StarTopic The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom |ST| Linkin' Parts (Please Tag All Spoilers)

Love the way the game was bookended with the intro and ending. The intro was really such a highlight, just stepping back in time to 2019 and finally experiencing that setting, music, and atmosphere in living color. It was such a bad decision to waste Zelda's character and not have any more moments like that with her. The companion system was so massively upgraded from the likes of Yunobo's escort mission in BotW, too. It would have been great. Oh well.

Somehow I just discover new things in the depths. Decided to spend several hours down there because I have it riddled with icons of things to get to...and yeah I had a lot of fun.

One of the game's greatest accomplishments is how great it feels just to exist in this world.
In everything from the way it's structured, with countless little adventures branching off in every direction like the boughs of a giant tree, to how appealing the art direction and sound design is, it's one of those rare games where I could wander around for an hour with no particular objective and still have a fantastic time.

I have legit spend hours in this game just gathering stuff to cook with, and cooking.
Like BotW, it's just perfect game if you just want to wander aimlessly around the world. This may sound weird, but I really like driving around in my vehicle in the depths with no light on. It's kind creepy but relaxing at the same time. The sky is a great place to wander around too, but too bad most sky islands are kind small so you run into the edge pretty quickly

Question for those who already saw the ending

I just finisihed building Mineru's body and on my way to get her secret stone. How much is left before the final fight?

Shrine/caves question (amount and stuff)

I’m at, like, 100 shrines right now and I’ve scoured the heck out of the overworld for the ones in plain sight, marked every single lightroot without a corresponding shrine in the overworld and all the shrine quests I have left, but still end up with 130 shrines and I heard it’s around 150.

Does that mean that there’s just a lot of shrines inside caves?

Based on my count there’s 32 shrines on Sky Islands and 120 in the overworld including caves

This question varies depending on the Depths sidequests you've done, but if you know where to go, probably about an hour and change before you encounter the final boss.

we will die one day and not be able to experience it anymore
This is a copout because this is a criticism of mortals, not TotK. Boooo!

I love finding a spot that’s maybe just a cluster of trees, or a pond, filled with herbs and critters. I’ll spend a couple of minutes chilling out and grabbing stuff. It’s so relaxing.

On the flipside I also just raided (ability spoiler) a laser-filled Yiga camp on my mech and boy was that fun.

I thought I'd want to take a break after beating the story but I've been thinking about the game all day and here I am at 1 AM Shrine hunting again...

There is something freeing though that I don't have to spoiler dodge anymore, I feel like I can play as little or as much as I want. And I'm still discovering cool shit, like this Shrine in a cave in the Neculda region where you have to carry a crystal through a cave while dodging boulders.

Preaching to the choir here, but, man. What a video game.

I got sick of the crystal shrines but every now and then they did something cool with them. In general, I feel like the ones in the sky islands are some of the lesser ones.

I don't mind them necessarily though I just ran into my second one in a row which is kind of a "really?!" feeling lol

But I also just found this other cool ass cave while doing so, so I consider it more than worth it

TOTK takes this one easily. It's soothing and relaxing, which is exactly what you want when you're figuring out how to launch Link across the room on a seesaw.

The audio and visuals of the BOTW shrines had a harshness to it that I never vibed with.
I never get bored with BOTW shrines audio but am giving this one to TotK probably. Hard to tell, since the game is so young. BOTW shrine theme is so nostalgic to me at this point. Both are great imo.

The respective shrine music just tells me that the Zonai were much more chill than the Sheikah. Different times, I guess!

Just found a cave behind a waterfall. This is what video games are all about.

Now that I'm at 101 Shrines though I should go to bed. No excuse to let this game ruin my sleep schedule after I've beaten the story mode.

Probably everyone's figured this out already, but I discovered this on my own and I'm very proud of it:
When you find a bunch of explosive barrels, don't use them. Instead, fuse them together, go to your Autobuild history and make them a favourite. You now have summonable explosive barrels. Autobuild has a lot of range, so you can safely call them far from an enemy camp and drop them from above :)

this Shrine in a cave in the Neculda region
Oh, that one was fun. The crystal shrines on the surface tend to be better than the ones in the sky haha.

Who did it better?
Tears, easily.

So Zelda stole our house I suppose
And after Link paid for all of it, too!

Instead, fuse them together, go to your Autobuild history and make them a favourite
… I have not actually thought of this before, and that’s brilliant.

Well that's brilliant

The amount of possibilities in this game are INSANE

I'm intentionally progressing through the game pathetically slow and having a blast 75 hours into my game and I've barely done shit.

