That’s not true at all. If we knew the vaccines were losing their effectiveness that quickly, we would be pushing for semi-annual vaccinations.

That might be a misunderstanding of what “effectiveness” means for a COVID vaccine. The vaccine does not make you totally immune from infection/reinfection. Its most important effect is that it greatly decreases the risk of getting severe infection and needing hospitalization. The new bivalent vaccines can decrease those nasty complications in otherwise healthy adults by up to 85%! And for that reason I highly recommend getting the updated vaccines.

If your goal is to avoid getting COVID, as I’ve mentioned, proper hygiene, wearing masks and social distancing are still the most optimal methods. Which is why it’s a shame that people have stopped being vigilant (also part of the reason why we’re getting new strains still).
Okay gotcha, good to know. What I was seeing was graphs and stuff that showed, I think the number of antibodies present after one month and then six months, and the six months number was way down. But again, I'm possibly totally misunderstanding (or the stuff I was seeing was totally misleading). My main concern is that I live with my dad, who already has respiratory problems, so if either of us catch covid it'd be bad. And I'm now the only person I know who hasn't got it yet. Tryina keep it that way. 😅 And I still mask up and such, but I'm always the only person in any building with one (again, almost every local business around here had no-masking signs on their doors when covid started spreading, this place is a danger zone), but I have seen stuff about how masks stop the person wearing one from spreading, not so much stop the person wearing one from receiving. So I'm just.. like, really needing those vaccines to kick some ass, since I can't stay unemployed and hide at home forever 😅

I only partially know the reference but am completely delighted
It's this one:

You have my sympathies.

how masks stop the person wearing one from spreading, not so much stop the person wearing one from receiving
Don’t worry, masks work both ways. Do keep in mind that you still need to maintain social distance; masks are not quite as effective if someone coughs at you point-blank.

I'm just.. like, really needing those vaccines to kick some ass
Definitely recommending the updated vaccine for both you and your dad. COVID sucks but the vaccines will at least help stave off the worst problems. Vaccines also lower the risk of spread!

I've seen so many tweets trash talking TotK lately, what happened
That’s just Twitter innit?

Thank you for the updates, @meatbag! I was also under the impression we needed to get booster shots semi-regularly until it got to a point where Covid lived and died along the other flu strains where those vaccines could be mixed in with everything else you get in the shot for the autumn flu season.

I think I got my last booster (which was bivalent) back in November or December last year, and that was my fourth dose. I'm still a touch nervous around my grandma and parents, but I guess it's like you said all we can do to mask up, wash hands, etc

Got my BA4/5 vaccine last month before heading to Japan; didn't wanna ruin the trip by getting sick. Also, I don't want my autism to run out so I needed a top-up.

My antibodies right now:

Don’t feel bad about being confused. It’s a new disease and we’re literally learning as we go. I myself also got two boosters because that’s what we surmised would be effective at the time. I expect COVID treatment guidelines will continue to be in a flux of relatively quick updates and revisions.

Anyway, I know I promised some pictures of Switzerland, so here are of Luzern. Honestly my phone does not do the place justice.

And for good measure, the delicious rösti that @Dardan Sandiego recommended:

That looks delicious and I need one

<puts doctor’s coat on>

The current recommendation is that anyone older than 5 years old (and doesn’t have other significant diseases or immune compromise) only need one updated vaccine from either Pfizer or Moderna, regardless of your previous immunization status. Note: it specifically has to be the updated or “bivalent” vaccine.

On the topic of boosters, studies are mixed! The data does not point to a clear benefit from getting annual boosters. I personally do not recommend getting regular booster vaccinations as in my clinical experience, it doesn’t sway the scales significantly. It’s still better to practice proper hygiene, mask usage and social distancing!
It has been a bit since my last shot. This means I should seek out the updated shot, yeah?

There are definitely some #gamer undertones to the whole BG3 discussion.

-There's the crowd who are against the AAA live service model and are propping up BG3 as the gaming messiah, despite there having been plenty of great non-GaaS this year alone
-It's effectively a PS5 console exclusive for the time being and the PS5 release will going head to head with Starfield which is an Xbox console exclusive
-Because Larian is stating that the Series S is the reason why an Xbox version isn't coming out at the same time, it's given fuel for people who want to argue about Microsoft's console strategy and how the Series S is holding back gaming in general
-TOTK gets brought up because it's seen as the GOTY front-runner so people are trying to set up the narrative that if it does win over BG3, it's only because of nostalgia. That of course wouldn't apply to Baldur's Gate...checks notes....3, the third game in one of the beloved CRPG franchises of all time.

They should probably just lock the Series S out of the split screen mode. They do it for Steam Deck already.

Just an FYI there will be a new vaccine available in the Fall in the US similar to how the annual influenza vaccine is handled:

Also, I should probably respond to my own prompt shouldn't I?

Weekly Question #1

How would you personally define "Weird Nintendo"?

I feel like this is one of those "you know it when you see it" sorts of things. That said, I think it's any time or any thing Nintendo does that goes against pre-conceived notions and just does their own thing usually in a fairly committed or confident manner. Sometimes this ends up in the form of really quirky games or franchises like Splatoon with its absolute commitment to seafood references and wordplay while also just being a game about humanoid squids that are also kids set in a post-ecological disaster world. Or it's the dual announcements back in 2019 of Labo and Ring Fit (which is another game that just goes all-in on thematically appropriate references and wordplay) which I think were fairly out of the box thinking (particularly Labo). Or just some of the absolutely quirky software like Mario Paint, Game Boy Camera, and Mario Maker which have this incredibly playful and creative style to them while also being a toy or a tool that enables the end user to be creative as well.

