Film The Super Mario Bros. Movie |ST| But first, we need to talk about Cinematic Universes (Open Spoilers)

After more soundtrack investigation by @MondoMega, it seems like No Sleep till Brooklyn was the only licensed song that was considered when scoring the rest of the movie as there is no original score for that part of the movie. But for Battle Without Honor Or Humanity, Holding Out for a Hero, Take on Me, Thunderstruck, and Mr. Blue Sky, they actually replaced an existing score for their scenes (rendering those original scores unused but you can still listen to them in the official soundtrack), implying they were added after the movie was already scored.
This hurts so much. I can at least understand the first licensed song being in because they’re still in Brooklyn at the time, but the fact that all the other scenes were in fact originally supposed to have original scores but were replaced with licensed music…ugh, this sucks. I want that version of the movie!

Hey folks, just a quick announcement: We've moved the Mario Movie review thread to The Roost, and unlinked the main ST from The Treehouse. From now on, all discussion about the Mario Movie will take place here in The Roost. That goes for any future Nintendo movies and TV shows as well. Thanks!
Damn, this is disappointing to me. I really liked that Famiboards seemed to take a different direction with its off-topic board than ResetEra, allowing threads for stuff that isn’t strictly about video games but still very much related to video games on its gaming board. Made it a much nicer experience for people who only really want to be here for the Nintendo discussion for the most part.

So, like, is this gonna be a consistent thing, or is it still gonna be weirdly selective for no particular reason? Like, we have threads about Nintendo merchandise, threads about the Pokémon anime and other media based on games, threads about gaming-related companies, content creators, etc., and other gaming-related subjects in Treehouse that aren’t strictly about the actual video games themselves, so are all of those being moved to The Roost too? Not to mention the fact that the “General Nintendo Discussion” thread often becomes random off-topic discussion (despite the fact that there’s already a thread dedicated to that in The Roost). It doesn’t feel like there’s a clear and logical rule here for what should be in Treehouse versus what should be in The Roost and why.

Think that huge opening weekend pretty much locks in not only a Mario sequel to begin production asap, but probably a Donkey Kong spin-off too. Miyamoto is going to be busy.

Gotta get the scripts going.

I think Sing! and Secret Life of Pets franchises, which had huge drop offs for their sequels will be getting put on the backburner by Illumination to accommodate the future Mario/DK movies.

Pretty amazing for Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (especially for Michael's theatrical directorial debut) as this movie is a box office monster. I am quite happy for them.

They are totally going to build towards a Smash Bros. mega event movie probably several years down the line. The current Mario movie even sort of plants the seeds with some non-Mario/DK IP references.

Super Mario Bros. 2 or Donkey Kong Country are probably next up.

The interesting thing about Illumination is their animation is farmed out to external studios, so I wonder if Universal and Nintendo will just sit down and create a division specifically for Nintendo movies, because with the type of hit the Mario movie is, you can't just have like ... Sing 3 holding up production on a Mario sequel for 2 years.

They probably have to setup a dedicated Nintendo story team at the main Illumination story which I presume Miyamoto and Meledandri oversee, and then even 1, maybe even 2 external animation studios that then do the animation.

For Universal though this is great. Every studio is dying for the next big "cinematic universe" and they basically have hit the jackpot. That's the type of situation you're glad to spend the $$$ to open an extra studio/staff if need be. It's great too that this is not all locked under Disney ... Universal really badly needed this and they have the theme parks already to be able to leverage these IP beyond just the movies.

Also the price for any Legend of Zelda movie (which could also be its own monster movie IP ... live action perhaps even) just went way up.

We have had Mario Movie threads in both The Treehouse and in The Roost, and over the past few days we have seen multiple people express confusion about which thread is where and where to post stuff. To that end we have decided to consolidate everything relating to the Mario Movie, as well as future Nintendo movies and TV shows, in The Roost.

The General Discussion thread is kind of a special case and isn't really relevant to this decision.

I really hope they do an extended cut of the movie for the home video release. I want to see what those other scenes were that they animated that didn't get in.

Did they do like full animation for those scenes? Because usually cut scenes from animated movies aren't finished up to the quality of the other scenes.

I had today off work for Good Friday, so I’m catching a matinee. Looks like I’ll have three viewings by tomorrow night since I’m seeing it with family tomorrow.

Looking back at the movie, in terms of "Nintendo-isms" the only thing I'm mainly dissapointed in from that end was Donkey Kong Sr. (Cranky Kong?). Like they should've just made him Cranky Kong from the games. I like Fred Armisen but I wasn't that big on that take on the character.

I guess maybe they could make a DK Sr. Sr. (Donkey Kong's grandpa) who is Cranky Kong for a DK movie.

