So here's a weird thought: we were talking a ways back about "Content Creator of the Year" and the legitimacy of the selection process for that (I think? Unless my brain is making up memories). Well Esquire just released their Gaming Awards winners, and their Content Creator of the Year award went to DidYouKnowGaming:

The Esquire awards page

And that's more what I'd expect. So now I'm kinda wondering (and this sounds spiteful but I don't mean it to be) is one of the requirements to be nominated for "Content Creator" at the Keighleys being a streamer with your face onscren? Do other forms of gaming content not count, the same way documentaries get disqualified from the Oscars for not having enough "original footage," despite their quality (yes I'm still sour about Senna getting snubbed a decade ago)?
True, but they also have a dedicated "Streamer of the Year" category (which is clearly what "Content Creator of the Year" means at the Keighleys) and they gave it to fucking Ludwig
i'm gonna play it to see what the fuss is about
All bugs aside (maybe they fixed those now?), it's a very pretty game with what I hear is a fairly compelling story, and also some of the shallowest RPG and open world mechanics you'll ever see
i'mma drop a spicy take real quick

imo hollow knight was a 8/10 at best
you know I can totally respect this

it's like me and Yakuza 0. most people would give that game like a 8/10 or whatever but I could make a Tim Rogers style 10 hour video review explaining exactly why that game deserves AT LEAST a 15/10

you're allowed to like hollow knight

I thought it was good but not great

tbh too hard? felt like the game didn't want me to play it
Dunno why y'all are spoiler tagging this whole conversation lol

Anyway my opinion has changed from '7.5ish out of 10' to '"maybe this game isn't for me and that's okay" out of "do I like this game"'. A lot of people really do seem to think this is one of the greatest games of all time, whereas for me the combat and general difficulty (particularly the death and map mechanics) made me lose interest, so I've come to the realization that me boiling the game down to a lower-than-usual score is just not that helpful

also would like to say that Gym Leader post-game rematches in BDSP fucking rule

I also finally beat Cynthia on my 14th go at the Elite Four and that entire gauntlet is very challenging and rewarding
Pokémon? Challenging?

Say it ain't so, Sus! Say it ain't so!

I really can't understand the comparaison between Hollow knight and Metroid.
Metroid is a fast paced Metroid-like while Hollow Knight is more of a fast paced igavania to me. Don't get why we always have to compare the two, there's nothing like Metroid except maybe Axiom Verge 1.

Forget the Hollow Knight VS Metroid debate, where are we on Hollow Knight VS Ori?
Ori (the first one) was way too short for its own good, definitely not up to par with Hollow Knight. The second one was longer but felt overly complex with all of the various options you're given.

Either way Hollow Knight wins for me.

One game I wasn't too crazy about is Celeste. I think the game is great fun, and even I love it. But I don't think it's the top 10 or even top 20 best 2D platformers. I guess it's less "I'm not too crazy about it," but more "the genre is way too crowded with games I love."

I kinda felt the opposite — the difficult challenges felt like they invited me to explore more and experiment with everything. it kind of made the premise feel more “real” — like instead of playing a game, I had to discover this world and figure out how to see more of it because exploration was so rewarding while being so risky.

and once I started figuring out how many ways there actually were to do things, including completely bypassing bosses and using the environments against tough enemies, everything felt like an expedition.

I had to get clever to survive, and sneaking around meant opening unexpected paths and getting powerful charms. All of that in turn made me better at fighting, which brought me back to the boss fights. And usually, if there’s something I can’t pull off, there are so many other branches to explore and things to find there.

It’s like what everyone had described the Super Metroid experience as to me. And I like that stuff in Super Metroid of course, but Hollow Knight feels like it’s on a whole different level of exploration and integration.

Hell, I just realized a new route that my partner and I had never considered before last night while they were playing. We’ve collectively played the game like 12 times and we’re still realizing new implications of environmental details and new ways to get places in the world long before you “normally” do

idk, I’m not a “good gamer” or talented at difficult fights, but Hollow Knight pulls me in so deep because it breathes

I have an even spicier take: Hollow Knight is better than any 2D Metroid game, and I love Metroid.
gotta disagree with ya there chief, metroid dread rips (i really gotta go back and finish it)

metroid dread has the gamefeel of driving a formula 1 car on the world's longest airport runway
hollow knight has the gamefeel of driving a cozy coupe up an icy hill

i will not elaborate

hey actually this is more smartly written than my dumb shit and I kinda wanna just copy paste this block of text into my original hot take post

I.... actually understand this 😳

People can just buy the DLC. They made a big point with the AC DLC of what still works if your subscription lapses prior to the release.

Yeah, but people would have subscribed to EP in good faith thinking they could avoid the cost of outright purchase. If it turns out they need to pay up anyway, they might have decided that wouldn't have been a better option from the start.

If DLC is to rotate, that is something that should have been made clear from the start.

First Switch year where Nintendo didn't tell people to tune into the Game Awards. Wouldn't expect anything first party

The Keighleys went from like 2 million viewers in 2014 (where they showed BOTW gameplay for the first time) to over 80 million viewers last year. An audience of that size, especially an audience that dense with people who care enough about games to watch an awards show about them, is a marketing audience a company like Nintendo would be daft to pass up. A basically-guaranteed audience of 80 million would also be why they wouldn't have felt the need to pre-advertise that they'll be there with something to show.

Interesting. Celeste was maybe my favorite 2D platformer of the last few years and likely my GOTY alongside Red Dead II that year. Just a perfect game for what it is.

Nintendo could just be keeping what they're going to show, assuming they are showing something 1st party, as a surprise. Personally I think they'll say tune in to the awards in a few hours. Also Nintendo doesn't do marketing remember.

The more likely reason not to pre announce Game Awards presence would be expectations setting, to avoid another 2019 where people got mad that the only Nintendo thing was Bravely Default 2

They’re going to be there. They didn’t tell anyone to stay tuned for our announcement of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Bayonetta 3. They don’t have to tweet anything.

Nintendo could literally tweet that they won’t have any announcements at TGA and you guys would still find arguments why there will be some

(joking :D)

I'll be watching the show while playing Astral Chain at the same time, this way i'm going to be playing an excellent game even if the show is eventually filled with meh games

We all know what Nintendo and patterns means. So i wouldn't jump into conclusions just yet. We will find in few hours, but i think they will be there, viewership is just too big for them to skip it.

I should make a 2D platformers list and see where Celeste actually stands. I think I'll try to simplify it and remove Metroidvanias and action sidescrollers (MegaMan X, Classicvania, Kirby) from the equation. Perhaps Celeste could be squeezed in there somehow.

Honestly, I feel like people who say this are just looking at the combat being ranged vs melee. HK imo has more of the feel of a Metroid (and hell, the combat is closer to Returns and Dread in philosophy than an Igavania)
Forget the Hollow Knight VS Metroid debate, where are we on Hollow Knight VS Ori?
First Ori is a great game but it isn't even a contest, WotW is my second favorite Metroidvania and pretty close to HK

Game Awards Predictions:

1. There will be games.
2. There will be awards.
3. Some of those games will be appreciated by some of us.
4. Some of those games will not be appreciated by some of us.
5. If Chrono Cross and BOTW 2 aren't shown, we riot.
