#TrustTheProcess. Unless we get a curveball with TGA’s, next year is finally going to be the year for Prime 4 and it’s going to be super hype and amazing :)
I thought TGAs would be TOTK dlc, but now with them saying no dlc, maybe we do get Prime 4 there.

Curveball or no curveball, next year will be the year for Prime 4.

Because either next year we will finally see it, or next year we will be already talking about it.
2 0 2Prime4 either way.

For whatever reason, I always think of Animal Crossing: New Horizons as a late-era Switch game even though it released in the first half of the systems lifespan. I came out 3 years after BOTW which feels like a long gap but when the time between AC and TOTK was also 3 years + a few months. 2020 has permanently fucked up my sense of time. It also feels like AC is a late era game because it came out after 3D Zelda, 3D Mario, Smash Bros, Fire Emblem, 2D Zelda, Mario Maker, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade 2, Pokemon Sw/Sh. It's fucking crazy how much Nintendo put out in the first three years so by 2020, AC was one of the few big Nintendo franchises that had yet to debut on the system.

It's 16th here, so viva mexico

Ah shit, the iPad has really spoiled me. I’ve already got an iPhone 15 in my shopping cart, lololol.

(Though, admittedly, the iPad experience was only the final death blow, while my increasing dissatisfaction with both Android and especially Windows or Google and Microsoft led me to lose interest in these market segments bit by bit in the first place. Especially being on the quest for a new laptop has been such an annoying experience these past few weeks. I’m pretty fed up with that market in particular. Let’s see how long I’m going to stick with my current Windows machine… Goes hand in hand with me losing interest in gaming on that machine due to driver issues and bad ports. With how little time I have these days to deal with issues like that, I might just stay Switch only for the time being either way — well, that and a dash of Steam Deck here and there, I guess.)

I played three hours of the Pokemon SV DLC with my brother online tonight. I was instantly reminded why it was one of my favorite games last year as the online multiplayer is just incredible. I thought it might have trouble as it transitioned into the DLC area, but nope no issue and the moment we were in it was constant discovery of new monsters to catch left and right. 100 new ones in total!

My favorite moment was when we accidentally triggered the same story cutscene where you walk into the first building because we each approached it from opposite directions and didn’t know it was there lol. But the regularly great moments were of course were scanning the fields together for new Pokemon to catch, taking on raids together, and the regular “what was that!?” moments we shared. We only played for three hours, but I at least already caught / evolved 44 of the Pokemon in it. Hoping to play again soon.

One more week till hopefully a release date and price for megaton Musashi wired

At least use a VG version he’s got several XD
But I said best Penguin.

I hope Nintendo refresh the format of Directs a bit once the Switch 2 era begins. I feel like it kinda needs it. Obviously the games are most important, and doesn't need a huge overhaul or anything, but the current presentation format is getting a little stale imo.

What would you change, out of curiousity? I can't really think of any mayor things I'd change and looking at the knock-offs of the format by Sony and Microsoft, I still think they're nailing the format.

I agree. I don’t really like their whole vibe lately.

I mean the branding, colours and audio bites would be the more obvious things to change alongside a new console. I also feel like the voice over guy and his corny puns is a bit played out...

Maybe a little more developer stuff? That would probably slow the pacing down a bit though and runs the risk of boring everyone not interested in that specific game.

I need more stuff like Miyamoto visiting temples to talk about the inspiration for Star Fox. It was the best part about SF Zero (besides the music)!

Tbh, I just want directs to be fast paced, not too long on one game. I actually think it's too much when they give a big showcase of a game and then just reshow everything they just showed with the developer talking over the top.

I was thinking about that too, I'd like more "developer talks about game"-segments, especially when it showcases people that aren't Miyamoto or Aounuma. But it does hit the pacing.

What about the muppets?

I think this is more ok for partner showcases and indie worlds, but general directs I think it doesn't work well.

Oh god, no developer bits in Directs. That stuff belongs in those game specific showings for those people totally invested in learning as much as they can about the game in question. It really has no place in general showcases, be it Directs or State of Plays.
The Smash videos did it well, I'd say.

Had to think about my favorite penguin in a video game, and then it hit me this morning...

I don't think WW or TP HD were ever happening for Switch, they were just assumptions all along.
I think they exist (or existed at some point) but probably Corona and the Tears delay derailed plans for them appearing before the new console arrives.

So do you all think we aren't getting WW/TP HD before the NG Switch or do you think there is still a chance in the February Direct?
I think they're likelier to appear in the 2024 through 2028 period than they were in the last few years. I've made the point in longer posts, but by late 2018 Nintendo probably figured they had enough Zelda projects coming to Switch and so there wasn't a pressing need for further remasters.

Wind Waker and Twilight Princess now become more likely because they're easy cross-gen releases for Nintendo, and we know - bar new 2D Zelda emerging - it's going to be quite a wait for more new Zelda. Nintendo won't let the franchise remain dormant in that period and remasters are an obvious option.

you all know by now how I feel about the modern Nintendo Direct

for what it is though I thought this week's show was pretty good. it didn't make me want to turn it off which is more than I can say for a lot of newer Directs. I didn't even like most of the games, but I guess at this point I've gotten good at tuning them out

am I a bit sad that the key to tolerating Directs again was learning to tune them out? of course. but at the end of the day this is an almost hour long infomercial so it's doing all that can be expected of it. I'd much rather see developers talk about their creative vision and goals but most people want thirty second trailers of old ports since they actually want to, you know, buy a fuckton of video games. I'm more interested in just thinking a lot about a small handful

if E3 2014 didn't have the stupid Robot Chicken bumpers it'd be the perfect Nintendo presentation.

