I just finished Chapter 3 and it was definitely a fantastic experience!!
Hell yeah. I'm still impressed today by the extremely varied level design in Chapter 3, with big setpiece moments and memorable dungeons in both areas. How are you liking the combat, soundtrack, atmosphere, etc.?

Chapter 4 is a really fun diversion, and then chapter 5 is another one of my favorite chapters.
To the moon was something else, I’ll say that at the least. Magnificent game
I still have to beat it, it's in my backlog. I could probably knock it out in a long afternoon and evening, right?

With all due respect, shouldn't games be about more than just the gameplay itself? Every game that wins GOTY deserves it in one form or another, whether that's a fantastic story (TLOU2 and Disco Elysium), a beautiful world to explore (RDR2), or amazing gameplay (BOTW). Cinematic games are just as good as open games, story driven games can be just as good as games with terrible stories (but good gameplay), a game with terrible graphics can be just as good as a game with great graphics. That's what makes this medium so great. It can be an interactive movie, an interactive novel, or neither.

BOTW2 will be great, but so will all the other games. Sorry for the mini rant.
How do you get "gameplay is the only thing that matters in video games" from a comment saying "the gaming media don't put a lot of emphasis on gameplay innovation" ?

.

I'm fully vaccinated, but I just wanted to note..

We should be mindful that some that aren't vaccinated do have medical reasons for it - there exists all sorts, many just obstinate, but some legitimate. I would ask that we be mindful on statements like 'be scared'. I can imagine a case where somebody feels especially helpless and isolated with the knowledge of how terrifically Omicron is sweeping through the population.

Of course there are people with legitimate medical reasons that can't get the vaccine. I have sympathy for them. I was referring to those who can get it but choose not to. My post is meant to help ease the minds who did their part and got vaccinated. And I write this as an immunocompromised person.

But I am not gonna treat this situation with delicate hands and say anti-vaxxers shouldn't be scared. They absolutely should. We are all scared. That is why those who are vaccinated got it in the first place. The thing for people's mental health is for the pandemic to end and that won't happen until enough people build up an immunity whether that is through the vaccines or getting it themselves. By a large margin, is the anti-vaxxers who are ending up in hospitals, who are hooked up to machines, who are dying. And people unvaccinated means you have a substantially higher risk of falling severely ill and dying. That's the reality of it. You can help ease your concerns and those of others by getting vaccinated.

This last week or so has been one of the worst weeks for my feelings on Covid. Just feeling especially abandoned by government leadership and the culture of America (anti vaxers and protecting “the economy” above all else). Schools and hospitals have been hit the worst (I have friends and family who work in both) and I just feel terrible for them. Reading about the huge increases of kids in hospitals, suffering from Long Covid, and how the CDC held the report about increased chance for diabetes until Friday night to burry it. Hearing we are just supposed to live with a prediction of 80,000 new deaths this month and some official saying it’s ok if high risk Americans die (a group I’m likely in). All of this weighs me down…

I guess my own situation is better than a good deal of people out there even if it’s not great and certainly worse than before the pandemic started. My momentum in life which was starting to pick up again in a very positive way ground to a halt and I’ve been stuck at home a lot since. I have the vaccines and my booster shot, but I also have an auto immune disease and other health risks which makes me want to stay home as much as possible.

The positive things in life since Covid is getting to spend more time with family and friends virtually, playing more video games (not to mention joining here!), eating way healthier (I pretty much have mostly all home cooked meals every week which is awesome), exercising more, and getting more time for personal projects like writing. I don’t really know what the way forward is for me or us in general, but I guess stay as safe as possible Fami and cherish the family and friends you care about.

I already knew that the shiba inu in Odyssey was a direct model rip from nintendogs + cats, but what i've only learned today is that their official name (per the Mario Odyssey artbook) is... Nintendog.

nintendogs doesn't need to stay in "an era past" if you don't want it to Nintendo!

Considering this is the first instance you've said anything about 'anti-vaxxers', your first post does not read the same way. You blanket said that the unvaccinated should be scared, and that's what I was responding to

one of my selections for the COVID poll is “other” and that “other” includes:
  • yelling at eugenicists, proto-eugenicists, and people / organizations who make eugenicist statements, including but not limited to [checks notes] the CDC
  • living in sheer fucking terror
  • joining a forum counter my normal reservations and ingratiating myself into the community as some sort of shitpost ecclesiast and harbinger of queer chaos
  • playing video games between panic attacks (most played game is looking at all the icons on my Switch and not being able to decide what to play)
  • working from home through a crucible of sanity-thrashing, reason-bending excercises completely unmoored and alone
  • we got a fish

So I got my COVID test back today. Thought I was in the clear?

NOPE. I am still testing postive! Luckily I haven't had any symptoms for a week and a half, but it still sucks knowing it is in my system.

Gameplay shouldn’t be the only metric, but it should be one of the most important metrics (if not the most important metric as far as I’m concerned).

