So is there a team here for no Direct?

Honestly, Nintendo could be comparing the cost of directs to what they did in 2020. And perhaps see that Directs aren't worth it.
Uhh, why on earth would they think that lol. Especially when literally every other company is doing their own Directs now.

while I don't think this is impossible, why would anyone who thinks this have a team here?

I hadn’t even thought about Bayo 3, it still feels like a believe it when I see it type of thing despite getting a fullblown trailer last year lol

Hoping it gets the astral chain treatment with august release date in February direct

I honestly forgot about it, too. Maybe this really will be 2019 2.0 and we get Fire Emblem in July and Bayo 3 in August (and that means Zelda is totally coming out in September, right? Right?)

I don't know, I have this odd feeling that it may not happen. Why would Nintendo need directs? Furukawa is a very number based, data driven person. And if video game sales in the quarters and terms without directs were the same and/or greater than those with. Why should they continue it? Especially considering how much time and budget goes into your typical Nintendo direct. It may be easier to just release trailers for games in their own time.

It's probably not that likely. But I do have this sinking feeling maybe we wont get them this year.

Wouldn't every other company doing it, means that it has less of a presence, by standing out less? This is literally the reason why Nintendo directs got so popular, it was because no one else was doing anything like it. It would make sense to transition to a new marketing strategy so that Nintendo can stand out above other gaming companies.

woah. War flashbacks to the directs are dead narrative of 2020. We were down BAD.

Please don’t bring that back :(
I mean, regardless of what we are talking about, Nintendo is going to do what they do.

But honestly, it's not like not having directs takes away games.

Like I said earlier, I dont want directs to be dead. However, considering the entire higher up board of Nintendo has changed recently, I can see some shakeups happening.

I mean, this would’ve been more valid a year ago, but they literally brought directs back after a hiatus. That was a sign of things returning to “normal”

I feel like that “maybe they aren’t worth it anymore” decision would’ve been made after 2020. We’ve had a year of regular directs since then.

Having this conversation after last year is so incredibly silly lmao. Nintendo clearly sees value in Directs, they wouldn’t have come back after 2020 in the first place if they were planning on phasing them out.

Is it possible they had a conversation about possibly being done with them? Sure, in fact I think it’s quite likely those discussions were had throughout 2020. But they came to an answer. It’s obvious they see Nintendo Direct as a huge part of their brand.

Shakeups perhaps but this is clearly one aspect that works and a rare case of Nintendo having set the trend that other companies finally embraced and not the other way around. This format of show is more popular than ever, and the viewership for these things justifies not just main Directs but Directs that focus solely on specific games.

Digital presentations might evolve over time, but this is one aspect that isn't going to just stop.

1) you do know there were Directs in 2020, right? There was a large gap that happened to be exactly during the start of a global pandemic that fundamentally altered the way society would function, but after they adjusted they went right back to directs. Actually IIRC there were more directs in 2020 than in 2021!

2) Furukawa is the one who said every year for them is "do or die" in this business. He's absolutely not the type of president to rest on his laurels and just stop doing something that has historically been so effective just because sales are good right now. The idea that he would do that runs absolutely contrary to everything he's ever said as president of Nintendo.

Nintendo went out of their way to keep the Direct branding in 2020 and returned to using it as soon as possible. The idea that they ever dropped the branding or format is pretty false. Not getting our 40 minute general presentations isn't the same thing as Nintendo dropping or retiring the Direct branding and concept.

And no, there hasn't been some board shake up recently that could lead to Directs being dropped - Directs were an Iwata era initiative which have already survived two changes in management.

To this day I will never understand why anyone had this fear Directs we're going away in 2020. There was (and still is) zero logic to that idea.

I couldn't help roll my eyes anytime I saw someone saying that. It's like they ignored what was happening that year. Everything was cancelled.

Also, the idea that there were any corporate shakeups that would lead to the death of Directs when the two hosts, Takahashi and Koizumi, literally are the heads of EPD and are on the board of directors, just doesn’t add up.

The whole reason for Directs existing in the first place was to get out news about new and upcoming games without it first having to pass through a hostile press. We’re talking late Wii years when the big gaming sites were probably the primary source of news about games and most of them had found a certain audience which vehemently hated anything sub-HD, non-realistic or ‘casual’, so anything Nintendo announced was either sidelined, ignored altogether or reluctantly reported with a huge dose of pessimism and contempt.

I can totally see why, a decade later when press surrounding Nintendo’s games tends to be more positive and social media has all but killed off the reliance on those big gaming sites, that after a year with no Directs some people might assume Nintendo were moving on from them. They were wrong, but I see why someone could think that.

The issue is we haven't had a year without Directs - 2020 had game specific Directs, a Mini Direct, and a whole host of partner showcases which still used the Direct branding. It is fundamentally incorrect to say there weren't Directs in 2020. This isn't splitting hairs or being pedantic - Nintendo repeatedly used the Direct branding that year.

People need to be a bit more levelheaded about these things and not always assume the worst "because it’s Nintendo". For a year plus we had to listen to people say that Nintendo was 100% done with Animal Crossing because they had already gotten money out of people so there was no reason for them to work on more content. Just relax.

