This hurts so much. I can at least understand the first licensed song being in because they’re still in Brooklyn at the time, but the fact that all the other scenes were in fact originally supposed to have original scores but were replaced with licensed music…ugh, this sucks. I want that version of the movie! After more soundtrack investigation by @MondoMega, it seems like No Sleep till Brooklyn was the only licensed song that was considered when scoring the rest of the movie as there is no original score for that part of the movie. But for Battle Without Honor Or Humanity, Holding Out for a Hero, Take on Me, Thunderstruck, and Mr. Blue Sky, they actually replaced an existing score for their scenes (rendering those original scores unused but you can still listen to them in the official soundtrack), implying they were added after the movie was already scored.
Damn, this is disappointing to me. I really liked that Famiboards seemed to take a different direction with its off-topic board than ResetEra, allowing threads for stuff that isn’t strictly about video games but still very much related to video games on its gaming board. Made it a much nicer experience for people who only really want to be here for the Nintendo discussion for the most part.Hey folks, just a quick announcement: We've moved the Mario Movie review thread to The Roost, and unlinked the main ST from The Treehouse. From now on, all discussion about the Mario Movie will take place here in The Roost. That goes for any future Nintendo movies and TV shows as well. Thanks!
We have had Mario Movie threads in both The Treehouse and in The Roost, and over the past few days we have seen multiple people express confusion about which thread is where and where to post stuff. To that end we have decided to consolidate everything relating to the Mario Movie, as well as future Nintendo movies and TV shows, in The Roost.Damn, this is disappointing to me. So, like, is this gonna be a consistent thing, or is it still gonna be weirdly selective for no particular reason? Like, we have threads about Nintendo merchandise, threads about the Pokémon anime and other media based on games, threads about gaming-related companies, content creators, etc., and other gaming-related subjects in Treehouse that aren’t strictly about the actual video games themselves, so are all of those being moved to The Roost too? Not to mention the fact that the “General Nintendo Discussion” thread often becomes random off-topic discussion (despite the fact that there’s already a thread dedicated to that in The Roost). It doesn’t feel like there’s a clear and logical rule here for what should be in Treehouse versus what should be in The Roost and why.
I really hope they do an extended cut of the movie for the home video release. I want to see what those other scenes were that they animated that didn't get in.
Did they do like full animation for those scenes? Because usually cut scenes from animated movies aren't finished up to the quality of the other scenes.
I get that, but my question is why move them all to The Roost instead of Treehouse, especially when most of those threads were already in Treehouse to begin with? And what does this mean for other threads about gaming-related subjects in Treehouse that aren’t strictly about the actual video games themselves, like the threads about Nintendo merchandise, the Pokémon anime and other media based on games (beyond any future Nintendo movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie), and gaming-related companies, content creators, etc.? Will those still be allowed to stay in Treehouse as they have been, and if so, why are Nintendo movies being treated differently when they’re essentially the same thing as far as their connection to gaming goes?We have had Mario Movie threads in both The Treehouse and in The Roost, and over the past few days we have seen multiple people express confusion about which thread is where and where to post stuff. The General Discussion thread is kind of a special case and isn't really relevant to this decision.
I think it might have something to do with their Dreamfactory Doki Doki Panic origins, but even that has been subsequently co-opted into Mario canon. When it comes to Daisy and Sarasaland, it really makes me wish Nintendo introduced new villains or fleshed out their villains more.
Like in terms of recognizable Mario villains, they really only have Junior and the Koopalings left to pull from (and could they even carry a movie?). Wario and Waluigi too but they’re more like rivals
Meanwhile Wart and Tatanga have their own realms that they conquer and unique armies… but no one besides fans knows who the fuck they are lol
I do want to find out how they would add Wario to this movie series. What could lead an elf-like man to decide to dress like Mario and stalk him??
I'm more of a scientific person, but I can't shake this gut feeling that Mr. Iwata watches over Nintendo, some how. Almost every major endeavor they've attempted since he's passed away has gone past expectation and in some cases way past expectation.
NES Classic announced as a small little hold over product because Nintendo has nothing much for holiday 2016 ... suddenly becomes sold out everywhere and micro-consoles become a little fad for a bit.
Pokemon Go ... ok neato a Pokemon AR mobile game ... that suddenly takes off to the point that it's all over the news, shutting down city blocks, being referenced in US presidental elections ... I mean ... what?
Nintendo launches Switch after the disaster of the Wii U and the 3DS fizzling, but hey maybe it'll do half decent. It ends up outselling the Playstation 4, might have a shot at beating the DS and PS2 for the best selling console of all time. And oh yeah, it didn't require any kind of real brand alteration from Nintendo either (ie: bending over backwards for the Wii Fit/Sports/Brain Training crowd being the main focus of the system) ... you have 30+ year old IP like Legend of Zelda crushing their sales highs by more than double, 3D Mario hitting sales highs, etc. etc.
Global COVID shutdowns, probably the most significant event since World War II happens and right as those are starting, Nintendo basically has the perfect game ready by happenstance right at that exact moment ... Animal Crossing for Switch. Sales skyrocket beyond any previous Animal Crossing game, Switch sales go through the roof.
Mario ... movie. Well OK, it should do better than that crappy 1993 movie and hopefully win some respect back for Nintendo. Sure it has some good sales potential. But it's looking like something far bigger than that, looks like it's a critic proof box office monster and movies could be a central part of Nintendo's business going forward.
Like at some point you just sorta have to shrug, lol.
To add onto this, most of these things were things Iwata himself was likely supervising.I'm more of a scientific person, but I can't shake this gut feeling that Mr. Iwata watches over Nintendo, some how. I'm confused by all the "Well, obviously a Smash movie is happening." comments. Is it? It seems far more likely they'll keep on trucking with Mario and its spin-offs first before we even get to any other IP. Only the MCU managed to make that work. I feel like chasing that isn't a smart idea when it only worked once before and that took years.
Plus, unlike Marvel, Nintendo properties aren't all the same universe or tone or setting. Forcing them to all fit together sounds like a nightmare that will ruin what made Mario special: making it feel like the videogame was brought to the big screen.
Deadline article updated, now expecting $195 5-day opening domestically.
‘Super Mario Bros’ Hits High Scores: Record Opening For Animated Pic At $377M+ WW, 5-Day U.S. Record $204M+; ‘Air’ Soars To $20M – Sunday Box Office Update
The Super Mario Bros Movie is expecting a Friday of $59 million that puts it on course for a $146M three-day and $204M five-day opening. Worldwide at $377M it's a record for animated movie.deadline.com
It is also a bit sad because this movie will likely be the last real project that was initiated under him. Of course his legacy will continue to live on and Nintendo is more than him, but in the film it hit me the most emotionally to see his name. Like yeah maybe I‘m a little fanboy or the rest of the movie just didn‘t had much to offer emotionally, but it is really a nice tribute to him and shows that Nintendo knows where their success is coming from.To add onto this, most of these things were things Iwata himself was likely supervising.
Approved the direction of the Switch, the reinvention of Zelda with BotW, started discussions on the Mario movie.
It’s honestly heartbreaking he saw none of it pay off, because it ALL has spectacularly
Honestly, a Smash Bros movie isn't very feasible - especially in a decent time frame, assuming they would follow the cinematic universe model.
Animated films take years to create. It's not like with Marvel where they can shoot multiple films that release in the space of 18 months. I can't imagine Illumination would be particularly enthused to have to juggle Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing etc.
Coversely it's hard to see multiple animation studios contributing to a shared universe. I know Dreamworks and Illumination are under the same umbrella, but I think it's a bit of a stretch.