I always thought TP and WW would make for good late gen games. Like something you release shortly before the new system launches. They're not really system sellers but can help satisfy a large userbase who aren't going to be owning a new Switch on Day 1. We have been expecting them to show up for years but if you look at all the Zelda releases, there really hasn't been much room for them.

2017 - BOTW
2018 - Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition + BOTW being an evergreen
2019 - Link's Awakening and Cadence of Hyrule
2020 - Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
2021 - Skyward Sword
2022 - Where TOTK was originally planned to be released
2023 - TOTK

TOTK will continue to be a major seller for months and months. I assume that they will want it to have at least a year on the market all to its own. So maybe we'll see them sometime after May. And hey, maybe this is the perfecting timing for them. It could be a Cuber's wet dream. Thousand-Year Door, Metroid Prime HD, Pikmin 1 and 2, throw in Twilight Princess, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime 2 (and 3), and maybe F-Zero GX, that makes for solid year or two of pandering to a specific age demographic.

Let’s talk demos (and F-Zero 99)!
  • F-Zero 99: I never got into these games growing up, but this is really fun. Being able to end in higher ranks simply because a lot of other cars went kaboom is pretty funny. It also looks fantastic, simultaneously SNES-like sprites but in high def, if that makes any sense? Definitely gonna be playing more of it throughout the year.
  • Star Ocean: Never played this before. What a lovely PS1-ass JRPG. Will always have a soft spot for sprites traveling around in isometric 3D worlds. Still getting the hang of the battle system but it’s already pretty cool. It’s hard to get the dodge right! Loving the QoL features as well, the speed up really helps you get through the cutscenes. I really don’t need to be adding JRPGs to my to-play list but I think I’ll be buying this somewhere down the line.
  • Patrick’s Parabox: Devs keep coming up with cool and creative ideas for sokoban. The core premise of this game is deceptively simple— put the boxes in the correct spots, and sometimes the boxes are their own levels you can enter by shrinking yourself. You gotta think not only outside, but inside the box! Another one that elevated itself to a sure purchase down the line.
  • Silent Hope: So weird seeing the typical HM cows and the RF woolies on one game. I think the combat is rather slow and unengaging, and there doesn’t seem to be much benefit to swapping heroes aside from minor buffs. Choosing a hero should be more meaningful— for example, choosing the farmer means no one is tending the fields so your crops grow slower, but you’re more likely to find seeds in the abyss. And maybe the higher level a character is, the better they are at their HQ functions.
  • Gunbrella: The titular weapon is great fun. Feels smooth to dash around, and great idea to pair the dash with a bullet-reflect mechanic so you’re not always cowering behind your umbrella.
  • Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince: The least visually pleasant demo I played today, but man did I miss this franchise. Monster designs are still charming, and all the scouting and tournaments and fusions from DQM Joker is present here. Word of warning: your save file in the demo DOES NOT carry over to the full game, though you will keep the monster you’ve got.
  • Dave the Diver: utterly addicting gameplay loop where you harpoon fish and gather materials during the day, and help run a sushi restaurant by night. If the full game releases and there’s no notable bugs or anything, it’s an instant buy for me.

I would say keep the developer interviews for promotional stuff leading up to or after the release of a game, for me I watch the directs to see all the upcoming games and once I am aware of them is when I want to learn more.

It would be better if there were more Iwata style interviews outside of the directs for most of their releases instead of just their big releases.

Goes hand in hand with me losing interest in gaming on that machine due to driver issues and bad ports
Definitely feeling that this morning. Not sure what the heck is going on but Firefox started locking up the entire OS randomly on me while I was eating breakfast. Did a GPU driver update and magically things seem to be working correctly again 🤞

The older I've gotten, the more I'm increasingly "I just want my stuff to work". Back in college I'd spend way too much time tinkering with my setup and configuring games. Now that I don't have near infinite free time any time something breaks there's this mental calculus of "ok, how much time is this going to take to fix" and panic / despair for anything that's more than 15 minutes or, even worse, a complete unknown.

Unsurprisingly, I'm back to consoles for most of my gaming needs (there's certain genres/series I still exclusively play on PC) and I'm ok with my iOS devices not being nearly as customizable as Android or Windows.

So do you all think we aren't getting WW/TP HD before the NG Switch or do you think there is still a chance in the February Direct?
Could still happen but I’m not particularly expecting them. I think they’ll come eventually even if it’s Switch 2 though.

Is there a thread for the Pokemon DLC?
Folks have just been using the Scarlet/Violet thread. I threadmarked where the DLC chatter started. I thought about doing a thread for the DLC, but the standard thread wasn't that active, and it's still not all that active even with the DLC released, so I dunno if doing so would have been the best use of my energy, ha.