Not sure but we know of at least 1 scene in the trailers that was fully animated that got cut. (It was Peach trying to pull the Cheep Cheep off Mario's face)

Is it weird for me to want:

  • More Wrecking Crew and other Mario-adjacent characters to be featured and fleshed out? I could already see Foreman Spike as the perfect segue to introduce Wario and Waluigi (and as someone mentioned here, as his replacements for Mario and Luigi), but I can also see some WaiorWare or even Mario Golf cast being thrown in as extras. I honestly like the whole buisness rivalry thing which oddly enough feels more fleshed out (or at least gets the point across more effectively) than the Scapelli's from the 1993 movie!
  • More of Mario's family. I honestly thought it was nice to see fresh original faces (or at least their designs if the Mario Golf origin is to go by) made for the movie. What's impressive is that their designs don't feel out of place at all.
  • Peach's origins being an orphan means the possibility of Rosalina being her daughter? I feel a lot can be built from Peach's origins alone, but i wouldn't mind something more original, too.
  • More unusual stuff happening in Brooklyn. I can see Donkey Kong forming a sort of extended rivalry...or perhaps even a plot which involves him being-mind controlled to kidnap the Mayor (Pauline) and recreate the "Jump Man" arcade game back in Mario's pizzeria, which then gets subsequently retitled to "Donkey Kong". But I guess I like seeing the plumbers aspect of the brothers being played out more. Also we can't forget how Bowser's Castle is now pretty much in the middle of New York.
  • Introduce Daisy as a regular human who, much like the brothers, accidentally discovers the Warp Pipes and gets thrust in a role where she ends up eventually governing Sarasaland, maybe was a way to help fend of Bowser or some other threat since Peach could only do so much protecting the Mushroom Kingdom. Like, I could see her as originally some part-time employee at Mona Pizza's but gets curious as to where the Mario Bros. live after seemingly disappearing into the Brooklyn sewers (insert jokes about turtles and sewers/potential references to TMNT). Because Daisy is more street-smart, she adopts easily to the new region she finds herself in.

I get that, but my question is why move them all to The Roost instead of Treehouse, especially when most of those threads were already in Treehouse to begin with? And what does this mean for other threads about gaming-related subjects in Treehouse that aren’t strictly about the actual video games themselves, like the threads about Nintendo merchandise, the Pokémon anime and other media based on games (beyond any future Nintendo movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie), and gaming-related companies, content creators, etc.? Will those still be allowed to stay in Treehouse as they have been, and if so, why are Nintendo movies being treated differently when they’re essentially the same thing as far as their connection to gaming goes?

If there is confusion about where to post stuff, shouldn’t the clearest, simplest way to solve that be to say “if it’s related to video games in some way, it goes in Treehouse; if it’s not related to video games at all, it goes in The Roost”? That’s about as clear-cut as it can be, and that way there should never be any confusion as to where a thread about a particular subject should go or what threads can be found on which boards. Plus, if that were the case, then people who visit this site mainly just for Nintendo discussion—which is the main appeal of this forum, after all—could see all of that without ever having to go to the off-topic board.

When it comes to Daisy and Sarasaland, it really makes me wish Nintendo introduced new villains or fleshed out their villains more.

Like in terms of recognizable Mario villains, they really only have Junior and the Koopalings left to pull from (and could they even carry a movie?). Wario and Waluigi too but they’re more like rivals

Meanwhile Wart and Tatanga have their own realms that they conquer and unique armies… but no one besides fans knows who the fuck they are lol

I think it might have something to do with their Dreamfactory Doki Doki Panic origins, but even that has been subsequently co-opted into Mario canon.

But I agree: Wart could make a new villain while Bowser is imprisoned.

I can see Wario and Waluigi becoming "those two guys" in the background, probably less about being Mario's rivals and more of a duo who always scheme to get rich.

The sequel will probably introduce Wario at least, but I think Jack Black's Bowser must have a bigger role next time out. He definitely was the best character in the first one.

I do want to find out how they would add Wario to this movie series. What could lead an elf-like man to decide to dress like Mario and stalk him??

Two words that are going to explain everything + the inevitable (IMO) Smash Brothers movie:

Parallel Universes (you might even call them ... ahem ... galaxies)

It's already even set up in the current Mario movie.

I'm more of a scientific person, but I can't shake this gut feeling that Mr. Iwata watches over Nintendo, some how. Almost every major endeavor they've attempted since he's passed away has gone past expectation and in some cases way past expectation.

NES Classic announced as a small little hold over product because Nintendo has nothing much for holiday 2016 ... suddenly becomes sold out everywhere and micro-consoles become a little fad for a bit.

Pokemon Go ... ok neato a Pokemon AR mobile game ... that suddenly takes off to the point that it's all over the news, shutting down city blocks, being referenced in US presidental elections ... I mean ... what?