And then there's the whole decision around changing their annual E3 presentation to a pre-recorded stream and all the weird and wonderful little skits and memes that arose from that over the years.

also, horse

Apparently Microsoft has a feature parity clause between Series S and X. It's a tricky situation. The Series S probably makes up half or more of Series owners. You don't want to give those owners that they are treated less outside of things like resolution and framerate. You also don't want to other developers cutting features because they don't want to put in the time to program the game to work correctly on the Series S.

That's one of the downside of Pro versions. I feel like it gave developers an excuse to not optimize their games on the base consoles. FF15 didn't run all that great on base PS4 and they obviously just brute forced the performance on the PS4 Pro.

BG3 is unnecessarily graphically advanced. If such game can't run on Series S, I don't think it should on anywhere else. Scalability is the keyword for this generation yet studio heads always go for "I want this game to look as good and realistic as it can because its my vision". Yeah. those "visions" are the things that cause unhealthy work environments. Extra realism is not gonna increase game's sales or its metacritic score. It's a personal choice. I'm very suspicious of Larian, no way they made this game without severe crunch conditions.

I will say a pandemic that resulted in a virus that you need to get yearly boosters for in addition to your flu shot is a great way to get over your fear of needles real quick.
I still don't look when they jab me though.

While my fear of needles has lessened lately, my fear of people has unfortunately greatly increased. 😅

Jesus Christ fami I just noticed the opening/story lullaby of Yoshi's Island fits perfectly with the Soviet Union anthem and now I can't stop thinking Yoshi saved baby Mario from capitalism 😭😭😭🙏🙏🙏

I mean, it runs on Steam Deck. It’s not too much for the Series S, they’re just having trouble with the split screen mode.

New trailer for this rad Bionicle fangame… and they got Cryoshell to do a new song for it XD boy that’s some nostalgia to the old ads! Oh and a demo is coming

“Coming this fall, we take beloved classic character Pinnochio and follow his story as he gets a job at a bakery to pursue his passion for dessert. And also it’s a punishing dystopian Souls-like full of nightmarish automatons - somehow. Why? Find out in:

Pies of P”
You know, I greatly enjoyed the demo. Beating enemies up with baking plates and rolling pins and all that. But I fear I won't get to play the full game this year at all. Maybe not even next year... 😅

Sad news everyone, the actor playing Luffy in Netflix's One Piece adaption is a Coober

Even worse, he's 19, meaning he became a Coober after the Wii was already out. Maybe Netflix will get him a Gamecube one of these days.

Will definitely take this one. Got the new covid strain last month and it was a tough son of a bitch, I was very sick for a week (and two weeks for my wife). Good luck with that @Dragoncaine btw, hope that it won’t last too long!

I just wish Switzerland hadn't stopped reimbursing vaccines, as they decided to do at the beginning of 2023. For a country so rich, they can be very cheap sometimes.

Timing is about right, September 2023 is exactly one year from when the updated vaccines got rolled out, which means we finally get data on how it holds up over a year.

It has been a bit since my last shot. This means I should seek out the updated shot, yeah?
Simply put, if your last shot was the updated shot, you don’t need another jab. If your last shot was the old vaccine, get the updated shot.

I actually am in therapy and get this: my therapist thinks Nintendo is good for me.
<furiously prescribes Nintendo for my patients>

There are definitely some #gamer undertones to the whole BG3 discussion.
Why can’t people just enjoy a meaty CRPG

I found Rift Apart a little disappointing after all of the buzz surrounding it. The selling point was that it was one of the first true next generation experiences, but I felt like it was just a real spiffy PS4 game.
I went in mostly blind and without any expectations so I'm mostly just enjoying it as exactly that. But the portal tech, aside from the visual novelty, seems fairly underutilized so far.

Swen has already stated how they avoid crunch.

IGN: Pikmin 4 is causing some poorly organized people to panic

No joke, but ever since Pikmin 4 is in our house, my two younger ones have started to make the sounds the Pikmin do when they carry something back to the Onion or the Beagle when they have to do some chores.

I'm not too bothered by it, but the Mrs. is irritated.

Although she enjoys that they complain less about having to do chores since that started, so i guess it's a win ultimately?

UK based peeps, The Game Collection are doing their £10 back in reward points on selected titles offer again. This time it includes Super Mario Wonder and Super Mario RPG

They are £42.95 each so this effectively makes them £32.95, payment is taken straight away and points added to your account on despatch. Good deal if you are planning to order anyway, I’ve ordered them 2 and Batman Arkham Trilogy

god only knows how excited I am for Dragon's Dogma II
I hope we'll hear a lot more about it at TGS, hopefully it releases early 2024

Getting real sick of these dickhead spam accounts that keep showing up to bump threads from a million years ago. 🤣 It's almost always in The Roost, too!

No Nintendo and no beer: me in me 20s

Yes Nintendo and no beer: me in my 30s

That's me. But with beer. Yes Nintendo. Yes beer.

But preferably not at the same time. Otherwise, you boot up the Switch the next morning to find Link with almost all his hearts missing in the Depths but with this really cool new armor you don't remember finding.

He sounds like a cool guy. Makes me wish I still have Netflix so that I can catch the One Piece live action.

You know you can stop with the beer before your head hits the "And Now for Something Completely Different" phase of the drinking part?

(Shamefully hides that he has had those situations but not because of alcohol (because he rarely drinks) but because of playing games dead-tired and half asleep)

Today feels like a good day to wear this t-shirt:

So i'm wearing it right now.

But, i am a bit disappointed that quite a few people around me don't/didn't understand it. :[