The discussion isn’t just about how this movie will affect Nintendo anymore. This is someone finding gold in the river, and the rush is coming. The ripples are going through every studio right now, those who already have a game license are grabbing more, and those who don’t have one are going to be scrambling for them. This is Iron Man in 2008.

With the profits of the Mario Movie, illumination could probably build an entire new studio just for Nintendo movies. It probably would be entirely irresponsible in today's current market to not.Honestly, a Smash Bros movie isn't very feasible - especially in a decent time frame, assuming they would follow the cinematic universe model.

Edit: Plus it'd be a limit on creativity. Marvel Studios are it's own beast focused solely on the MCU - Dreamworks/Illumination are decidedly not, nor should they be.
Mario vs Avatar would have been nuts.Good thing that it was delayed from Dec. 2022 launch, it would launch just a week after Avatar lol.
I'm not sure, I feel like this is a trap to think it as an Iron Man. We're not starting at a relatively unknown character, we're talking about Mario, one of the most recognizable video game characters out there. It's more a Batman 1989 or Superman 1974 than an Iron Man that its a proof of concept that you can put X on the big screen. I don't think any video game movie is going to top Mario for a while.Gonna quote myself from Install Base
Not to mention that they delayed Puss in Boots seemingly because Mario was delayed, so from September launch to December, taking the Mario spot.Mario vs Avatar would have been nuts.
I believe they already confirmed a live action version of Dream Works' How To Train Your Dragon to be in production. It would make sense to me if they did that to let DreamWorks do an animated Zelda, and not have two separate midevil fantasy animated series running at the same time at the same studio...Melenadri was also executive producer on Puss in Boots 2 and there were reports about Shrek reboot as well. When you consider that Universal Pictures is basically distributing DreamWorks movies I think the collaboration with DreamWorks and Nintendo would be cool, especially for Zelda movie. This Universal stuff is not directly tied to Meledandri but I feel DreamWorks collaboration will still happen either way.