Figure I may as well take my sweet ass time with the best game ever (so far) and stretch it out to a year long 600 hours or so.

Even if you do play fast, the amount of stuff to do is mind blowing.

Honest question: are any of you using the map as a rune ability? I can't even think of a moment I'd prefer that rather than pressing the minus button.
Definitely feels out of place, I've used it only once to check if it really is just the map and a couple of times accidentally. If I had to guess, I'd say they put something there to have eight skills to split evenly on a circle.

Yeah, never used that as well. Get rid of this Amiibo-nonsense there too.
One should have been an ability button. Press it, game pauses and you select one of your companions, like choosing an autobuild.

Definitely would have removed the map and amiibo functions from the quick dial wheel. Or at least let us customize the circle. I would have put (ability spoiler) the toggle for the companions there instead.

Finished the story over the weekend. I absolutely loved this game! I think I’ll have to take most of my thoughts over to the spoiler thread, but I’ll say that the new powers and the freedom to build your way toward success really hit me just right. I have lots of side content left undone still, so I’m looking forward to going even further into making weird stuff. The interplay between the three levels of exploration was great and it made the depths make a lot more sense to me once I realized how things were designed to necessitate each other.

I ended up getting way into the story to an extent that really makes me want to replay some older games in the series with my new lens on them. I have never once been concerned with the story in a Zelda game, so this was perhaps the biggest surprise of all. The dragon tear memories were very well done, I thought, but it’s the characters and quests that hooked me most.

I hit a point where I just had to see the story’s conclusion, but as far as I’m concerned I have a bunch of the Best Stuff left to go. 10 minutes after seeing the credits I met a mostly naked old man who asked me to strip down and do a Survivor-esque challenge against the elements against him. That’s the shit right there. Sometimes the material rewards for side quests are underwhelming, but TotK provides a much more compelling reason to quest: almost all of them are fun, funny and a little bit surprising to boot. Can’t wait to dig in further.

Accidentally found my way to the 8th geoglyph (by hitching a ride on Naydra and gaining enough distance and altitude that I was suddenly near the geoglyph), so now I'm wrapping up the last 3. Not sure how this will change my approach to the game, but I can already see where this is going.

Zelda is very obviously the fourth dragon and presumably still has the Master Sword after she took it back to the past from Link at the Temple of Time

Edit - one way the sky is a great thing to have is that it's enabling me to get to the geoglyphs without 'spoiling' the surface. I can just glide to locations from the existing parts of the map I've unlocked without needing to do extensive exploration on the ground, which saves a lot of gameplay and exploration time for later.

Explored more of the Depths yesterday and I'm more sold on them now...

I first explored the Central Hyrule area of the Depths and was a little underwhelmed. Besides from the cool atmosphere of the area there wasn't much to find other than a few mining spots.

However, I'm now exploring the Depths below Kakariko and West Necluda and I've found 3 Yiga establishments, a much larger mine and even a unique Depths miniboss that completely kicked my ass! I hope the rest of the Depths is as fun as in this area.

Completed the memories quest and got the thing.

Yup.

Pretty funny how I finally do the shrine I forgot to return to in the early game, and it wants to teach me how to use a bow. You’re doing good, shrine. That’ll do.

Just a general progression question for people who have beat the game, just wondering on my progress:

I've finished the four 'Regional Phenomena' dungeons and now Purah is pushing me to head towards Hyrule Castle, is this the final dungeon / end of the story or is there lots more after? I just don't want to run in and finish the story right away if it is

Thanks!

No, it is not. You still have some work to do.

It is not the final dungeon. There is a bit more, but I would not consider it "lots more". Take your time with exploring and other stuff, I'd say. You will reach the end of the story sooner than later.

That was fun! But SUCH an underwhelming reward, I'm actually shocked.

Pretty cool that you learn the final boss' location here, though. Is this the first time you're actually supposed to learn this info? I accidentally discovered his location like 30 hours into the game while running around the depths lmao
Yes, if you reach the point in the game where you're supposed to go fight the final boss now, Purah's like "hmmm where could he be? Maybe talk to Josha?"
So one question regarding the order of the visions and the main quest

Is it pointed at any moment you should visti the deku tree before finding the master sword? Because doing all the visions in order clearly tells you where it is, so found weird I finally found the way in to the forest and saving it for it to tell "I can help you to fin the sword.... oh you already have it, go on..."
Yes, if you follow the main story quests without getting the Master Sword, at a certain point a character will go "you need to find the Master Sword! Maybe ask the Great Deku Tree?" If you haven't been to the Korok Forest by this point there will also now be Koroks outside the Lost Woods giving heavy hints of how to get there
Question for those who already saw the ending

I just finisihed building Mineru's body and on my way to get her secret stone. How much is left before the final fight?
Not much. Just Dragon Tears and/or Master Sword if you haven't got those yet. Then it's finale time.

oh just you wait honey haha. That is just an appetizer to the fun down there.

