lovely new footage from the direct

plus HD ports of Pikmin & Pikmin 2 out today

great trailer, excited to try the demo

the whole series being on switch is awesome, didn't expect 1 and 2 ports

fascinated by the Dandori battles seemingly having splitscreen even in single-player. it’s seeming safe to assume that that’ll be the competitive multiplayer mode instead of bingo battle.
no indication of co-op in the main game still! but honestly I’d be excited about only controlling one captain at a time again…

I admittedly made myself look away during the montage at the end where they were showing a bunch of environments and enemies. but all the new stuff looks great

and they’ve got my money on Pikmin 2 for sure. will probably buy both if the price for each isn’t toooo bad

Pikmin 3 was one of, maybe even my favourite game on the Wii U but I'm not convinced on this so far. Hopefully the demo can sell it for me.

Looks absolutely amazing, by far the best thing at the Direct for me. The Glowey Pikmin are adorable. I'm glad that this game seems like it's going to be quite meaty, but hopefully not to the point of being tedious like Pikmin 2. Fully expecting this to be my favorite Nintendo game of the year.

The game looks great and I have no doubt I'm gonna love it, but the setting just makes it look so much less grand than 3 to me. The environments in 3 were a lot more natural, whereas here with the house/playground/yard setting, everything looks more toy-like

Bets on if Furry Pikmin Guy is Olimar?

I'm going with yes unless we've actually seen Olimar in the last trailer and I just missed/forgot about it

Pretty much blown away by this TBH. People noticed the size of the game when it was put on the eShop and compared it to Pikmin 3 Deluxe and that 4 is like twice the size and wondered why? Well I think we saw some of the reasons why right there. All Pikmin types ever including 2 new ones + Oatchi, environments look much grander and detailed, indoor and underground locations when 3 had neither, Dandori battles, customisation of the player character and upgrades/progression systems for the first time, nocturnal gameplay which looks quite different indeed, and the usual new enemies, treasures, etc.

I dunno I feel like this game just isn't getting the attention it deserves. We were complaining a couple/few years back when Nintendo were releasing Pikmin 3 Deluxe alongside loads of other old games like Miitopia, Xenoblade Chronicles DE, Super Mario 3D All-Stars and wondering where all the new games were and why Pikmin 4 in particular was taking so long and well I'm very glad now they took their time because they are really pushing the boat out with this one.

I'm fully on board the Pikmin 4 hype train now. I was unsure at first, since I personally found Pikmin 3 to be a bit disappointing, but the fact that they seem to be taking more after Pikmin 2 with this game has got me excited. Seeing the caves and a GBA SP as a treasure put a smile on my face.

My only concerns at this point are the seeming lack of co-op modes, and whether or not the Piklopedia and journal entries will be included. I used to love reading Olimar's notes in Pikmin 2, and since we're creating our own character now I'm worried that might not be included.

The only bummer is co op being gone seemingly, but hopefully challenge mode is at least back.

Otherwise, this continues to look great.

Co-op isn’t gone, it’s just not split screen with each player controlling their own captain.

I do wonder if winged and rock types are getting the treatment purples and whites got in 3 (challenge mode only). Maybe I missed it but I don't think we've seen them in the game footage yet.

Edit: I AM blind after all. They show up at the end. Dope!

So based on the trailer, seems Night Expeditions are less actual exploration at night time and more some sort of specific mode where you protect the Lumenols from attack? Then again, I can't tell what the objective would be if so

I really need to play the demo.
Also my fear of pikmin2 shitty caves coming back is completely gone now that I've seen what they've done with them in the new game, they look sick and well designed. Now I just need the demo.

The three types of Pikmin at a time thing seems really concerning

Like, so every time you run into glass and don't have Rock Pikmin on you, you'll have to run back to base and come back, and then run the Rock Pikmin back to base to swap them out for another kind?

That sounds awful. And how does this factor into caves, you'd think there'd be a crazy amount of backtracking because "whoops, not allowed to have ____ Pikmin on me right now, gotta come all the way back here later". Seems unnecessarily tedious

Caves in 2 did warn you about what hazards were inside before you entered, so hopefully this will be the same case.

But yeah, I'm surprised they didn't at least cap it at 5 types like past games. Hopefully it feels better in game than it sounds.

I imagine the design decision to limit you to three pikmin types is not arbitrarily made. The world is likely designed to work with that limitation.

Heh, along with the reprint pikmin 3 deluxe got a patch to update its icon to the new series logo!

The actual title screen is unaffected tho,

Pikmin type limitations aside, this game looks like it might be the ultimate Pikmin experience

Between the caves and indoor areas, the game looks huge, way bigger than 3, thankfully

UE4 has some problems on Switch so I expect some performance issues and dynamic resolution
Dynamic resolution is more common than not at this point for EPD games anyway (I think, just going off the top of my head).

It has piqued my interest though. Using UE4 when they already ported Pikmin 3 is curious, and would imply more external help than I expected. But maybe not? Who knows.

EPD wouldn't compromise on an engine if the results were unsatisfactory, I feel.

Don't know how to feel about the 3 Pikmin type limitations, but that is pretty much where I'm at with each new trailer, I don't know how to feel about it, do hope it turns out good tho. 1 and 3 are among my favorite games, and it has been a good while since a new main game.

I'm sure they balanced the game well around only having 3 types at once. But it was also just cool to have all Pikmin types out at once just from a vibe standpoint lol.

This is almost like choosing you own rpg party now.

Hold up.

If you can only have 3 Pikmin types out at a time, then how will Purple/White transformations work?

Unless maybe they aren't counted in that limit?

What excites me most is Pikmin 4 looks like a sequel to Pikmin 2 whereas Pikmin 3 was more of a follow up to Pikmin 1. I always felt that Pikmin 2 was vastly superior to the original game and that Pikmin 3 was a step back for the series.

Took the time to watch the full new trailer again and oh boy does it look jam packed. It's another instance where I can't quite tell how everything comes together, but it really looks like they've pushed the boat out. Hopefully it comes together well.

Also surprised at how good the house environments look. The lighting they've achieved with Unreal 4 is doing good work for the game's sense of perspective.

Yeah that's a pretty big question

I think it would make the most sense to have the limit only be based on how many types you can take out from the Onion? Otherwise you'd have to intentionally take less types to exchange them for Purple and Whites (or any other flower you come across), which doesn't sound great at all, even for someone who's fine with the original concept of being limited to 3 types