I doubt it. Directs give hype. Much more than a random twitter post.

Sure, they don't need it at all. But their Directs, Indie Worlds changed the gaming announcements we see now. We are happy to see commercials of games :p

I can’t believe we had to discuss Nintendo Directs not going away lol. Literally, this works and everyone else is doing it. There’s not some new marketing that’s going to replace directs. They’ve only expanded on their shapes and sizes since its inception.

So, is February 8th the rumored date for the Direct, or for the announcement of the Direct?
The 8th would presumably be an announcement date, given the general presentations tend to air on Wednesdays or Thursdays. I don't think there's a consensus or rumour pointing to which date in February a Direct will happen, but the general rule of thumb would be by the middle of the month (so up to the 18th).

Up until last year Nintendo seemed to follow a pattern whereby one year presentations would happen on a Wednesday and the next year would have general Directs on a Thursday. For whatever reason, they dropped that last year with Directs happening on both Wednesday and Thursday in 2021.

It is better to set up your minds on the second full week of February so that you don't get too anxious waiting for the announcement.

But more probably than not, it is going to be on the 1st full week, around 9th/10th.

Since we are getting a second Triangle Strategy demo for sure, then the 17th might be cutting it way to close (2 weeks before launch)

Generally, Square loves to drop the demo 4 weeks before launch so maybe even next week is in the cards. It is true that last year, we got the Direct the week after 3D World so maybe Arceus won't be an issue for a Feb 2nd/3rd Direct.

Look, I disagree very firmly with what Lozjam suggested and others have too, but we're in danger in turning it into a bit of a pile on if we keep going back to that topic.

The thread's parameters are also very clear: it's to speculate as to when the next Direct or Mini Direct will be in the first quarter of this year. Also going to bump this threadmark from Raccoon to encourage people to share their predictions for Direct content:
Alright, so my first attempts at creating hype events were misguided and terrible. Everything was too complex, too bureaucratic, and introduced too much work relative to the fun for everyone involved.

However, the success of #TeamDirect has got me hankering for another dumb activity for us to do, and I had an epiphany for how to make my terrible ideas palatable, and maybe even fun.

I present to you all this thread's second event, Build-A-Direct Workshop.

The concept for this was initiative was simple: taking the good parts of my old ideas, while throwing out all of the stupid and terrible busywork. My genius truly knows no bounds. So, how will it work? Unlike my previous attempts at manufacturing fun, this should be easy to explain.

All you have to do is write up a Direct. You can be as vague as an unordered list all the way up to estimating how long each trailers and transition will be. You'll be invited to change your Direct as often as you like, up until the Direct is announced at which point all submissions will be final.

After the Direct airs I'll go through all of the submissions and choose the ten that I think are closest to what we got. I'll run a strawpoll thereafter, and the voted winner will receive 20 USD (or local equivalent) of eShop credit.

And that's it! Look at this. No deadlines, no auctions, no fucking variable Wii Points. Just a simple forum game with democracy and money attached. Incredible.

I hope that you all participate. Please @ me in any submissions to the game, which will hopefully help me keep track of them. I'll have the first iteration of my own Direct up sometime today as an example, but keep in mind that submissions can take any form you want. Build-A-Direct Workshop is about creativity, fun, and humor, not rules and obligations.

OK, time for some Zelda Hype in here.

9th of February 2022 Direct

  • Opening: Breath of the Wild Sequel Title Reveal, full trailer.
  • Aonuma takes the stage and apologises for delaying the game... NOT rofl
  • Release date: 22th of April 2022.
  • Aonuma takes off his suit to reveal a full Tingle outfit. You finally get to control another character than Link! Of course it's not Zelda, because if she was a playable character then what would Link do?
  • Treehouse Stream Non-Stop Tutorial Area Marathon Until The Game Releases after the presentation.
  • All other games besides Kirby are 2023 because delays happen so it's reasonable to assume that stuff will be delayed.

WHO COULD SAY NO TO THAT EH?

Mii Music announcement. The sequel to the... what ever Wii Music was...
Holy crap...I never even considered the "casual stinker" being a Wii Music sequel. I still think 1-2 Switch is the more likely canidate but I remember Miyamoto did mention a Wii Music sequel being a possibility way back when...

The typical lifecycle of a wild guess on a message board is speculation, rumour, tease, fact and when it inevitably turns out to be wrong it was a lie all along.
Sure but rumors don't manifest out of nothing.

Wait yes they do.

What I mean is, when someone refers to a rumor usually there's some post or article that they're referring to.

I think I've been unclear: why would someone who believes this spend any time in this thread?

Oh boy! More cloud versions! ;)

The 3rd is financials reporting day right?

I'm not saying that I actually believe this. But I think it's unwise to discount the possibility. This is a direct speculation thread no? There is the possibility of there being a big general direct in January or February. Or, it could simply not happen as well.

I truly think, that discounting possibilities, however unprobable they are, leads people being completely off guard.