Double that and thats where I'm at. Technically half way done but I presume I'll be finished in the next 50 hours of gameplay.

Maybe this is common knowledge but if you're like me and always running low on arrows, the Outpost Ruins east from the Great Plateau have tons of crates and barrels with arrows in them.

A few days after ending the game I feel like I liked BOTW more and Totk is probably my least favorite 3d Zelda(BOTW as my previous least favotire). I recognize it's a improvement over BOTW in a lot of aspects but it lacks the same impact. I envy those experiencing this before Botw. I still have a lot of sidequests to do so my opinion on it might improve. But don't feel the motivation to keep playing it so I gave it a pause.

Some points:

Tutorial area - Botw handled this much better. Plateau was really great. It was great to be there. Totk made me want to rush through it to go to surface.

Koroks, shrines, camps - I was burned out from these BOTW mechanics and didn't have patience to interact with them most of times. In the end I finished the game with around 50 shrines and 100 korok seeds. Also skipped most of enemy camps when I noticed the rewards were the same.

Ultrahand - This mechanic is impressive and an achievement but the game didn't provided me a good reason to spend my time building complex stuff. A regular plane or a ballon solved my problem 90% of the time.

Memories - I think BOTW handled this mechanic better. In BOTW the photos with the locations would only make sense if you visited that region. So it was something that you would be gathering alongside with you progress. Totk shows a map with all memories location so when I watched the first cutscene got invested and rushed through all region craving for more.

Sky - What a disappointment, I was thinking this would be the redemption of SS sky and in the end I liked SS sky much more. The comparisons with sonic frontiers were accurate and everything was a huge playground.

Depths - Mixed feeling. Love the mood and when discovered some locations like the factory. But it's too big and most of stuff are related to zonaite mining and treasure. And most of treasure I got there were amiibo stuff that feels more like fan service than serving the lore.

Companions - How is this better than creating items with their powers? In the end I needed to dismiss everyone because I kept using them by accident when I need to press A to do something.

Story - Another disappointment. Interesting stuff happened in the past and Ganondorf don't do anything for the entire game. He was as bland as calamity Ganon though this time with a face.

Towns - In the end people worried about no new towns were right. There is this camp with some new characters but that's it. Huge areas like Sky and Depths have no town.

Caves and Ascend - Probably my favorite additions to this game. Last time I had this fun with a mechanic and used it a lot was with the paint link from ALBW.
It's a pity it was introduced in a game with the same map. Using this to make new discoveries would be awesome.

Zonai devices - This is items making a come back. Really like them. Only drawback is that after using them I'd need to go to depths to mine for more zonaite. So I saved them a lot to avoid doing that until I had another reason to go to dephs.

Dungeons - Nice to see different themes coming back. The release N things mechanic making a coming back from BOTW is really formulaic and uninspired though. I did fire first and got really pumped up for the next ones. In the end only lightning temple fulfilled my expectations. What a great temple btw.

Fusion and Durability - Durability sucks for me. Fusing material with zonai weapons helps a lot and usually had some great fused design. For common equipment I just bothered fusing near a boss.

Ending - I really liked the ending sequence(though didn't care about the post credit scene). Much better ending than BOTW and also really enjoyed the last fight. Love this idea of a easy fight at the end. It's really frustrating to think you finished the boss and you get to an even more difficult boss phase. It feels like a great reward. Another great thing is food abuse being blocked in the last fight. I had a few gloom dishes and it made the fight pretty tense.

It feels like I read a lot of complaints online regarding the Water Temple, but I just finished it and.... it's fun.

Maybe the extremely open concept threw some people off, especially those who want a return to the pre-BotW dungeons, but I thought the puzzles were pretty great and the combination of water plus low gravity was well-used. Maybe it was a bit short, but it was cool.

I really liked it.

I know it’s flat and not super layered but the zero gravity traversal and combat IMO made it the most fun dungeon so far. Doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and the boss’s design is underwhelming but mechanically tricky to keep up with.
