StarTopic The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom |ST| Linkin' Parts (Please Tag All Spoilers)

Pretty sure I'll do the Zora and Goron segments back to back, and go to the Lost Woods after that (I've seen them from the sky, and activated the tower near there)... but I've got hours and hours before I get back to that stuff. Got a shrine waiting in the sky above Necluda to take me up to 52 shrines completed, then I'll be dropping back down to Hateno to check what's changed, and then it'll be Kakariko to check out the ruins.

If someone have not played BOTW and only started with Tears they are missing so much, if you played BOTW you can get a sense of what's changed, what happened to some NPC's, towns/places, and especially to main chracters like Purah. If you only started with TotK it's kinda the shame.

So I was never sure of this in BOTW and am unsure of it here - are any weapons truly one-of-a-kind or limited spawns? Or will everything eventually respawn or have some way of being found again? I have a couple of 55 shields that seem fairly rare and I can't imagine them as enemy drops, and I also got a 90 (!) shield that definitely seems like it may be the only one. I know it's not the way to play, but sometimes with these things I just never use them because it would feel weird to have e.g. the Hylian Shield break on me. I'm also wondering if that means that some equipment is missable for the compendium if you forget to snap it before breaking it.

Anyway, I keep playing compulsively and not really moving the story forward, but I did most of the memories last night and just have two left I think. Otherwise I've been doing side adventures, exploring, taking pictures, and finally taking down (overworld boss spoiler if you haven't defeated that random scary thing that shows up) Phantom Ganon.
To answer your question:

There aren't, to the best of my knowledge, any weapons that are truly one-of-a-kind and can't be replaced

Any weapon you find in the depths can be re-purchased from the Bargainer statues in exchange for poes. The Hylian Shield can be repurchased from Cece in Hateno, though doing so costs 4 grand. Everything can be either re-bought or re-forged, as best I know

So don't worry about it and go nuts, as thou wilt
Though you might also want to go to Tarrey Town...

I am curious if they will do making of videos, as they did with BOTW.

For reference, the first three parts of making of BOTW were released 11 days after launch, and these did not have spoilers in them, just general idea about concept, world and music. The 4th, final and spoiler part with devs talking about their favorite characters/things was released 24 days after launch, being much later since it had spoilers and most people beat the game at that point.

We are now 16 days after launch, so it's possible we might still get something, at latest by early to mid June? Hard to tell. Either way, we are almost certainly getting presentations at CEDEC in September which will be very detailed and more technical, and probably also one at GDC next year.

I've completed around 70 shrines, have the full overworld map and Master Sword, but have only done the Hebra questline out of the regional phenomena. If this keeps going like my first BotW playthrough, I'll do random stuff a couple of hours every day until I accidentally end up in the final dungeon and just finish the game.

Finished the geoglyph quest line. Now crying and throwing up!

It ultimately doesn't matter since nothing that happens is particularly surprising and is heavily telegraphed so I knew what was going on when I was riding that dragon, but I'm guessing they didn't intend me to do the Lost Woods and retrieve the sword from the Light Dragon before seeing the Master Sword and spiral memories. I still have a few memories missing that break the sequence, so hopefully it's nothing that will have less impact and that I should have happened upon sooner. I still have two phenomenon to do!

All in all, I liked the memories and thought they were effective. I don't mind draconification coming up so early because assuming you notice the game's extremely strong WINK WINK, knowing exactly how it happens and why becomes the drive for finishing that quest.

Also fucking lol at the Deku Tree quest just dropping you into that confined arena with gloom hands. I need a little distance so I can spam bomb arrows immediately to nope them out of existence!

Unrelated, I do like the little touches here and there in this game. I added a garland to my shield that I got in the southeast part of the map, and the guy at the snowfield stable complimented me on it.

I played this game for 60 hours and beat it. Now I'm watching content creators play it and I'm blown away by how many things I missed. Not that I'm upset--I never wanted to 100% this game--it's just amazing how much stuff Nintendo packed into it.

The amount of game in here is staggering, and it rarely feels like padding. I’m still discovering things 90 hours in.

Finally arrived at Hateno Village.

made a beeline for the old homestead before saving and turning off and boy do Nintendo want their anime thirst trap but also their plausible deniability. Just Zelda, living in Link's house, with one bed, and his century old hair tie kept as a memento in her secret study.

Actually think it's kinda sweet and not sure if I'd want them to make a bigger deal of there potentially being a romantic relationship. It's just another part of the fabric of the world.

Also annoyed I didn't light the torches when I ended up in the castle throne room like, 50 hours ago. At least I unlocked a shrine there so I can quick travel back...
It's not Link's house in this game, it's Zelda house. Link moved out, or never used it beyond weapon storage and heart recovery in the first place. Everybody refers to it as Zelda's house, and the housekeeper explains things to you as if you've never been there before and she doesn't even know who you are.