Yes, there’s a ton of variety in video games, but one look at the past (overall) winners and it’s pretty clear that massive, western-centric cinematic productions with heavy emphasis on narrative are disproportionally favored, and it’s not even close. It’s almost comical how easy it is to predict which games will get a nod or even win just by looking at how many of those boxes they tick. GotY has become Oscars 2.0, complete with our own version of Oscar bait.

Just took my first look at Elden Ring gameplay and realized we never got DS 2+3 on Switch! Wonder if that's another 2022 delight coming, I was waiting to get the trilogy.

I don't know. DS 1 came out in what, 2018? Sales probably weren't what they were hoping for. I feel like we would have heard something about 2 and 3 by now.

And The Forgotten City is the first game I've cleared this year. Good game! Genuinely pretty clever story that takes advantage of its unique premise (both setting and gameplay) well. Looking forward to seeing what this team does next: when you beat the game, you get a cute message thanking the player and asking them to keep track of the devs on their social channels, to spread the word and help support the team.

I agree with some of this. Currently it feels like expensive highly cinematic productions are a bit overvalued.

That said, I also feel there's a bit too much animosity towards narrative focused titles when it comes to Game of the Year. Some of these that are 'getting the nod' have exceptional, unique gameplay as well. God of War played incredibly well - the Leviathan implementation was dreamy. TLOU2 wasn't some phoned-in third person shooter with an 'Oscar-bait' story. It was very polished, varied, and did a reasonable job at not breaking your immersion despite how realistic the world was.

they clearly want it to

this delights me

I revel in Nintendogs' death

if I can't have wii sports 3 nintendogs people shouldn't get what they want either

On the one hand, I definitely agree, while also feeling like a lot of those massive games DO still deserve it. Kind of like how Oscar bait sometimes really is good and worthy. But I agree that Indies and smaller games and games in less-popular genres deserve more of a chance, too.

One big problem with this that's more unique to the games industry is that while there are a lot of games that come out every year (just like movies) games take FAR longer to complete, some of them upwards of hundreds of hours. No one can play everything, or even a fraction of everything. Games journalists in particular will play a lot of games, yes, but generally most of them will play most of the really "big" games in a year and then a lot of other games that are more the kind they are personally into. So when GOTY season comes around and journalists and industry people discuss it and compare notes and all that, the really big AAA games are the ones that are naturally going to get the most attention because those are the games that most everyone played that year. You can't vote for or vouch for something you didn't play, so... what else can you do? As a result, it takes a really special Indie game that spreads like wildfire (something like Hades or Celeste) to really get attention, or likewise genres like JRPG/racing/fighting etc. have to be practically universally praised to get much buzz (something like Forza Horizon 5 just recently, or Persona 5 or Nier Automata in 2017).

Alright, beat Torna: The Golden Country after delaying it for far too long. Phenomenal game and great start to the year. Not sure how I'd rank it in comparison to the main game - its gameplay foundations are stronger (love the changes to the already great combat from 2) and it does a lot with its short runtime, but there's something to be said for the grand adventure that 2 takes you on, which is a feeling that's kinda missing in Torna. Torna does join the main game though as one of the few video game stories I really enjoyed. I'm not usually a huge story guy when it comes to game but something about XC2 and Torna just works for me. Weirdly enough, this does not apply to XC1, where I found the story, like, fine I guess.

Is it because of Counterattack? It might be. Let's just back every story cutscene in every video game with Counterattack and see how that goes (ok Desolation also does some heavy lifting in some cutscenes here)

Listening to GameBeat Decides and they were discussing a listener question: "The follow ups to multiple Game of the Year winners are coming out this year - Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok, and Zelda. In your opinion, which is most likely to win the award at The Game Awards?" Grubb and Minotti both felt like they dismissed Zelda as unlikely, despite being super fans of the original.

Jeff needs to be called out...but does he even know about this forum? I'd like to believe he'd get along with this crew more than Era, but who knows. I can see there's a @jeffgrubb but no idea if it's one in the same
I honestly feel like God of War Ragnarok will get a good amount of awards but assuming none of these three get delayed, won't be quite in the same league in terms of awards. If one is to win TGA it will be either BOTW2 or Elden Ring, and the same is true for the total amount of GOTY awards, me thinks.

Because at the end of the day, the type of prestige media outlets go for isn't just narrative. It's also how much "innovation", "ambition", or "scope" there is to said projects. And with open world games being all the rage, two highly anticipated open world titles from arguably the most respected developers of the last few years ... well that's going to be hard to beat.

Elden Ring vs BOTW2 is another story.

I hate the fact that there's so many games coming out this year that I want. It's hard to spend money on video games and card games simultaneously XD

Guess who's back at the office (and with that at a PC) and is going to be more present than in the last two weeks?

Anyway, anything interesting i might've missed over the holiday vacation?