Nintendo launches Switch after the disaster of the Wii U and the 3DS fizzling, but hey maybe it'll do half decent. It ends up outselling the Playstation 4, might have a shot at beating the DS and PS2 for the best selling console of all time. And oh yeah, it didn't require any kind of real brand alteration from Nintendo either (ie: bending over backwards for the Wii Fit/Sports/Brain Training crowd being the main focus of the system) ... you have 30+ year old IP like Legend of Zelda crushing their sales highs by more than double, 3D Mario hitting sales highs, etc. etc.

Global COVID shutdowns, probably the most significant event since World War II happens and right as those are starting, Nintendo basically has the perfect game ready by happenstance right at that exact moment ... Animal Crossing for Switch. Sales skyrocket beyond any previous Animal Crossing game, Switch sales go through the roof.

Mario ... movie. Well OK, it should do better than that crappy 1993 movie and hopefully win some respect back for Nintendo. Sure it has some good sales potential. But it's looking like something far bigger than that, looks like it's a critic proof box office monster and movies could be a central part of Nintendo's business going forward.

Like at some point you just sorta have to shrug, lol.

To add onto this, most of these things were things Iwata himself was likely supervising.

Approved the direction of the Switch, the reinvention of Zelda with BotW, started discussions on the Mario movie.

It’s honestly heartbreaking he saw none of it pay off, because it ALL has spectacularly

I honestly can't wait until later this year to watch this thing on Netflix, you guys make it sound awesome. I'll have to buy a damn Blu-ray™™™ player of all things somewhere just to watch it as soon as it releases physically.

I'm confused by all the "Well, obviously a Smash movie is happening." comments. Is it? It seems far more likely they'll keep on trucking with Mario and its spin-offs first before we even get to any other IP. Only the MCU managed to make that work. I feel like chasing that isn't a smart idea when it only worked once before and that took years.

Plus, unlike Marvel, Nintendo properties aren't all the same universe or tone or setting. Forcing them to all fit together sounds like a nightmare that will ruin what made Mario special: making it feel like the videogame was brought to the big screen.

Yeah like I just said on the purple forum to someone else who said the same thing as you, I'm fine with Illumination crafting their own little "Mario Cinematic Universe" utilizing Mario adjacent stuff like DK, Luigi's Mansion, Wario, etc. but if Nintendo plans on doing movies/TV shows for their other non-Nintendo IP then I really hope to god they 1. get other studios like DreamWorks to make them and 2. keep them in entirely self contained universes, just as their game IPs are barring Smash/cameos.

I still just can't imagine a, say, Illuminations Metroid movie, let alone it apparently taking place in the same world as their Mario stuff.

Miyamoto and Nintendo Team sending back to Illumination another change of 5 frames in the movie for 20th time in a week.

I think a Smash movie will happen, but it could be like a decade off. I think you will see it start to be seeded especially strong in the Mario sequel and Donkey Kong movie ie: you'll see
Little Mac appear briefly in the Mario sequel, as Punch-Out! is already setup as existing in-universe with Mario
.

But I'll say this ... the post credits scene for a Mario or DK movie where the Smash Bros. music kicks in is going to blow the roof off theaters. A lot of Nintendo fans are going to go nuts.

It's already basically set up too ...
the magical pipe infrastructure that takes Mario to the Mushroom Kingdom in the movie looks massive and vast ... it's far too big to just connect to one place (the Mushroom Kingdom) it must be going to multiple places

Welp Hollywood, you wanted a new cinematic universe? You got one.

Honestly, a Smash Bros movie isn't very feasible - especially in a decent time frame, assuming they would follow the cinematic universe model.

Animated films take years to create. It's not like with Marvel where they can shoot multiple films that release in the space of 18 months. I can't imagine Illumination would be particularly enthused to have to juggle Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing etc.

Coversely it's hard to see multiple animation studios contributing to a shared universe. I know Dreamworks and Illumination are under the same umbrella, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to see it happen.

Edit: Plus it'd be a limit on creativity. Marvel Studios are it's own beast focused solely on the MCU - Dreamworks/Illumination are decidedly not, nor should they be.

It is also a bit sad because this movie will likely be the last real project that was initiated under him. Of course his legacy will continue to live on and Nintendo is more than him, but in the film it hit me the most emotionally to see his name. Like yeah maybe I‘m a little fanboy or the rest of the movie just didn‘t had much to offer emotionally, but it is really a nice tribute to him and shows that Nintendo knows where their success is coming from.

Super Mario Bros. 2 - 2026
Donkey Kong Country - 2027
Super Smash Brothers - 2029
Luigi's Mansion - 2031

Lets go. A Smash movie's floor will be 1 billion. That's the floor. The roof will be among the highest grossing movies ever made. Mark my words.

Also Universal is going to have to setup a full blown story division and outsourced animation studio of choice just for Nintendo movies IMO. This is the next big thing for Hollywood (sorry DC Comics/Warner Bros.).