“Our surface team has established a network of terrifying banana traps. I fell for one myself. Don’t be tempted.”

These freaking Yiga, man.

Yeah any other open world game and I’d have packed things up at 30-40 hrs.

I haven't met a housekeeper so things haven't been that clear cut for me.

Yeah I’m by no means a big open world guy, i get bored with them with a couple dozen hours most of the time, but TOTK had me like this with people who sink hundreds of hours into games of this genre:

Even BOTW I stopped playing around the 50 hour mark, but here I’m making a goal to at the very least get every shrine.

You know maybe next time reply in spoiler tags without spoiling specific information people haven't come across just yet?

There's no harm in me inferring from incomplete information, even if I later come across something which suggests I was wrong. You don't have to spell out the details; not least when I'm using spoiler tags to discuss little details in case other users haven't made their way there yet.

I mean, maybe that's how they intended it sure, but there's enough there to read into it otherwise and you can't stop my headcanon! Plus the fact that you can sleep in the bed

I’m on such a power trip right now. Completely decimating gleeoks. I finished a flux construct battle before it even started. (Swooped down on it and bullet-timed the weak point)

Enemy/encounter spoiler:

The lynel coliseum won’t know what hit ‘em.

Yeah actually have the time to poke around the village now and a few things stick out:

multiple characters do refer to Link as a traveler, as if he's a perfect stranger to them. One area I think Nintendo could have done a slightly better job of is acknowledging specific things players did in BotW, like buying and upgrading the house in Hateno. Your horses and the champion's photo carrying over are really nice touches; but I haven't come across anything else like that so far.

Secondly, yeah, Symin (the Sheikah who teaches at Hateno School) is surprised to see Link, and explicitly says "so you're back in town, eh?", implying Link has been in Hateno in the past. Symin's disappointed Link isn't with Zelda, but that's standard for characters who know Link when they see him return: they think Zelda would be with him (that doesn't have to be romantic, obviously - Link was her sworn knight and Zelda was last seen with Link).

But the bed thing is interesting. I can't sleep in the other beds in the village but did sleep in the house. The champion's photo is also there, which was Link's belonging in the previous game.

I don't think it's clear cut either way; to me it feels like Nintendo doesn't want to give a clear answer but does want to have their Zelink fan cake and eat it, if that makes sense. Characters not being familiar with Link might also simply be a touch designed to make sure new players feel like they haven't missed out, which is understandable; but as I've said above, I think they could've been a bit more nuanced with details and odd lines here and there for returning players. Seemingly, only characters actively involved in the search for Zelda, or who are part of the Sheikah tribe, explicitly react to Link as if they know him.

The amount of times I have fallen to my death or lost a ton of hearts immediately after leaving a low gravity area and returning to normal gravity is beyond count

When your Zonai device is running low on energy you can use Recall and the battery will recharge during that. I found that right now after 110 hours of gameplay lol.

The fact that they didn't have this set to holding down on the d-pad for a menu like the other 3 directions is baffling to me. It's hard to believe they play tested the hell out of this game without realizing this could be handled way better.

I wouldn't mind of the cutscene sequence of Link going through the elevator in Skyview towers was always playing, and not just in first ever encounter.

I just caught a star shard mid skydive yooooo let's go

I got back from my vacation yesterday and had to wait in a really long customs line, the entire time I was wishing I could just ascend straight up outta there

Yeah, I don't think people not remembering Link and his and Zelda's relationship/housing situation are in any way related.

Story-wise, people not remembering Link is just the "forgotten hero" trope. Link saved the world, but outside of a select few people didn't really notice. They might not know about the hero at all they might know the name but not the face, but Link himself is mostly just regarded as the inconspicuous bodyguard at Zelda's side. He's the noble hero that asked for nothing and received nothing while Zelda is the shining princess the world revolves around and that, in contrast to Link, takes initiative to build up Hyrule again. That's a pattern throughout the entire game - even in the Zora's Domain where a reasonable amount of people recognize Link they built a statue of him that at best vaguely resembles him. Zelda is the legend, Link the foggy memory.

The house, I think, is ambiguous on purpose. They want us to think and talk about it, it's a tease. It looks like it's just Zelda's house, but there are enough things that give you pause if you look closely enough. I don't think people not remembering Link is a sign one way or another though, it's once again meant to show that Link is just a small little guy who doesn't draw people's attention. It's very clear in any case that Zelda got romantic feelings for Link.

I think it was important to them that the companions actually feel like characters that fight alongside you in battle. You having to interact with them as opposed to the interaction being reduced to a menu prompt is supposed to underline that.

