Definitely picking up BDSP next month, but wondering if I should pick up either Mario Party or SMT V. On a limited budget so can't do both, but the classic Mario parties are incredible. And I never played the series but smt v looks great. Any thoughts, Fami?
Hmm, it depends really like Mario Party will be great if you have people around to play with and like party games a lot. However, SMT will likely be a meaty Jrpg with a great turn base combat system

So it's hard really. What kind of games do you enjoy a lot.

From what I seen, every anime/manga that doesn't appeal to western sensibilities, like Cowboy Bebop or Vinland Saga, gets the "generic anime" insult at least once, so no surprise that people are using that against a franchise that takes a lot of inspiration from Japan.

Tbh my problem stemmed from someone saying SMT was generic anime while Persona isn't.

Edit: My first dp lol

I DO tend to enjoy lengthy jrpgs, particularly Pokemon. The biggest issue for me with Mario party is a lack of people to play with regularly IRL, and a shoddy internet connection could make online play problematic.

If you like Pokémon you will most certainly like SMTV. It has that same collectionism and party customization hook.

Yea if that's the case I would recommend SMT V since it will be a lengthy Jrpg.

I do hope they release a small demo near release tho.

That depends. If you're looking more for a party game to have fun with friends and make them your enemies? Go with MP. Some of the most fun I've ever had. But if you're gonna be playing alone and like JRPGs but perhaps want one that's a little unique from the others when it comes to setting, aesthetic, and appeal, go for SMT

I think we all just need to retire using 'anime' in a blanket negative way to describe something, because it means literally nothing. Anime is a medium, not a genre. That's like saying 'man this looks like such a generic animated movie' or 'ugh this is just generic film', it's a pointless descriptor.

Now, you can narrow it down to a complaint that actually means something, like: 'This looks like generic high school slice of life anime', or 'ugh this is so generic overdone shoujo tournament anime' or 'man this is really generic magical girl anime'. And those aren't perfect either, but at least they point you in the right direction and give you a general idea. Saying 'ewww anime' is useless.

Whenever someone uses anime as an insult, I just think man I would really like this then. Nine out of ten times that line of thought ends up being true. lol

To me it's a bit xenophobic too. Imagine if people called The Last of Us, Uncharted, GTA and Red Dead "generic Nicholas Cage/Adam Sandler style". I'm pretty sure that sounds silly, so I think calling every japanese aesthetic generic anime or even saying anime style is generic by itself is silly.
Even in anime themselves you see a huge variety of art styles. It's not like JoJo, Devilman Crybaby and Shingeki no Kyojin have any common art style in their animations and design.

SMTIV is a great hopping on point and a wonderful game. Apocalypse directly ties into its late game story so I wouldn’t start there.

Apocalypse is a direct sequel to one of the routes in the original SMTIV (or rather, the beginning of Apocalypse takes place near the end SMT4's story, only for events to diverge from the original)

SMTIV is a fantastic starting point, though. That's where I started. Just know that the early game is pretty brutal, but it gets easier as you move on.

I say go with SMT 4 as it has a lot of Qol additions compared to Nocturne. Like there aren't any random encounters in the game. I think 4 is easier to get into than Nocturne imo.

Start with 4 than Apocolypse since the latter is a sequel.
Thank you all very much!!! For some reason I misunderstood Apocalypse as a prequel so that's why I was thinking about playing it first, thank you for explaining. Seems like a great experience and something I'll get myself playing hours and hours just like P5 and I really like that, as the more time I spent playing a good game the less I get depressed or worried.
Will download it to play on Citra on my phone right away!!!
The other game I'm playing is Fire Emblem on a GBA emulator and I really love everything about it, I'm on chapter 16 iirc.

Thanks y'all! Definitely leaning towards SMT V now.

For the last twenty minutes I've been mindlessly scrolling my social media on my phone because I couldn't decide between playing the Halo 1 campaign on MCC or Pikmin via Dolphin.

Help. I could also play MH Rise, but...ehh, I did yesterday and I'm not feeling like going down two floors to my basement to get to my Switch

I’ve heard both SMT 3 and 4 have rough beginnings so maybe 5 might actually be a good starting point 🤔

I need to get around to these games soon enough regardless.

Play Halo 1 and pretend you are killing Pikmin when shooting the Flood.

Godbless (also I realized my Gamecube adapter is downstairs connected to my Switch so I guess the decision really was made for me all this time 😅)

Now I need to decide if I want to play Metroid Dread or AI: The Somnium Files. I'm kinda feeling the itch for Dread but I'm also pretty tired today so I might relax with AI.