I think the big discussion now is going to be what to do with the Zelda rights because they could chose to chase a new frontier there ... live action, and make it work big time.

It's breaking the record.

It really is good and had the PERFECT release date for it. It is starting REALLY strong, record breaking. But we have to remember that... it has the WHOLE month of april to itself. The next big movie is GoTG vol 3 which is apparently having underwhelming pre-sales. Word of mouth for Mario is great, so it should be able to keep a consistent flow at the box office.

It will def hit 1 billion. Let's see now how high it can reach though.
They are probably talking right now about what movie will be coming next. I think DK, Luigi mansion and Zelda projects are def looked on. Pikmin might even be something. Those shorts on youtube did so well.

The discussion isn’t just about how this movie will affect Nintendo anymore. This is someone finding gold in the river, and the rush is coming. The ripples are going through every studio right now, those who already have a game license are grabbing more, and those who don’t have one are going to be scrambling for them. This is Iron Man in 2008.

except Iron Man got a 94% RT score

With the profits of the Mario Movie, illumination could probably build an entire new studio just for Nintendo movies. It probably would be entirely irresponsible in today's current market to not.

Nintendo and Illumination have their really big shot at their first gaming universe, and for Universal, their first actually successful cinematic universe at all. They have been trying for decades with the Dark universe, to make it a thing. But now finally something comes up on their lap, breaks massive records, and they don't capitalize it?

I'm not sure, I feel like this is a trap to think it as an Iron Man. We're not starting at a relatively unknown character, we're talking about Mario, one of the most recognizable video game characters out there. It's more a Batman 1989 or Superman 1974 than an Iron Man that its a proof of concept that you can put X on the big screen. I don't think any video game movie is going to top Mario for a while.

Saw the movie this morning - let’s just say I was smiling pretty much the entire time. So much love and attention was given to Mario’s world here, it’s just so refreshing after having suffered through decades of crappy Hollywood adaptations of video game properties.

Hats off to Nintendo and Illumination, they’ve really knocked this one out of the park.

I don't even really see why story wise a Smash movie would be all that hard to set up.

The Mushroom Kingdom + DK Land + Yoshi Land is not the only "weird parallel universe" out there ... there's many of them, one for each of Nintendo's IP.

Turns out some big bad Super Bad is destroying or causing problems in each universe and soon they will destroy the Mushroom Kingdom + the "real world"/Brookyln if they're not stopped.

The heroes of all the other worlds rally around Mario to fight back.

I can even give you an after credits scene for the next Mario or DK movie ... one of the toads falls into a warp zone and it looks like they're done for. In the after credits scene they show up alive battered and bruised and clearly running from something but they have something they give to the Princess or DK and tell them to keep it safe .... camera cuts to ... a glowing triangle we recognize as a piece of the Triforce. Cut to black.

Melenadri was also executive producer on Puss in Boots 2 and there were reports about Shrek reboot as well. When you consider that Universal Pictures is basically distributing DreamWorks movies I think the collaboration with DreamWorks and Nintendo would be cool, especially for Zelda movie. This Universal stuff is not directly tied to Meledandri but I feel DreamWorks collaboration will still happen either way.
I believe they already confirmed a live action version of Dream Works' How To Train Your Dragon to be in production. It would make sense to me if they did that to let DreamWorks do an animated Zelda, and not have two separate midevil fantasy animated series running at the same time at the same studio...

The other studios can try but I don't think anyone has the IP on the scale of what Nintendo does, the franchises are so ingrained and so beloved in people's childhoods that the response is like an atom bomb of nostalgia going off every time they put one of these IP on the screen.

Like the last Sonic movie was pretty darn good to be honest, but it's going to come no where close to what this Mario movie is going to make. Uncharted, Tomb Raider (2018), and Mortal Kombat were all decent too ... but the roof for those films seems to be 400-450 million.

Nintendo/Universal are sitting on a monstrous gold mine ... monstrous.

They can even branch these IP into live action (Zelda, Metroid) blockbusters too.

Donkey Kong movies and everything adjacent now seems relatively easy to make a movie out of because you have a template here.

But I think Zelda, Animal Crossing and co. is stuff that is ways off. These require a completely different template and will probably take as long if not longer to get off the ground and make as this one.

People compare Nintendo to the MCU all the time, but this is way harder to pull off successfully and within fan expectations. Really curious how Nintendo will handle it.

I think Zelda is going to be a huge thing ... I think they will try live action but also have a Kid Link + Zelda that exist in the animated universe too (just like Spider-Man has live action Spider-Man + Miles Morales + animated Spider-Man).

Even Pokemon, like they didn't really do what people wanted which was just a live action version of the Pokemon IP (Detective Pikachu is something no one asked for).