This literally happened to me last night I swear

I think star shards are programmed to spawn at times when you're sky diving. I was doing a lot of dives today and had the star shards fall near me a few times.

Hoping it’s something that can be fixed through an update.

Who’s the worst NPC? Correct, it’s Hagie, and the game knows it because it encourages you to mess with him.

Help.

I’ve opened a couple of chests with extra large charges worth 100 charges (or something) but then I’m not seeing them in my inventory. I’ve even gone back to the chests and they’re open with nothing left inside. The latest one was at the Gerudo Mining place in the depths.

What’s happening?

Crystalized Charges show up in the key items tab, I suppose you might be looking for them under materials?

He was the worst in BotW, too. He asks you to fight a Guardian, but it's just to give him something to watch. He pays you 20 rupees once you're done and scolds Link for expecting more.

Conversely, I was happy to see how his daughter has grown.
In general, she was about as curt as her father was in BotW, but in TotK she's much friendlier. She also hated the outdoors (and everything else too, according to her!) and was sickly, but in TotK she's working to become more active so that she can visit Mattison in Gerudo Town. 🥹

Right, I think it's possible that's why it's implemented in such fashion but either way it's a mess.

I can understand that it’s kinda clunky but like, I never really use the companions for combat? So it’s not really a complaint that resonates with me.

I really only need Tulin for wind boost, and he’s always there ready to trigger it in air. And Yunobo for smashing rocks.

I usually have Sidon completely disabled

This isn't explained in the game to my knowledge, but the large charges are automatically converted into normal crystallized charges when you pick them up. If you've unlocked a forge construct with large charges, buy one and watch the upper right corner. Your charges will increase by 20. It's a nice QoL thing, so you're not managing a bunch of resources, but it's not at all intuitive since the large Zonaite and large charges are different materials. Hope that helps.

I was able to spend the whole Sunday comfortably sitting on my couch playing Zelda. It's crazy that I hit 100 hours without ever stepping foot into Zora's Domain, but now I am knocking on the door of the Water Temple, which will be the last of the four phenomena for me.

I also did some thorough sky exploration and found a lot of shrines I had missed. It's pretty fun to figure out how to get to some tough-to-reach islands.

And I completed the Tears of the Dragon quest plus got the Master Sword back.

All in all, a pretty fun day. In a way it feels I'm turning a corner towards the finish line of the game, but there's still a lot of optional stuff I want to get done before watching the credits.

Can someone give me a vague hint where the Hylian Shield is?
I hope these are as helpful/unhelpful as you were after:
It’s in a secret passage you might have used in BOTW.
It replaces a shrine from BOTW.
You’ll probably need a towel after making your way to this location.

I have beaten two dungeons and finally decided to move foward.

Well, just went over the great plateau and I’m finally goind south.. man, i had forgotten how massive the map from BoTw was…. I’m speachless because there’s a lot of stuff before the sea. I’m going over 150h with this. I just got 65h.

Not even close to beat it.

Anyway, on the depths, there’s this temple with closed iron doors in the front and on the back. How do I open them?

It’s a big retangular building. It’s below the great plateau.

The funny thing to me is that at least so far, despite feeling like I'm pretty far into the game and on the 4th Regional quest, I still have yet to do literally anything in the entire Lake Hylia/Faron/Necluda region. And since that area was also kind of lacking in big plot-relevent things in BOTW I really had expected there to be something major there. Which of course there still could be and I haven't gotten to it yet, I suppose.

So one question regarding the order of the visions and the main quest

Is it pointed at any moment you should visti the deku tree before finding the master sword? Because doing all the visions in order clearly tells you where it is, so found weird I finally found the way in to the forest and saving it for it to tell "I can help you to fin the sword.... oh you already have it, go on..."

Finished the game yesterday at about 75 hours and 53.5% completion. That ending sequence was absolutely amazing, just a perfect way to cap everything off.

I'm still going to be playing this game for a while but it's nice to not have to dodge story spoilers anymore haha.

I was never pointed there, but I bet Purah will point you there if you complete the other main quests without obtaining the sword. The Deku Tree makes it a lot easier to find (it gives you a quest point tracking it's location).

Bloated? I mean. As someone who is taking their sweet time because I'm trying to see everything I don't get that. You also don't have to see everything to enjoy everything if that makes sense lmao.

There’s a ton of content, but it’s far from bloated. The design doesn’t insist you do any specific thing, and very little of it is “filler.”

It’s clear that, just like the original, they want to ensure you have enough to see and do no matter how you progress. Whether you engage with it is up to you.

Just finished the first four main temples and probably making a beeline for Ganon's arse. The freedom to just click through every single spoilers is a great motivator for trying to roll credits asap.

That said, wait-a-minute, here's another korok who packed way too much for a backpacking trip. If I don't get him to his friend, I'll probably never pass him again.
