StarTopic Nintendo Direct Speculation |ST8| Press Your (Nintendo Direct) Luck!

I didn’t want to kill the vibes so I didn’t say anything but I was definitely guessing that whatever Pyoro was teasing had more to do with the big ol’ “Nintendo World Championships” logo and less with the “sw”s and the random number codes people were trying to play 4d chess with.

I’m expecting this to be an NSO exclusive in line with the 99 games, but keeping my fingers crossed for a full-on retail release because A.) I like NES Remix and B.) absolute funniest outcome to months of “what comes after Luigi’s Mansion 2” is “NES collection, again”

Ah see this is my problem with leaks, they set expectations too high sometimes.. like if we had no idea about this it would be a cool surprise, but with people thinking this was a Switch 2 tease, it seems disappointing in comparison

Having said that, I do enjoy the chaos of trying to decode a cryptic Pyoro tweet, I just think it does more harm than good - especially to a fan base that's so desperate for news right now!

Sorry if this sounds like a gotcha type of post, but don't really blame Pyro for people going wild. I and others took the teaser picture as face value due to it being the first hi-res image of the cartridge on Google, if he really wanted you to look at the switches he would have added a comment alongside the image, what he usually does when there's more meaning of the picture.

he liked a tweet highlighting the SWs.

My guess for a July game was a one-off announcement for an EPD x indieszero joint so hopefully this is that (and also it's good).

Dumb idea, but what if we’re getting a general mini? NWC honestly seems like a shadowdrop, so why would putting that out in your most packed month of the year calm worries about H2? Something is up, and we’ll probably find out in 90-150 minutes

I hope it's announced today because this sounds fun and I don't want it to linger all week end!

Wouldn't mind a shadow drop either. Sounds like it's ready to go.

Can't do it based on modern games, please enjoy reheated NES again
In case of emergency (ie. Ack! Our hardware is late… again) release nostalgia!

I’m sure I’ll check this out but I’m seriously getting some NES/SNES mini (what can we slap together and get to market in 6 months for the holiday) vibes right now.

If it's a new NES Remix.... Big hype ! :D
I’d be shocked if this isn’t indieszero’s latest project now that the GameCenter CX re-release is out.

Honestly, when the tease came out yesterday, I was expecting it to be either an NSO drop or the announcement of the championship's return later this year or early next year (with games like Mario Wonder, for example) so this (supposedly) being a game like NES Remix is honestly a huge surprise to me!!!

This is honestly the type of stuff I hope we do get in the second half of the year: smaller surprises that are kind of out of nowhere! I'm not sure how much more they have left for the Switch but I hope it can go out with some smaller projects that Nintendo otherwise wouldn't give too much of a focus to! :)

direct next week and this is a shadowdrop. mark your calendars guys. pyoro usually leaks about a week in advance, he probably couldntve accounted for an esrb leak unless he has more sources than we realized so im leaning towards that being a funny coincidence than where pyoro thought we'd be learning about it. shadowdrop in direct next week. trust the process.

How does the information on the ESRB website work? Like, does Nintendo say when they'd like it published or does the ESRB publish it immediately after they are able to rate the game? A mixture of both?

Nintendo World Championship: NES Edition opens up the possibility of Nintendo World Championship: [insert name of Nintendo device] Edition.

I know they never followed up on NES Remix with SNES or GameBoy Remix, but hopefully this prospective title is good and fares well. It'd be especially interesting to see them revive the Game & Watch in some creative capacity.

I think you're overthinking this.

This just feels like nothing but "Ho man, we need some shit to release this year because any of our anticipated projects are on the other system in 2025".

Yeah that’s actually better than what I expected. But also lmao

Look, fami I love you and I love going 🤪 about Switch 2 leaks and rumours as much as any of you, but even I was thinking y’all were going a little wild picking apart that image yesterday. I didn’t wanna ruin the fun or anything by telling you all in the moment but I was definitely thinking folks maybe needed to relax haha

I'm not saying it's intended as a series right from the off; I'm saying it could become a series if it's a good product that does well.

Edit - also I wouldn't be so dismissive of smaller titles. Fun and interesting things emerge this way, like NES Remix itself or the 99 games.