It's not that they have rough beginnings, but more like after so much time the game expects you to have a pretty good grasp of the battle mechanics and usually throws a boss at you to test that. Most complaints I've seen come from people who think they can breeze through these games like they're Final Fantasy and just spam attack.

Haha that’s fair. I’m sure I can manage them.

How does 3 run on Switch? Debating that or PS4.

I can write a whole paper on this, but yeah anime hate has plenty of imperialistic/orientalistic traits:
  • The hate for feminine traits in characters, you can see this a lot of this against Nomura artsyle. The west always has envisioned itself as strong and masculine, and femininity is seen as undesirable
  • The perception of anime as static and monolithic (ie 'generic anime')
  • The desire for 'improving' anime by adding western tropes and removing anime tropes ("Persona 5 looks cool, but what if it were adults instead of lame high school students?")

Honestly it runs pretty good, I only play handheld and while there is a little slowdown during some battle animations they don't ruin the experience.

The Good place, the Bad place, and Mindy St. Claire's house.

Regarding the "anime" debate:
When Xenoblade DE was announced the Xenoblade community I was in was trashing the game HARD, saying things like "Takahashi is chasing a fad and trying to turn Xenoblade into anime" and "Xeno used to be so cool and mature, why did they have to turn it into anime?" and at one point I started sharing screenshots from the anime cutscenes from Xenogears back in 1998 and they got maaaaad 🤣

Now that I know Dread is brilliant I regret not getting the special edition. Better yet: sell the artbook separately, Nintendo!

I don't think wanting JRPGs/Japanese games to move away from high school-aged characters, especially when they are often overtly sexualised, has anything to do with 'removing anime tropes' or 'adding western tropes'.

It's possible to be critical of a medium that originated in a specific culture without being xenophobic.

I know it's frustrating for people to dismiss games based on the visual style alone, but there's plenty of legitimate reasons 'anime' games like Persona 5 put a lot of people off.

Lol that was the strangest one to me. Somehow Xenoblade Chronicles wasn't always Anime. I get that the Wii's hardware couldn't show everything off properly but it was obvious what they were aiming for 😆

Alright, pre-order for Mario Party Superstars is in. Saw all I needed to get hype. They could really put it over the top by announcing post-launch free board DLCs...

Didn't mercury steam originally want to remake fusion? I wonder if that is their next project
Nah, I think Fusion is good as it is. Nintendo just needs to make it available on the Switch and we're golden. If Mercury Steam is working on any Metroid, I want it to be Metroid 6. Let's see what kind of bold new story they can tell in this universe now that they've wrapped up the original story arc.

Anyone else super excited for Mario Party (don't look at my avatar!!!)? I played these so much with family as a kid. Now I can play with my sister again who lives in London now (I'm in USA). Online is gonna make me get a Mario Party for the first time since Mario Party 8.

Fusion would fit well in Dread’s engine and I’d definitely prefer it to remaking super, but it’s really not needed

Anyway I hope EDGE comes through with Dread review and helps it get the 90 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Criticizing sexualized designs is ok. The hate that Japanese high-schoolers get from some white/western people is definitely weird.

Yeah I only really played the first three and I have been asking for online since what 7?

I do wish it was a brand new game vs just a collection of the first three again, but I'll take it for now since I can actually play with people.

I’ve got my fingers crossed the shop is hiding unlockable characters and map(even if some are post release) definitely hyped to play with the fam during thanksgiving week

Yeah, but they added that after how long? lol So just chose to wait for one that had it build in and no offense to Super but I know all of my friends will just simply move on to the new one. So no sense to spend the $40-60 for it .

I think the first area in SMT3 is really memorable, the game hits you straight away with that creepy atmosphere and I knew immediately I was in for something special.

I think most of the people who don't like the game are complaining about its difficulty. It's not supposed to be a game that you only play for the story, it really is about learning its mechanics and using what the game gives you to solve the bosses, almost like puzzles. It's really really good, but if someone goes in expecting a regular JRPG experience they might be frustrated.

I'm honestly happy it's a collection, since this is prime nostalgia for me and my family haha.

I don't think people hate japanese high schoolers specifically as much as they feel uncomfortable playing a game where dating plays a big role and you're doing it with underage girls. It makes sense that Persona moves on to older characters because it would make it a lot less problematic.

I don't think anyone will be bothered by the main cast of SMTV being high schoolers for example because romance won't be an element (unless there's sexualization).

Persona 5 was a bad example for the reason you mentioned. However I've seen people dismiss entire animes and games just for having a middle/high school setting.
