I believe what most people mean by "We don't want ultimate DX or MK8D 2" is that they have been playing the same games for a generation (or two gens in some cases). They want new experiences.

They are not saying the old games are bad in any way. But restricting Nintendo's talented devs to the SAME game for yet ANOTHER generation would be incredibly lame. We praise Nintendo for coming up with brand new ideas and making games that feel really fresh. Releasing enhanced ports for the 2nd time is not how you continue this legacy.
I totally get that but what's tough is that Mario Kart 8 got its support from Tour, which was a very unique project.

Put succinctly, I want new experiences too, but I'd rather they take another form than an iterative sequel. Accordingly I'm a big proponent of coexisting sequels at the moment, i.e. a radical new Mario Kart, a radical new Splatoon, and a radical new Smash that would see players enjoy them while continuing to play 8, 3, and Ultimate for different experiences. Replacing the last game has been the objective for too long and I'd like to see that change

Wait did I call the depths being a thing? I honestly don't remember.

Considering I don't remember what I had for dinner yesterday that's not surprising though.
we fought about it for ages pops

"there's a whole underground layer" you insisted as the passage of time made you seem crazier and crazier

I simply refused to believe that Nintendo could be so based

So you want all current games to turn into Games as a Service? To be supported throughout multiple generations? Isn't that iterative? (I don't mean this in a condescending way, I am genuinely curious)

Nintendo cannot support 2 different Mario Karts, Splatoons, etc. Their teams just aren't big enough. Even if they were, there is just no reason for them to do this. It would just split their player bases. It is not like you won't be able to play the old games again either. If you want to play MK8, you can through BC.

Pops is damn right

Anyway yeah I fervently believed there was some underground layer, but I was hoping for more than what we got. I remember theorizing that it was

  • Sacred realm (upper sky)
  • Regular sky
  • Surface
  • Surface caves
  • Dark realm (or depths as it actually was)

So yeah I guess I was pretty damn close, huh?

Support is a bit tough to quantify. I guess to get specific I'd rather see """next gen patches""" that could be part of a 70 USD new print or purchased by existing users for 10

I guess I'm saying that I'd like to see players "support" these old games by way of radically different, potentially disruptively so, sequels

or, of course, no new Smash, no new Mario Kart, new games instead. I'm starting to think that just comes down to my biases though, because I'd fistfight someone who tried to argue similarly of Pikmin

And I don't want to play a Smash game that feels like a massive downgrade because most of my favorite characters are gone. I don't see a point in having the series regress
Like I said, fighting games have been able to move on from dream rosters before. I don’t see how Smash is any different.

No no, I mean accepting it as The Only Contemporary Mario Kart/Smash Bros Of Its Kind
I don't think anyone does this. Each entry of smash and MK has their own reasons to play them. When a new mario kart game comes out, it isn't THE mario kart. It's just A mario kart. It isn't replacing anything. Unless this isn't what you're saying cause I feel like I am going in circles 😵‍💫

I don't want to see resources go to a new Mario Kart because I am an Insane Man
So basically you would deprive the Switch 2 of two franchises that would very likely be its biggest system-sellers.

It’s definitely ridiculous & unrealistic, I’ll give you that. Those games sell too much for Nintendo to ever let them end (Sakurai said as much regarding Smash).

nah you've pretty much got it

I'm just dreading the Exciting New Games being another Mario Kart and another Smash Bros

But again, it makes zero sense from a business standpoint. Why end two of your biggest franchises?

another smash bros I can understand to some degree, especially if you're not an enthusiast, but we haven't got a new Mario Kart since 2014! The Booster Course Pass pretty much tells us it won't be "just another new mario kart".

what can I say, sometimes the market chooses wrong

How would you dread this? You dread new games? 😝
as this conversation has gone on it's become very clear to me that this mindset isn't rooted in any noble support of creativity and diversity in the lineup but instead my own disdain for the two lmao

relax everybody, I don't own Nintendo yet. I asked Japan but they said they "couldn't sell a company in the private sector," whatever that means. I'm sure they have a price

I do understand what you mean to some degree though.

I really do want Nintendo to make a lot more new IPs next gen. How many did we get this gen? Just ARMS? After the success of Splatoon, a franchise born on the Wii U, I thought we would have gotten a lot more by now.

yeah see you get it

"no new mario kart" was just a little myopic on my part, my bad

I'm sure they'll have at least one weirdo game around launch to pique my interest

think it would be cool to cut all the third parties except sonic

ARMS
Astral Chain
Ring Fit Adventure
Labo
Game Builder Garage
1-2 Switch
Switch Sports kinda
Mario + Rabbids isn’t technically Nintendo, but you needed Nintendo

Isn't Nintendo building a new game studio building? Hopefully this means more staff and more resources to great more IPs whilst catering to the old ones too.

Astral Chain was platinum
Ring Fit Adventure...i don't think thats the type of new IP people want...same with labo (although a cool idea)
Mario + Rabbids (Existing Nintendo and Ubisoft IP, not new at all)

None of these reached the scales of Splatoon.

Ok I guess. They’re all technically new IP’s just like Princess Peach Showtime is a new IP. Nintendo was involved in all of them in some way. Now, if you have specific kinds of new IPs you want then that’s different.

That's not what I thought the term IP meant. Peach is an existing property. Her getting her own game doesn't make it her new IP.

By new IP, I mean entirely new characters, new world, perhaps a new genre, a completely separate franchise from any existing Nintendo property. Just like Splatoon.

Ring Fit Adventure actually exceeded Splatoon in sales, so we don’t need to downplay its impact. It’s THE big new IP of the Switch era.

the new big IP of the Switch is LABO and I will NOT hear otherwise

five games in the span of like three years, you can't beat that

I’ve wanted a new single player IP from EPD on the level of 3D Mario and 3D Zelda. But I gave up on that ever happening. Just a regular single player game with no peripherals…

Get the point? This is your new home to discuss anything and all things Nintendo.

Do you guys think a Pro revision will be necessary for the console?
I think if there is no world-stopping event like COVID, a Switch 2 Pro is possible. Seeing as some more knowledgeable people in the tech thread think this system won't always be able to hit 4k, even with DLSS, a beefier console specifically meant to hit real 4K resolutions seems like easy money for Nintendo 3-4 years in.

I saw in the other topic less Monolith staff worked on TOTK compared to BotW. I’m really hoping this means it’s because they needed more people to focus on a new IP for Switch 2. Nobody understands how elated I will be to see something new from them that’s not Xenoblade.

at least a little better than gta v or skyrim fans they havent gotten a new game in their series in over 10 years. Skyrim its been 12 years and counting

I think it's very likely to happen unless the Switch 2 sells at least as much as the Switch 1 especially since most of nintendo's handheld have had a "pro" revision (Gameboy -> Gameboy Color, DS -> DSi, 3DS -> New 3DS).
You can argue the Switch had one as well with the OLED. It didn't have the power boost people wanted, but it was clearly the same type of premium model.

We know there was a Pro model, but canned. I would except a Pro model for Switch 2 as long as no kind of Covid event happens again.
Which leaves the GBA as the only nintendo handheld to not get a Pro revision, and that can easily be explained by the fact that the successor came out less than 4 years later.