Sounds like an evolution of the NES Remix idea but possibly with some sort of competitive online component hench being called World Championships which would be pretty cool

I do wish it wasn't always NES stuff for these kinds of things but hey, I can always hope the NES Edition is them leaving the door open for an SNES edition in the future....

This is a fun (and funny) outcome personally as at first I thought it could just be an old game brought back, but reading the description it sounds like a new thing?

Definitely a good few exciting possibilities here for what’s going on:

A - first leak for a Direct next week and potential shadowdrop
B - An upcoming standalone shadowdrop
C - Something coming out relatively soon, could be early June or mid July to fill in a gap.

I’m most hoping this is part of a Direct for early next week ahead of the investor thing, but either way intrigued to see where this fits especially if it is a new game. With Endless Ocean released yesterday, we currently have no new games in the near future so something like this is potentially exciting.

Edit: Oh well Pyoro just came out and said it’s new while I wrote this lol. Awesome!

I agree with this and also, holy shit how things must be fucked at Nintendo if this barrel scrapping is what they'll fill the year with.

Like... what were they planning on switch 1 if things were going accordind to the supposed plan ? Just put out the Switch 2 in march 2024 and immediatly drop support of Switch 1 ? I really have a hard time being optimistic about all of this.

I kinda doubt this will sell paticularly well. It rides high on nostalgia, but i doubt that this will lure in folks.

It feels like a "fast and cheap" made thing.

We haven't even got a Summer Direct yet, what is with people with this doom and gloom mindset.

To be honest, if this isn’t an indieszero project I’m going to be skeptical of the quality. $30 sounds perfect but if they farmed it out to an outfit like TOSE for some reason I’m staying clear.

How many more years do you expect Switch 2 to be delayed 🙃

So I'm getting ahead of myself and saying it might be good and could become a little series if it does well, but it's fair game to say it's not going to perform well, won't be particularly good, and is just fast and cheap?

Like sure, right now, we know nothing about it other than it very clearly is a budget release. But that doesn't prevent it from potentially being interesting, enjoyable or worthwhile (just as there's nothing preventing it from being a sad, wet fart, though if it is EPD and indieszero then they've done some good work together, including the budget, low resource NES Remix titles).

It's not like a low resource game needs to do gangbusters to justify more effort in future. And really, I think one thing we've lacked a little on Switch is more oddball efforts at lower price points.

The picture that continues to be painted of this unannounced game is getting increasingly more exciting. Sounds more on the lines of something substantial like NES Remix if it’s $30.

I know this isn't serious but there were and will always be points when Nintendo do cheap oddball shit and the end of the generation is one time for that. Some of that stuff is fun, inventive and worthwhile. Maybe this is, maybe it isn't.

If this is anything like NES Remix, it better be successful enough to be turned into a small series. We never got SNES Remix, but maybe with a little detour...

People still clutching their pearls over this being a lighter year for Nintendo—despite us knowing this for months now—is wild.

The first new 1st party thing we hear in months is some rom hacks compilation. Most likely of THE SAME FIRST PARTY NES games again ? For a Championiship that only occured in America in the 90's? Yeah, I can't be excited about that.

Well, i think there is a difference between speculating how this might turn into a new series and just thinking it's a low effort release to have something to release.

Could be good yeah, and of course what now follows is a personal opinion, but i've played enough of the same NES games in my life, and i played NES Remix and had my share. So if even i, who due to age actually does have nostalgia for the NES, am already turned out enough that i don't wanna see or read more of it, i does make me think this won't do well.
Sure, it doesn't have to do well on the same level as a big release, but if ... dunno ... ports of WW and TP HD might end up doing more for goodwill and in terms of revenue, it might not matter if the game did well enough on paper.

And for oddball efforts ... there's more series they can go back to instead of another NES cash-in.

So it should be one of the few Nintendo titles priced at 30$/€
I'm guessing it's a digital only game tho
Everybody 1-2 Switch was also $30 and that got a full retail release; if there’s enough reimagining going on here I could see this NWC game being the same, if only to give Nintendo something else to put on store shelves this year.

Firstly Nintendo hasn't officially announced this it was leaked via ESRB and tease by Pyoro. Sure it might get announced today or few days time but with this being rated suggest it probably a shadow drop or a release shortly after before their big games this holiday.
