploosh, Ketzal's Corridors, Stretchers or Good Job as new IP's as they all were one hit wonders. They do belong to Nintendo but done after the games release.

But going from your "we need more", well all their teams are busy and unless they expand, which they are doing, you wont see a "big" new ip. The biggest candidate at the moment is Grezzo and Monoliths second team (and maybe Good Feel).

Apparently if you've been looking to get an Xbox Series X, today is (was?) the day. Lots of them in stock from what I hear (in the US at least.)

Having 2 big, new, non-casual IPs seems actually pretty good for a Nintendo console generation? Not being facetious, I'm genuinely trying to recall.

Wii had the various Wii Sports titles, not sure if you count that as casual or not and what else? Endless Ocean? Disaster: Day of Crisis? Wii U didn't have... any? Except effectively making Bayonetta home there. Right?

Second! I'm all for sharing artwork.
Yeah! They make great stuff! I always loved his Metroid artwork. I like how the art is kinda zommed out and tels a story itslef. If Orioto could post stuff here I'd love it. Especially since I don't havbe any social media anymore so no way to follow them.

Wii U had Splatoon! That was new IP then Otherwise I agree that 2 new IP is pretty good. I count the casual stuff too (loved ringfit) but then I also want more new IP too

I actually was comparing it to the past handhelds. 3DS had quite a few of them: Steel Diver, Ever Oasis, Tank Troopers, Codename Steam, Pushmo, Dillon series...

DS was not bad either: Nintendogs, Another Code, Hotel Dusk, Jam with the Band, Elite Beat Agents, Fossil Fighters, western debuts of Starfy and Glory of Heracles, Japan only Jet Impulse, ASH and Soma Bringer...

On Wii we had few: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Endless Ocean, FlingSmash and Japan only Reginleiv and Captain Rainbow (damn Nintendo, localize your damn games)

But overall, Nintendo always is less likely to invest on new IP's and that's the only part I don't like about them. However in the recent interview, Furukawa said they'll focus on new IP's more, so there's a reason to be hopeful about the future.

Arms isn't really "non-casual" though, it just failed to capture the casual audience.

It's a crossover appeal game, which is fine. That's mostly what Nintendo specializes in. But some of its design facets I think are polarizing to both camps, I don't think as a new IP it plays particularly well to the hardcore camp either.

Hope Buddy Mission Bond comes out someday in the West 🙏

You're not going to see as many new IPs going forward from studios that have well established franchises. Games simply cost too much and take too long to make nowadays. Before you could reasonably release a sequel from your established franchise, hop onto making a brand new IP, and still have enough time to pump out another franchise sequel with enough time. Now you finish a game and it's highly like you're gonna be spending the next 5 years working on the sequel. Even a highly efficient studio like From has essentially stopped working on other IPs and they just make Souls-like games.

Arms did have an alternative button control scheme (unlike the pure casual Switch Sports), Nintendo held tournaments for the game and even there was a comic book adaptation planned by Dark Horse. Nintendo clearly anticipated a core fanbase for the game.

If a sequel happens, Nintendo would definitely evolve the game on every front. Bigger arenas, lots more customization, countless new combos...

Both IntSys and GoodFeel expressed interest in creating more new IP's and that's more than enough for me. My two of most favorite Nintendo affiliated studios.

Jesus Christ I just caught up on the GT Microtransactions and what a major, major fuck-up by Sony. Thank god Nintendo didn't pull anything like that with Mario Kart (on their consoles, lol).

It hurts to see them continue to sink lower and lower with their business practices. Now I don't even think I'll grab a PS5 after a price cut / necessary slim model lol.

EDIT: removed reference to a certain game and put in proper thread after seeing it

I don't think it's an issue of want. There's probably a backlog of game ideas piled up at Nintendo and other devs. It's just a matter of allocating resources. Making a new IP is gonna come at a cost. Work on the next Fire Emblem or make something brand new? Not every can be satisfied unfortunately. Heck, there are existing Nintendo franchises that aren't getting new games while newer franchises such as Xenoblade and Splatoon are getting new ones.

About a year or so ago l I found some places doing online autograph signings. Some started up due to the pandemic. I have ordered some from these places and I trust them for being authentic.

What I have now is an autograph signed by Patricia Summersett, the voice of Princess Zelda herself from BotW

I don't think the situation is that dire. Koei has already taken over FE franchise and that allowed IntSys to work on Paper Mario. No one knows what they'll do next. A new IP is definitely on the cards, they have created 2 new IP's on 3DS alone. Same goes for Grezzo, they found time to do Ever Oasis on 3DS. Now that Furukawa is also on board of the idea of more new IP's, it's likelier than ever.

I'm really wondering on what game Sakurai could work next. Another revival? Smash is definitely off the equation and Kid Icarus seems unlikely.

I wouldn't say Smash is "definitely off the equation" at all.

In fact, I think it's his most likely next project, and anything else would be a surprise.

Sakurai made a pretty big deal about Ultimate ending the decade long development of Smash that started with Smash 4 back in like 2012. It'd be pretty anti-climatic for him to just start working on the next Smash right away anyways.

Taking like a 3 month break was basically a decade for Sakurai

As @Dinoman96 says, he really focused on Smash Ultimate being the end of a cycle. He could totally direct Smash again one day or at least be a producer but I think he wants to work on something else now.

What happen with GT?

They’re just trying to fund all their games since they don’t make enough money for them. Heard that PlayStation Plus has way to few subscribers to compensate.

/s

In all seriousness. I don’t necessarily have an issue with GAAS. But my issues are with the predatory and scummy ways of handling it. Goes live after reviews? Come on, If you’re going about hiding it, then you know it’s being greedy

Just completed 1 route in Triangle Strategy and just wanted to say that this game has exceeded my expectations in every way and I can confidently say that Triangle Strategy is without a doubt the best Team Asano game of all time.

Please play it, it's a AMAZING game.

I second this. Just finished my first route earlier

Hoping for Tunic shadow drop and Valheim 1.0 release on Switch. It's also time Bugsnax appeared elsewhere.

I’m guessing Tunic has at least 6 months exclusivity on Xbox so that might be saved for later this year. I’d love Valheim, Weird West and Nobody Saves the World.

Anyone see the rumour that we may get an Indie World on 23rd?

In 2021 their spring Indie Direct was in April, in 2020 it was in March, so there is precedent for both months.

But with GDC happening earlier this year (March 21st-25th)}, that might push the direct in March's favor.

Didn't the devs say there isn't any exclusivity deal between them and MS? Even if there was, it wouldn't be 6 months. Death's Door's exclusivity only lasted 4 months.

All I have seen online is that it’s Xbox timed exclusive? I think there is a tweet from one of the devs a couple of years ago confirming this but I can’t find it atm.

The booster course tracks offer an interesting look at what a Switch exclusive Mario Kart might have looked like, since unlike the base tracks they're no longer held back by the limitations of the Wii U. Biggest difference is the track textures, which really benefit from the jump from 1GB to 3.2GB of RAM, noticeably much sharper.