So, um, I ended up buying DUSK, QUAKE, Chicory and Red Faction Remarstered (it was 2€, don't judge me) in the new year's sale. I think I might've gone overboard, considering I'm still playing Halo Infinite and Pokémon is coming out in less than 3 weeks.

Just an Arceus overview trailer that for some reason hasn't been released in English yet

I was somehow completely unaware that everyone moved here until just now.

So, hello everyone! I haven't been active in this community in a while but I'm craving a direct so I'm back to feed my addiction

I hate that poll.

Not as much as I hate this goddamn pandemic though. It has gone from a funny meme to actual goddamn tragedy so many times in the last two years.

And during december they finally closed all gyms and other sportcenters and activities and that pushed me over the edge of just completely losing it. I am absolutely fed up with this goddamn thing. And it won't get better. And there will be worse pandemics in the future because we are incapable of understanding restrictions of the planet and there is so much actual greed and evil that simply cares for wealth.

It's a goddamn miserable world as of now and I want it to change.

They're always really late with the English overview trailers. Like, weeks late. No idea why. Note the dates here for the Japanese (Oct 31) and English (Nov 15) versions of the SwSh overview. Or maybe the Japanese versions are just... really early?

Oh, that's good to know, I honestly never paid that much attention to it. Thanks for pointing it out!

For me, COVID has been... honestly, more than great, and I know I'm so fortunate for it. I know it has made so, so much damage to a lot of people (and continues to do so!), and obviously I'd prefer COVID wouldn't ever existed, without a doubt. And even though I fully believe that, there's a part of me that egoistically is grateful. The lockdown was an almost literal godsend for me - coming from a really, reallly dark place, those months where all things suddenly stopped gave me an space I wouldn't be able to have without the pandemic. In the last two years, my mental transformation has been astonishing and I've been lucky enough to make a lot of huge changes in my life that has impacted almost everything in my life. So, yeah, COVID sucks, I'd still prefer it never existed and that all the pain to millions of people would dissappear, but I can not deny it has given me an amazing second oportunity.

It'll be the middle path: fun but too short/easy.

It's a Kirby game, of course it'll be that, except for the explicitly Ball busting very endgame content boss rush that could make a dark souls fan wince in fear.

I wonder if they're planning on a extended round of dlc updates for this one like they did star allies. If so, if rather wait a year and get the full package in one playthrough.

I like the combat and soundtrack. The atmosphere is also good for what the N64 can pull off. I’m confused about the world structure and fast travel. I see spots that could be used for pipes for fast travel but it hasn’t been unlocked yet (am I missing something?).

My major gripe with the game is the level gating. I’m not a fan of when RPGs do it. I understand they do it to maintain the balance and tension, but if I want to commit to the grind and be OP, let me.

It kind of cracks me up how people complain that modern Paper Mario games missed out on “rpg elements” like leveling and experience points gained after battle when this game will halt your progression anyway after reaching a certain level. The people complaining about that surely must realize it was an illusion anyway that meant nothing.

It's really more about the various builds you can have. Especially TTYD, for all its faults, gave you so many different badges to customize Mario and his partners that the never ones simply don't have.

Reducing XP to keep combat difficulty a relevant challenge and discourage grinding is good design. It’s the game telling you there is nothing left here for you and you have all you need to overcome the next challenge. I get some people find its cathartic, but grinding sucks and should always be discouraged and some people really do need that encouragement to move on. I don’t remember if that game featured it, I think it did, but having your overworld attacks just obliterate enemies to skip fights entirely when you are overleveled still gives you a similar fun feeling of accomplishment and is useful too in keeping you moving forward.

My anti-vax sister, her boyfiend, and all 3 of my nephews have COVID. My 2 closest friends have it too. And I wonder why I'm so anxious and depressed.

But in non-COVID stuff, Arceus is coming soon :)

If the COVID topic is too stressful and depressing for everyone I can change it to a new one. I'm not sure I thought through how depressing it might get.

I say keep it. It's an unavoidable reality for everyone, I'm glad we can read other people's perspectives.

I haven't had huge issues with COVID surprisingly. I have been focussed on sport more. I managed to finish more backlog in games. And life has been chill overall. So yeah, it hasn't bother me as I thought it would.

Have to call Nintendo since the AC adapter they sold me is bunk. at least in some capacity. Plugging it into a dock causes bizarre video issues and random shutdowns, so I've stopped using it since I think it's going to blow up my Switch or something. Initially thought it was the dock I bought alongside it, but after some testing it's actually the power supply. Really don't want to do this over a $20 item, especially considering shipping, but it's that or buy another one for $30. : v

My siblings had covid but thankfully they were vaccinated so it wasn't a big struggle for them. I live in Portugal, my sister is in the US and the rest of my family in Brazil (albeit in different cities), so it's hard, you get worried about their well-being (and vice-versa) while they are so far away. I'm relieved for not having any anti-vaxx relatives...
